I've had mixed experiences personally and found that it's been more enjoyable if the music's subtle.
Some DMs I've had have tried way too hard but most of them got better as time went on.

It's an odd fit in some ways given their inherent nature does not necessarily lend itself well to the discipline and creativity necessary to excel at the arts, but my character was raised at a young age by a dwarf man who taught him to play the lute. I prefer an intro song & a credits song. That way I kinda prompt my players to shut the fuck up & tune in when we start & to know that we're coming to an end & to wind down/pack up. I kinda hate music during a session as it kinda distracts. Unless you're playing superheroes or similar settings/characters where a theme song is relevant. It goes really well playing a swelling score when one of the players does something superheroes.

When I tan Storm King’s Thunder, I added a framing device that the entire campaign was actually just the story of what happened being told 30 years later, in Iliira’s tavern, to a rapt audience. I added a mechanic where in the Drunk Duck, the PCs could drink in order to be better storytellers (gain advantage on a check), but if they passed out from drunkenness, they couldn’t have advantage or score critics hits (but they could still critically miss).

It did, of course, mean that the whole campaign was very lighthearted and silly, especially since dying was even less likely than in a normal 5e game (“wait a minute, I died? That doesn’t sound right. Let me start over…”).
