it's too bad that reactive armor is already a canonical and terrible armor type, because something that comes in one-shot pods but can basically no-sell a ballistic hit X times each could be an interesting way to counteract gauss supremacy while incidentally giving small autocannon an additional niche job

ultra being a good way to deal with it seems a good idea, it would promote ultras other than the 20. giving it an caveat excluding LBX buck would probably be a good idea, though. could fluff it as needing a combo of significant mass and velocity to set off, and since LBX pellets are canonically submunitions airbursting just in front of the target, one could easily say that's why they don't trigger the reactive pods, none of the shrapnel has the necessary momentum behind it, individually

>Beemer - Battlemaster
>Thud - Thunderbolt
>Shad/Shadman - Shadowhawk

There's also less formal ones like the Ostsol being known as "pimp" and the Bugs being, well, Bugs (or "WTF RAT's this is bull").

>>96065954
It's not a bad mech, and the variants are mostly pretty solid. Then you go into the later eras and Krazy Kat orders Defiance to shoehorn a Heavy Gauss into it whilst the Cappies saw off the missile tubes for Plasma Rifles. But those aside, the later models are mostly solid.

Well… see that’s the thing of it.
Because in a typical Crud configuration the left torso only has one critical slot, and it’s the LRM ammo, and they typically don’t have case. So however often one gets critical hits to the left torso is how often a Crud tends to explode

Got a game lined up with my brother for Sunday morning. He’s new-ish to tabletop so I’ve got a bunch of pre-built forces for different instant action scenarios that he can pick from, so he doesn’t have to learn how to build his own lance/star yet. I haven’t nailed down my own force yet, though I’m thinking of running the “salvage” objective with:

>Black Python 4
>War Crow B
>Stormcrow C or Prime
>2x Enhanced Sylph squads

Might switch out that War Crow since I don’t know if I want to introduce him to ferro-lam armor yet, but 5/8/5 heavy Omni with hand(s) is pretty hard to come by, so I’m not exactly flush with options.

Little loreletts. That's a DA Wizkids decision. Read the novels, bros. Even then, the DA had each Successor State with 3-5 warships and clanners with way more.

Now if you're imagining Star League era mega fleets with defined roles instead of a single Warship being a Dark Souls Boss then you can get your head examined.

Seems very basic for both.

Amaris Dragoons tend to be very well equipped so I'd legit consider adding a "b" onto the end of some of those mech designations you got for them and you got something more in line with what they may have access to.

SLDF also tend to all run the same mech per company nevermind lance so a SLDF lance would legit all be King Crabs or all Cyclops or all Longbows etc. Having a mixed lance in the SLDF is extremely rare.

Originally, Helm stuff was just barely reaching mass production in 3048. A major plot point in the Invasion is the desperate need for ERLLs from the FWL. 3050 variants are uneven and retarded, with things like upgrading to ERPPCs without DHS to represent the highly limited supplies of things.

Then CGL says "actually everyone had DHS in 3039!"

There's a pdf with cards for the first three box sets (so beginner box, agoac, and ci) but you need to use their card builder if you want any more. As for campaigns you would have to do some work to patch them since it is its own system and all.

I agree. DHS only outside the engines would have prevented total laser supremacy. Or it could have made building mechs impossible. In order to sink 20 heat total, IS DHS would be eating up 15 crits that could only go in the side torsos and arms. A mech using an XL engine, FF, and Endo that sinks 20 heat would be almost entirely critpacked without weapons.

There's little reason to not at least put some money into some shorts to test things out, and this goes for a lot of different franchises. The only real fear is that they just pocket the money and deliver nothing or that it misrepresents it, but both of these are things within control if you just keep an eye on it.

Pretty much any tabletop game would get at least some leg up by paying some animators to make some five minute "look how cool this shit is" features, but it's still uncommon. Think of how many dudes got into warhammer just from the DOW1 opening alone.

This is (probably) what a 3049 Griffin would look like if DHS only outside the engine. Compare to the 3M which has the same armor, an LRM-20, and sinks 26 heat with only 3 tons in HS while this sinks 21 heat with 6 tons in HS. Mechs with bigger engines that can fit more HS inside the engine actually get fucked by DHS outside the engine only, which is why I suppose it's all DHS.

Topps owns BT as a whole outside of video games (though Disney owns the existing cartoon). I'd say your best options would be either get in on something like Secret Level or give fan projects a lot of leeway as long as they're not trying to directly monetize the IP. The webm posted would make for a great commercial bit to post on TikTok or Youtube Shorts.

Even Topps does not call the shots.
It goes:
Michael Eisner->Tornate->Topps->CGL
Only video games and CCG are outside this chain with Microsoft having license straight from Michael Eisner and CCG being lost somewhere in WotC.
So for better or worse Battletech is almost whole again.

Reflective chaff to temporarily counter or slightly reduce/scatter an incoming laser is a thought. It would have to be used proactively to completely block a shot as deploying it during a shot would only be partly effective.
Countering a ballistic shot would require a really high velocity projectile like an efp or a mini gauss. So it would only work against single shells and not bursts or shot.

IRL no military actually fights entirely “to the death” some would’ve been captured, or fled. So sure there is inevitably going to be members of clan Steel Viper that survived. But I highly doubt that they are still associating with the old clan. Likely they joined up with other clans, or the dark caste, or went into hiding, but they likely aren’t claiming to be part of Clan Steel Viper anymore.

You know, I’m just going to say it.

Whoever decided to colonize this planet was an absolute moron. I mean really, there’s absolutely no way orbital scans or preliminary expeditions to the surface wouldn’t have noticed that the planet’s native fauna included dropship-sized hermit crabs, or mech-sized lizards that probably spit radioactive plasma. There’s no way even Age of War surveys would’ve missed that. Which means that whoever was in charge of that colony ship either decided to land on the planet without gathering any kind of intel beforehand, or saw the reports of native kaiju and thought “this is fine” and decided to colonize it anyway.

That's super missable. Biological matter wouldn't show up on anything magnetic or most radar, while pictures wouldn't show them if they only move rarely or at night. You'd just see weird DropShip-sized geological formations.

There’d still be clues. Corpses/bones from dead kaiju (dead from either injuries inflicted by other kaiju or dead by natural causes) scattered around, scars on the environment from previous cycles (freakishly large game trails or massive nests, etc…) if this is a normal occurrence then there’d be evidence of it, and at that size those clues are unlikely to be subtle

I’m still in a bit of disbelief that this thing’s main gun is only an AC5, it just looks too big.

Also, is there any in-universe explanation for why GEVs are so prevalent in the Battletech universe despite being incredibly obscure IRL. besides the meta reason that when Battletech came out hovercraft was still a new and there was a lot of buzz around it, and the developers couldn’t have known that the tech would be abandoned due being too expensive, finicky, and high maintenance than any tactical advantage could offset

AC is just a category essentially bracketed by DPS numbers. So a single fuckhuge cannon shot like a hunchback uses or a small rapidfire cannon are the same. Which is probably them just handwaving the wildly different gun designs they stole from macross and dougram, but it's what we've got. So that AC5 is probably one of the few single-shot versions. Either that or they fucked up.

It has nothing to do with when BattleTech came out.

GEVs were a big deal in Shadowrun, but they only got introduced to BT with Total Warfare. Probably because some writer or another was a SR fanboy and wanted more of them.

you're thinking of WiGE, GEV is more a generic sci-fi term for the kind of hovercraft BT has. I rather suspect it came from some mid-late 70s sci-fi novel or concept vehicle, since SJGames OGRE uses it extensively as well and IIRC so do a couple of other things of 80s vintage (Morrow Project, I think is one of them)

> I rather suspect it came from some mid-late 70s sci-fi novel or concept vehicle, since SJGames OGRE uses it extensively as well and IIRC so do a couple of other things of 80s vintage
The WiDGE? Or GEV?

For further clarification: WiDGE is more like a planeboat, a boat that can kinda fly (example would be the Russian Ekranoplans)

A GEV, at least in common Battletech nomenclature, is referring to an ACV, which float on an air cushion (an example would be the LCAC)

I do think the reason these were incredibly popular in sci-fi writers in the 70s and 80s is because this would’ve been the time where both of these technologies were coming out of R&D and entering both public and military use. And they grabbed attention both because of their novelty and the practical advantages such a vehicle provides. Hell even military leaders were excited about the new tech. So of course everyone thought that the ACV would usher in the future of warfare and transportation.

Of course that didn’t happen because the system… well the system had some shortfalls.

- it was expensive
- it needs a skirt to keep the cushion stable, without it the thing would become unmanageable and either crash or flip over.
- it needs calm seas or it doesn’t work over water
- if the system failed over water, it sinks like a brick
- sharp rocks and sticks could puncture the skirt.
- the SR.N4 was finding that even when traveling over flat seas and soft sand, the skirt would still get damaged and require repairs after every trip
- the fans are also complex and require extensive maintenance.

It just turned out to be more trouble than it’s worth IRL. But maybe by the 2700’s something changed to make military designers and commanders take a second look at ACVs.

I swear to god this has to be the most cursed mech I ever field. Never fucking survives and just eats crits and dies faster than its armor should allow. Usually it dies to an ammo TAC on like the third turn or just keeps falling on its ass and breaking things every time a PSR pops up. Today, a Hunter light tank managed to get get TACs on it 3 turns in a row despite it having the majority of its armor. Thing was shooting AP missiles. I took 2 engine crits, then a gyro, and then it finished the engine off. Had half of my CT armor still there at the end. Im just going to stop bringing this thing out.

Funny, I’ve had the opposite problem, every time either I’ve fielded one, or my opponent did, it’s never, ever, gone down; and not for a lack of trying. I have seriously seen an entire Lance worth of mechs concentrate all fire on a singe Orion for, I want to say 2-3 turns and it was unfazed, I think it was suffering more negative effects from overheating than from anything the other mechs were doing to it. I mean I am convinced the damn thing is indestructible, so I don’t know what the hell you’re doing wrong.

I honestly think its because its more fragile than people realize. It has a good array of weapons but its two strongest work together best at range, it doesn't have the sinks to really fire its entire spread, and its too slow to generate any real TMM. What it does have is a shitton of armor which means you're less concerned about incoming fire than you probably should be. Its a heavy so it gets focused and again because its slow it eats hits which means more dice rolls against it. It also doesn't have a reputation for being a scary mech you want to avoid so people don't shy away from it. The other important thing: The Orion has more ammo bins than even the base Crusader (5 to the Crud's 4) and they're clustered together in the side torsos which means a TAC to LT has a solid chance of hitting missile ammo.

> so maybe you should share what voodoo you're doing with the dice that makes it be nice to you.
Well more accurately it’s only nice to me when I field it, it gets quite mean when it’s fielded against me.

But I don’t know what to tell you, most locations have between 22, and 36 armor, means that any given location is only going to start going internal on its 3rd or 4th consecutive hit with a PPC, or equivalent weapon, which is somewhat hard to pull off quickly. It might also help that most of the games I play take place between the succession wars and clan invasion era, so things like gauss weapons are still something of a rarity. With that said, another tactic is to turn its biggest shortfall into an asset: the Orion’s weapons aren’t terribly intimidating, it’s either bracketing the AC10 and LRM15 together, or if something gets close, it’s bracketing the AC10 and MLs together (maybe switching out the AC10 for the SRM4 if the target is a light or already has the bulk of its armor already stripped off), not bad, but not impressive. So if the Lance has other hard-hitting support mechs (like the Awesome 8Q, Catapult K2, Longbow, etc), or just more aggressive mechs (thunderbolt, exterminator) then your opponent is likely to either prioritize taking out the other mech over the Orion, thus extending its life expectancy, or the player will try to split his efforts between them, which will allow the Orion’s armor to excel. But this should all be obvious stuff; without going internal getting crits on mechs should be statistically difficult, and thus mechs with high armor should be able to go longer before they start taking crits. So I don’t understand what the heck you guys are doing to get these things knocked out early.

I’m also going to just say, sometimes shit just happens.

One time I had a Ymir that had taken exactly 0 damage up to that point, and, for lack of a better option, my opponent fired a machine gun at the Ymir as a secondary target. He hit, got a 2 for location, rolled a 12 to confirm the crit, and proceeded to hit 3 different engine critical locations.

Shit just happens and if that is a problem then maybe Classic Battletech isn’t for you.

If you read people's posts the problem isnt from running out of armor its from unlucky TACs or failing PSRs and breaking their hip. Your comment about pairing it with a hard hitting mech I think is where the problem comes from. The Orion is rather costly in BV to just be a sidekick to something bigger, especially when you can just use something like a Centurion for cheaper. Most people use it as their big hitter, its a 75 ton armored command mech with a 10point gun and decent battery of other weapons why not. So it goes wading in and absorbs fire it can't evade because its only a 4/6 and just stacks dice rolls against it. More chances of a PSR, more chances of crits, more things that can be crit.

I mean, if the problem is that your dice hates you, I don’t know how to fix that.

> The Orion is rather costly in BV to just be a sidekick to something bigger,
~1430 BV is expensive? That seemed like a bargain to me. How big are the typical games you play in?

>Because you shits are going to start splitting hairs to continue to justify your sociopathy.
Nah. All I want is acceptance that there are differences in people, and that white people are as much a distinct race as African or Middle eastern.

>So the invaders weren't raping the women and children?
Yes, but they never made significant inroads because the entirety of Europe put differences aside to fight the invaders out, and the few bastard offspring that did reproduce had a negligible impact on Europe's genetic makeup.

But manic your a full on retard who is stuck on this path of self mastibatury righteousness. Ignorant but too up your own backside to admit it. As history has proven, no amount of evidence is enough for your retardation. Do off you go, go try to kill your mommy again. And fail. Again.

Genealogy has proven that there are distinct subspecies of hominids. I am happy to recognise them all, all I ask is that mine us recognised as much as those of a higher melanin content and that all are treated according to their actions, not placed on a pedestal just because they are of a different species.

Unsurprising, all European genealogy includes neanderthal dna. Neanderthal x Homo Sapiens. If you did basic research into the Human genetic lineage you would know.

Whoah, Olly. We can't say that. Mostly because species and subspecies definition has to do with populations not naturally interbreeding, and we fucked all that up once we invented boats about 7000 years ago. Last people you could probably say that about would be like the Aborigines.

subsaharans have an incredibly high admixture of a proto human genetic pattern possibly habilis but noone can identify it.
And no, lizards are not mammals, their dna is far more than 20% different, we don't share common ancestry with lizards unless you trace back to single cell organisms.

Son, we came from reptiles back in the Permian from the Diapsids. You really need to realize how much of our total genetic code is old garbage. Just being tetrapods gives us 70% compatibility with fucking fish.

Actually I just don't want my friends to have seven or eight extra units to click through every turn (since they're still sort of new to the game) and so wanted to let Princess drive the turrets for them, but if its impossible to do that without giving her control over deployment then they'll just have to deal with it. Thanks for the helpful and informative reply.
