We don't have castles and shit sitting around as reminders of it because the continent didn't experience it. The USA also had Tolkien's work, it wasn't some mythical times that never left the UK or something.
Sci-fi was more popular in the USA because sci-fi writing was more common place for decades with even pulp magazines and such being fairly common. This jumped to movies and the like as well.
Wargaming in general was never wildly popular in the USA, however, the wargaming scene with guns is gonna be more popular than the wargaming scene without guns.
