How come medusas are depicted as being beautiful?
Medusas are traditionally beings who have been cursed with ugliness. They are so unbearable to look at that any mortal who does so is instantly turned to stone. They are self-loathing, and fall victim to their own reflection. They hide away in dark, secluded places. This is why more medusae should be depicted as shy, self-isolating NEET jimiko girls, the way god intended.

It's a form of projection. Imagining that a being has such low self estime and loathing in spite of actually being beautiful and/or powerful that someone like themselves can slide right on in and provide the validation they crave.

That, and I want to have sex with them and there really isn't a deeper answer than that.

>Medusas are traditionally beings who have been cursed with ugliness.

Medusa, and maybe her sisters(?), were, but the general span of their species wasn't. There's conflicting accounts: some were Echidna's brood, some were born from the sea monster Ceto, and some were birthed by Gaia.

They were originally ugly, but by 500 BC you were already seeing beautiful Gorgons being depicted. Looking this up the bigger surprise (for me) is that the older Gorgons kind of resemble Oni or maybe some kind of East-Indian Monster with the curling lipped face and the teeth. They also used to have wings.

> Medusas are traditionally beings who have been cursed with ugliness.
Okay, 1: Medusa was one individual member of a species of monstrous creatures called a “Gorgons” (singular: “gorgon”).

2: except for Ovid’s writing, Medusa wasn’t cursed to be a snake-haired monster, she just was a snake-haired monster. Like you wouldn’t say Wasps are “cursed” to have a bad attitude, they just do.

So much the actual traditional portrayal of Medusa is as a ruthless monster who’s just been that way since birth. Heck, since she’s not even the main focus of the myth she appears in, she doesn’t get a lot of development, really just an obstacle Perseus has to overcome with courage and wit.

So… yeah, for that reason alone Gorgons make for good boss-monsters to challenge players and encourage out-of-the-box thinking

Medusa is one character. Gorgon is the name of the species. Only some versions of the myth depicted them as cursed humans, and others depicted them as born that way. And Gorgons were already being depicted as beautiful by the later ancient Greeks. In some versions they were so beautiful that their beauty killed the onlooker, but did not turn them to stone.

Anyways the real question here is: was Medusa and the Gorgons inspired by Pelasgian/pre-Greek solar deities? Minoans (possibly) worshipped a snake goddess, and that serpentine hair might be a misinterpretation or deliberate demonization of a solar halo.
Which is why my idea of the Gorgons is an angelic, heavenly beast in the service of good with solar powers and ophidian beauty

Hell, haven't some versions of the myth had the petrifying gaze as a divine GIFT because the Gorgon Sisters were so supernaturally beautiful that it was the only way they could fend off the hordes of men after them?

There's a lot of interpretations of a bunch of stuff in Greek myth. The longer you study it, the more you realize it's less one religious and cultural canon and more like the folklore of a dozen Mediterranean islands stuffed into the same trench coat.

Maybe. I havent heard of that specific one.
Although the specific story of Minerva turning Medusa into a monster with a petrifying gaze so she wouldnt be raped is a modern fanfic of Ovid (whos version is also a fanfic written centuries after the original myths) created in the 20th century by feminists.

That was mostly just Zeus, Poseidon had standards, though he also invented cucking as we know it today, so he's not exactly a paragon of morality either.

Blame that mostly on Ovid. He was the one that created/popularized "the Medusa was a rape victim transformed into a monster to protect her."

That was Ovid. He rewrote a bunch of myths as part of a hit piece on a someone politically powerful after Ovid was exiled for seducing the guy's daughter.

Anonymous No.96093213 [Report]

Pretty much. Medusa has always been the mythological mother of Pegasus and Chrysoar by Poseidon, but earlier version have the conception as being romantic. Ovid introduced the idea that she was cursed for desecrating Athena/Minerva's temple with Poseidon/Neptune. It was never directly stated but was heavily implied.

>>96093053
That is something the Fate writers came up with, but it might be loosely based on an urban legend about a vengeful Snake Goddess born from a Miko getting sacrificed to a Snake God by her envious sister and then coming back as a Lamia/Marilith like human/snake chimera to have vengeance on her sister.
