>>96050705>TQDo you feel trapped by 5e/5.5e?
Still interested in a scan of the 2024 monster manual, https://pomf2.lain.la/ goes up to a gig for that anon who was going to share it.
>>96092625Nice, I tried compressing it but it was still above 200 mb so I just forgot about it.
There you go.

Preparing Ghosts of Saltmarsh for my table and I thought this was funny. Can't tell if this just got by the editors or if they really want me to change the location of White Plume Mountain.
>>96092668>>96092625My browser still won't let me open it.
>>96092715Worked for me but it took like 10 minutes to load.
>>96092668Thanks!
>>96092715Took a while to download for me but it works.
>>96092668thank you kind stranger
They survived the double death dog encounter and made it into the ziggurat, survived the poison gas and defeated the 3 giant fire beetles. They crawled into the hollow statues from the ladders in the gas room and used the levers to make the statues open their mouths to release the gas and decided to cover their weapons with the beetles glowing ichor for 10ft of dim light which was really smart. One of the 10 year olds is apparently on the spectrum and is tenuously paying 1% attention but I just keep running the module.
>>96092829which module you running ?
>10 year olds your children + friends / students?
>>96093154The Lost City out of Quests from the Infinite Staircase. I just emailed the FLGS and had them set me up with players which turned out to be two 10 year olds, their dad and another guy who was there to play modern but no one else was. A lady was going to play but she noped out when she saw the two 10 year olds desu. (They children honestly aren't bad players but one of them doesn't seem to really want to play). Things should pick up a bit now that we're finally in the module. Hopefully my new dming doesn't kill him, we should at least try to finish the module right? When should I get their steam IDs?
Shid I forgot about weapon masteries
We have a success!
My ranger was able to free the barbarian, then a surprise party addition teleported in to run interference against the Rakshasa and eventually we killed all the enemies with time to revive the bard and paladin. Our bard is retiring from adventuring after that final revive, and we now prepare to venture into a deep jungle temple filled with enslaved various races under control of an ancient demonic bat god. Murder Of Crows kept 5 enemies blinded for 4 rounds, devastating their HP. This spell is absolutely worth it every time.
>>96092608 (OP)>TQI used to but I got my group to try some other games. I realised there is something about D&D thatโs appealing so returned. The new half edition mixes things up slightly even if itโs a very marginal improvement.
Is it possible to use War Caster together with Eldritch Blast in 5e 2024? I'll of course just be targeting the one enemy that triggers the feat, if it works.
What are the best debuff spells in 5e? Spells like Slow and Bane for example.
What are the best debuff spells in 5e? Spells like Slow and Bane for example.

>jynxremove the verbal component, alter the material component to the shard of a broken mirror, and up the die to a d6
>>96093670Yeah, sorry, didn't mean to post that.
>>96093647Yes sir. Cantrips are considered level 0 spells.
>>96093717Great news.
It doesn't seem fair that I could potentially shoot four EB's up someone's ass on an attack of opportunity, compared to a Fighter hitting it just the once.
>>96093664>CommandApproach and Flee can really fuck up positioning, Drop can neuter NPCs, and Grovel is one of the only debuffs spells that grant advantage that doesn't care about initiative order due to it happening on the target's turn.
>FearTwo of the best commands (drop & flee) plus Frightened plus it has a full minute duration and they don't even get to make follow up saves until you are out of line of sight. Oh and it's a fucking huge AoE. Only downside is Frightened immunity is fairly common, if it weren't for that this would be a best spell in the game contender.
>Tasha's Mind WhipOnly moderately debilitating ,but this thing target INT saves which is extremely rare for creatures to have, and it packs a bit of damage on just in case. Not the strongest spell, but probably the best spell in the for burning through LRs, as you get half-damage even when the target saves, but it's debilitating enough to be worth using an LR on, all while only costing a 2nd level slot.
>>96093750Thanks, I appreciate it.
>>96093746You'd be doing it at disadvantage unless you also have Spell Sniper
>>96093802>Spell SniperI do have that.
>>96093808It's my first time playing a Warlock and I'm just winging everything that I am doing. Though I wish I had picked Fighter at level 1 for the CON saving throws as an extra bonus.
Will be dipping 1 Fighter next level for Defence, Medium Armour and Shield since I am not Hexblade.
>>96093815You shouldn't multiclass just for the sake of making your character more powerful. Ask your DM if he would allow you to earn the proficiencies for Medium Armor and Shields through training or some alternative method.
>>96093918Don't worry, we've already gone through roleplaying reasons for the dip.
Divination or Bladesinger?
>>96094026Bladesinger is the single cringiest subclass in the entirety of D&D of course Divination.
>>96094035Because it encourages the single squishiest class in the game to run into melee and waste its spellcasting resources on defensive spells to facilitate that gameplay.
Which martial class and subclass is the most brain dead to play?
I want to cruise control for my next character after having played druid for a full campaign
>>96094035>Wizard>That sings and dances for AC bonus like you're some kind of bard>The smarter you are the better you are at singing at dancing and the higher your AC goes for some reason>Fluff about "Cat" "Bird" and "Snakes" styles like you're some kind of monk>None of which mention any ranged weapons yet the features still apply to ranged weapons for some reason>Get more attacks like you're some kind of martial>Never mind that you're a full-caster and are still better off casting spellsIt doesn't know what it wants to be, tries to be everything, and comes out a confused mess both mechanically and flavor wise. I hate the Bladesinger with every single drop of my being. It's the single greatest example of trying to force a sacred cow into an edition that doesn't want it and certainly doesn't need it.
>>96094035The optimal way of playing bladesinger is to just play a standard wizard casting spells and treating your subclass as an amazing bonus to AC and CON saves
>>96094049barbarian.
>run into the fight>reckless attack, every time>profit
>>96094049There really aren't any "simple" martial classes anymore like there used to be. Champion is still probably the least complicated, though, and it's significantly better than it was in the '14 ruleset.
>>96092608 (OP)Anyone ever run the Humblewood campaign setting? I like the aesthetic from what little Iโve read about it. Is it recommended?
Apart from spider climbing and some kind of bite attack, what should I add to this creature to set it apart from a normal intellect devourer?
>>96094603It's good. Bit of a departure from mainstream 5e but that's not always a bad thing.
Planegea is another of my favorite alternative settings. WoTC should do another competition for their next setting like they did with Eberron. Instead of dragging old settings from the 80s and 90s and raping them.
Are there any lower level shada-kai? My group (level 4) ran into a trio of them and while I want the fight to be unlikely for them to win (the idea is that in return for mercy they have to make some kind of pact, and these guys have been foreshadowed for a while) but the CR 7 guys are a bit much. I want there to be a chance they win the fight, maybe 1 in 4, because then it's more interesting to me as the DM. Anyone got any? Or should I just try to scale down the trio of stat blocks from Mordenkainens Tome of Foes?
>>96095091Planegea sounds based and grugpilled. Will definitely try at some point.
>>96093235>When should I get their steam IDs?Huh??
>>96095092just take any stat block and call it shadar-kai? give it the traits if they are relevant?
i dont really understand your question
>>96095091>WoTC should do another competition for their next setting like they did with Eberron.I used to think this for a few years, but the results of playtests and UA surveys has led me to the conclusion that I would be immensely depressed by the outcome.
>>96093647Put on Agonizing and Repelling Blast invocations, too. That'll learn 'em.
if your players search through a bookshelf, always roll a d100, secretly.
>nat 1
glyph of warding, boom in their face
>nat 100
they find a manual/tome of +2. have the player who was search roll a d6 to see which manual/tome they found.
They are never made aware that it's possible to these books this way. Good idea or GREAT idea?
>>96096282Oh ok I understand. Actually I'll just skip it and make up numbers instead. Possibly fudge some rolls while I'm at it. It's fantasy and it's all made up anyway, so it doesn't matter.
>>96096782Itโs not rocket science, take a humanoid monster thatโs in your CR range and has similar abilities to the shaderkai, then, check to see what special abilities tbe shaderkai have, like the misty step/mobility options, the fey ancestry, and others if you want them more complex.
Stop stamping your feet like a child and think for a minute
>>96096782>make up numbers insteadatta girl.
>>96096782not only are you retarded but your type actually ruins games. 1st you are retarded because reskinning humanoids is literally RAW. You know all those stat blocks that say "any humanoid"? what do you think they're for?
But that's not even the whole problem, the fact that you think this is some closed system and your players can only face stat blocks that are printed, and every kobold needs to have 12 ac and a dagger and never pick another weapon or find armor is the bigger problem. You treat the game like a video game
>>96096698>They are never made aware that it's possible to these books this way.>they just hear you rolling dice every time they search a bookcase>if it ever happens, they figure out what it was for and can now game the system appropriately appropriatelyAwful idea. And that's not even getting into the logic of whether or not it makes sense for those things to be present in a given bookcase.
>>96097455>And that's not even getting into the logic of whether or not it makes senseBut have you considered pic related?
>>96096890So I might as well downscale the original shadar-kai NPCs which have thematically fitting abilities, since any NPC I tack those onto will make it unrecognizable anyway.
>>96097396I've homebrewed loads of stat blocks. I was just hoping someone would have one that somehow hadn't made it onto 5e tools but was still semi official. I guess I'll just take those guys and drop em down to CR 4 or 5 or something
>>96097074>make up numbers instead>atta girl.Kill yourself bitch. You and the rest of the fucking twats that go "lol dude just make up numbers, gygax said game masters roll dice for the sound they make, that's why I just make up random numbers for everything so nothing in the game actually means anything and it's entirely a hollow entertainment floor show for my players instead of a game.". Cool go fuck yourself go play Dungeon World or FATE or some one page RPG like Lasers and Feelings if that's what you want. No one who makes up numbers, is actually playing D&D. And don't pull that pilpul shit with "well by that logic of you homebrew at all you're not really playing D&D either" nope there's a difference between altering rules and outright ignoring them. Fuck you and I genuinely believe that people like you should be able to be fucking sued for WASTING people's time when they come to play a game of Dungeons and Dragons and instead get saddled with your pathetic masturbatory power fantasy.
Go to hell.
>>96097567>Fuck you and I genuinely believe that people like you should be able to be fucking sued>SuedAngry burger detected. Calm down, your grease soaked arteries canโt take this.
>>96097567True, you could just compare the dpr / hp of your monster against the average for the CR you want and just lower them. Shouldnโt be too difficult
>>96097567>if you make up the numbers 1 day before the game starts it's a game but if you make up the numbers 5min before the game starts it's not a game anymore>why?!... because I said so!
>>96094049Champion Fighter, a friend of mine is playing one in our current session since it is his first and he wanted something extremely simple. We recently hit level 5 and he is quite happy with it.
>>96098030Do you think taking Wite-Outโข and a felt tipped pen and changing the ending of a book because you didn't like your favorite character dying, doesn't detract anything from the experience? You're a genuine control freak.

>>96098220I'm sorry you lack the mental capacity to understand the logical conclusion of your arguments

>>96098691And what is that? Please explain since I lack mental capacity.
>>96098851Wrong.
>>96098560Itโs not too hard to find a 5e game. Unlike obscuremcnodice games like Nobilis or whatever the fuck.
>>96099014nta but the fact you directly compared your game to a novel is fucking hilarious, how much do you charge for tickets?

5e was great for making dryads not made of wood again.
>>96097567Scaling down the CR7 shadar-kai is hardly any different from grabing a weaker NPC and slapings the attacks and bonus actions onto it.
>>96101217>wet onesmeh
>dry boneshell yeh
>>96101217clickaty clack, get in the sack
>>96100873My players asked a wood elf-looking dryad child who adopted an old farmer for advice on going into the true neutral dryad forest for look for some missing villagers.
After she told them not to because the dryads would probably try to kill them for invading their forests no matter what the reason, she eventually reached into her hair and plucked out a twig as a token of dryad friendship.
She then reiterated it was a bad idea but I don't think the players believe every NPC who's told them how few fucks the dryads give about non-animals and non-fey and how much of a desecration it is for humanoids to enter their forests for any reason. But they'll learn. Last development was that the PC on watch failed a save against Dominate Person so he's just going to go and stab another PC at the start of next session.
>>96099859It's an analogy dumbass.
>dm only allows two magical rings; one per hand

But he's open to bending that rule a bit via some additional homebrewing and imposing chances of catastrophic failure if I attempt said infinity gauntlet
>>96102161>bending that rule a bit via some additional homebrewingWhat homebrewing? You play a character with more than two fingers?

>>96102346Pretty sure they mean bringing the arguably sensible-in-a-video-game restriction on magic item "slots" to a TTRPG where the limit to the number of rings you can wear shouldn't logically be be less than the number of fingers you have.
>>96102391>shouldn't logicallyMagic rules don't need to be logical. You could easily say
>"the magic held in a ring is unique and more sensitive to similar magic comapred to otehr magic items, and will interfere with each other if the rings are worn on the same hand.because attunement isn't that logical, either.
>some magic items are so powerful that you can only use their power after performing a ritual and you can only use a handful of these items.>ring of three wishes.
>>96102346Define older editions, because as far as I know 4e did this but previous ones didn't.

>>96107089>>96107159>>96107171make sure you have some other actress who is a jealous bitch with a lesser role be the immediate suspect, or maybe a lover or something. Murder plots only work if there's an obvious suspect who isn't the actual murderer. If there's only the understudy that would benefit, it's immediately obvious
>>96107089>>96107159>>96107171>>96107274Also have some rich noble snooping around who wants to buy the property the theater is on. The murder of an actress could dissuade other actors from participating and he could buy up the property cheap.

I think the concept of Hadar; a sentient evil dying star, is really cool. I want to use it as a BBEG for the very end of a campaign, with other characters like cultists, neogi, vampires and more being the lower level threats. What sort of force would be able to destroy something like Hadar? Can it be killed? Would the way to go about it be to deprive it of things to consume? Who or what would be powerful enough to stop it?
>>96107089Don't forget to take Speak With Dead into consideration before your intricate plot unravels at the first hurdle.
In a theatre setting with ACTORS and COSTUMES, there must be a way of making the spell useful as information gathering without revealing everything all at once...
Another Red Herring Suspect is someone who is unconnected to the murder, but was nearby when it happened, engaged in shady business of their own that they would be reluctant to admit to under questioning/Zone of Truth.
>>96108185Is that from the 3.5e Elder Evils book? If so all the information is probably there. If not I'm 90% sure there's a similar concept in the book.

>>96108185another elder evil tier power, maybe one that turned good like desna in pathfinder, if fed with enough prayer/good deeds/worship
>>96108218Not new at all! They have a reason to go there; I think they just assume it'll be balanced to be "winnable" or appropriate for their level. As it is, they're able to resolve something out of the forest where the dryads can't go, so if they can win themselves an audience by defeating the rest of the forest's hostilities, an alternative to death by dryad will present itself.
So am I understanding it correctly that there are multiple rulesets for how to treat races? Why would they do this?
>>96108815There's been a concerted move away from "race" as that word triggers some people. I personally don't really care that ability scores are now floating. I've told people not to tie them to their background either as I was sick of sailor monks.
>>96109300It's not WoTC but yes it's a real "zine". There was a whole group of them making content like this on DM's Guild before WoTC changed races in Tasha's
>>96109264>>96109275I don't even necessarily care that they changed it, it's more that I find it confusing because different discussions I've seen about 5e are basically talking about two separate systems since they rewrote the rules without renaming the edition and it makes discussion confusing.

>>96092608 (OP)I just reached level 4 (dnd 2024) in my first campaign and we are going to choose our asis or feats in the next game (which will be in 2 days)
I think choosing the Great Weapon Master feat to increase my strength from 17 to 18 and do extra damage would be ideal at level 4.
or should i go for stats and increase my strength from 17 to 19 and one more stat?
Also, I don't wear armor either. I'm using a Barbarian class ability that doesn't require armor (Unarmored Defense) . Should I go for armor, or is it okay to fight without it? Does it make any difference?
I would like to tell you my AC but I don't remember right now and my GM has the sheet.
And one last thing, what weapon would you recommend? I'm currently using a heavy axe, but maybe buying another weapon can help me in other instances like knocking down the enemy or doing some damage even if I miss.
>>96110811forgot to mention that I am a barbarian berserker.
>>96110811Get GWM at level 4 and save the ASI for level 8
There's no difference between an 18 or 19 so taking ASI over GWM at level 4 means you're giving up extra damage for nothing unless you're splitting that ASI into a +1/+1 to bump a second ability score to an even number
If your DEX is 14, wearing medium armor will likely give you more AC than DEX mod + CON mod
If you're taking GWM then grab a maul for topple. It also doesn't hurt to have some tridents for ranged topple (against flying creatures for instance) even though it's not a heavy weapon
>>96110811>Should I go for armor, or is it okay to fight without it? Does it make any difference?do you know your stats? we can easily figure out if its worth it or not to wear armor
>as an aside, its always cool to be unarmoured even if it is mathematically inferior, the cool factor is key for the barbarianFor weapons, greatsword is decent for consistent damage, you could grab Crusher (+1 str to 18) and a pushing weapon and bully enemies around
>>96110811>or should i go for stats and increase my strength from 17 to 19 and one more stat? You only get to do +2 to one stat OR +1/+1 to two different stats
Not +2 & +1
>>96110811>>96110817There's not much point in raising your STR to 19 instead of 18. As a rule, even numbers give you extra bonus, and odd numbers meet prerequisites, but I can't think of anything off hand that requires 19 STR.
As for weapons in my opinion Maul is the best for Topple. Graze is really good in general but on Barbarians that can give themselves advantage whenever they want, you're going to be missing less and therefore benefit less from graze. Topple meanwhile can potentially help your whole team, depending on initiative order.
>>96110852my mistake, thanks
>>96110843>do you know your stats? we can easily figure out if its worth it or not to wear armorI can't remember my stats right now, but I do feel like my AC is pretty shitty. It usually doesn't matter because all regular physical damage is halved against me, until I faced a wizard and the bastard started destroying me with his magical attacks.
In a few hours, I'll ask my GM if he can tell me my PC's stats. I don't think that'll be a problem.
>two fighters, one of them is me
>three wizards
>we fighters do like 20 damage compared to wizards shitting out 100+
>wizards also get dibs on attunement items so we're on a long game of catch up
>DM notices this, goes to the fighters, and "wow, your damage is lacking. did you build your character wrong? ill allow them to retire so you can make a stronger one"
no, we need the magic items and it is dumb that we have to.
>>96110890without more information, i'm heavily leaning that you should grab medium armor, scale because its cheap and half plate if you can afford it.
>>96110969>wizards also get dibs on attunement itemsBut why?

When you do 5e chargen do you do point buy, use an array, or do you roll 4d6? Do you feel like each of those options adds something a bit different to a game?
>>96113215If I'm playing with casual buds, rolling is fun. When I'm DMing with randos, always point buy.
>Rolling 4d6b3Fun, but your players have to accept that they won't all be the strongest in every way, or even balanced with three 9's. Still, limitations are really fun in close groups!
>Point BuyFair to all. No issues of "That's not fair!" Plus, I like building characters myself just for shits, and PB is a legitimate guideline.
>>96113215I use standard array, with:
>you get +2 to one ability score and +1 to a second ability score from your race>you get +1 each to two different ability scores from your (custom) background>after these modifications, no ability score can be over 16A bit more customization, keeping racials relevant while preventing them from being either necessary or prohibitive for any class.
If you let the Moon Druid wild shape into animal-like monstrosities (Owlbear, Axe Beak, etc.), celestials (Giant Eagle, Giant Elk, etc.), Elementals (Mephits, Salamanders), and Fey (only Blink Dog comes to mind), does it break the game? And where would you draw the limit?
>>96113467As the DM, you set the CR of every enemy and you produce every puzzle. None of that is really going to break teh game if you prepare for it.
For me? None of it. Maybe 1 or two monstrosities as a reward for a quest, or maybe an elemental form based on their subclass (circle of the sea, circle of wildfire, etc.) but i'm not really interested in giving them more of the MM to page through for extra synergies or free spells.

Help.
Im playing a necromancer and will be reaching lv 5 soon.
Is there a way I can work with the DM to make commanding them streemlined in combat?
I already have far more complex turns than the rest of my group.
Is there a common way to represent your dead as just one unit?
Maybe use mob rolling?
>>96117524How is your turn already more complex than the rest of your group when you aren't even lvl 5 yet?
>>96117524So, your zombies aren't smart enough to take an actual turn on their own. You must use your action to instruct each one of them, simple things like "Attack until this target dies," or "Run and follow me." On all of their turns, they are on autopilot for what you told them, simplifying one roll each typically. On top of this, they need no flavor beyond "They attack," unless you want to say something cool when they kill an enemy.
All put together, this should really streamline your turns.
>>96117524This probably isn't any less complex but it'll be quicker than running multiple undead
>single creature of a size one larger than an individual undead>one movement, one of each type of action/reaction, one saving throw roll, etc.>can occupy the same space as another creature>combine hit points>combine damage dice and divide it across some small number of attacks (or just one if you like risking a single all-or-nothing attack)>reduce number of attacks as hit points are lost (e.g. N attacks? Reduce by 1 every 1/N portion of lost hit points)One issue with this style is how to handle single target conditions. Proning a single creature shouldn't make the entire group prone but it shouldn't be fully immune either imo.
You can work out how to handle this with your DM.

>>96117834It's mostly the art direction. Eberron goes too hard into a steam/dungeonpunk aesthetic. A lot of the fanart for Eberron is actually way more appealing since they show some restraint. Most people are playing it as Indiana Jones or turn of the century pulp with elves and wands anyways.
>>96117834>I thought people hated the idea of a post magical-industrial revolution world. It's cool, but it needs to be done with style. Like the anime with the elf reporter MC, where they used a mix of magic and science to reach the equivalent of RL late 1930s to early 1940s technology.

One of the PCs is returning to their home city after several months away and they need to reconnect with members of their secret faction. However, the faction has splintered into small cells and is being hunted by their enemies.
How can I make finding and reuniting the remaining members interesting? Something better than an 'accumulate X successes before something bad happens' Skill Challenge.
>>96119377Boring but I'd okay it after the following changes:
>DM determines who killed your parents, not you>the sword might or might not be blackrazor, probably not even if it claims otherwise>DM decides how many shards there are and in the first place the sword may be bullshitting you
>>96119377Honestly, going line-by-line it's not terrible. I think it's a little more organic if your character's uncle makes a mistake (or underestimates his sibling) and slips up during his attempt on your parents. It doesn't look good for your character whenever his parents are depicted as incompetent.
Instead of killing both of them, consider leaving one alive and the other crippled, or even having both of them being crippled, adds both weight and responsibility to your character's motivations while also not falling into the tropes
>>96119420 mentioned. I also like the idea of having your DM determine some of these things that anon
>>96119478 brings up, or even playing out the assassination attempt in a session 0.5-type one-shot.
Lastly, establish your Grandfather's importance earlier on. It's overly convenient whenever his background is mentioned only as it suits your character. For one, you would have an extremely qualified mentor to assist your character's path towards his Oath of Vengeance. As for the cursed sword/Blackrazor bit? IMO just drop it. It's way too forced, and adds a distasteful tinge of artificiality to your background; there are a billion ways to turn a Paladin into a Hexblade without being so on-the-nose. If you absolute insist on it, then incorporate it as something oppositional that your Grandfather faced in his youth, that way you can both legitimately earn its presence in the campaign and you can also earn the opportunity to allow yourself to be corrupted by it, or something along those lines.
>>96119420>orphan>nepo baby>tragic pastI was craving some overused character tropes
>incredibly contrived plot device only to end up as a multiclassing powergamer with a kickstart towards an easy artifact or derivative of suchYes and no i don't expect to be given a freebie artifact for a quest i setup myself but the quest makes sense in my head as why a powerful artifact would search for mortals to obey it.
Also i expect the weapon to play dirty being a warlock patron and all.
>>96119478Agreed i had nothing set in stone.
The goal is to have a heavily armored 2024 bladelock (hence the pally dip) with a recurring rival/villain to duel while spewing cheesy lines.
>>96119467What is the nature of the "Secret Faction" and what are its roles and responsibilities? Before its splintering, how well-off was it? Is that fracture public information, or obtainable if it isn't? How does all of this information relate to your PC's disposition and wherewithal?
I.e. The PC is a 6th level assassin but their secret faction is dedicated to the protection of a series of druidic groves littered throughout the region โas their alliance is atypical or unprecedented, what additional barriers might your PC be expected to face? Don't think in terms of game mechanics, merely objective potentialities
>>96119588The faction is comprised of civilians secretly opposing the dictator ruling the city, so they're not very well off.
The PCs friend can give them the details, but they too have lost contact with most of the remaining members.
The party's overall goal is to make contact with that faction, so their aim is to reunite the cells into one coordinated force.
I suppose hitting up their old meeting places could be one option, but of course there would be 'complications'.
>>96119700Do they have a language or shibboleth of some kind, that isn't compromised, that only they would know? Have your PCs put an encrypted message in the local broadsheets at a new, secure location that is easy to escape from with multiple entrances and exits.
Are there any spells or feats at level 3 that could completely ruin a murder mystery?
>>96119467If the PC has been away, the enemies of the secret faction won't assume that the PC is a member of it--and, if the PC has made enough of a name for themself, the enemies of the faction might see them as a potential ally. If they end up in a prominent position in the hunt for the secret faction's remaining cells, they'd be perfectly positioned to sabotage the hunt while also having access to enemy intelligence that could make it easier for them to open communication channels.
>>96119700Yeah, there you go. If the dictator is getting frustrated with his own secret police's inability to stamp out the resistance, he might think that a band of mercenaries might be a good idea, since he can publicly distance himself from any excess force they use. It would also get the PC in a more trusted position that can be utilized when it finally comes time for the coup. The main complication--and it'd be a good one to play around with--would be the other members of the resistance questioning his loyalty to the cause.
>>96120038Some people might say:
>Zone of Truth>Detect Thoughts>Speak with Dead (but not until caster level 5)would ruin a murder mystery, but only if they haven't anticipated their use beforehand and worked out how to make them valid investigation tools without allowing them to reveal everything from the start.
>>96120094>Zone of TruthIโve always been confused by how this one is supposed to spoil murder mysteries, given that most Agatha Christie stories end with Poirot gathering everyone in a single room that miraculously has the killer confess as soon as Poirot describes how it could have been done.
>>96120179>visit each suspect one by one>Zone of Truth>did you kill X?>if (no) then (ask next suspect) else if (yes) then (murderer found=true)Poirot/Marple etc weren't PC spellcasters who can magically interrogate each suspect the instant they meet them.
>>96120238At 3rd level, you have two 2nd-level spell slots, each of which is only good for ten minutes of Zone of Truth. If you have more than two suspects, that's going to take two days at a minimum. Most of the mystery lies in collecting evidence to identify your suspects in the first place. If you're going to interrogate literally everyone with every relation to the deceased, that could take weeks. And that's even assuming you ask the right questions--Zone of Truth specifically notes that they can be evasive or lean on technical truths to mislead you.
>did you kill X?>no because I hired someone to do it, but Zone of Truth doesn't compel me to reveal that detailHell, if someone THINKS they were responsible for the victim's death, but were actually innocent, Zone of Truth would force them to confess to it. If someone has a secret that isn't related to the murder, they might be unwilling to submit to a Zone of Truth because they're worried about that secret being brought to light--hell, it could be that they've been framed for the murder specifically to force them into that scenario.
>>96120305>did you kill X>no, the fall didThat seems abusable, but funny.
>>96120179It is because autists can only think in binaries and whiteroom nonsense.

>>96123822Tranny parades are what other systems are good for because I use 5e for brutal endless conflict dungeon murdercrawls
>>96124027Why wouldnโt you just use OSE?
>>96124190Because I'm more than FOEGYG, I dislike OSR. I frequently think GMing games is my cope for not making vidya because gamedev is too time consuming and I don't get live feedback as opposed to tabletop RPGs.
Why aren't Arcane casters able to learn any real healing magics? It seems like something that would be easy for an accomplished wizard.
>>96124976Bards are arcane casters, so your entire premise is wrong.
>>96124976>magic initiate doesn't exist
>>96110972>>96110881okay these are my stats:
str 17
fex 12
con 15
int 8
wis 15
char 10
and my ac is 14
>>96125031>>96125234I just meant it should be on the wizard spell list.*
(*Harry Potter wizards could heal)
>>96125298honestly there's something to consider w/ grabbing the ASI for str/con to get those to even scores then your AC would go to 15 (plus the Hp boost) which would be the same as splint mail and considering switching to half plate when you can afford it.
so, GWM if you want more damage, asi if you want more durability
>>96125420>Harry Potter wizards could healharry potter lived under a cupboard and the end of his adventure resulted in him being just a magical cop - how fucking lame
>>96125420If anything wizards should do less shit and then the absence of healing spells wouldn't stick out.
>>96125420Harry Potter was a sorcerer
>>96125420Harry Potter can't Create Food or Water
>>96124976>real healing magics?real healing isn't arcane.
>>96125420Harry potter magic solely exists to move the plot. Spells have zero cost since mana/spell slots/spell points/ki/chi/aether
>>96125462I was considering getting the GWM and buying a scale armor.
>>96125740its not a bad choice, it gets your defenses up a bit and improves your damage.
the +con is just because i personally dislike the odd stat but as a barbarian you've still got the highest potential Hp and in reality its only 4 hp at this time.
which origin feat did you grab?
>>96125774>which origin feat did you grab?farmer
>>96125884yeah, so you'd have tough and extra HP anyways. GWM works then as your feat pick
>>96125930Neat
Now I just have to convince my GM that barbarians can use rage while wearing medium armor.
>>96125996ask him to clarify why thats the ruling
>PHB'24 p51>You can imbue yourself with a primal power called Rage, a force that grants you extraordinary might and resilience. You can enter it as a Bonus Action if you aren't wearing Heavy armor.>Armor Training: Light and Medium armor and Shields
Our 5th, soon to be 6th level party found a Ring of Spell Storing. Purple Dragon Knight, Beast Master, Zealot, Draconic Sorcerer, Dreams Druid. Obviously the Fighter should have it since the Zealot can't cast spells while raging and the other three have spellcasting already, but what's the best use for this item? A big concentration spell, or reaction/bonus action spells so as to not interfere with attacking normally? Druid has access to the entire Druid list, but the other two may not have the exact spell(s) that the Fighter wants.
>>96126077>Ring of Spell Storing. Purple Dragon Knighta wish spell so they can change subclass.
>>96126121>>96126077Outside of the bit, Haste is always a solid pick. Ashardalons stride is something I think sorcerers can get. Or Misty step?
>session sunday
tell me what happens
No, I will not provide any context. That would just constrain your creativity
>>96126222The players are sucked into the game and forced to live as their characters until such a time as they manage to vanquish the villain of the adventure.
>>96126222Those happy little turdlings come across an abandoned wizard's tower where lives a blue dragon wyrmling and his little garden of shambling mounds
A few threads ago I vented about accidentally tpking the party with an encounter with ghouls that just paralyzed them with no counterplay possible
I salvaged the situation by having them wake up down river at bottom of waterfall, near a shrine/tomb to ancient saint with healing powers. They had bite marks and were aware of ghoul disease progressing, and ventured into the tomb following a voice in their head saying it could help. They dealt with some kuo-toa, and eventually found a Couatl in the inner sanctum that passed on the saint's relic before dying, then the dungeon started collapsing/flooding. Now they made it out and the leader of the kuo toa who also fled summoned a giant crayfish. I want a bossfight but they are pretty low on health and im worried about tpk again.
Ideally they surrender the relic which immediately burns the kuo toa's hand and he flees and no fight happens
But if they dont...
Basically i just dont wanna kill my party again. These guys are fucking reckless. I think they just need to learn their lesson and surrender. They have the option of giving away the relic. I cannot come up with more asspulls if they decide to start a fight with low hp
THanks for reading my blog
>>96126222Local vampire has awoken from a prolonged nap from the last age, quickly mind controls a number of the locals (including a horny gnome.) the party are sent in to find out why said horny gnome has stopped sending payments to his well meaning and secretly in-love with him fin-dom queen.
>>96126293 >I think they just need to learn their lesson and surrender.
Is this their first time playing a ttg? if so, I'd give them a bit more leniency.
if not? pick fucking realated.
>>96126293>These guys are fucking reckless. I think they just need to learn their lesson and surrender.Get used to that. Parties don't give up - surrender is a fools game. every fight is to the death.
>>96118183They're ai generated snippets, that when glued together make a human mind imagine a story around it. It's not real.
How short should a dungeon be? I have pic related for a dungeon but it feels a bit small. There's a first encounter involving zombies first. How many rooms should I aim for?
>>96125996Your DM is mentally retarded if he thinks that isn't the case.
>>96127476double it and give it to the next DM
>it looks like a standard 5 room dungeon w/ very little exploration potential, which could be fine for your group / your goals, but you could add in more rooms without ramping up the amount of monsters / encounters by having places where you can give some world building, hidden loot, etc, and potentially more than one path. Currently I would assume that the players have to enter through the south, then hit the east/west rooms, then go north. That doesn't give a lot of freedom for players to bumble around if they want.
>>96127448Fighter with a warhammer and a shield.
>>96127523>double it and give it to the next DMWhat the fuck are you talking about?
>>96127448Do my favorite, Pal 2 then Cleric of Forge the rest. Trust me, fun as shit, especially when you start using shield of faith and get your other AC buffs like fighting style. Pick Warforged too for flavor and a free couple buffs.
>>96127476dont think rooms think encounters
and dont think dungeon think adventure
it's nice for any adventure to have encounters of each type (social, exploration, combat), for different purposes (obstacle, learning, gaining power, flavor, etc), and that leverage different PC's strengths
once you have that you can put each encounter in a dungeon room/section/hallway/part of the swamp/neighborhood of the city
>>96127476You new to DM? If so, that's a good dungeon to start, but just run it as a one shot to get experience. Maybe your players sack it again when the real game starts?
>>96127703>hasnt heard of the double and give it to the next person memengtmi
>>96127739That sounds like a very gay meme in all honesty my brethren.
>>96126293You should teach your players early on that running away is a viable strategy when faced with an overwhelming force.
>early levels, like 3rd>walking through a forst>suddenly the earth shakes>behind the players see 12 hill giants charging towards them (an impossibly deadly encounter)>roll initaitive players are placed in the middle of the map with the hill giants on the other side
>at the top of initative, another 10 hill giants join initative. on the other sideThe giants fight each other. They get unique attacks, like throwing fists full of gravel, or wide log swings to cleavem stomping charges etc.
>after a roundAthletics, history, insight, or survival check, anyone with proficiency in any of them can roll. DC 5.
>failed checkyou recall/notice how brutal this fight is gonna be, and you get the feeling that sticking around is a bad idea.
>successful check>Atheltics/historyyou've heard rumors among muscle heads of these games that hill giants play when they fight with all their might to determine who is the strongest. While impressive to watch, you also know that they are never fatal, and they are always hungry afterward. You get the feeling that sticking around is a bad idea.
>InsightThese giants are swinging their weapons with all their might, but their clubs seem to be wrapped in sheep skin with cotton still attached and are only aiming for body blows rather than the head, arms, or legs. They aren't really trying to hurt each other. While impressive to watch, you know their wounds won't be fatal, and they'll probably be hungry afterward. You get the feeling that sticking around is a bad idea.
>SurvivalYou spotted totally flattened stretches of forest before, and it appears this might be the reason why. While impressive to watch, you also know that they are never fatal, and they are always hungry afterward. You get the feeling that sticking around is a bad idea.
If you really wanna scare them, have a stray rock go flying and hit a player.
Female human fighter, thoughts?
>>96129606I prefer female human barbarian.
