>>96120862I welcome the card changes from 2nd to Ultimate - the art and iconography was/is garish. The only rules change I think that would be a big change would be not spending 2 actions for the second market card. I've played a lot of games where you still have to do a prep step to get in position to topple and need to buy two cards to make that happen - so you effectively give other players a chance to counter. Now with 3 actions, I can prep with an action, buy a card to flip the government, then buy the topple card to trigger victory check and no one can do anything about it.
Thanks for reading my blog.

>>96120862>8 card setupFine I guess, I didn't feel the game to be long in the first place
>Protest and MordidaThis means you can assassinate with any black card unless they keep the subcategory, right? if not, just a better term for the cards.
>Deploy removes all unrestidk if I like that, unrest can be devastating and crucial when trying to block a card you can't outright discard or steal, and blocking it from further unrest makes it even weaker and unthematic, there was a lot of rebellions during the time.
>RetreatThat rule I like actually, not only makes the ruling more simple as all cases will work the same, but you also get to keep prestige around longer
>SackingI understand why but I don't see why also keep the old rule, I guess it confused people
>2nd Market card costing 1 actionNow this is pretty major, you can now do quicker topples with less setup since you can buy > play > Buy topple which was only possible with the Public cards. I think this can be a great rule change since players while having a harder time countering, they still have the info to see what could happen and have to answer sooner. Makes the game even more dinamic. I'll have to try this with the first edition and see how it goes.
>>96123934>This means you can assassinate with any black card unless they keep the subcategory,You still need an assassination card.
>>96124073That's good then, just better terminology then.
I must say though, I don't like the new card design, the original in my opinion is excellent, it its wild, newspaper/history book like imagery is pretty engaging and i never thought it was ugly or difficult to parse.

>>96125674Likewise you can ask for that without calling people faggots and running to the mods when they say "your mom" in reply. You were given explanations in each reply and haven't responded to either of them. One was that it looks like a duck. The other was the the half-bakedness requiring midwits like yourself to consume more to fix it. Yes, your taste is shit, but we're beyond that.
>>96125674Did you run to mods over "your mom" after calling others faggot? Pathetic.
You were given explanations in each reply already, neither got a response. One was looks like a duck, etc. The other was the half-bakedness requiring midwits to consoom moar to fix the game, with allusion to Stonemaier. Yes, your taste is shit. Your reading comprehension is worse.
>>96125556They didn't have the leaders and lore pack, the game still good without it?
Does anyone actually play this expansion?
What are the best MPS for people who don't like MPS? I think I have been winning too much lately and at this point I can barely table talk my way out of being jabbed when I'm already clearly in the worst position at the table. I already have Quacks of Quedlinburg.
>>96126122Most Def. Zero issue recommending base Arcs.
>>96125556Doing God's work Anon. I'm looking forward to getting my copy to the table. I've heard it's better to start with Base Arcs and then add Leaders and Lore after a base game or two.
>>96125519I play Arcs occasionally still, it's fun and since my group knows the rules we can just jam games after learning 1 game in the night, we want to play something we all know.
Worth knowing its extremely cut throat, make sure your group isn't a bunch of euro gamers.
>>96126270Ya, the inclusion of L&L was in the fifth game for myself and one bud, third game for the other guy.
>>96126304Ive been really surprised how "light" it is rules wise and how snappy some hands go. Combat is also lighting fast and so consequential that everyone is invested on what gets blown up/stolen/ransacked.
And all in a reasonable sized package. Base Arcs remarkably restrained for what it sets out to do.
TGZ or Bus for a shorter Splotter?
>>96126422Bus without question. They "should" take about the same amount of time but TGZ gives a lot more rope for action paralysis savants to hang themselves.

>>96126160I genuinely don't think so. Thought it might just be one of these things that becomes through by being repeated a lot. I have never played with turmoil yet I'd still be reluctant to try it, purely because I have heard nothing but negatives about it
>>96126565Depends on what you like in the extended eurosphere I thought Hegemony was a standout game. There's lots of good but relatively replaceable euroslop getting released, but I still found Civolution to be very very good

>>96126422My groups average (usually 3P) TGZ game lasts 44 minutes.
Bus usually last minimum an hour, and we usually play that at 4-5 people.
Bus is still the less complex game for taking actions, but TGZ with a familiar group flies by.
>>96129527>>96129560Not that anon but I was gonna post impressions yesterday but fell asleep.
So I really, really like the game. Or rather, I really want to like the game. Brad's a cool dude, the theme is great, I love that it's a lightweight game with some bite etc.
But the game was kinda meh. I'll try it again for sure because there was a bunch of factors that surely influenced it it in a negative way (it being late on a workday and everyone being tired, only 3p and such) but still, a bit disappointing. I presumed the game will turn out to be more deliberate and copetitive at lower player counts but I'm fairly certain now it should be played as a 90% tactical from-you-gut game. You might say anon, that was clear from the first second on and I won't disagee but you never really know before you play it. I only now realize I was secretly wishing for a deceptively light game with a lot of hidden depth, and I am unsure if it's that. On one hand, it seems made to be played fast and loose, yet some actions clearly want you to pause and go "huh, gotta calculate this for a bit". The two games we played were pleasingly fast (around 33 min) and all pretty close but kind of lacked the cinematic/emotional moments I was hoping for. Some kind of OH FUCK YOU DONT MASH ME INTO THAT ROOM or I HATE YOUR SLIMEY GUTS GET OFF ME reactions and "you can do WHAT?-s. The actu reactions were much more muted, and I suspect the game is much better (but also more chaotic) at 5, and some monsters are clearly less fun with fewer players.
Bottom line is the thematic integration and overall design is superb, but the jury is still out on the gameplay. As is, I'd say it's good but not great. Or rather, as great as I had hoped.

>too complexit isn't, but it's an asymmetric game so each players needs to know exactly what their character does and which other character it's meant to prevent from winning (it's somehow an even more scripted game than Root)

>>96131110No, at the end of the day it is a simple game about running around and slapping each other, you just have to learn 5 sets of rules. I could explain Eclipse (same exact weight btw) in less time and have much more fun with it. Not worth the time for a puddle deep dungeon crawler brawler thing.
>>96131110>So in other words, a little too complexNo, the player board LITERALLY tells you what you can do and the choices aren't many, it's not a game I'd call "complex"
But it's also not something i'd suggest to new players, whose only exposure to board games likely is Risk and Monopoly, not because of 'complexity' per se but because not having to explain to every individual player what they do differently and who they should look out for particularly makes for a not very smooth experience (besides, he asked for 4-6 but I don't think it plays well with more than 4)

Do you guys think people who have never played boardgames and that like cards against humanity would enjoy el grande?
>>96134068They would like it if they gave it a chance but you gotta keep in mind that normies will judge books by their covers and you'll have more success baiting them with something that has a normie-friendly theme. They're going to look at the map of Spain and think "ew, this looks like edutainment."
>>96134068If they can make it to the scoring phase and realize that they are allowed to, nay, encouraged, to fuck with each other, you are golden.
But that means you need to keep them engaged for three rounds of play.
Are you a bad enough dude to save the euro?

>>96134190After you fuck off to reddit or whatever shithole you crawled from, nigger.
>>96134068Impossible to tell. Some people go from having played monopoly twice in their life to heavy games without any problem, some are super enthusiastic and need years of ever so slightly increases in heaviness to keep up. Some just need to be shown what modern boardgames can do to deepdive, some
It really varies a lot from person to person. For what it's worth, I think el grande is a great choice, playing gateway games just for the sake of introduction is faggy
>>96134125Never played SA, yet all I can see is the misaligned circle
>>96134068Yes because I'm delusional.
>>96134237The main thing I remember about Sakura Arms is they wanted Tiuhou licensing but couldn't get it so all the characters are Touhou knock-offs. They specifically picked an illustrator known for their Touhou fanart too.
>>96134068Area majority were really hard for me to take in. Probably because they are so cruel and unfun if you don't know what you're doing. In a eurogame you get to build some gay farm, in an rpg you ungrade a character and hit things with a stick, in a wargame you shoot things, in a card game you do the card stuff and get lucky, but in area majority you just flop your guys around aimlessly, and then it all gets taken away from you during scoring rounds and you feel like a buckbroken bitch ass nigga. El Grande is a fairly simple game rules-wise, but you need a dedicated group for it cause the first playthrough is gonna be painful
>>96134224Acceptance of trannies and groomers is a unique reddit trait. Maybe you should go back
>>96134205when i play it next weekend i'll let you know
>>96129560so light you could be forgiven for thinking there's nothing there. i played twice so far at 3 and 4. both games there were plenty of "oh fuck you" moments, like shunting a monster into an empty room, stealing their points, snagging the last person they needed for a set just out of spite, and stealing from each other's devour piles. sequencing your cards is interesting enough, and you should always have a good idea of what cards are coming next since decks are tiny. the variety is immense, however I'm already tempted to try the wolf pack again to see if i can play them better
so far we've tried the bee, the car, the clown, mummygator, the fitness instructor, killtron, and the wolves. only the clown was too simple to be engaging imo. killtron is probably the highlight so far, you really need to watch his programming or he's incredibly powerful.
>>96134557>Area majority were really hard for me to take in.I'm not sure I believe you but here's a thing if you want it.
>>96134693God damn it your edit is perfect.

>>96134596What's your take on spooktacular as a whole? Because I am for now finding it to be less of a meaty filler than I had hoped, although I am by no means deep into the game.
Also regoo and especially the dead line seemed less powerful with fewer player counts. Nightslayer, angler and Devil's game were pretty fun, found remover to be kinda bland. Jury's still out on the rest.

Speaking of solofags, been waiting for Kanal for ages only to find out shit's going to be 70-80$

I've been playing DC Forever and Toy Battle recently, both are pretty fun. Feel like DC needs sleeves to speed up gameplay a bit.

Uh, well I guess that makes it about 2 hours a match, eh?
Last thread anon criticized the games scoring, and he was on the money. Even with the web app doing the work for you, it is ass and really deflates the excitement to see how well you did.

I get finding remover bland, yet I still liked moving up the track and lining up powerful plays. i managed a double spook in the main room for 11 points, and then followed it up the next turn with my end-of-track 10 point bonus right as the game was ending
>>96134693As the original artist for that pic, this is an 11/10 edit. Great stuff.
>>96136354Very much with you here. It's actually weird how little I am able to estimate how the skill vs random chance balance in the game will shake out to be. The fact that you can always have a rough idea what your opponents are holding and the ability to set up turns seem to point towards a suprisingly competitive game but idk. I'm afraid I want the game to be something it's not.
Also kindof wish I had manned up and gotten the version with the movie posters.

They often just get an alliance, stick with the same person throughout multiple nexus phases, and then the game is bound to enter a stalemate, and fremen or spacing guild wins.

I plan to start a 4 person game of Twilight Imperium on Tuesday, continuing on Thursday, Sunday, into the following week if necessary
There will be 4 of us and none have ever played before - any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated
>>96143187Play something better, TI4 sucks
>>96143187My not very helpful suggestion is don't play it at 4. Taking two strategy cards feels almost obscene and really waters down that choice and having only 4 in play might feel a bit restrictive for your first game
That said these aren't gripes you should be thinking of for your first game. Just play it and don't overthink it, maximizing fun is more about your group and mindset than fiddling around with minutae.
Oh maybe if you play basegame don't let anyone play winnu, they are bad and not the fun kind of bad. Maybe also exclude sardakk which superficially seem straightforward and easy but are deceptively hard to play well, mostly because of their terrible start
>>96143187>>96143292I'll also add to it, just because of how powerful 2 action tiles are vs 1 (that you get in 5 or 6 player games) means that voting is rarely done because the game will end too fast. You will most likely miss the political phase a lot and that really bogs down the goofiness of the game.
>>96143187Use the map from the expansion, with the hyperlanes, as other anons said at 4 players every strategy card gets picked and each player gets two, so the economy is accelerated. Having more map per player accelerates it even more, but hyperlanes shrink the map and give each player a fairer, more similar to a 6 player game amount of territory. This also means you get into contact with each other faster and that means more battles earlier while they're still fun and scrappy.
>>96142950I've backed the 2e core box and digital edition on steam. Ive played few rounds on steam according the rules so havent tried alternate way. I'm not convinced that nominating more than one princess would help anything. I think that would break the balance a lot more. Nominating a princess already gives huge benefit to that player who chooses first or second.
>>96144079I mean in regards to playing with two players. I literally can only play with 4 players both online and offline.
>>96141437>>96142723I didn't ask for a psychology session, but constructive criticism to give them and actual tips.

Good games for background decoration as my wife gets railed by her bf?
>>96144692do you ever try to break up other alliances? like "hey, if we stay stalemated then Fremen or Spacing Guild will win. If we switch up and join forces instead we'd be able to leverage our positions to force an earlier win". Bonus points if your previous ally expended some of their resources to your benefit prior to this maneuver. I don't play a lot of Dune, so this could be overly simplistic, though I hope you get the sentiment.
Most of the time when I want to shake up a meta I've found it best to lead with an example of why another way can be superior.
>>96144762the entire ludography of one Cole Wehrle
Our gaming group is going through a borderline obsessive ancient Rome phase. We're considering getting Aeterna. What's the general consensus of it? Is it fun? If not, we'll probably get Onus. I know they're very different games, but it's just our plan b. Feel free to suggest other games to satisfy our autistic needs
>>96144763Suggested that, but they often don't really exploit the other ally, so they don't feel like another alliance would provide more benefit.
So even if I do, at the end the result is that I'm the one with a crap ally, and even if I didn't spend many resources at start, I will later to compensate.
>>96144692In dune you need to leverage your limited advantages at the right time to be able to win. Let's say that the guild player can't drop his soldiers to stop a win, your ally got weakened the last turn and you plus another player hold 2 strongholds while a worm shows up, you should at least consider dumping your ally and allying the other stronghold owner, aiming for the win since 2 players can no longer stop you
Instead if you spend your limited resources babysitting your weakened ally game will inevitably go to time

>>96144762Any game enjoyed by Space Biff
>>96145171>What does that even mean? They don't use the faction advantages afforded by the alliance? They do, but they tend to do that evenly, rather than granting them only when it's beneficial to them too. Exploiting one ally and then dump them rarely happens, even though that's what I would personally do myself. They don't think of the ally as a temporary partner that they should make use of.
So I wanted to hear common moves from other players, just to give them examples of what they could do.
>>96148182Ah, ok. That's another layer where only people who are remotely inclined to break the alliance would go for. Like if I play as Atreides, I only divulge the amount of information necessary to my ally about what cards other people are holding, but other than that, it takes a bit of that turncoat attitude not to do. Discounts are always applied, the emperor always lets their ally buy up all the treachery cards they want, etc.
Maybe my group is even worse in that sense, because it's not like it's "even", we just use each other's powers to the fullest.
>>96149005And dos that lead to a stalemat as much as it does in my group?

>>961494392 Games of Scout, Food Chain Magnate, Rajas if the Ganges and Nexus Ops. I didn't win anything but it was all pretty competitive, always nice to have close battles.
>>96149033No, in terms of inter-alliance conflict my group is very aggressive. It's not like people are generally playing passively. The Bene Gesserit player is always looking for opportunities to bait someone into losing a fat stack of troops with their advisors. The Harkonnen is always looking to push his advantage in treachery cards and destroy some poor sap with a la-la-la and a donkey. Etc.
Like I mentioned in the other post, our games rarely get to a turn 8, and when they do, it's a complete bloodbath. 70% of all units are sitting in the Tleilaxu tanks by that point. And when that happens, someone can easily dispatch of the few remaining units of their opponents and seal a victory.
>>96149439Nothing IRL unfortunately. Tried out Earthborne Rangers on TTS, and... It's interesting, but the whole frontloaded start where you have to pick from 80 different cards is just such a pain in the ass.
The game itself feels like a much slower version of 7th Citadel. And it's not like it's hard per se, it's very open-ended and the main "difficulty" is basically in how close you want to push to your card limit before the day ends. It's just obtuse and unintuitive, with two orthogonal action point systems that are intended as an "any kind of character can do anything", but work out as "why does my character who is the only one supposed to kill shit have almost no cards with conflict symbols".

Yo guys, looking for some advice on train games and other bullshit. A friend of a friend is legitimately a train autist, and I've always wanted to get into the heavier train/economics type games, so this is a perfect excuse. Anyone have any advice? Right now I'm looking at Chicago Express, Age of Rails (or another iron rails but I think age appeals most), age of steam. I was about to pick up power grid or Hansa Teutonica, and I know it's essentially the same with a different coat of paint, but anyone with some input or other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Ideally looking for a good way to introduce people to the economic bullshit fun, including myself, ideally playing in less than an hour and a half, but two hours ish isn't going to break us
I own and regularly pax porf, Ren, and pamir, as well as hex n chit wargames BS, like Agricola, terraforming Mars, blah blah blah. I'm not fussed about complexity, either in rules or in mastering the game, is what I'm trying to say

Might start playing games by myself again
>>96151439>18ChesapeakeHow does it compare to Shikoku 1889?
these 2 were suggested to me as beginner 18xx's and was told they focus on different aspects of 18xx's in general, what are the differences?
>>96151724You could resin them yourself if you like the base production aside from its fabrication materials. Very easy to do according to my deluxifier pal you just need to make sure to cure it properly and it's otherwise foolproof. Just be careful with double layered cutout boardsโif they have tighter tolerances they may no longer fit or be too tight.
>>96150792>how does this compare with Trajan? Not a clue, never played it. I can tell you how the game works and you may able to surmise some differences.
Basically, each turn, you take your ships from a port space representing an action, while getting resources equal to the amount of ships there, then spreading them in each spot that follows. This interacts with the main board, mostly, by allowing you to build, place, and move your ships along the different trade routes, giving you rewards for being the first to pass checkpoints and resching the final destination. The cities you pass also allow you to build at them, giving you extra benefits on your port and allowing you some exchange power that helps you handle extra resources or gather what you may need for whatever you are currently attempting to do. The scoring is done with amount of ships, buildings, and amphora you've collected multiplied separately by the amount of rewards you have acquired (plus some set symbols you collect as secondary rewards during the game) and you add that all up for your final score.
It's a really tight game, where thinking ahead and making those big plays feels ultra satisfying. The only part I dislike is the scoring, as it gets very point-salady, even though the process of the game doesn't make it feel as such as you kind of naturally gather all the scoring elements. The feeling of racing your boats down routes to beat your opponents to checkpoints and destinations fir better rewards is pretty cool.
tldr: Never played Trajan, but from what I can tell, it's pretty different.
>>96128383A good relaxed but still mentally stimulating is The Great Dalmuti card game. It was made by Richard Garfield, but nothing like MTG. Group card game for 4-10 players. Highly recommend for people new to board games and might be intimidated by a complicated board or many pieces.
>>96133425>What are your favorites?Martian Chess, Air Land and Sea, and Mandala

Teaching blighted reach for Arcs this week.
Feels like a lot of rules overhead just for the shared rules, nevermind the unique identities.
Any tips for smoothing out the teach?

I would genuinely recommend playing base game before Blighted Reach. It is worse, but it just needs to be 1 game. It just gets a bit too awkward to explain the campaign part of Blighted Reach alongside the actual basic mechanics of the game IMO.
>>96153181>has a HUMAN CONVERSATION online
>>96153175Ya, this particular group has three base games under its belt, Ive played 5.
Do you like playing Lost Cities with or without the extra Purple cards?
>>96153231You'll be fine then dude.
Is an anime aesthetic enough to make me go all in on a eurogame from l99? The answer is yes.
>>96153836I do not like playing Klondike Solitaire with extra steps
>>96154312>kikesharterA fool and his money etc.
Thanks to the anon that mentioned castle combo last (?) thread. Played a few rounds on bga and it actually is a good, statisfying 2p filler. Would have never even given it a chance from the name and art alone
>>96153836I play with because you have to make harder decisions on what to discard as there are more cards but the hand size remains the same.
>>96154499If you think Lost Kinos is anything close to solitaire then you haven't actually played the butt-clenching, bluff maxxing experience that is this game.
Played unmatched the other day with the gf and we both enjoyed it. Neither of us liked the licensing part of it. Any similar games that use completely original characters?

Honest thoughts on spirit island and expansions.
Personally, I actually enjoy the base game.
>>96155964>Honest thoughts on spirit island and expansions.I shit on it as a shibboleth but I've honestly never played it. I don't see the appeal of long co-ops.
>>96155964Jagged Earth is one of the best expansions for a board game Ive ever played. Ive been really enjoying the Nature Incarnate spirits, though some feel quite overtuned.
>>96155147it's definitely strongest at 2p
>>96155964I played it and don't wanna play again.
Bakery in progress.
Please wait while dough rises.
>>96155964No different from other coopslop other than it being more complex. If you like coops, I can see it being excellent. If you don't it won't change your opinion on the genre.
>>96156279>What game do you consider a great design yet don't feel like playing ever>What shit design do you keep on playing>Is putting suboptimal player counts on a box akin to a lie or is it just a welcome option to have (this includes solofaggotry)>What high player count game has been rotting on your shelf?
>>96156390>Is putting suboptimal player counts on a box akin to a lie or is it just a welcome option to have (this includes solofaggotry)It depends on the game but a lot of the time it seems like a lie. I think pic related should be more common, but honesty is probably bad for sales.
>What high player count game has been rotting on your shelf?Sidereal Confluence.
I've only gotten one play out of it so far.
I made the mistake of teaching it to a large group. The teach took 40 minutes because I kept having to repeat myself. Everyone was chatting with each other instead of paying attention.
I haven't been able to table it since because "it took too long" (it took 75 minutes) and "there were too many rules" (it's on the lower end of mid-weight no there were not).
>>96156520Was more to help baker OP, see his pic
Nontheless thanks for responding, this is they key point I wanted to make next thread if the question was in the OP; while I fucking hate exaggerated (noone can tell me 7p Caverna is a good experience) or flat out stupid (3p Dune, 4p WotR) playercounts as well as clumsy solo modules... I would do the exact same thing, just because a customer going well fuck that playercount, that's stupid is better than another one going huh doesn't play X players, won't get it then.
I assume a significant amount of people buy games they are on the edge about because there is a solo mode (that will never get played, but the potential is there)
>>96156746>I fucking hate [...] clumsy solo modules...How can you tell if they're clumsy?
>>96157065Clumsily designed. As in, a whole lot of extra components, flowcharts and new iconography that ultimately lead to spending +70% of your playtime administrating the shittily designed bot. Aka 95% of solo modes.
>>96157361Nameeee the best solo mode in the world... or I'll eat your soul
>>96157420Imperium classics/legends/horizons
The obly new companent is a souble sided card that keys cards in the bot civilizations deck to the actions they take.
Every civ bot is differently attuned to being peaceful, expansive, ruthless, prone to collapse, master market manipulator, etc, all while just using their standard deck of cards, their bot card, and maybe some modified set up rules.
>>96156746Honestly, I wouldn't want to play anything over 6 people that wasn't paper thin. Think Wavelengths, codenames, or typical party games
>>96157689That's where Formula D excels.
By the power of these 7s I proclaim TI4 to suck immeasureably.
>>96157775So close, but I still believe it
Arcs rule question: Can I catapult move yellow from the planet in 6, to the planet with all of the blue pieces in 5? Everything seems to say "Yes", but it's another case of "Unsure because Leder games love to provide examples for the weird fringe edge cases, but rarely standard moves"
>>96157823ya that is legal.
what matter is any space you enter being either a planet or occupied with enemy ships stops the catapult and your ships end there.
>>96157823The rules don't leave much ambiguity here. Are you leaving a space with loyal star port? Catapult move unlocked. Only upon entering a new space do you check for enemy pieces to see if you stop or continue the move.
>>96157823Yes. You can also leave some of the ships behind on the yellow planet, gate 6, and/or gate 5 if you want. But the ships can't end up anywhere else (unless all the gates are vacant and you take the long way around).
>>96157873>>96157865>>96157832Thanks. Two-handing this to learn everything. So far this game is brilliant, even if it is pretty complicated.
>>96158019You can't fool me anon that's a photo is from a three-player game. You're into foot stuff.
