My plan is:

>1. Meet up with a priest they're meant to escort back to another city. He's been killed by green skins
>2. Attacked by zombies left by the greenskins (long story) in the church see battlemap attached
>3. Track them to the dungeon
>4. go down elevator, skeleton archers in first room
>5. second room has greenskins (orcs and goblins probably), after a few rounds more come from the left barracks
>6. To the right is a trap like in resident evil the movie with the lasers, in the right room is loot
>7. Lava room has greenskin leader and bodyguards to retrieve the priest's journal

Not a lot of social encounters but a trap, I could add to it pretty easily. With new rooms and stuff like that, it's in dungeon alchemist so very easy to add whatever I want.

I find myself craving the game of D&D/Other Board Games more than vidya to a great degree, I'm 200+ hours into my new world I'm building on World Anvil.

TQ: Yes, time makes you better, hands down. What's most important?
>Players knowing what their characters can do
>Players not trying to "beat" the game with an OP build.
>Players just having fun and letting go of whatever fantasies they're chasing.

>DMs need to be able to improvise a whole session.
>DMs need a kind of memory that allows them to recall the important facts in a campaign with a handful of handy reminders.
>DMs need to allow fun, but say no when they need to. Use this carefully, but if a player is deciding more what's allowed than you, that's a bad sign.

Teach your players early on that running away is a viable strategy when faced with an overwhelming force.

>early levels, like 3rd
>walking through a forst
>suddenly the earth shakes
>behind the players see 12 hill giants charging towards them (an impossibly deadly encounter)
>roll initaitive
players are placed in the middle of the map with the hill giants on the other side
>at the top of initative, another 10 hill giants join initative. on the other side

The giants fight each other. They get unique attacks, like throwing fists full of gravel, or wide log swings to cleave stomping charges etc.

>after a round
Athletics, history, insight, or survival check, anyone with proficiency in any of them can roll. DC 5.
>failed check
you recall/notice how brutal this fight is gonna be, and you get the feeling that sticking around is a bad idea.
>successful check
>Atheltics/history
you've heard rumors among muscle heads of these games that hill giants play when they fight with all their might to determine who is the strongest. While impressive to watch, you also know that they are never fatal, and they are always hungry afterward. You get the feeling that sticking around is a bad idea.
>Insight
These giants are swinging their weapons with all their might, but their clubs seem to be wrapped in sheep skin with cotton still attached and are only aiming for body blows rather than the head, arms, or legs. They aren't really trying to hurt each other. While impressive to watch, you know their wounds won't be fatal, and they'll probably be hungry afterward. You get the feeling that sticking around is a bad idea.
>Survival
You spotted totally flattened stretches of forest before, and it appears this might be the reason why. While impressive to watch, you also know that they are never fatal, and they are always hungry afterward. You get the feeling that sticking around is a bad idea.

If you really wanna scare them, have a stray rock go flying and hit a player.

I desperately wish I could have a thrice-weekly 4 hour gaming session from 7 PM to 11 PM on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday with a party of four: A Cleric, a Fighter, a Rogue, and a Wizard. What a retarded post? You shouldn't share the solution to the puzzle until everyone figures it out? If everyone is secretly holding onto the answer and waiting for the others, how will they know when everyone else discovers the answer, when they themselves are keeping it from each other?

It is entirely fair to share what you think is the answer to a puzzle when you've figured it out out-of-character. That's the point of a fucking puzzle.

The point of a game is for everyone to have fun. If you weren't autistic you would know this. When someone is telling a joke you don't spoil the punchline before the others get a chance to hear it. When there's a riddle you don't immediately answer if you've heard it before. These are basic things normal human beings understand you autismo.

What are your thoughts about building around the Aarakocra race? +2 to DEX and +1 to WIS means it fits about half of the classes in the core rules very well, and while other races may have an innate flying speed as well, none are as fast as the Aarakocra's 50 feet per round. Coupled with features the Monk's Unarmored Movement or the Rogue's Cunning Action, this adds up quickly. After the flying speed, it has no meaningful racial features (if you have an idea where the 1d4 unarmed strike makes an actual difference, I would love to hear about it). What is your own best Aarakocra idea?

To be fair, a lot of gms are really bad at making puzzles. Or are at least really bad at describing what the characters are looking at so you end up wasting loads of time because he forgot to mention something that was supposed to be obvious that was critical to solving it.

Do you have a go to length/level cap for a campaign? Currently thinking of running one for my usual group after we are done with the one the GM is running; was thinking of going around 4/5 to 13/14, don't want to run something too long and I feel like its beyond that level range that things gets harder to manage (longest campaign I was in had us going from 4 to 16).

Gonna be quite honest, if your campaign is starting at any level but level 1, my interest is immediately decreased. Impatient zoomers feel entitled to start at level 3. That's retarded. So I get to level 20 and realize I don't feel like I "accomplished" anything. That'd be like if I wrote my books with AI and got published, yeah I'd still have my money but it sure wouldn't feel like I accomplished anything. You'd think vidya brained zoomers would understand this, but I guess in the age of handholding tutorials in all video games now, that's all gone too. FromSoft games are cancer but at least they attract someone who actually wants to earn their victory. Starting at level 3 or 4 in DnD is like that. You're just skipping the early part to get right to the powerwank. I bet you're running your campaign online too. Zoomers only like starting at level 1 if it's for fuckin Death Mansion in Curse of Strahd which is the default campaign all of those sรถy slurpers. I'm sorry anon but the best level to start is at level 1 and see how far you can get. Anything else is gay. And don't give me that "I've played too many games to start at level 1 again" I've been running games for 20 years now and I still start at level 1. Anyhring else ruins the game.

Fuck off. If you're going to make a choice, you make that choice. You don't get to make two attacks and say "yeah I'm refluffing that as two weapon fighting" or use a greatsword and say "yeah I'm refluffing it as a shortsword that I'm really good with" no fuck off faggot, if the rules don't represent anything to do with what you're actually doing in the game then they have no meaning. You are not playing D&D 5e, you are not playing a legitimate roleplaying game, and you honestly deserve to be mocked and derided for even suggesting such a thing. No, you don't get to just "lol I refluff this" because that's not how the fucking game works you fucking faggot. Get the fuck over it. "I'm a battlemaster fighter who uses a sword but I refluffed it as me being a monk who disarms with his fists"..... "ok why?" ...."because I want to" ....and in the 2019 current year of Critical Roll where sucking off your players' dicks is the DM's number one job because ((((fun)))) is the number one priority (translation: pussified baby bitch power wank), that is all they need to say.

But I don't allow that shit and any DM who does is literally not a dungeon master because they are literally not playing D&D.

inb4 fauxbertarian "people can play whatever they want" no fuck off this shit actively dumbs down the game and leads to completely abstractified narrative shit because god forbid you can't make a character who kills 50 people with a fork because HAHAHA I saw a shitty /tg/ greentext where it happened. Anyone who wrote a "hilarious nat20 greentext" back in the day should be hunted down and killed with a fucking chainsaw, they literally ruined the D&D fanbase with this cancerous normie-magnet "haha epic funny thing" shit.

>4-hour gaming session
Iโ€™d turn that down on principle. Anything shorter than 6 hours isnโ€™t worth running, with 8 hours being my groupโ€™s preferred session length. You get more quality out of longer contiguous time blocks because the energy keeps moving.
>only a single day of prep for most sessions
From a DMing perspective, absolutely not. Some of my best ideas come from letting my mind wander over the prep Iโ€™ve done over the past few days and suddenly seeing connections. You need some distance from yourself so that your ideas can breathe and you donโ€™t end up stuck in tunnel vision. I always try to devote at least twice as much time to prep as the session will actually take.

Am I understanding Vex correctly here
I attack a creature and deal damage. I now have advantage on my next attack before the end of my next turn.
I have extra attack and attack again with advantage, and deal damage. I have used up the previous instance of Vex, but applied a new one.
Next turn I start off with advantage against this creature

Finally figured out how to make an interesting "city arc" for my players. The king tells them that they are doing such a good job of ending organized crime that he wants to hold a parade in their honour. First of all, respect, recognition of past achievements, until they eventually realize that the king, maybe without realizing it, has painted five massive targets on their backs. The remaining gangs are cornered now, and as dangerous as only gangs fearing for their own collective well-being can be.

Had one in the last group I was in. Guy had some half-vampire rogue (and he was very insistent on the character being a half-vampire and not a dhampir) with more backstory than God who was all about stopping some vampire from enacting an eternal night. To my knowledge, that wasn't originally the main focus of the campaign, but the DM kept working in angles relating to it because otherwise the guy would get pouty and disinterested. He also kept begging for hilariously overpowered abilities to be true to his character concept, but even if the DM gave him that stuff, he'd forget about it literally the next session. He'd forget about his regular features too - we made it all the way to tenth level, and despite being the apparent star of the campaign with a bevy of busted-ass superpowers, he could not have told you a single thing his character could do besides Sneak Attack (and even then, he couldn't have told you how to proc it). The DM ultimately ended the game in frustration after he gave the guy's character yet another busted superpower, only for the guy to complain that it wasn't the right thematic kind of superpower.

my party recently made it to a secluded town thats been having unexpected issues with monsters and whatnot showing up, typical stuff. what i think threw the group though was a small misunderstanding from the old guy they were talking to that made it sound like everyone just gathers in the church and prays the danger away. i figured that the old man in question wouldnt have much of an idea about what really went on during the attacks since he always booked it to the church meaning that he would miss the other old-timers moonlighting as heroes, but recently ive been wondering if theres something more interesting i can do in line with his perspective.
should i just leave it as is? i feel like i always second guess my original designs when it comes to stuff like this. a divine intervention angle might be interesting and i have the luxury of the party not knowing much of anything about the area, but doubling back at this point just feels sort of weird to me even if it might yield more interesting thematic results

there's always something more interesting to be thought of the more time you spend on it. What should decide if you switch from original plan is
1 .if it's more fun for the players
2. if it doesnt retcon something they have already seen/confirmed.

Do not hold to some arbitrary and completely useless idea of what you had in mind originally as if you were married to it. That doesnt matter, it's some nogames shit from people who have never created anything. Change things up as long as they are changeable, ie as long as it doesnt retcon something that are happened in game (instead of in your head when prepping)

The game is probably dead. After games get cancelled twice unless people are very keen they die at least 50% of the time. At 3 cancellations you might as well start planning the next campaign. You might get one or two more sessions sporadically then people will just lose interest.

Did the group not agree on a time to play or something? What does he mean, there will "be no game"?
My fortnightly game will reschedule on request every so often, and if it can't be done the player who couldn't make the regular session misses out. The only games that actually got cancelled were when I the DM was overseas and not able to run. We might have taken a break over Christmas last year too, can't remember.
Weekly games we'll skip once every couple of months if a player's unavailable, but never twice in a row unless two of four players are unavailable (hasn't happened) or the DM's the one who's unavailable.

Sometimes life be like that man, 3 of our 6 players have kids and a lot of the time schedules don't match. Just gotta be consistent, our game has been going for 5+ years now and we're reaching the end of the campaign. Our rule of thumb is that if one person can't make it, we go ahead and someone else will play their character. If 2 people can't make it, then we call it off and try again next week. The beauty of this hobby is that you can drop a campaign and pick it up again with basically zero downside.

Too much combat for me honestly. The battles are the delicious gravy of the dish, the meat should be social interactions with exploration potatoes.

With a focus on social interactions you donโ€™t burn people out in combat, which is a game killer. Still, if you can improvise and keep your combats interesting enough, you could still have a good game.

Me? 15 exploration, 15 players crafting or exploring unique traits, 20 combat, 20 social interactions, 10 shopping, and ~20 to put wherever the players are having the most fun that day.

The Standout Spells for this feat via Class imo:

You could just homebrew it to say
>(Homebrew) Combat. The familiar is an ally to you and your allies. The familiar shares your Initiative count, but it takes its turn immediately before or after yours (your choice). A familiar can't attack, but it can take other actions as normal.

I don't view it as some antagonistic player v DM thing- its simply just "That creature is getting frrustrated that it can't avoid an attack while this creature is distracting it, so its going to take it out or use an AOE."
I'd do that with familiars, summons, subclass companions, npc companions, items or terrain features that cause problems to an enemy. Why would they allow it to continue to happen if its making their job harder?

Question for some opinions from you anons! What do you flavor Force damage like? We've got a few NPC Creatures that deal primarily force damage from its weapon strikes the examples...

Balor
>Lightning Blade. Melee Attack Roll: +14, reach 10 ft. Hit: 21 (3d8 + 8) Force damage plus 22 (4d10) Lightning damage, and the target can't take Reactions until the start of the balor's next turn.
&
>Flame Whip. Melee Attack Roll: +14, reach 30 ft. Hit: 18 (3d6 + 8) Force damage plus 17 (5d6) Fire damage. If the target is a Huge or smaller creature, the balor pulls the target up to 25 feet straight toward itself, and the target has the Prone condition.

Empyrean
>Sacred Weapon. Melee Attack Roll: +17, reach 10 ft. Hit: 31 (6d6 + 10) Force damage, and the target has the Stunned condition until the start of the empyrean's next turn. The target can choose not to be Stunned, in which case it takes an extra 21 Force damage that bypasses Resistance or Immunity.

Pit Fiend
>Fiery Mace. Melee Attack Roll: +14, reach 10 ft. Hit: 22 (4d6 + 8) Force damage plus 21 (6d6) Fire damage.

Ultroloth
>Mercurial Whip. Melee Attack Roll: +9, reach 15 ft. Hit: 25 (6d6 + 4) Force damage, and the ultroloth can teleport the target up to 10 feet to an unoccupied space the ultroloth can see that isn't in the air.

I might be boring, but I simply explain it as if its the normal damage but unresistable. Like An Empyrean's Sacred Weapon that looks like a Greatsword "cuts" like Slashing but would tear through anything it touched. Or the Pit Fiend here's mace would be capable of crushing anything it strikes.

>False
Let's say that in one minute, ten turns game time, three creatures blessed, hell, let's max it out at one attack and save per turn.
>60
Times the average of 1d4 (2.5)
>150 net stat gains
Now remember that if you still fail, by rolling a 4 or something, it doesn't help at all. With that average, we'll calculate an adjusted 3 to 8 on a d10 weapon (Halfway between two handed and one handed) that you rolled results in a real gain of 5 every time you hit.
>5 dpr difference
with 150 extra points in attack and saves, I'll divide by the average roll challenge
>15
15 attacks that hit or saves that work now with the blessing. Damage saved/done? let's use 5 average
>75
75 damage saved or done, divided by the average from every hit as a martial, let's say 2/3 hit. 75/5x1.5
>22.5 turns
So in 22.5 turns, you will get that interest back on average. Not to mention losing concentration or a waste of concentrating on a better spell. A fighter with this background will have much more use than a fighter with this very spell anyway!

My math is subject to review, if I missed anything obvious. As well, I took some liberties with my estimates, not going into a dissertation.

they been travelling with bbeg in disguise unbeknownst to them for a few adventures, despite hints
they been occasionally teleported back/ summoned magically temporarily to homebase by npc ally to get supplies/updates, been happening a few times with no problems
they arrived at new fortified settlement to which they were only granted access (along with bbeg in disguise) because of what they did to help other settlement while travelling with bbeg in disguise
bbeg wanted to get inside new settlement to retrieve mcguffin, so used party as cover, but is also part of its goals to deceive and betray
during evening in new settlement they enjoyed baths, games, were all relaxed and enjoying recent victories, shopping etc.
small hints that something is odd about the bbeg's familiar, been going on for a few sessions, they start investigating further, but it's invisible
friendly npc back home calls to summon them again, saying they have urgent new info about bbeg, asks permission to teleport them back, they agree
something goes wrong with summoning, they are stuck in ethereal plane because interference of local settlement peculiar thing
suddenly they watch helpless as the new settlement gets attacked by minions, the disguised familiar of bbeg they thought was a normal familiar instead is a quasit killing the guards and opening gates
bbeg minions flood in, they slaughter people, party watches powerless through ethereal plane, trying to affect and warn people but nothing
they rush to see if their friend bbeg in disguise is safe, as the minions approach, it's revealed he is in fact in command of the minions, was the bad guy they been pursuing all along
cut to black

party in shock, didnt expect the betrayal, but realize the glitch on summoning probably saved their lives and gives them a chance to arrive by surprise as the bbeg was about to murder them first before the attack, aware of the danger they might pose to his plans

The actual math on savage attacker bonus is on average less than 1 for a d4, and 2 for a d12 (1.34 for 2d6).

In terms of offense, it's pathetic. in terms of defense or utility: none. The latter is more important since the post I quoted listed a slew of offensive, defensive, and utility options. While savage attacker does one thing and does it poorly.

I thought you were wrong about that, but apparently they changed the rules and that is how it works. It does come with a downside, though: the new rules prevent you from casting a reaction spell and an action spell on your turn. Probably won't be a problem very often, though. Although I guess it means I can't combine Silvery Barbs with Heightened Spell for extra-disadvantage like I was hoping to. Actually, I guess I could if I make it my Magic Initiate spell. Could only do it once a day, but I'm okay with that. I only want that combo available to make Disintegrate really hard to save against, and you can only cast that once a day anyway. Feels like kind of a loophole, though.

Nah, that already says you can't use your Action Surge action to take the Magic action. I don't know why the rule exists. If Quickened Spell is overtuned, why can you quicken a fireball but cast fireball with your action using a scroll? It's simpler than the old rule but now a wizard can cast Magic Missile and Healing Word if they use Magic Initiate's free cast for the latter but a straight cleric without Magic Initiate can't cast Guiding Bolt and Healing Word. There being all these ways to cast without a spell slot just adds flavourless mechanical cruft imo. It's a rule I wouldn't bother with, personally.

I know my games are worse than they could had been, it doesn't matter if the end result is good because I know I fucked up.
But to have imposter syndrome you have to do something of value. Your friends tolerating you isn't really a position you don't deserve, it should be the base line, if your friends don't want to be there then the issue is not how you run games.

Does Dispel Magic have to end every effect on a creature, or can you be selective with it? Like let's say a fighter gets Haste cast on them but then gets Hold Person'd, could I choose to only dispel the paralysis and leave the Haste active?

Using 2014 rules, dropping is a free action while sheathing is an object interaction (free, 1 per turn). He won't be able to unsheathe it to threaten an AoO with the weapon.

Using 2024 rules, sheathing and dropping are both item interactions (free, 1 per turn). Sheathing a weapon to draw another one as part of an attack action, or after an attack, is the only time when it's free.

How overpowered would a staff that lets druids cast wizard spells be? Example: it has 3 charges per day that let you use druid spell slot to cast ANY wizard spells of 2 or 3 levels lower. So a druid could use a 3rd level druid slot plus one of the 5 staff charges to cast magic missile, for example. This would be some insane versatility and I considered making it a preset list or something. I want this to be a legendary item that comes in 2 helical staffs that intertwine so it won't be easy to find, but I also don't want to make the guy a straight up gestalt caster. Any suggestions for making this concept somewhat balanced?

You could sort out by schools if you want to make a different list, or you could use this list and then include a few other spells you want him to have.

Don't include shield, because if I were him, I'd just save all my charges for shield. That's why I limited it to [1 action].

>>96146422
That might be better yeah.
The lore is that a druid who multiclasses into wizard, and a wizard who multiclasses into druid, collaborated to make the two halves of the staff. So it'll have some innate spells on its own, but when combined allows that sort of spell conversion in some way.

imo, those are far more creative than an I win button force field that allows you to just wail on an enemy without any counterplay. at least with those spells, you need to think of what to do next.

Unfortunately for the purple worm and all the cool shit it could do, it's functionally retarded so it couldn't plan to destabilize the ground beneath you and try to suffocate you, or swallow a mouth full of stones to spit at you

it'd just mindlessly attack you until it eats you, or it dies.

How is 5e (2024) from a DM's perspective? Is it a significant improvement to run as DM? It seems at a glance that PCs are made more powerful quicker than before, but doesn't necessarily mean it would better to run like that. I am always running the games, and I'm not much for roleplaying and am light on story. I lean on the mechanics, charts, and maps. So the better resources I have, the more enjoyable the game is to run for me cause I am not good at acting. I have my 5e books and notes back in my home state so I am debating on starting over with the new books. Plus it is an opportunity to start fresh with my setting. At the same time, I just want to continue with what I already know cause it's easier for me to explain and troubleshoot for new players. I would appreciate the input.

People at my unit were talking about DnD. I overheard the conversation and joined in. Now they want me to be a DM because I have the most experience. I've been playing since 3.5 and have played other TTRPGs outside of DnD, but I haven't played anything in 3 years so ok no problem. They told me there's another 5th edition that just came out, which I was unaware of. All 4 of the players are fairly new to DnD and mostly know it through Stranger Things (I haven't seen it). It seems like a fun opportunity to get to know everyone.

It's fine. Strip out the copper wiring (Basic rules) and have your players make characters with RAW for the first few games. Slowly add in homebrew if you even want it at all.

My experience? I just use the rules for basics then I add whatever I need. There's no good crafting system in 5.5, but I made up my own.

All in all, could be worse, but you're also getting invested in one of the most popular games, meaning you'll have a much easier time finding players.

From a DM perspective 5.5e is nearly identical to 5e. A strong majority of changes are player-side and while those are good for a DM to know to help newer players, it's also not your job to know all the player's stuff. A note though:

Backwards compatibility is iffy, I recommend restricting player options to PHB only while you're getting a feel for how the game does things.

The 5.5E DMG is absolute trash. It provides almost no procedures and very few random tables. Lately I've been running 5.5E but taking procedures (dungeon turns, terrain and dungeon generation, random encounters, and base building) from the AD&D DMG. I've also been experimenting with Chainmail rules for mass combat. I think the 5.5E PHB is overall an improvement over 5E though.

contemporary gamers have been liking more curated content and have there's a lot of people who dislike or don't care for random encounters because it doesn't push the 'narrative' alone or whatever.

i personally am not terribly offended if the DMG doesn't have random tables, as there's so much available resources for random encounter generation that using page space for it doesn't really matter.

I don't have a "narrative" in my campaigns. Stories and roleplaying arise naturally from the rules and procedures of the game. In my opinion the mainstream style of modern D&D is just the DM telling a story that should have been a book while the players are just glorified dice rollers, which sucks. I like the random aspect in that even I as the DM don't know what's going to happen.
I make my own tables as well, especially for dungeons, but often use AD&D as a starting point. I find AD&D's tables are elegant and mostly make sense.

false dichotomy between narrative and randomly generated events/encounters
also you're assuming handpicking encounters means predetermining their outcomes, which is also inaccurate

if you randomly roll a kobold settlement then randomly roll a rope bridge obstacle, you tie them together: the kobolds built the bridge. That's basic narrative

if you handpick that the kobold settlement is here and the bridge there, it doesnt mean you decided the party had to cross it

Depends on if they are accustomed to combat, or are just wearing the shield for protection. It makes a difference. A battle mage, a mage trained for war, would wear the shield of strength. A wizard who spends most of his time in a lab and only has a shield for added protection would wear it on offhand

imo.

Of course random encounters get tied to the world somehow. No one is referring to these trivial details when they complain about "pushing the narrative". When TTRPG players speak of narrative, they're usually referring to a grand narrative of the player characters that spans "story arcs" or even the whole campaign. When these narratives are largely plotted out in advance by the DM, players are just following along a track and filling in minor details like whether or not they decided to use the kobold bridge to cross the gap.

Anyone know a system similar to 5e thatโ€™s much lower fantasy than what 5e assumes? Like where a single ghoul could be a massive monster that you need to prepare for, or where youโ€™d have to travel far and wide to meet a wizard. Technically speaking you can do that in 5e, but the classes and system very much assume magic is commonplace and creatures like ghouls are trashmobs

I know OSR is the place to look, but thatโ€™s quite a broad genre at this point

Going to get licensed out like Monopoly and new 'official' books will be contractors using AI remote workers

>Are we going downhill towards pay to play platforms owned by WotC?

Won't even get that, Sigil was scrapped. Hasbro is trying to direct sales max, book stores getting completely screwed, now many are not ordering more D&D books because D&DB is undercutting them

>What's the general consensus on our TTRPG's future?

Hasbro is MLP'ing it, makes a comeback in five or ten years. Alt season for TTRPGs, where everyone is trying to do direct sales with the big Diamond Comic bankruptcy, with PF2E and Daggerheart being the big ones

Was planning to introduce Volo as an NPC in the game I'm running, and after reading some of his wiki, I saw that he is an Anchor for the Weave and one of Mystra's chosen. What would this mean in terms of roleplaying him? Does he just Mr. Magoo himself out of danger that should otherwise kill him? If someone did manage to take him out, what would that mean as far as the Weave is concerned?

based on the small blurb in the wiki it sounds like Mystra / Elminster might have done some shenanigans to keep him alive and would deus ex machina him out of death

he's also found himself in very dangerous locations - like during the bhaalspawn crisis in baldurs gate 2 throne of bhaal he's in Saradush while that town is put to siege by fire giants and he escapes

I have a problem player in our friend group who, while fine outside of game, turns into a human Goblin while in game
He is only capable of playing CE characters who do the most buckwild random shit that helps nobody and actively hurts the party
Suchas
>Randomly go over to dock to flash tits at sailors. Get told to fuck off. Comes back and burns the ship while they sleep, killing most of them and lighting a portion of the town on fire. Party loses potion source for early adventuring
>Party acquires crucial item to defeat evil guy and are trying to examine it to see how it work. Dickhead asks to see it. The group does so because he has high Arcana. He yeets it into a flowing river and the item is lost. This actually caused an unwinnable boss fight ten sessions later where we lost the campaign but that's another story
>Party is attempting to enter city with some NPCs. The guards do not want to let the Cleric NPC in because they are very anti-religion. Dickhead murders the NPC in front of them to solve the issue. They bar the party from entering on pain of death. Night falls, zombies come out, everyone dies.
>Actively refuses to assist in combat because they created a character whose goals do not align with the party. This gradually leads to everyone quitting and the campaign dies.
His defense is always "It's my alignment"

First our DM's banned creating Chaotic Evil characters. He made characters then alignment shifted them to CE. DM bans all CE characters and states if you shift to one you have to reroll a new character. Instead he makes "CN" characters and alleges he isn't being CE he's being CN. DM now bans CN as well, and NE for good measure. Player makes a TN character and pedantically sits on his ass doing nothing because it's "in character."
We've now reached a point where when we're forming a group for campaigns, if he joins, the group changes their mind and leaves (unless they're new to his BS). All but one won't DM for him anymore.
Why are people like this?

They think D&D is a video game where their actions don't affect anyone's enjoyment except their own because everyone else is an NPC in their eyes
They're actually an asshole deep down and there being no real consequences to being an asshole in a ttrpg environment means they can finally go mask off

I speak from experience because I have an IRL friend who is also an asshole CN/CE "it's what my character would do" type of player who either doesn't contribute at all or will make decisions for his character's benefit but to the detriment of the party

how do you handle this in a non-combat situation?
If you're on ethereal, you cant walk through living things. I'm assuming this is really a rule for combat, but it has consequences for exploration where for example you could bump into things and they would feel something there?
I've made it like there's a vital force that keeps things apart and the cluless material plane dont feel like they just bump into someone, just they got moved, but im curious if there's a better to handle it

party is gonna be scouting enemy from ethereal plane and inevitably they gonna start touching things and try to affect creatures and I dont want it to get weird

New fighter feels more fun with the changes in general. Weapon masteries, more second winds, using second winds to boost skills, you feel like you have options and choices even without battlemaster. I played a psi warrior and really enjoyed it. The issue with fighter is still that there is often no reason to attack you over say the rogue in light armor flanking. At least with psi warrior I could reduce the damage to them.

All fighters are a great now.

Battle master was dethroned with the changes to GWM and SS, precision is not the be all end all that was previously. But giving yourself custom attacks and additional damage will always be cool.

Eldritch knight came out as a huge winner with no limits on the spells they can pick, combined with the change to ritual casting means they can bring huge utility to the game. War magic is amazing now, they can cast booming blade/green flame blade and an attack on any attack action, which includes action surge and haste.

Champion is now resectable, with a lot of smaller buffs that make it into a well-rounded fighting machine. Heroic Warrior is the bees knees. It's a survival tool, a damage tool, a utility tool, and doesn't go away after combat.

Psiwarrior isn't as hyped up as the other three, but psionic strike and telekinetic movement are underrated. Psionic strike isn't a rider like smite, it can't be used on crits to get double damage. but it IS its own source of damage, so for features like concentration, it triggers its own concentration check. And telekinetic movement lets you lift and move a horse sized object, which not a lot of classes can do at 3rd level. But if I could buff psiwarrior:

>psionic dice
you get bonus dice equal to your INT mod
>protective field
- damage reduced is the number rolled + twice your INT mod
- you gain a free use, and you regain the free use when you roll initiative.
>Psionic strike
- damage dealt is the number rolled + twice your INT mod
- you gain a free use, and you regain the free use when you roll initiative.
>Telekinetic Movement.
Bonus action, rather than a normal action.
>psi-powered leap
its free use also recharges when you roll initiative, grants the feather fall effect at the end of turn, and you can use it as a reaction to gain the feather fall effect.
>Telekenetic master
every feature that grants a free a use recharges on a short rest/initiative grants an additional free use

Wolves are surprisingly dangerous for newbie adventurers. Will-o'-wisps can execute downed enemies as a bonus action, which along with their invisibility and mobility makes them very scary. A single banshee can potentially wipe a team in one move if they cock up their saves.

I have a random question. I'm planning to run a DND game with some cool people from my work but I think starting them with 5e might be a little too complex.

I remember starting out playing a DnD lite system 15 years ago which was very simple, with each class being just a single a4 piece of paper. My plan was to start them in that game and see how they go, as most have very little ttg experience. It had all the regular classes like paladin and rogue, so it should work.

I'm pretty sure the name was something like "dungeons and dragons", but instead was "X and X". Does anybody know the system I'm thinking of? I've looked but I can't remember for the life of me.

Wild Shape went from Action to Bonus Action, and you don't get crazy amounts of health anymore, is there anything we're missing?

>i looked through a video and it just seems so much worse now
>what were the buffs? do you get more than 2 per short rest?
-free skills are nice, it previously gave nature or arcana and now gives both
-You get shots base on INT/short rest. So if you invest in 16 int, you get at least 1 extra shot per vs the previous version, easy enough to get with a starting int of 15 and a feat like fey touched or shadow touched. you could dump INT if you think you can reliably get a headband of intellect and if you really invest, you could get up to 5 shot/short rest.
-scaling damage dice. The old version just has 0d6/2d6 and doubles at 18th level. Now all shots do damage, and progressively get stronger at 10th, 15th, and 18th
-Every ready shot moves down to 7th from 15th so you get more shots in a day for most of the campaign

Grasping was nerfed, but every other shot was buffed to either do damage initially or do more damage, or buffed via the scaling granted at other levels.

Beguiling now let you choose yourself as a target of admiration, so the enemy can't attack you. piercing now deals 2 die rolls of damage, if you can line up two targets, thats (d8+2d6+dex)x2, save for half. Even better if you can line up a third in a hallway.

And I suppose being able to use any ranged weapon should also go without saying. Obviously a buff.
