>5e game with a different name
No wonder people don't give a shit, anon.
You would do better getting a game that is similar enough to 5e that players are cool with trying it but different in enough ways it makes them realize 5e is dog shit so they want to try even more outside stuff.
Shadow of the Demon Lord fills that role pretty nicely.

Only thing I'm interested in is how they messed up the classes. Since they rushed it out to release before 5.5e, I figure they didn't do all that much though.

As a general rule for myself, I just don't bother even looking at any RPG that is trying to be D&D without being D&D, anymore. Not because I like D&D more, but I know that these things are either so much like D&D that they offer nothing new worth the time to read, or they're just D&D with a gimmick, and either way, it's going to make my table ask "why aren't we just playing D&D instead?" even though we wouldn't want to do that either.

I guess they hoped to be what pathfinder 1e was to 3.5e.

>Shadow of the Demon Lord fills that role pretty nicely.
That's the feeling I get too.
If you want to stop playing 5e you might as well go play weird wizard or demon lord.

It sure is really fucking weird being in an era where it feels like just as many fantasy D&D clones are being made, but instead of being heartbreakers, they're all just kind of mediocre

I always found the name so damn stupid, maybe it's for the best so I don't get drawn to try a system I'd never get to actually play.

How is weird wizard different than Demon Lord?

Honest question because I haven't really had the desire to give it a shot since DL fills the role well for my group. People mainly just say "It's very different and isn't compatible" but haven't really said much beyond it having characters be more heroic and the setting being tamer and more high fantasy.

Like, what changed nuts and bolts wise?

It's the change of perspective, a ton of stuff called a heartbreaker back in the 90's was terribly mediocre stuff with a coat of paint. They type of thing that would jump to become a 3e clone with the OGL in the 00's. The trully weird stuff, using domino pieces instead of dice, weren't treated as heartbreakers or aknowledged at all.

Pathfinder also worked because Paizo was running Dragon magazine and had the contact information of a massive swathe of an unusually invested and informed portion of the 3.5 playerbase. That lack of connection to D&D players that actually buy shit is why a variety of 3.75's from respected 3PPs like Green Ronin flopped.

The only people that could pull that off now would be Roll20 or D&D Beyond before WotC bought them.

Fantasy Heartbreakers specifically referred to D&D knock-offs that were passion projects usually with a few original good ideas of their own buried in something that is either just exactly like D&D or otherwise inferior to D&D, meaning they never had a fucking chance, because who really needs a fucked up version of D&D that has a few decent ideas? Now there's not even some decent ideas, just some minimalist tweaks. Even the newest edition of D&D is just the same edition but with some rules clarifications and adjustments to a few things.

Likewise. The glut of hyperminimalist high lethality OSR games all just blend together to me and not a single one even has the decency to suggest it has something unique and cool to offer.

At least Old School Essentials doesn't lie about it being nothing more than B/X that has been reformatted for ease of reference and nothing more. Most other OSR games are "like B/X but....." and offer nothing of note but different window dressing.

>I know literally no one who is interested in trying this shit out.

They made the classic blunder, no Free Basic rules. If people can't check out your game without paying $119+tax+tip, then they're just not going to bother.

Truthfully, the entire rules being free is what helps the most. 5e was doing kind of poorly until piracy got quality PDFs out and 5e.tools got made.
Meanwhile, Pathfinder has its SRD, so you could see everything rules, you were paying for the lore/world, art, adventures, and gameplay aids like miniatures.

>hey made the classic blunder, no Free Basic rules.
I've seen more indie systems try to release free SRDs and plain text versions of their books just so people can actually play the game with as few hurdles as possible, but a lot of games still don't get how fucking important it is for people to be able to get their hands on the rules and be able to actually try out the whole game without dropping any money first. If people won't even play your game for free, why the fuck would they spend any money on the book? And if it doesn't matter to the designer if people play the game or not, and they just want to sell books, why the fuck should anyone support them and what the fuck are they doing selling games in the first place?

If rules are free, why would I spend money on a book? For the sense of accomplishment I receive for pissing $20-$40 away for something that I already have for free?

Oh, so for shit that you could already do for free if you weren't a faggot that likes to waste money, got it.

There is literally nothing wrong with spending money on hobbies if you can afford it. There's nothing virtuous about being broke.

I ran a game of Fantasy Craft for 2 years with pirated PDFs 3 people at my table enjoyed it so much that they bought their own copies of the core book and the supplemental book. Sometimes, it's nice to have the physical copy to page through and sometimes you like something enough to want to support the creators.

Every RPG is technically free if you know how to find PDFs, anyways.
