I've been playing in W&G for about five sessions and I think I prefer it over the old FFG systems. It's much more conducive to high-octane action and being bad-asses; so if you're looking for grim and grittiness, you probably want to stick with FFG.

NTA; but unlike the old FFG lines, W&G is not geared towards a particular type of campaign. There are options for Imperium characters from hive scum to inquisitors, as well as options for Orks and Eldar.
Though technically a homebrew fan supplement, there's a PDF called Abundance of Apocrypha which was written by one of the original developers and seems to be well-regarded and often used by players. It has more options for all of the above plus Tau, Dark Eldar, and Chaos.

One player selects a Rogue Trader and the rest select various Human archetypes (not xenos, they're icky!). Then you go to the approved Koronus Expanse, fight approved xenos and heretic forces, collect approved treasures, watch your stock market number go up, and at GM-determined stock market number you declare the game complete, patting yourselves on the back for nailing the approved 40k themes.

Screenshot 2025-07-19 at 23-03-12 Acquisitions Rogue Trader The Burning Expanse Obsidian Portal
Rolled 6 + 1 (1d10 + 1)

Fuck it. Rogue Trader ship battles time. You have 150 Ship Points to assemble a task force. Archeotech is permitted only via the Reliquary of Mars ship history, which must be rolled for. You may choose not to roll for a ship history. Machine Spirit oddities will not be used, background packages are not permitted. Battle will use Mathhammer rules. For Crew Rating, roll a d6 - 1 is 40, 2-3 is 50, 4-5 is 60, 6 is 70. For simplification, shipboard actions will be resolved with the rules for NPC starships from BFK p.114, including those regarding morale and crew population (double Crew Rating's bonus to these calculations).
I'm not an attack craft guru so if you start using that you'd better damned well have the rules on lockdown, with page number references.
If you want special torps, roll for 'em, fucko. You get a single acquisition test against PF 80, each success is one volley for one ship. Remember the malus from rarity, dipshits, you're not getting six volleys of Vortex no matter how godlike your rolls.
I'll get to working on my flagship while I wait to see if there's any interest.

Just steal Eisenhorn and file off the serial numbers if you're doing multiple inquisitors rather than a single group of acolytes. You're all investigating X chaos cults and they run into this noble house a few steps up the chain and end up bumbling into each other. They co-operate, they manage to luck out and catch the House out, the House is actually a front for a radical phaenonite inquisitor a step up. To get to the Inquisitor you need to do something vaguely radical-ish (Not something like the Pontius, that'd give the game away) but some sort of infiltration or sneaky thing to get X artefact that'll reveal what the House was up to for this inquisitor. When they get it they manage to kill the house and an army group or two, only the inquisitor to start fucking with them at a distance. To clear their names - or start unfucking their networks - they have to find this guy. In finding him it's a goddamned mess, and offer them a few shortcuts in exchange for a little bit of corruption. Maybe just ask that daemon that knows everything instead of banish it. Finally set it aside and kill the radical. At this point bring back something from the campaign to fuck with them that they gave into temptation about - the daemon has taken an interest in them, a cultist they let go is burning worlds in their name, whatever.

My GM didn't like it either, hence our recent switch to W&G.
He did do something roundaboutly similar when it came to Lore skills pertaining to xenos. There was a penalty to anything xenos related (Linguistics to understand, Medicae to provide aid, Tech Use to understand their technology, etc.); and that penalty could only be mitigated by actual ranks in the appropriate lore skill.

NTA, it seems to have an absolutely slashed writing team that also seems to be making wild balance changes. They had a space marine book a while ago with psychic powers that were straight upgrades on corebook powers. And then some of them were specifically restricted to their OC chapter. The corebook powers kinda sucked, but they didn't seem to have considered how to update them or how to add stuff in and the whole thing was riddled with errors. They probably just didn't have the time.

We did it because we were walking into a huge crowd of Emperor fanatics. If he wasn't an obvious voidborn mutie, he could have passed as a pilgrim like the others. The cogboy even removed all his mechadendrites.

But then he might have been pinged as a psyker by the mind rapist woman. Either was it was the right choice because him using far sight again got him watching the past events, specifically the ones where the 15yo nodiffed Tsyiak.

>Future becomes past becomes present.
At first he saw an empty and abandoned settlement, now he sees it during the middle of the events 35 years ago. My new schizo theory is that we mind end up time traveled during the eventual fight.

Which would be really fucking cool, but the issue is reporting that later when mission is over.

Man live in tribe, always have work to do, always alert for danger, good lookout, strong hunter.
Man live in cubicle, no work, only numbers, no danger, only walls, shit lookout, weak and frail.
Want to emulate life that made them strong? expensive. costly. requires constant monitoring so you don't lose return on investment. at that point you may as well just go to the places that are already harsh and skim from there, which is what they already do.
And, to build on what >>96144729 said, cloning doesn't work like that. Good cloning is archaeotech, bad cloning gets you horrific mutants. Good fucking luck building up enough rep with the cogboys for them to operate a cloning lab for you, on top of supplying you wargear, maintaining your ships, and handling your geneseed. Over the past few months I have read every major 40k rpg rulebook from cover to cover. I have decided that I prefer Dark Heresy and Imperium Maledictum over Wrath&Glory for various reasons, but the main one would be I prefer minutia, percentile dice, and having rules for everything over the "story comes first" broad strokes approach that W&G takes. I also generally prefer low power things like guardsmen and imperial acolytes over stuff like space marines and eldar. Dark Heresy really clicks with what I personally enjoy about 40k but my impression is that Imperium Maledictum is very much the "spiritual successor" to Dark heresy, since it not only uses the same percentile system, but also has high lethality which I liked about Dark Heresy, and is generally lower power level like Dark Hersey was.

What would be the best way to actually play, now that I know the rules, and which games I'm most interested in? My local store is pretty small and doesn't have much of an rpg scene, so it would likely be online. I have roll20, tabletop simulator, fantasy grounds, and most of the popular online digital roleplaying programs, but I haven't looked into the 40k scene for any of these, I've mostly only played dnd 5e, dnd 3.x, and pathfinder on those.

Not that anon, but apparently CWE being more numerous does appear in some official sources, even if it makes no sense and contradicts other sources

A lot of stuff in codices, magazines, and campaign books is poorly edited filler material written by interns, and even when the more experienced GW writers are involved, they often push their own headcanons and powerwank, which makes making even rough estimates on numbers for non-marine factions impossible

To make a clone in 40k you must split the soul, clones without don't really work well and blanks that survive are comparatively rare. The clone becomes a vessel for that incomplete soul or doesn't have one at all, with all that entails.

This is entirely based on reading between the lines on all the lore of Krieg though, that the reason the Vitae Wombs are so heretical is the same reason the DKoK are atoning, and the same reason for their ultimate secret and never removing the masks. That the process of creating more soldiers is destroying the very essential soul of Jurten one piece at a time and if they do not hurry it up there will be nothing left of him to stand at the Emprah's side.

NTA, just some asshole that digs in rulebooks for lore goodies to use for my own purposes, I have also seen the allusion that there's more craftworlders than deldar, but because they're all isolated it's like comparing the entire world population of Neanderthals at their height to the earliest European homo sapiens in the same area, they lived together and traded between tribes, so if it had ever come right down to it, a war between these groups would favor the unified, however small, over the separated.

Now, I have also heard about the Harlequins having their own huge fuckass space so I can also see deldar getting their own huge fuckass space and I would ultimately assume it was like Necron tesseracts, that that universe city exists but not where it actually matters, if you get to the place where they keep it that is significantly smaller you can destroy it. WHF started to die when they stopped updating it, and then around 8th edition they went "lol let's make it like 40k" and started editing the lore. And when that didn't work and it was nothing but deathstars and people kept playing old editions instead of buying the shit sculpts, they went "okay, let's kill it with this end times campaign" and cheated so their super special oc's would win. And then there's the current shitfight that is TOW vs AOS.

And it's almost like they're starting to do it with warhammer. "Sales are falling! Why? I don't know! Let's make it more like.. uh, warhammer fantasy!". Yes I know squats were already a thing but they didn't quite have the full 'dwarf experience'.

What system? If it's 1e, check out the radical's handbook and the heretek savant for some tech updates. There's a tech-disruptor somewhere in 1e, I believe, that's basically a blank for technology.

That said: Ideally, straight up sorcery and theme it technologically in game. If you must have psyker powers directly, telepathy and call it tapping into the universal datastream, but nothing is really tech-y for psyker powers in most editions.

Living Nightmares: 18 inch range, one unit, roll d6.
1- Opponent moves 2d6" in any direction and is immune to the power for the rest of the game.
2- -1I, -1" move/charge
3- Pass -1LD test or abort any actions they take next turn
4-Spend a full turn not moving, shooting or assaulting they fire one less shot than they should on all attacks, lose +1A for pistol or close combat in assault
5- -1 WS/BS/LD for the next turn.
6- Target falls back, 2d6 hits equal to the unit's average strength.

Blackest Night - 24" range, gives a friendly unit a 5+ cover save or +1 to those with a cover save

Need some ideas for a dark heresy campaign. The players, as acolytes, would need to infiltrate the palace/bunker of a rich noble which made no public appearance in decades and known for collecting sacred religious art from across the sector. After defeating automated defense systems, they find the noble dead. He shot himself while restoring a painting. The art below, which is ancient, and most probably genuine, hints at a terrible, heretical, secret.

This is where I'm looking for inspiration: I was thinking like a proof that big E is posterior to the DAOT, or that it's horus that is sitting on the throne and keeping the emperor at bay. I'm not sure about those ideas.
I would need something that would tempt some of the players to uncover the secret and put themselves where out of curiosity they are seen as 100% heretical while more orthodox one would think of it as a danger. Something that could be true while you can't really exclude the idea that it's ruinous power at work, trying to sow confusion in men's minds.

I started running a Deathwatch game myself, and have in my spare time been creating homebrew for my players. Here's one of the custom Chapters I made to give them an option (they all have shit fellowship, so might as well keep them comfortable). Keep in mind I have used ChatGPT to help make this, as I have found it to be fairly competent, but I still want some good critizism as it should be as balanced as Space Marines can be. And to the point I made above, we have a Flesh Tearers Apothecary, an Iron Hands Techmarine, a Blood Ravens Librarian, and a Blackshield (Black Templars) Assault Marine.

>>96157005
You can throw a red herring at them with the Ateanists which was my first thought with your post. Basically scholars and artists eventually discover the Eris Transform which makes an artwork far closer to perfect and also does warpy stuff, ranging from soul-delivered heroin to localised warp storms to "surprise you're a daemonhost!". Even better, throw it in a wing that's labelled condemned so they think this guy discovered it, realised the threat and threw it off.

The Tower of Babel exists in 40k, and it echoes through time and reality. You could have a series of paintings that, when put together, show the entire thing before it came down. And make it so that under some circumstances it shows a fragment of the Horus Heresy and the 'true' history.

The builder, the man at the very top, the man facing the sky and shaking his fist? Not the Emperor. If the final painting has a secondary vision, have it be Horus on the throne facing off against sky emperor and the tower the battered Imperium. Have something that definitely isn't a daemonhost that manifests to give them screamed warnings and clues when enough of the paintings are together. Something that the causes Imperial statues to bleed and warp when manifest, but leaves humans completely unharmed. Could be a daemon, could be a dead human god, could be a bit of warp trickery, could be the original builder, could just be a single really well informed human soul. Maybe it's something from that time that still exists in the echoes and it's trying to warn them about Big E. Hell, Enuncia's a bit of a weird topic but you could read the Ravenor books to pick up the enemy who does things with sacred architecture and Enuncia.

In-depth careers, at all. Starships and components. Equipment variety.
Say you want to play as eldar corsairs. You don't have a career for that at all, they only made dark eldar. You find some homebrew for it. You don't have a hull for it either, though, nor equipment. You snag one of the NPC ships from Koronus and resign yourself to the knowledge that you'll never be able to customize it. Now it's time to equip your guy. You have one eldar powersword, one set of paired eldar power swords, one razorwire injector, one shuriken weapon per size category, one lasblaster, one fusion rifle, a psychic spear and a force weapon equivalent. You have a plasma grenade and a monofilament grenade. You have one forcefield, and you may be able to dig up some kind of armor, somewhere. Everything else is for dark eldar, good luck with that unless you want to become one.
Contrast with the legions of imperial weapon and equipment choices a Rogue Trader has available. Is it fun for your choices to be constrained to the bare minimum converted from the tabletop?
Essentially, if you want to do this and have fun with it, you're going to make your GM write up half the fucking game all over again, because it wasn't designed for anything outside of playing an actual rogue trader - and playing a rogue trader means you're either human, or you've tricked the universe into thinking you are.

They are, arguably, balls of warp stuff that Big E tricked into thinking they were human. It Depends.
The Marine gains the memories of that specific bioform, and is also horrifically poisoned, because they tend to melt into acid on death.
They have a literal suit of Custodes warplate. Figure it out.
Orks have spores. If you plant a mushroom, it grows. Nids dissolve into acid. This is bad for your soil.
Your average civvie is lucky if they live long enough to learn how humans are made. Why in the flintstone fuck would they be privy to the secrets of biologically engineering superhumans?

Orks are mushrooms and like in the real world, they can absolutely be used as fertilizer if they are sufficiently dead and cleansed of spores beforehand. The spores are hardy, but we're not talking about some sort of super virus here, the orks work primarily on sheer quantity. Anyone remotely familiar with orks is likely familiar with the process, as you want to be cleansing ork spores anyway.

Double check the rules because there are some editing errors here and there like how the horde section forgot that flame got split into flame and spray. Ideally, do not mix humans and marines. Skipping the alignment checkbook balancing can save everybody a headache when it comes to alignment. Chaos is antagonistic and deceitful but not ALL the time.

Hey broskis. I intend on doing a sesh set sometime in M36 before the Dutch cunt got deposed. How shitty was life then? I mean, reading HH gave a pretty shitty picture of M31 Imperium. But never did I see stuff like 18 hour workdays, mandatory random brain scans of schoolchildren for faithfulness, and other nastiness. More like letting the governor do his thing if tithes are paid. At which point did working yourself to death become something that complaining about would be seen as heresy?

>What do the Tau do for entertainment?
Depends on the sept. All T'au are fanatically devoted to the Greater Good (for their race), but it isn't unified at all. Then you have the castes that further divide them.
The earth caste does all the grunt work, but also builds beautiful cities and does all the research. The fire caste is the most likely to spend time doing sports and disciplined samurai hobbies. Water caste is all about people so they have the most parties, I'd assume. Air caste is literally chair force, and they're even more fucked up physically than the Imperium's voidborn.
I don't think they would allow videogames to exist, other than training simulations. It is of no use to the Greater Good. Any media is heavily policed, or it wouldn't be the T'au.
>Why don't the Craft World Eldar go to war and wipe out the Dark Eldar?
Eldar see themselves as the superior race in a galaxy infested by inferiors. They are not enemies most of the time, but the galaxy is a big place and the toy soldiers fight sometimes.

There's a quote somewhere from a space marine that explained it straight. Chapters need to fill in a lot of roles. Some Marines need to excel on specialized weapons or vehicles. Some need to obey orders, others need to command. Some will do thankless tasks, others will kill just for the renown. You don't get that with clone*1000.
>>96144621
I'm pretty sure that the Marines would notice they have different geneseed and that could affect cohesion.
>>96145630
I'm sorry but if you read the rules and never played them, your opinion doesn't count. You'll know what I mean when you experience a campaign.
If you want to run a game, remember that rules isn't a selling point. You either pitch a good adventure, sell the setting, or coerce your friends to play with you.

>Something that could be true while you can't really exclude the idea that it's ruinous power at work, trying to sow confusion in men's minds.
It's easier to call important local history into question than galactic/setting history due to all the meta-knowledge players have about the latter. An example from the FFG Calixis setting would be something that call the nature and loyalty of Saint Drusus into question (maybe something portraying him as a psyker or an ally of Xenos). Something critical to the world/subsector/sector history will be much easier for you to make players as well as characters seriously doubt. Such matters will also be more widely known and more important to the faith and loyalty of local people and also easier for NPCs to question. It's important that the doubts lead to a real need for further investigation by implying some lingering danger, otherwise coverup will be too obvious a solution. The truth doesn't really matter to the Inquisition, after all - just protection of the Imperium.

Looks like it's not really proprietary dice, just their (Cubicle7) way of categorising systems (d20, d6, d100).

When I hear about "prioprietary dice", what comes to my mind are Genesys system, Fudge's +/0/- dice, or Ubiquity's eight-faced dice that are actually 1d2, 2d2 and 3d2.

The call for more investigation would be that his finance and network are still used by what would be suspected to be a ring of heretics, later to be revealed as a front for a radical inquisitor. The paintings are here to seed doubt in player's mind. It's actually a good idea to end this section in a cover up to suggest that there is something to hide.
While I agree with your point on local history rather than global, I created the systems where the campaign takes place, it's isolated by the cicatrix malรฉdiction and I'm afraid that player won't really care if the stakes aren't higher.
