I'll do you one better and do mages by race:
>human - evil vizier type character, though not always evil. Jafar would be a great example.
>elf - druidic sorts. The only elves you'll ever see wearing the skins of predators.
>gnome - stage magician, often complete with tails and bowtie (though never tophats).
>aarakocra - Chan buddhist monk, lots of meditation and practicing the he same rune one thousand times etc.
>golath - Women: kpop idol that performs miracles instead of singing/dancing. Men: bitter hermit outcast.
>waitanga - rustic seers, casting shells to make predictions. Often end up as raimeka (highly respected truth-seekers).
>aasimar - religious fanatic, probably surrounded by a cult following. Turning stones into loafs and whatnot.
>elkore - cliquey geeks that cast for casting's sake and get into long arguments over which runes are objectively better.
>dwarf - gypsy style curses and cures, popularized the concept of the "evil eye".

Is this really your go to for Greeks? Would you do anything else? Not complaining but I’m just curious.

There's all kinds of Greek and Roman mystery cults, Neo-Platonic schizos, pre-Socratic philosophers etc. I just like the idea of mathematicians and scientists being mages.

I can get some of these, like the elves being druids, but what inspired the rest, like goliaths and gnomes? Also, you didn’t say what kind of magic human mages would actually be able to do.

Could have wizards based on native American practices of the various regions. Vision quests to see the future. Totem spirirts. Etc. I am unfortunately not familiar enough with those people to give a very precise suggestion.

Maybe the USA could have mixes based on ancestry? Like maybe an American of Jewish and British descent could make golems out of plant matter and power them with fae deals, etc.?
