1) I think there is some merit to play-by-post, the quality of writing can actually be decently high even though the quality of play is usually around the lower average of a normal game
2) A major pitfall is the low barrier of entry, since it's even lower than voice chat, which is already much lower than in-person. The more free-form the play-by-post is, the more shit it usually is, so you want something where people are actually using a system instead of just writing fanfiction at each other. Watch out for the schizo zoomers and the people who OOC post like they're Sephiroth (but both of those usually stick to the free-form fanfiction shitters)
3) You'll be fine. At worst you will encounter a handful of severely mentally ill zoomers and have to stage a tactical retreat from whatever forum or Discord you're playing in
