All space marines teams should have five operatives
Its the only fluffy way to reflect their in universe strength in comparison with other units in the 40k universe
Five space marines should be more than enough to wipe the floor with 10-14 humans/eldar/orks/votann

GW added a 6th marine to astartes teams in KT21 because one dude beign killed almost always meant losing the game against an equally skilled opponent playing for objectives.

But that was with Custodes in the game. Maybe giving marines more wounds helps to balance it and reward focus firing on careless marines

I hope for option to switch which Cryptek leads new necron team similar to how Hierotek Circle works and option to replace three weaker canoptek warriors with single canoptek wraith or use single canoptek spyder instead of two tomb crawlers. That would be the ideal team for me.

Here's a mega link with the Typhon dossier/token/cards included, hopefully it stays up a bit longer. Please learn how to use capital letters/punctuation and try not to be a rude faggot when asking other people to spoonfeed you.

regular hierotek also has glowing orbs aplenty (hell, a single deathmark has at least 5 glowing orbs on it not counting the head and the small shoulder ones), but also more gauss blasters and more phase blades
here you just have 1 cryptek that's about as difficult to paint as the technomancer/chronomancer and plasmacytes are imo much simpler than guardians or deathmarks
The only thing I dread about them is the geomancer's collar, I just know it's gonna be an absolute pain in the ass to assemble, paint and then transport without it snapping from a light breeze, might just trim it t b h

It is less about the number, painting small orbs is easy, the bigger the orbs the worse they look (at least for me). But you are right about the blades. But with the snapping i see lots of problems not only that, looking at all those weak supports and unsupported spread out legs from the warriors and ...tors.

I played against them in HoR kill team for 7th edition back in the day, and they are
>gigafast flying units
>significantly tougher than terminators (albeit in terms of toughness stat rather than save) even before their living metal or reanimations
>carring gauss weapons that make immortals look like lasguns
Even in HoR a team of pure destroyers made for a 3 man team and that game operated on a scale around twice as big as current kill team including light vehicles
They'd absolutely bust KT's power curve

wreckas success is dependent on how lucky you roll but imo are easier to handle than nemesis claw
nemesis claw are, I think, stronger in general but also harder to play

Mighty kill team veterans: is this an alright amount of terrain?

I'm trying to make a modular board that will look good and still be usable and fair to both players. Do I need more stuff on here? Less? More verticality?

The board is slightly outsized for KT so as to divide it up evenly but the play area will be standard. I've tried to accommodate drop zones so a lot of features are 3 or 6 inches from the edge.

I think it's perhaps a bit too sparse. More heavy terrain could be a good idea.
The real problem though is that what little big terrain pieces there are are concentrated in the corners. Couple that with the availability of vantage points in the drop zones and this is essentially a shooting gallery. It looks like it could be possible to reallocate the terrain so that it has a vetter distribution, but that would limit your options.
You'd probably also want to make sure there are at least two heavy terrain pieces shielding the drop zones (especially when vantage is available easily) to give teams somewhere to hide at the start. That means being able to allocate heavy pieces at a distance of 6" from the short edge or 3" from the long edge, depending on the setup.
Ideally it'd also be best to avoid placing terrain where objective markers should be placed, but that should be fudgeable.
Overall I think this would be quite fine by just adding a large amount of extra heavy terrain. It'd disadvantage shooting teams a bit, but the imbalance would be smaller than allowing ranged teams to dominate entirely.

Thanks anon, I suspected it might be a bit sparse - I'm more familiar with older editions of 40k which had longer sight lines.

The ruins are 3" from one edge and 6" from another and are intended to block LoS to drop zones so may just add another ruin or something to the bottom middle board.

Is it worth removing the walkway on the top right in combination wirh an additional ruin? That'd block most shooting out of that board segment and just leave the bottom left as a mostly open segment.

LoS blocking cover for starting zones and a bit between (the container are a good choice but mabe a bit unevenly placed and the "bombsite" is practically useless and whoever has it on his starting site is at a disadvantage)
No Vantagepoints near the starting zone OR blocking them off so Vision is rather limited to specific lines and not the whole board (especially vantagepoints that have cover are a meanace for some teams)
So in the end, do something about the upper places like make then not movable on or block LoS. block off some more around or in the "bombsite" and maybe turn the two tiles on the right side a it around(or maybe blace them in the midde instead).
(foot note: if you play long table edges the one starting on the lower half has practically NO cover at all)

Troop-type Destroyers don't exist, but probably should – they could make a viable killteam. Everything else in the Destroyer range is too much of a brick and would probably work better as a bossfight than anything else.

New votann team seems almost guaranteed
Maybe some new inquisition/rogue trader team
Since we just got new Admech another team is very unlikely, however it might be possible we'll see a Dark Mechanicum team, considering how pariah nexus turned out
Maybe some new eldar/deldar team but I don't feel like they fit into a tomb world and there's already 5 of them

I've read https://ageofminiatures.com/kill-team-faction/ to get a basic idea of current packaged kill teams and the Compendium's Kill Team operatives, but I guess what I'm really wondering is which of the above should a newnigger get if his main exposure to 40k up till this point has been video games and he is just stepping his toes into tabletop skirmish games?

If you're completely new and coming in from video games, then consider trying out the game using Tabletop Simulator first
That way you can get start to learn the system and get a taste for what its like without dropping a bunch of money and time on models, terrain, painting etc first

As for the factions you mentioned, they do all have teams in the current edition with the exception of grey knights (though as the other anon suggested you could just proxy grey knights models using the angels of death rules for a start). However do be aware that Necrons (Hierotek Circle), Tyranids (Raveners), and CWE (Blades of Khaine) are all more advanced teams that might not be particularly newbie friendly. There is also an eldar Corsair team if thats close enough to craftworlders to satisfy you, and they're pretty well rounded.

Is the Kill Team Compendium a 'different version' or something? I got the impression that you have the Kill Team Core rulebook that establishes the basic rules, and then the Compendium is basically just an aid to use to convert any 40k tabletop figures you have from playing the wargame into Kill Team operatives, which was interchangeable and mutually exclusive with formalized prepackaged kill teams like the Blades of Khaine and Hierotek Circle sets you mentioned. Am I wrong?

The Compendium was released at the start of the previous edition in 2021 as a way to make existing 40k models playable since the game barely had any bespoke teams available at that point.

As of Oct 2024 there is now a new edition in which the compendium has been deprecated in favor of the larger number of bespoke kill teams now available.

Its also worth noting that nearly all of the old compendium teams were pretty underpowered compared to 'proper' bespoke teams that released later as they were essentially released as a stopgap measure.

GW does now host all the team rules on the warcom site for free in this new edition, and you could also check out any of the game assistant sites listed in the OP which will have both the new core rules and team rules.

This, unfortunately GW is retarded and incapable of making half decent decisions most of the time so they got rid of the GK killteam in the new edition, if your group is causal enough it probably isnt too hard to just update and homebrew whatever rules you need to make them function in KT24, but honestly youre probably better off just running KR models as the angels of death killteam, termie with psylincer as heavy intercessor, maybe marines with hammers as the melee intercessors or something, itd be jank but you could make it work somehow

>Release newer, more powerful teams later on, so their now-hooked fanbase feels compelled to buy them
>Release a new version in only a couple of years, but without the cool Compendium that allows you to use your wargame models interchangeably
And let me guess, the Kill Team models aren't even kosher for Combat Patrols or smaller point games? That would be the Jewish cherry on top.

Somehow not being able to use a Compendium to make a relatively fairly matched set of combatants really rubs me the wrong way. I think it's because I was kind of excited about making a "custom" set of operatives. Yeah I get that all you're really doing is picking from a very limited list of options, but I still really liked the idea of it. Especially because I like Grey Knights and there's not much to do with them in the "bespoke" kill teams other than just pretend you've got psychic space marines.

>place tunnel along own table edge
>extend 5" TP1 to a place that gives a lot of access
>store your venomspitter in it
>trick requires either that you have initiative TP2 or that your opponent can't shoot through your light cover concealment where that tunnel marker is
>TP2 starts
>extend tunnel 5" in desired direction
>use strategy ploy to pop your venomspitter out for free, in base contact with the tunnel marker
>activate, charge 9" since the burrow exit action didn't happen during its activation
>with this setup, your melee engagement range from your turn 1 tunnel marker is over 16" (5" tunnel, base size, 9" charge, 1" engagement range) (and you get to move through terrain for the first 5" since that's tunnel)
>this is far enough that you can reach into the enemy drop zone on wide maps, and almost up to it on long maps
>proceed to fight the enemy in melee and kill them
>now have a 3rd action where your venom spitter can turn around and fire its blast weapon on a suitable blob of operatives from your new position inside their drop zone
There are some caveats of course. Not as effective against marines because you don't kill them and can't blast multiple weak targets, and requires initiative or a safe placement. Your opponent can play to avoid it (though that means they start T2 in the far corners of the map so the threat alone would be worth it), or try to use equipment to block your access (although that can backfire by restricting their own access and you can adjust your tunnel to account for non-scouting equipment). Different maps will make it more or less difficult to pull off. Basically, in a lot of cases, it won't work because of circumstance.
WHowever when it DOES work, it lets you sacrifice one model to get probably a 3rd of the enemy team killed or severely damaged, or forces your opponent to start TP2 further back than most teams would usually deploy during setup. Picrel is one possible reach, just to illustrate how far you can go.

People will absolutely hate on me for this, but if you're interested in Craftworld Eldar, then the Blades of Khaine box is fantastic. You can slot in Howling Banshees and Dire Avengers into the team later if you want, but you get extra ability charges if you play them all as a single aspect. All Striking Scorpions is basically a pure assasin team, so all of their abilities recolve around sneaking, hitting and running, and then massive spikes of damage for when it's time to kill someone proper. And with the nerfs to elites, they are potentially one of the stronger teams around currently.

They actually can be killed fairly easily if you leave them in the open, but they can score objective points easily, so they will teach you to play the actual objective based game well.

Anything that they can't assassinate down in one go. Death Guard are probably the easiest counter. Poison does the most damage against BOK because they have the lowest health and even with all of their combos and buffs up, the Elves might not be able to kill a full health deathguard; even with two attacks. Also, just read the fuck out of their aspect rules because that's where the bulk of their strength comes from. Try to make them pop their once per game ignore damage early if you can too.

In short
>Use shields to get into combat and not fight
>Guns pick off targets from there
>Vigilants are garbage
They play to a theme, the theme is clunky but when pulled off feels very nice. They play very well into melee teams, elites are tough to fight against. Tough part is to be aggressive with the shields, while also keeping the shields alive long enough to keep the other specialists out of combat

I just kitbashed a whole knightly squad for my OC donut steel chapter, and now duelist get's nerfed. I expected it to happen, but it still hurts. The main thing that hit hard is more the nerf to the sergeants. It feels like captain is now the auto take option for the most part. Does anyone know any good ways to convert a 32mm base to 40mm and back again? Any sellers for those slip on rings that used to be big for converting 28-32?

It's the right change, the only actually fucked part about Hierotek was the chronomancer. There's a bitchy guy on youtube who constantly complains about them reanimating with the kill op, but frankly if you focus down targets its not hard to kill almost everyone in Hierotek besides the cryptek

They dumpstered the psycho a while back, and the new change to severe is an indirect nerf to the techno
So while they did reign in the chrono, he's still far and away the best option

I have a question about smoke grenades. Reading the rules it looks like they grant obscuring if the shooter or the target is in the area of smoke, but without giving it if the area of smoke they create is between them instead. Is this correct? It doesn't sound very intuitive, but I couldn't manage to find any place in the rules that say the opposite.

Correct. In the new edition, smoke grenades only have an effect if you or the target are wholly within the smoke radius (and not within 2" of each other)

You can both be standing directly opposite the obscuring smoke, 100% of your body’s surface area fully obscured by it and still have perfect accuracy?

>>96167980
Mandrakes are one of the most positionally tricksy teams in the game and are balanced around what a skilled player can get out of all the subtleties of that advantage.
Exaction squad has a really unusual playstyle about stubbornly being in the opponent's face and brutally beating them up instead of killing them with something like plasma.
Additionally, both create their playstyles by making use of rules that change or ignore base game rules, meaning there is a higher chance of both getting rules wrong and getting a weird perception of the game.

If you want suggestions for what to use instead, check the summary image in the OP. I've been away for a bit so I haven't added the last 4 teams but for all the rest there is a rating for how beginner-friendly they are.

played 2 games yesterday with some other friends who are also new to KT. used my legionaries vs kommandos and then pathfinders on Octarius. we played with reroll as the only strategem and skipped equipment + scouting.
I absolutely stomped them. granted, I was rolling hot and they were not, but was I just playing an easier, better team? were there rules we were likely playing wrong?

Definitely a combination of all of the above. Legionaries and kommandos are both beginner-friendly teams, pathfinders a bit less so. Even then, astartes teams are going to generally be more forgiving than teams with 10+ models.
Legionaries only use their ploys to enhance things they could already do, while kommandos need it for start of turn moves and just a scratch (a ploy that can singlehandedly turn any melee situation against them from a guaranteed win to a guaranteed loss).
Kommandos and pathfinders also both have equipment that act to broaden their teams' capabilities (kommandos can do some nasty harpoon shenanigans while pathfinders get to absolutely shit out extra markerlight tokens with them) while for legionaries it again just enhances what's already there a bit statistically.
Matchup isn't bad either.
If you, on top of all of that, also rolled better, you'd have to really mess up to not win hard.

Kommandos and maybe like Angels of Death, Plague Marines, or Scout Squad. Those are all teams that aren't too hard to wrap your head around. FWIW I started with Hierotek and it was confusing but still fun. I would go to the free rules on GW's site and just look at some teams that interest you, if you're really into it you can learn any team if you just focus on them
