All space marines teams should have five operatives
Its the only fluffy way to reflect their in universe strength in comparison with other units in the 40k universe
Five space marines should be more than enough to wipe the floor with 10-14 humans/eldar/orks/votann

GW added a 6th marine to astartes teams in KT21 because one dude beign killed almost always meant losing the game against an equally skilled opponent playing for objectives.
But that was with Custodes in the game. Maybe giving marines more wounds helps to balance it and reward focus firing on careless marines

I hope for option to switch which Cryptek leads new necron team similar to how Hierotek Circle works and option to replace three weaker canoptek warriors with single canoptek wraith or use single canoptek spyder instead of two tomb crawlers. That would be the ideal team for me.

regular hierotek also has glowing orbs aplenty (hell, a single deathmark has at least 5 glowing orbs on it not counting the head and the small shoulder ones), but also more gauss blasters and more phase blades
here you just have 1 cryptek that's about as difficult to paint as the technomancer/chronomancer and plasmacytes are imo much simpler than guardians or deathmarks
The only thing I dread about them is the geomancer's collar, I just know it's gonna be an absolute pain in the ass to assemble, paint and then transport without it snapping from a light breeze, might just trim it t b h

I played against them in HoR kill team for 7th edition back in the day, and they are
>gigafast flying units
>significantly tougher than terminators (albeit in terms of toughness stat rather than save) even before their living metal or reanimations
>carring gauss weapons that make immortals look like lasguns
Even in HoR a team of pure destroyers made for a 3 man team and that game operated on a scale around twice as big as current kill team including light vehicles
They'd absolutely bust KT's power curve

Mighty kill team veterans: is this an alright amount of terrain?
I'm trying to make a modular board that will look good and still be usable and fair to both players. Do I need more stuff on here? Less? More verticality?
The board is slightly outsized for KT so as to divide it up evenly but the play area will be standard. I've tried to accommodate drop zones so a lot of features are 3 or 6 inches from the edge.

I think it's perhaps a bit too sparse. More heavy terrain could be a good idea.
The real problem though is that what little big terrain pieces there are are concentrated in the corners. Couple that with the availability of vantage points in the drop zones and this is essentially a shooting gallery. It looks like it could be possible to reallocate the terrain so that it has a vetter distribution, but that would limit your options.
You'd probably also want to make sure there are at least two heavy terrain pieces shielding the drop zones (especially when vantage is available easily) to give teams somewhere to hide at the start. That means being able to allocate heavy pieces at a distance of 6" from the short edge or 3" from the long edge, depending on the setup.
Ideally it'd also be best to avoid placing terrain where objective markers should be placed, but that should be fudgeable.
Overall I think this would be quite fine by just adding a large amount of extra heavy terrain. It'd disadvantage shooting teams a bit, but the imbalance would be smaller than allowing ranged teams to dominate entirely.

Thanks anon, I suspected it might be a bit sparse - I'm more familiar with older editions of 40k which had longer sight lines.
The ruins are 3" from one edge and 6" from another and are intended to block LoS to drop zones so may just add another ruin or something to the bottom middle board.
Is it worth removing the walkway on the top right in combination wirh an additional ruin? That'd block most shooting out of that board segment and just leave the bottom left as a mostly open segment.

Similar to what the other anon said. Usually most important rules to follow.
LoS blocking cover for starting zones and a bit between (the container are a good choice but mabe a bit unevenly placed and the "bombsite" is practically useless and whoever has it on his starting site is at a disadvantage)
No Vantagepoints near the starting zone OR blocking them off so Vision is rather limited to specific lines and not the whole board (especially vantagepoints that have cover are a meanace for some teams)
So in the end, do something about the upper places like make then not movable on or block LoS. block off some more around or in the "bombsite" and maybe turn the two tiles on the right side a it around(or maybe blace them in the midde instead).
(foot note: if you play long table edges the one starting on the lower half has practically NO cover at all)

Hey, that was the first 40k model I every put together. Take that back; they're beautiful and in the 2000s they were an impressive miniature. Desiring an update is one thing, but these are not embarrassing in the slight.

I've read

If you're completely new and coming in from video games, then consider trying out the game using Tabletop Simulator first
That way you can get start to learn the system and get a taste for what its like without dropping a bunch of money and time on models, terrain, painting etc first
As for the factions you mentioned, they do all have teams in the current edition with the exception of grey knights (though as the other anon suggested you could just proxy grey knights models using the angels of death rules for a start). However do be aware that Necrons (Hierotek Circle), Tyranids (Raveners), and CWE (Blades of Khaine) are all more advanced teams that might not be particularly newbie friendly. There is also an eldar Corsair team if thats close enough to craftworlders to satisfy you, and they're pretty well rounded.

Is the Kill Team Compendium a 'different version' or something? I got the impression that you have the Kill Team Core rulebook that establishes the basic rules, and then the Compendium is basically just an aid to use to convert any 40k tabletop figures you have from playing the wargame into Kill Team operatives, which was interchangeable and mutually exclusive with formalized prepackaged kill teams like the Blades of Khaine and Hierotek Circle sets you mentioned. Am I wrong?

The Compendium was released at the start of the previous edition in 2021 as a way to make existing 40k models playable since the game barely had any bespoke teams available at that point.
As of Oct 2024 there is now a new edition in which the compendium has been deprecated in favor of the larger number of bespoke kill teams now available.
Its also worth noting that nearly all of the old compendium teams were pretty underpowered compared to 'proper' bespoke teams that released later as they were essentially released as a stopgap measure.
GW does now host all the team rules on the warcom site for free in this new edition, and you could also check out any of the game assistant sites listed in the OP which will have both the new core rules and team rules.

This, unfortunately GW is retarded and incapable of making half decent decisions most of the time so they got rid of the GK killteam in the new edition, if your group is causal enough it probably isnt too hard to just update and homebrew whatever rules you need to make them function in KT24, but honestly youre probably better off just running KR models as the angels of death killteam, termie with psylincer as heavy intercessor, maybe marines with hammers as the melee intercessors or something, itd be jank but you could make it work somehow

And let me guess, the Kill Team models aren't even kosher for Combat Patrols or smaller point games? That would be the Jewish cherry on top.

Somehow not being able to use a Compendium to make a relatively fairly matched set of combatants really rubs me the wrong way. I think it's because I was kind of excited about making a "custom" set of operatives. Yeah I get that all you're really doing is picking from a very limited list of options, but I still really liked the idea of it. Especially because I like Grey Knights and there's not much to do with them in the "bespoke" kill teams other than just pretend you've got psychic space marines.

>extend 5" TP1 to a place that gives a lot of access
>store your venomspitter in it
>trick requires either that you have initiative TP2 or that your opponent can't shoot through your light cover concealment where that tunnel marker is
>TP2 starts
>extend tunnel 5" in desired direction
>use strategy ploy to pop your venomspitter out for free, in base contact with the tunnel marker
>activate, charge 9" since the burrow exit action didn't happen during its activation
>with this setup, your melee engagement range from your turn 1 tunnel marker is over 16" (5" tunnel, base size, 9" charge, 1" engagement range) (and you get to move through terrain for the first 5" since that's tunnel)
>this is far enough that you can reach into the enemy drop zone on wide maps, and almost up to it on long maps
>proceed to fight the enemy in melee and kill them
>now have a 3rd action where your venom spitter can turn around and fire its blast weapon on a suitable blob of operatives from your new position inside their drop zone
There are some caveats of course. Not as effective against marines because you don't kill them and can't blast multiple weak targets, and requires initiative or a safe placement. Your opponent can play to avoid it (though that means they start T2 in the far corners of the map so the threat alone would be worth it), or try to use equipment to block your access (although that can backfire by restricting their own access and you can adjust your tunnel to account for non-scouting equipment). Different maps will make it more or less difficult to pull off. Basically, in a lot of cases, it won't work because of circumstance.
WHowever when it DOES work, it lets you sacrifice one model to get probably a 3rd of the enemy team killed or severely damaged, or forces your opponent to start TP2 further back than most teams would usually deploy during setup. Picrel is one possible reach, just to illustrate how far you can go.

People will absolutely hate on me for this, but if you're interested in Craftworld Eldar, then the Blades of Khaine box is fantastic. You can slot in Howling Banshees and Dire Avengers into the team later if you want, but you get extra ability charges if you play them all as a single aspect. All Striking Scorpions is basically a pure assasin team, so all of their abilities recolve around sneaking, hitting and running, and then massive spikes of damage for when it's time to kill someone proper. And with the nerfs to elites, they are potentially one of the stronger teams around currently.
They actually can be killed fairly easily if you leave them in the open, but they can score objective points easily, so they will teach you to play the actual objective based game well.

Anything that they can't assassinate down in one go. Death Guard are probably the easiest counter. Poison does the most damage against BOK because they have the lowest health and even with all of their combos and buffs up, the Elves might not be able to kill a full health deathguard; even with two attacks. Also, just read the fuck out of their aspect rules because that's where the bulk of their strength comes from. Try to make them pop their once per game ignore damage early if you can too.

Mandrakes are one of the most positionally tricksy teams in the game and are balanced around what a skilled player can get out of all the subtleties of that advantage.
Exaction squad has a really unusual playstyle about stubbornly being in the opponent's face and brutally beating them up instead of killing them with something like plasma.
Additionally, both create their playstyles by making use of rules that change or ignore base game rules, meaning there is a higher chance of both getting rules wrong and getting a weird perception of the game.
If you want suggestions for what to use instead, check the summary image in the OP. I've been away for a bit so I haven't added the last 4 teams but for all the rest there is a rating for how beginner-friendly they are.

I absolutely stomped them. granted, I was rolling hot and they were not, but was I just playing an easier, better team? were there rules we were likely playing wrong?

Definitely a combination of all of the above. Legionaries and kommandos are both beginner-friendly teams, pathfinders a bit less so. Even then, astartes teams are going to generally be more forgiving than teams with 10+ models.
Legionaries only use their ploys to enhance things they could already do, while kommandos need it for start of turn moves and just a scratch (a ploy that can singlehandedly turn any melee situation against them from a guaranteed win to a guaranteed loss).
Kommandos and pathfinders also both have equipment that act to broaden their teams' capabilities (kommandos can do some nasty harpoon shenanigans while pathfinders get to absolutely shit out extra markerlight tokens with them) while for legionaries it again just enhances what's already there a bit statistically.
Matchup isn't bad either.
If you, on top of all of that, also rolled better, you'd have to really mess up to not win hard.

So, I have a few questions about Tomb World.
I always wanted to buy some 40k shit, but never did because I don't see myself building a whole army (I don't like the idea of being locked to one army until making a new one which will cost a lot of money, take a lot of time to paint and space to store), I saw Kill Team and immediately thought it was the perfect format for me to enjoy this universe.
Since then, I was basically waiting for the right box to start and this is it.
Questions:
1) You think it will be similar to the Hivestorm box? 2 Kill Teams+Board+Terrain+Rulebook, basically everything to start the game or I will need to buy the fucking $40 rulebook (lmao)?
2) How much do you think it will cost if it's the case?
3) When GW announce this kind of box, how much time can we expect until the release?
4) I see Necron warriors on these pics, you think they are used as NPCs for the solo/coop?
Getting into KT with a friend, how WYSIWYG is your locals? When I've played 40k in the past, it was pretty loose with having a flamer be a plasma gun and the like. But with KT being much smaller squad sizes, are people more anal about that?

The rule we use and I have seen used are always the same. As long as it's reasonable and not confusing nobody is going to say anything. This means that the models should at least be distinguishable and give some idea of what they are. A plasma gun being a melta is perfectly reasonable. Two guys with a plasma gun of which one has actually a plasma and one has a melta it's less so. Five identical guys with lasguns of which three have lasguns, one a plasma and one a melta is not.

While I'm happy we're getting a more classic SM KT with Deathwatch (I don't like phobos and I'm not interested in scouts), I'm sad about the Mk. 8 and Artifex boltgun erasure with the new DW. Thankfully, I've been sitting on a spare of the previous kit for some time.
I think I'll get the new kit, round up some additional mk. x bodies from the shooty and stabby intercessor kits & hellblasters, and spread any leftover 2015 DW arms/weapons among them to add a bit more of the previous kit's flair. I especially want to give the old frag cannon and h. bolter/flamer to an appropriately posed tacticus body; I don't like Gravis or Phobos and will not include them. I'll happily reduce the heavy gunner's wound count by one rather than use gravis models.
I'm very much considering making some custom unit cards/rules so I can have DW with shotguns when playing with friends, or give my KT leader a combi weapon.

reading the Aquilons Drop insertion rule:
>As a STRATEGIC GAMBIT in the first and second turning point, you can move your Drop markers up to 4" horizontally
>Less than half of your operatives can be set up above by the end of the first turning point. In other words, by the end of the first turning point, more than half of your operatives must have been set up in the killzone during the battle.
>When readying your operatives during the second and third turning points, remove one of your Drop markers. This means operatives still set up above are incapacitated at the end of the second turning point.
The fuck? Is there really ever a use case where it's preferrable to straight up lose your dude(s) just to move a single remaining drop marker a bit closer to the center of the killzone?

The operatives being incapacitated is just to make sure the game doesn't break if you leave them up there. It's not something that's ever worth it because you literally just lose them. Just means you can't leave them up there to deny your opponent kill op points.

Question, from someone who's just getting back into the hobby this year, after 11 years out of it.
What's the go with box sets like
>>96177841 ?
Like I can't find the Blood and Zeal set available/in stock anywhere, but I can find the KTs from it in their own individual boxes, so I assume these type of '2 KTs and terrain' boxes are a limited time thing, right?
Necrons are one of the armies/factions/whatevers that I'm thinking about possibly collecting and the terrain in this set looks nice. What are the chances that they will release it separately later as a 'Killzone'? Or have they announced that they will? They didn't release the SoB statue in Blood and Zeal, but I know that was from a previous 40k terrain set, so I guess that may be why. But I've seen other box sets that use what appear to be the 'Gallowdark' terrain, which is still available online. But then also, I've seen Ork KT terrain around different sites, but can't find it on GWs store.
So if I skip over this, what are the chances I'll still be able to pick up the terrain/walls later, without having to pay some sort of scalpers mark up?

Ladders are a common pickup for me. Utility grenades too. Explosive nades are usually not a good fit for the teams I play (since a lot of them lose more on the accuracy decrease than they gain on the extra damage). Heavy barricade when I can get any real use for it because I like my tic tac toe paintjob on it.
I rarely find razorwire or mines worth it, they tend to limit yourself more than the enemy. I don't think any of my teams even benefit from the radio.

just how the dice rolls come out sometimes. I was playing one game where I was playing Death Guard against my buddies Angels of Death
He charged my bombardier (with fists for melee) with an assault trooper (with a chainsword.) Both of us were unwounded.
Over a series of really hilarious bad dice rolls in a couple rounds of melee, combat saw my marine with fists killing his marine with a chainsword. Just happens sometimes.

Alleged leak. Don't take this as most definitely true, but it it does look real.
If it is, then next box after the deathwatch/necrons box will be some sort of super celestians vs night lords raptors (it'd be really funny if this was true because then there would be 3 very applicable ways of playing specifically night lords as a subfaction of CSM, while daemon players cry in a corner)

It's impossible that 5 sisters of battle will fight against 5 space marines.
So we'll get either more than 5 sisters in that box or we will be allowed to add other sisters moders to the team, like ratlings or GSC are allowed to.
And that's greate! Sisters have so many cool models. Even normal average bss is brilliant.
>>96211625
You are wrong. Gameplay for elite teams is much more entertaining, than for horde teams. Elites vs elites battles are much faster. Marines are the best material for kitbashing and making your dudes. And finally, most people already have some kind of marines.
So the more marines in this game - the better it becomes. I remember with horror periods in history of Kill Team when we didn't have any elite teams for 3 releases in a row.

moroch, chalnath, octarius, gallowdark, bheta decima and volkus are (or used to be in case of the former 3) available for purchase separately of the boxed sets they were introduced in

Last time we got a jump pack operative in a team was in ItD too, with the salvagers. That season also saw arbites and deldar fighting over escaped prisoners in a space hulk which thematically is stretchy as hell. Their team pair releases don't seem to be particularly tuned to make perfect sense with the killzones, more likely they have terrain to sell and models to sell and just put them together.
So I wouldn't put it past them to place raptors in a tomb world box.

Starting a Legionary (Emperors Children) Kill Team as my first KT and I only got one question. Out of the units available, which would be the "cool" option to put in terminator armor? I know I can't run terminators like in 1st ed, but I still want terminator armor on the table simply because I really like terminator armor. Initially I was thinking either my leader (Chosen/Champion) or putting the icon bearer in terminator armor, but I figured I would just ask "If you had to choose a model to slap into terminator armor for the legionaries, what would you choose?". Now that I type this out, whatever unit I give warded armor to can just be the terminator, so it all works out one way or another.

Kasarkin is 10, you're thinking of Krieg.

Cool as a basic shooty 10 man team, they feel very cool to use.
The only issue is they also are bottom of the barrel tier, just sort of lacking the tools and power needed to win against competent opponents playing anything that is considered well-balanced against the rest of the team list.

A shame they're low ranking and a bit meat grindy, but I like the looks of the models at least.

I was looking at AoD as well since I kinda figured I could run whatever power armor team I want and just use EC models. But wouldn't that also work for the legionary heavy gunner be able to do the same thing with their own heavy bolter or chaincannon?

termies are 40mm base while legionaries are 32mm, dunno how much of a difference it makes

True, though nothing a little cork/tactical rock can't fix. Besides the guys at my local store are all pretty chill, so I don't think they will mind a little overhang on the base of 1 or 2cm
