>The player characters meet a high-caste nobleman
>It is considered good manners to bow to him, or at least nod to him in acknowledgement of his station while in his own home
>The entire party decides to bow or nod to him in acknowledgement
>The party barbarian loudly announces that he bows to no man!
>A few minutes later, the barbarian is asking the nobleman for help or assistance regarding whatever matter they came to him for
How do you handle this? How would the other NPCs around be reacting to this?
I have a player that seems to brazenly throw all normal social function aside and exalts his character "Above" social norms. For example, when traveling through a town they don't know, they were going around asking for information. When peasants ignored them, he said that he would grab them and demand they answer, yet got upset when they would take up arms to defend themselves.
Also, he does shit like runs into a duke's castle and demands the guard there help with personal conflicts. "OR THEY WILL BE MADE TO DO SO!" When asked how he would make them, he claims that he would go to the capital city and tell the king that he wouldn't help.

tl;dr I have a socially awkward retard whose antics give me narrative dissonance when I run for him. Short of kicking the guy out, (Because I otherwise like playing with him,) and other than talking to him about it (Let's assume that I have/am going to, but it won't/hasn't worked.) What are some in-game ways I can deal with this?

Talk to the player. You can't solve this problem in game, and you shouldn't try.

No you haven't, or you'd say what actually happened when you did so.

It doesn't really matter, the thread is about addressing it IN-GAME. (Stay on topic.)

(In all honesty, I'm going to approach him and talk to about it today before our game. But I was trying to gather my thoughts on it first, because honestly I don't even know what to think about it. I can't really do it justice, just how entitled he comes across when he does this shit.)

Just play out the appropriate NPC reactions. Decide on some culture that they follow and let what happens happen. Obviously tell your players what the culture is like so they don't pick fights unintentionally. Knowing what the world is like is going to help roleplay in general.
There doesn't always have to be an immediate negative reaction but NPCs that don't like the PCs could want to avoid or harm them in the future.

Very simple.
Assuming the nobleman would have helped in the first place, you just increase the "cost" (usually figurative, maybe literal) or reduce the assistance they get for what they're "paying."
So if the party are slaying some monster the noble wants slain and want his help, then the noble will either say "sure, here's a map, but you can't have my magic sword because fuck you too" or "yeah, I'll give you more help, but now I want the monster's golden eggs brought back as well."
A reasonable noble (I'm assuming he's not a little Nero type) isn't going to fly off the handle over shit like that, but actual goodwill evaporates like snow in the sun when you're rude to people.

Talking it out OOC is obviously the guaranteed solution, but in terms of in-character NPC reactions, it will likely vary but overall just be realistic. And by realistic, I mean like how a normal human being would react to a blustering arrogant prick in public. Like his reputation for manhandling people begins to precede him and peasants begin actively avoiding the party when he's there, the number of guards quietly increase in town, and nobility just quietly ignore him when the party shows up until he opens his mouth and begins saying shit like "I bow to no man!" at which point he gets quietly asked if he would rather wait in the other room if he feels he's "above" these kind of social conventions.

Like, just from your hypothetical situation, it sounds like the rest of the party is fine and that it's his character's attitude that is the issue, so just make it clear that his attitude is having a negative and that either he and/or the party needs to get it under control if they expect people to be friendly. You don't have to have him smote from above for his arrogance, or have an entire company of full-plated knights sentence him to death. Just notch down future encounters from friendly to neutral attitude and neutral to "neutral but on-guard". And if the barbarian starts complaining OOC about it, that's when sending an ultimatum to him and the rest of his party that npcs will keep being on if he refuses to show humility and that it's up to them to decide how they want to handle it.

If the issue is that the player's behavior causes you narrative dissonance, attempting to employ narrative means to correct his behavior is unlikely to succeed.

That's interesting, it could be some fun debating between someone that sounds retarded but actually has solid logic and someone stuck in their own tradition. A noble could become fascinated by this and start pestering them about details of their society as much as demand their head, a big range of events from a character like that. Sounds like something that could stay for a long campaign or a series of adventures and get a lot from the world.

That's not what OP said tho.

Conan debates with people and makes existencial arguments, he serves rulers and chains of command depending on his age and what's going on with his life.
He doesn't demand help from people he disrespected, he knows respect is earned and he regularly does so.

I think this is solid. Do remember to explain cultural stuff the characters would know before showing them the consequences because players won't know what you decided. It's fine if a character wants to bang his head against the world until someone chops it off, but make sure they are doing that intentionally. Not that
>are you suuuuuure?
bullshit, explain consequences properly and ask for clarification before big punishments.

>How do you handle this? How would the other NPCs around be reacting to this?
Force the barbarian to bow if he seeks aid. It could be a fun character moment where he learns humility and civility so long as the player isn't a fuckass.

I had a similar event happen to one of my PCs in a cyberpunk game. My brash, arrogant street thug was trying to cut a deal with some people way above her weight class and realized just how much of a small fry she really was. Went from thinking she was a valued business partner with some influence to throw around to realizing she was just a mere deniable asset whose only value was giving the syndicate she was working with a foothold in the more lawless regions of the city. Went from strutting cocky through their building to being humbled once she realized she was just a medium fish in a small pond that had stumbked into a shark tank.

It was a fun little character moment that made her both more ambitious to prove them wrong and more cautious because she reized just how easily all her plans can be casually crushed should she prove too much of an annoyance to any of the power players.

the samurai are really wierd, historically. like all their quintessential samurai-ness is pretty nuch a larp. like imagin IF ALL WE KNEW populistically, about say, knights, was actually from the era of the 200 years guns armour bows overlapped.

that's the shit we know about samurai. all the swordfighting and stuff, was AFTER samurai became pike and shot style armies of spearmen and bowmen and horse archers, with the sowrd becoming so ornamental sword schools and such started to try and revive it, to make it a noble symbol again, instead of a vestige. meanwhile, all the actual samurai who were fighting, were giant gunfags who worshipped the cult of arquebus. matchlocks, they traded for. and they instantly became pike and shot hard core. the samurai fighting was not 'YOOOOOOOOOOIIIIIIII honorabu duuull' but increasingly bloody, devestating, mass casualty shot blasting side by side.

Any help handed out to the party specifically excludes the barbarian, if that is reasonable.

If that isn't reasonable, the barbarian needs to make a detailed, formal apology for atrocious behavior to his betters. Else, they don't get help from the nobleman. They could attempt to disassociate from the barbarian and his actions, but should face significantly worse attitudes from the nobleman if he or his underlings ever find out that they're still working together.

In a general case, characters behaving badly gets them socially ostracized from the local community. Violent behavior gets them outlawed. A sufficient apology to the aggrieved parties, with some compensation, might be enough to get him back in their good books. Failing that, he should need to be out of the room or disguised for the party to make dealings with others while he's with them.

depends on the character of the nobleman and the culture.

is the noble a stalwart warrior and full of pride? maybe he even respects the barbarian more.

Is he more on the arrogant side, well why should he acknoledge the request of a person that clearly did not acklowledge him.

This of course depends also on what the noble needs. If he needs tha party he may overlook stuff like this. If the Party needs him and their problems do not coincide with him/his problems, then he maybe has less good will now to provide assitance.

Assuming you're incapable of just talking to the player, this is the answer. Enforce consequences that affect the whole party and the party will take care of the problem player themselves. "Hey steve I know you're a barbarian and all, but you got our reward halved last time so either bow or wait outside dude"
You don't even have to be honest with it. Just tell the players out of character that the king was gonna give them a bigger reward but the barbarian fucked it up. They'll gag the barbarian for you

What kind of a joyless cunt are you? My players absolutely love that kind of thing. We had one session in which a foreign city they were in was performing an opera set in the region the party was originally from and the group spent half an hour out-of-character workshopping what parts of their native culture these foreigners should have misunderstood, exaggerated, fetishized, and completely missed the point of.
