I was just wondering how every modern or cyberpunk setting deals with the ubiquity of increasingly powerful handphones.

what's the issue?
don't really need to detail the 10 terabytes of random images some guy has saved to his iphone 69, same way you don't need to detail all 20 million books in the church's giga library in your fantasy game

Shadowrun rolled with it for 4e, and then kind of rolled it back in 5e.

Okay, so what?
There's no problem here that systems would have to deal with.
You going to google who the murder culprit is?
Are you asking ChatGPT to raid the gangs hideout?
Is Wikihow telling you how to infiltrate a corporation?

People already have cybernetic implants. Handphones are not needed.

Honestly I'd be more curious how you'd handle something like digital telepathy from GitS if that was your average method of communicating with people although if I'm remembering the show and movie correctly, they still used phones and digital telepathy was only used for communicating between each other.

It worked pretty well in 4e desu. People just hated trying to inject 2000s into muh 80s.

Section 9 were communicating over a heavily encrypted network, but there still times they had to go into "autistic mode" due to threat of hacking or somebody detecting them. I doubt it was immune to interference or EW, but I can't remember specific examples where they were jammed by an enemy.

I think the facility where the Laughing Man originated from in SAC blocked their coms too. That's why Togusa was basically on his own. So clearly there are plausible ways to punish players being too reliant on that sort of thing.

Everyone in Tokyo NOVA by default has an IANUS: an integrated cybernetic system that includes digital comms and augmented reality projections. You have to specifically select being a "wet" at chargen to lack having a smartphone+ integrated into your body.

I feel like you're trying to find things to complain about, seeing as most cyberpunk more or less predicted cell phone analogues and had easy long distance communication for forever.

Kind of the opposite but I remember the episode where Togusa was on trial and the major was trying to clue him in that their encrypted comms still worked in the court room so that's impressive, I'd imagine secret comms would make the Japanese kangaroo court going after section 9 piss themselves with rage.

Legit one of the coolest scenes in the film too, because it showed that even he could be hacked. That whole section is a mindtrip.
