the lore to this game is absolutely shit and all the books are F to D-

the only reason it has any traction is because it attracts people who like robots but aren't big into Gundam / Armored Core style zippy zoopy mechs.

not a single person got into this game by reading one of the books

No, it was carried early on by individual character stories, and those are harder to do in settings with proper industrialized wars. Characters like Nasty K and the Kells, and the possibility that your small team of dudes with their detailed record sheets could also be characters with a real impact even (or especially) if they're just mercenaries are what made the game popular. The gameplay focusing on small numbers of heavily detailed units helped this idea out a lot.

BT mechs do not have to turn on their feet to change jump direction. You can jump in any direction and arbitrarily choose which way you're facing when you land at no cost. It's the only real benefit of things like the Urbanmech or Shadow Hawk having such short jump ranges. They can start moving in reverse by simply jumping backwards and spinning in the air.

No conventional mech uses that, quadvees cannot use their tracks in any capacity in mech configuration.
>they can certainly manage some mid-air maneuvering
No, a mech can at most strafe slightly in the direction it initially jumped, but it has to land and turn around on the ground to jump in an opposing direction.
If you want any more than that you need a LAM.

The fact that you can't accept lots of anime and anime inspired video games depict much higher end machines than that is a sign of terminal Vs debate brainrot, where you conflate how much you like the setting with how powerful it is.

Or you just have it jump one hex forward. You're not calculating your movement as you go, you pick a target hex and then you either walk to it along any arbitrary path you have MP for, run to it along any arbitrary path you have MP for, or jump to it in the shortest straight line possible. You changed your target hex and jumped less than you initially had decided to do. There is no scenario where you need to jump forward and backward in the same turn. You have perfect control of the unit and simply target a closer hex to move to.

Irrelevant. That you cannot do that means the mech can only make one jump in one rough direction per turn.
Mechs cannot radically change the direction they're moving during a jump except to come to a stop, it has to land first to make a jump in an opposing direction during the next ten second window that represents a turn.

The point being a battlemech will begin and end a jump moving in the same direction in a 10 second window, it takes a significant amount of time to jump in another direction.
It's not juking in opposing directions, sometimes multiple times per second, like late armored cores do.

Ten seconds is a longer time than you'd think when people are shooting at you. It's simply that battlemechs are inherently difficult targets due to various factors and the evasion of the jump is just that it's hard to hit an object moving in a parabolic trajectory.
But again, the point was battlemechs aren't zipping around like armored cores or gundams in flight.
Neither mechwarrior nor armored core are accurate or similar depictions to how battlemechs move in battletech, it's a middle ground of some sort. And though the skill of pilot shifts that depiction heavily in one direction or the other, there are hard limits.

It's still easier to hit a mech in the air unless it's only poptarting, even ignoring mechwarriors contentious pinpoint aiming. Any dingus can see a 10 meter robot begin leaping into the air and go "hmmm I wonder where he's going to be for the next five seconds?". It's not even a neutral action, it's supposed to be very hard to hit them in the air.

Actually feel like it doesn't get discussed how it's pretty hard to hit mechs in general. They can't be that slow if it's generally unreliable to even get lasers or guided weapons to connect.

A competently trained (4) gunner has a +4 from long range and -4 for immobile target. So they hit on a 4 on a 2d6 roll.
So actually, that's the baseline amount of movement a mech has in combat. A mech that simply chooses to stay in its hex is a +0 modifier to hit but a mech that is actually shut down or without a pilot is -4. They generate 4 entire points of defense just from being active enough to juke in place.

Changing the subject: given that the MechWarrior games are so much more successful than TT BT, should CGL be trying to gather them by making rules for single-Mech scenarios? Solaris fights, Clan Trials, etc.

I guess the problem is if you start doing PvE, you need a game master (or moderately competent but simple rules for enemy Mechs'"AI"?)

They showed off a new box at gencon that's all about PVE, there's a card system to decide opponent actions. Only for alpha strike so far but they said they wanted to do something similar for classic.

I'm skeptical that a hypothetical mechwarrior enthusiast who can't make the leap from solo supermechs to more even lance v lance will get over the hurdle of video games to tabletop play at all.

So /btg/ I've been working on a sourcebook for my own mercenary force and I'm in kind of a weird dilemma. The TL;DR is that the mercenary force is also a satanic cult and they need a patron demon to worship (obviously this is mostly a means of ensuring unit cohesion and control by leadership, but I'm a fan of the black marauder so there's gonna be some spooky ambiguity). I'm of two minds:

>Use an actual demon from the ars goetia or other occult background for maximum spooky

>Be a little tongue-in-cheek and make it so over the thousand-plus years old RPG sourcebooks have been mistaken for occult texts and have them worship a demon or devil from another RPG

Which do you think is more tonally appropriate for battletech? I feel like I could go either way on this.

Do both. Pick a "real" demon and then make it clear through description that the cult leader got most of his information from a fragment of a Highschool DxD fan wiki or similar. That's basically what the lesser key of solomon was anyway.

The meta-spook is that might not matter, for the devil wears many guises...

They could worship Bael, specifically the interpretation with a spider or crab-like body. Everyone thinks they're just a bunch of kooks, until they start performing unholy miracles like raising the dead or warping their mechs into technorgsnic monstrosities. Is it really demonic magic, or some kind of lostech nanomachines (son)? Or perhaps something even stranger like the wreckage of a mysterious mech that appeared after a jump accident. I dont think the Tag has enough range to safely use one with an arrow do they?
And the long-toms are just good for any proper army deployment.
Still, in theory it would be a solid combat doctrine to focus on the fighters and arty, using your other forces primarily to as defensive or AA. I imagine, lots of riflemen, LRM carriers liek vehicles and archers, and some heavier mech to hold a line.

Even if you're not expecting your assault mech to be an assault mech, is an undergunned medium that can't jump and can really only do damage with punches and kicks a good investment to you?

No depiction of tracks on mechs(of which there are three I know of, aside from quadvees) show them being part of the foot, they're shown as part of the lower leg, which the mech must kneel to use instead of being able to switch between instantly.

This is only partially correct, the buster has tracks mounted within the feet apparently.
Though tracks do take an entire movement phase of doing nothing to switch to or off of and they don't really do much except lowering your overall mobility while making it so you don't slip on roads(this doesn't even make sense, heavy tracked vehicles slip on roads pretty easily).
It's not skating around like is stereotypical with some mechs using such locomotion.

I'm guessing the extra stability comes from having two feet on the ground and having your neuro helm and gyro give your mech a level of stability a conventional tracked vehicle can't normally achieve.
That and BT tracks are probably just better than real life tracks I guess.

IRL, riding on roller skates is less stable than walking, but faster as you're working against a lot less friction.
CGL is just being anti-fun here.

I don't think it's necessarily like roller skates since with the tracks it seems like you just firmly plant your mechs feet in the ground and let the tracks take care of the rest. No leg movement or technique, just stand straight while the tracks move you.
That said, I completely agree it's CGL being anti-fun. God forbid we enjoy any of the niche equipment without the writers needing to shit on it well after the fact.

It's not stability that's the issue, it's traction. Smooth roads provide very little traction compared to dirt, that's why mechs slip on them in the first place.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iVrf2npLhE
The buster is probably the most illogical example of tracks helping against slipping with how comically small the surface area is on those.
Other tracked mechs in BT are the jabberwocky and diomede, and obviously the quadvees.

It's not consistent. For some stuff, like the original GDL novels, it's correct but then the whole Twilight of the Clans series will list itself as published on the same day: Nov. 22, 2018 when in reality they were released from August '97 to March '99. The Battletech books on the Play store have essentially zero organization outside of bundles, and I eventually had to look up a loose timeline of novels myself to figure out how different ones tied into each other and figure out a reading order.

Picking things up isn't necessarily in every mech's intended use case. A longbow is meant to stand back and sling missiles, not to punch things and pick up loot. And while the rules don't really reflect it, a hand is a fairly complex structure and adding them to a mech that doesn't really need them is just unnecessary complexity.
That's how I justify it, anyway

Kick is usually better in aboutโ€ฆ Iโ€™d say 70% to 80% of cases. Youโ€™ve got an easier time connecting with the attack, concentrate more damage in a single location, automatically force a PSR if you hit the target, and usually donโ€™t have to hold off on weapons to throw one out (unless youโ€™ve got leg-mounted weapons which are not very common). The only time I tend to skip a kick is if the target number is 8+ or 9+, where missing is more likely and I donโ€™t want to risk the PSR for a missed kick. Punches usually win out when youโ€™re fishing for a head hit on something that you can headcap, or if you just canโ€™t risk the chance to fall so you might as well punch.

Yeah, it's a much smaller scale, so tufts of grass that would be up to a 28mm figures ankle are towering stalks at neck height or even above the heads of 6mm figures. What would be an overgrown field at a larger scale is a bamboo forest here.

you can have a lot of fun with that citadel crackly paint to make volcanic bases or cracked ice fields. but don't forget to apply parts of the environment to the mech as well.

too many times i see people putting mechs in woodland bases, but no mud or dirt on the feet of their mechs. gotta remember these are machines with lots of tonnage to them, so they're tearing up the environment when they walk through them.

The old art of the Kintaro has the LRM 5 in the right torso even though it was never supposed to be there. The -20/Rosebud downgrade version moved the LRM 5 there, probably as a late attempt to correct that art mixup. The record sheets for the 3rd League box on the downloads page are fore the -20 and the -22, the latter of which matches the original -19 weapons layout.
I can't see the LA LRM 5 in your picture but if the mini has both I'd guess it's like that to leave you the option of carving off/filling in one of them to match whatever version you want it to be. If there isn't an LRM 5 on the LA then the sculpt is just meant to match the -20.

The main problem is that ICE engines are H E A V Y. Iirc, they're literally 2x the weight of a normal fusion engine with the same rating.
Part of the problem is that they have a massive fuel tank automatically built in. However much gas it takes to let that mech travel 300km on a full tank is how much that engine includes a tank for.

ICE is played out, someone gets the idea to make a cheap ICE mech for desperate producers every other week. What I never see, and what would be far more interesting, is proper retrotech. Not just a new production primitive unit, but an actual mixed tech base primitive + IS unit. It's something I don't even think CGL has actually done. They made the rules for it and then only ever had the people in-universe put ancient designs back into production, along with a couple of new designs that are still 100% on the Primitive tech base.
Did you know that being mixed tech base is binary even though there are three different bases? Once a mech is labeled mixtech, it can freely attach IS, Clan, and Primitive components without accruing any additional penalties aside from the inherent problems with mixtech. Nobody ever does this. Not in-universe, not out of universe. Never.

Or something as mundane as a mostly modern mech with a primitive internal structure and primitive fusion engine. Standard armor is pretty widely available, as are most of the basic weapons. The entire reason they even started making primitive stuff again is that the average industrialmech manufacturer is capable of upgrading to primitive military standards. They could make a mech to primitive standards and then attach armor and weapons sourced from more modern suppliers.

Modest mutations are actually pretty common. There are worlds whose populations had been deliberately altered by the star league or were widely exposed to mutagenic chemicals but the super cancer is treatable. More extreme mutations are rarer, but not outside of the realm of possibility. Especially post-clans. Elementals and clan ASF pilots are freaks and they're still mostly just treated as people.

The only Mechwarrior games I can recall that actually allowed for directional jump jet use somewhat close to how they are used in tabletop are MW2 and MW2mercs, but you had to set them up that way in the keybind settings. They're not setup correctly by default even though they're there that way through options. I setup the numpad for directional jump jets once and it made a world of difference in how readily I could shift targeting focus.
I don't recall it being an option in MW3 or MW4.
