How do you guys deal with flight stands?
Do you use the ones supplied by the box?
Are there good, sturdy alternatives?
How do you blend it with the base?

I usually use something more sturdy.

I do not use the supplied plastic ones.

I buy brass rod from a hobby/model train shop, cut it to whatever length looks good, and paint it black when the model is painted.

Why? What was wrong with the old one?

I remember at one of the old birmingham game days, around 2004 I think, some people were playing a game based entirely around ork koptas. They used radio antenna for the flight stands to allow them to change altitude as one of the game mechanics.

The one that had an extruded cross for the stalk?

I mean the obvious reason to change that is obvious. It looks bad and much more apparent than a smooth transparent stalk.

There is no stand you can put on a miniature that's not obvious. I'll take one that's sturdy over a thin stick that snaps the moment you tip the mini or pack it wrong in the case.

A very old dogfighting game technique, for what it's worth. I've seen it referenced in (much) older friends booklets dating back to the late 70s/early 80s. I've also seen it used for underwater games at conventions and shows (submarine hunts and the like)

Flying units are fucking retarded on a battlefield the relative size of a basketball court, they should be removed from 40k

Question. How the fuck do you make the stand not stand out and look retarded? I've never touched these things because they don't look like they're flying at all

Bicycle spokes. The spokes are threaded and attach to a little nipple. Drill a hole into your miniature. Glue the nipple into that hole. Cut the spoke to your preferred size. Thread the spoke into the nipple. Drill a hole in the base. Run the spoke through the base then bend the metal underneath the base's lip and glue it in place. Now your flying base is detachable which makes storage and transportation easier. Just paint it black and you have a very sturdy flight stand. The clear plastic is not invisible, so don't worry about the "illusion" that the unit looks like it's flying. It will never look like that. Better to be sturdy than not, because the moment you drop a model attached to those plastic flying bases the flight stand will immediately snap in two.
