These matches are played very quickly and pieces can be moved much more quickly/easily on computer than a real board. There is also no increment (aka tard chess) for some of the games and that obviously isn't going to work very well with a real board. Also whatever claim chess could hold to have e-sport status on a computer, if you take away that aspect of it it's pretty throwing away all e-aspects of it.

What I don't get is people who play incorrectly, and knowingly play incorrectly. Like playing the Marshall or Owens, and for some reason they get some sort of fetish pleasure from it by annoying the person trying to play properly.

I also have a theory some of them play improperly later on just to piss the opponent off, for example refusing to put the pawns on the opposite coloured squares to their bishop or deciding to play with 2 knights vs 2 bishops on a wide open board.

Probably 2000 or so. It's human nature to want to do something, trading does something. No one under 2000 just sits on their position. Checks, captures and threats are always overvalued under 2000. You train yourself to look at those moves first. So that's just what gets played usually. To reject everything you first look at requires a certain patience or sense of danger that only exists in strong players.
