Set 9 only has 33 new cards while the rest are just reprints
Only 6 legendary are getting reprinted (1 for each color)

Thoughts?

Probably getting into Asmodee’s milking/maintenance mode.
It’s not hot enough to justify more dev time and probably in what they consider to be stable so no major fixes needed.

Oof, I was worried it was going to be that way. On the one hand, I'm glad the reprints will allow for a lot of the older favorites to stay in tournament play, but on the other, I think this will significantly hurt sales for this set. They should have just cycled the older sets out one at a time instead of this mass exodus. I hope that's how they handle it in future sets.

A disney trading card game seems like peak consumerism to me. Where’s the appeal?

Aren't tcgs in general 'peak consumerism '? No matter the franchise, you're just paying for pictures on card stock. If anything, MtG is worse, starting out as original IP, bloating out, then selling out to franchises to try to make more money. Lorcana, at least, came to the table with more honesty, and in a near reversal of MtG, has been building up its own lore and backstory as the game progresses.

Here's a few fan videos that do a good job of explaining the lore behind Lorcana:

It's an Asmodee product. Unless it's selling a shitload (and sometimes not even then), they don't want to spend any money on it at all if they can help it and just want people to buy the initial product forty times. There will not be any serious advancements, expansions, time, or resources spent on the game. They do this shit with every game they make unless it is something as simple as an asset flip with no real changes to anything physical except artwork, they are going to actively shut down advancement on all but the most basic amount of support for anything they touch.

It's a creative death kneel for any company that they acquire. They just keep buying shit though and killing it off through zero innovation. Ironic that Disney is being treated how Disney usually treats others for once.

What's Asmodee? Lorcana is by Ravensberger.

Yeah, KH had a retarded rule about not mixing the various Disney worlds together, which Lorcana is thankfully not saddled with. Lorcana doesn't go out of its way to take advantage of that very often (Like in the storyline where Jafar hypnotizes Basil into hunting down the Hexwell Crown pieces), but I hope they do more of that as time goes on.

You're using this game to prey on children in game stores or something, right? There's no way you people actually play Disney slop, correct?

Honestly? If I was a child predator, I'd have to find a different method of enticement. There's maybe 1 child per 20 adults playing this at my LGS, and half the time the kid's only there because his parents are playing.

I don't mean to make you feel old, anon, but with the exception of a few necessary modern releases, like Frozen, Tangled, and Moana, most of the properties in this game are over 20 years old. It's nostalgia bait, not pedo bait.

Yeah, and how many kids do you know that would have seen The Great Mouse Detective, or even Robin Hood? No sir, this game is made for nostalgic adults, with the only the odd Raya or Zootopia cards to sucker the newer audiences (not that I think anyone watched Raya).

I'm happy that we're getting Black Cauldron. I'm happy that we're getting Gargoyles. I'm happy that we're getting Darkwing Duck. I'm happy that we're getting various Pixar titles.

But I ask you this...
Where are my goddamn Gummi Bears?

Never could get copies of Rapunzel or Diablo, so I don't feel like I'm missing much. Also, kind of sad if they're just straight up reprinting them, not putting new art on them, like they did with Captain Hook in set 8.

Oh it absolutely will, but to say there's not a meta already (or quickly solidifying each set) is false.

Though its credit, there do seem to be rogue decks that show up now and again, or cards that suddenly find homes mid-set. For example, Chernadog and Diggy Dwarfs both showed up mid set and disrupted the meta.

I won't miss Tamatoa + Dime, that's for sure. Or Mim+Merlin, assuming they aren't reprinting (no way they reprint fox, surely).

My reprint prediction that, if true, will anger people is Be Prepared. It's a well balanced card and limits go-wide without making it unplayable.

I think you're right about Tamatoa + Dime, since a lot of item-deck themed cards have come out since then that seem to stray away from that strategy (at least, in my opinion), but less sure about Mim/Merlin, as they still seem to be supporting that type of play, though if MimFox were to disappear in particular, to be replaced by something slightly less powerful, I wouldn't be that surprised.

They're all rotating, barring reprints - and we know Tamatoa isn't being reprinted. They could still do dime though, I think.

I'm hoping none of the obviously pushed cards - diablo, small Ursula, dime, Strength, etc - get a reprint but I guess we'll see.

I kinda expect 3 amber Ariel and Be Prepared to be reprinted, maybe 1 drop Cindy if they don't reprint either Storm or Strength.

Well, one thing's for sure, we'll have a much better idea of how Ravensberger wants the game to evolve given what they choose to reprint. Hope more info gets leaked soon.
