>Solo play?
Paladin covers the most bases while benefiting having henchmen the most and strong group face abilities.
>In a group
Cleric, one of the strongest casters, a decent martial and able to heal and likely know about a lot of the dark forces in the setting and able to easily ingratiate themselves to a town.

Warlocks can do everything while only being dependent on Charisma, which lets you do a lot outside of combat.

They can fight effectively as melee, cast powerful magic, and, with Pact of the Celestial, they can also heal.

Also the class pairs well with Tieflings

3.0 OA Samurai.
>mechanically atrocious
>a near-clone of the fighter, except worse by having their first feat replaced by getting two masterwork weapons, and their bonus feat selection being much more limited
>losing a sword makes you dishonored (can no longer gain samurai levels, loses any magic sword abilities), and also performing any chaotic act also makes you dishonored

>in exchange, the setting goes out of its way to nut over the importance of samurai and how everyone wants to be one and how anyone who's anyone has at least one level of samurai

No other class lets you strut around with the same level of daisho energy.

Fighter. All the coolest characters from movie/tv/games are fighters, plus I like getting shit done without magic.

I just wish they gave us more different types of maneuvers. Spellcasters get pages upon pages of spells, while we have to lock into a subclass to get one little page of maneuvers.

Paladin always felt like easy mode, but with paladins moving away from direct ties to deities, they are now the best main character class by far.

Immediately after that, Cleric, Warlock and Artifcer are the best generalists.

I also don't like announcing my presence or getting tired just because I'm mad. The biggest appeal for the Thief class to me has always been that it can use its class features all day, every day.

Except in 4e, which is why 4e suuuuucks.

That reminds me of a player I encountered that had rolled up a warlock/warlock that had sold his soul to a devil, then attempted to study the Great Old Ones to find a way out of the deal.

It was probably the weirdest half-hour of poring over a character sheet I've had in a while.

I'll admit warlock struggles to have a strong identity of its own, but I think sorcerers work as a distinct class from wizards, both from a flavor perspective (mutant who naturally taps into magic VS nerd who worked hard to learn it) and mechanical one (Sorcerers were originally supposed to be less spells, but more often; while wizards are more spells, but less often).

I'm given to understand that he was making a character arc out of trying to avoid ending up in one of the Hells, but the next steps apparently involved selling his soul to either an Archfey or Nature itself for the "wicked-awesome power to turn into a bear."

... I chose to interpret that as either a means of gaining a third warlock pact or dipping into Druid, but asked no further questions.
