Only tangentially related but piece of advice I never understood is that men should "join a hobby club" and such to meet women.
If a guy joins a club purely to meet someone, it's blatantly obvious and leads to awkward situations like in the op.
If he joins a club just to hang out and participate in the hobby, while being open to meeting someone, then that hobby avenue will implode if he does manage to score a girlfriend and they then break up for whatever reason. Or, another guy in the club is jealous of their relationship, and leaves in a dramatic fashion.

I know this is just a bait thread, but I played a short FATE campaign with a male DM and other three male players, and two of the players were such massive useless autists, the non autist and I had to constantly encourage them so they'd engage instead of panicking.
