Advance one space, activate trap, pin you, hit for two [no reaction], spend a boost for free attack, roll for melee, hit for five, GG? Wait, what do you mean range was off by one? Okay, rewind everything, let's try that again.
Forcing square pegs through round holes since 2014, it's the Combination Edition of the Board Games General!

Previous: >>96160193

Pastebin: https://pastebin.com/h8Tz2ze8

Survey results: https://pastebin.com/YJPZ44rq

This general encompasses all board game genres - Eurogames, Ameritrash, Ameritreasure, Abstracts, Wargames, and especially the genre that one anon is autistic about at this very moment.

TQs:
Do you prefer your combos clean and straightforward, or convoluted but exciting?
Should combos and synergies in games give incremental advantages, or huge payoffs for proper sequencing and synergies?
What are your favorite combos in games?

And for those with no opinion on the above:
Is putting suboptimal player counts on a box akin to a lie or is it just a welcome option to have (this includes solo gaming)
What high player count game has been rotting on your shelf?

Ave Caesar. Too light for snob gamers but not themed to attract today's newbies.

Battlecon, but those are not standard bases, and with the amount of editions and various stand-alone boxes, I couldn't tell you which ones have that art (older version had very...rudimentary art on the base cards).
Solid fighting game system though. Too notch shit.

New idea for a Root expansion: Racial Tensions.
Replaces the Woodland Alliance with three separate factions that the one player pilots simultaneously. The Mice, Rabbits, and Foxes that must fight each other to the death whenever present in the same clearing. Each faction has their own VP tracker in addition to the playerโ€™s VP tracker. The goal is to suppress the critters of the woodland and prevent them from organizing by forcing them to pay their VPs to you.

>Set it during bubonic outbreak. I read the book called Black Death: A Personal History recently and apparently plagues often led to mass remarriages and real estate repossessions. This fits nicely with Pax Renesque coronation and conspiracy mechanics. Players could represent wealthy landlords trying to use chaos to establish wealth and stockpile for the winter while using their serfs as pawns to undermine their enemies. They could move bishops around to infect the houses (priests were historically responsible for a lot of disease spread)
Well I am convinced anon. Been reading between two fires and you are on the money on the setting and socio-political and economic ramifications.
Pitch it to Phil already, I think it would be up his alley.

Apparently a lot of the difficulty comes from the dice fucking you over pretty steadily and when they don't do that at all the game is laughably easy. Do the other titles rely on dice screwing you over as much? Because if they do it's kind of a shit series. Good theme though, I will give it that.

Kinda weird Warp's Edge is still the best solo game with a fast setup and play time I have come across.

Do you ever wonder why board games were never developed for centuries until like the last 40 years? You'd think such low-tech activity would have a storied history of artists and designers stretching from the times of antiquity. And yet, for thousands of years people were content with super gay shit like backgammon, dice, and trick taking games. It's weird.

I agree with >>96184874; trick-taking games and other traditional card games worked because you just needed one deck of cards to play all of them. Same for dice games. Chess and checkers used the same board and were easy enough to proxy. Actually, now that I think about it, it would be interesting to take an existing "modern" board game and try to make an entirely different game using the same components. You'd probably want one with minimal text.

Less leisure, less education, less sedentary. For example, this was created by a medieval Buddhist scholar specifically for something for his mother to do while she was recovering from illness. But most historical games you hear about were for nobility if complicated enough (including the invention of the wargame for Prussian aristocrats) or very simple games that could be constructed by and entertain children. To the extent what you're talking about did exist, that creativity probably went into sports.

Tigris & Euphrates reprint is really the sum of it at this point. Everything I want is something others in my group have and I just want them to bring more often, so I'd only grab it in a really good sale or if an obviously definitive edition came out. This decade has not been strong so far with its new releases.

I started with heavy MPS euroslop because it's what people brought, but I doubt it was ever my preference. When I started buying my own games to play in that group, I realized it was things like Hansa Teutonica. When I really began collecting with the intent at branching out to public game nights and not just sweaty game stores, the come-to-Jesus moment was Reiner Knizia and obviously he remains my savior.

It's good. I don't use the tactics cards often because I usually play it with non-gamers, particularly a family member who practically has board game phobia, and it wouldn't need it unless you play it very often with the same person. There's a nice amount of uncertainty among an open decision space which allows for someone very experienced with board games to play and have fun with someone very inexperienced.
