I picked up the basics of salamangreat on master duel but I'm having trouble understanding what ideal end boards should look like, I thought it was a simple climbing up the chain getting bigger and bigger guys but eventually I gotta tribute my big guys to get a smaller guy in order to setup negates/card advantage and it's hard to know when that's the correct play or not

20 seconds to demonstrate the deterministic loop of fierce empath+marang being able to draw my whole deck
130 seconds to actually find my 1-of win condition
30 seconds to lock up the entire board
10 seconds to discard down to 7 cards
90 seconds of my miserable opponent roping out
1 second to swing and win


Kona loops have reintroduced the four horsemen problem to MTG. Your endpoint is deterministic, the number of loops is not. Its theoretically a fast process, especially with extra draw spells like stock up in the mix. But shuffling every time you draw means you could take 1 or 50 loops

you explain that with empath and marangs, you can deterministically draw through your entire deck via coil and catch
judge says you can't shortcut it if its non-deterministic
he also points out that because you draw 3 cards at a time, you would deck yourself if you had 1-2 cards left in your library and they included the single wincon you needed
you can show your decklist includes multiple draw spells like stock up and star chart, so even if you drew down to 2 cards in library you'd be guaranteed to hit it without decking
judge still says its a non-deterministic draw order and the rules are very clear:

The best tribes for these creature types right now are probably the Bloomburrow archetypes (rabbits, mice and frogs respectively).

It's hard to say how it will manifest right now since we still don't know what people will run, but there's a pretty good chance you could make a robot tribal deck using at least one of these color combinations. Even if it goes into more colors, we also have Cavern of Souls and Secluded Courtyard to work with, so color-fixing shouldn't be a problem.

Try to stick to two color decks. Only splash a third for late game bombs. Stations are actually okay, especially with warp creatures. Synergies are very very strong but many are very specific a+b.

I've seen aggro and control/late game decks work. But going late game is the stronger strategy I think. Draft a decent amount of bombs and then enough removal or early bodies to stall it out, play bombs, win. The aggro decks I've seen work were absolutely insane, likely team drafted, because no one gets 5+ pieces of uncommon on color removal.

Because they get to have the initiative (not the mechanic). Turn 1, they'll have 1 land on their turn vs the opponent's 0. Turn 2, they'll have 2 lands on their turn vs the opponent's 1. Every time it's their turn, they're probably up on mana so they get to do more. In fast formats, 1 mana difference can be huge. Say games regularly end on turn 4, that means the guy who went first had 10 mana over the course of the game while the guy who went second only had 6. That's almost twice as much.

Absolutely, being proactive is much better than being reactive, especially as the format rises in power. Just look at Legacy and Vintage where T0 interaction is very prevalent if not required in some cases.
But that's only half of it. Going first means you're always going to be up on mana, theoretically, all game. You will have the opportunity to always be making more powerful/more plays throughout the game. That's a VERY good advantage to have.

I think they did a great job with station in that it's a pretty shit powered mechanic in standard and elsewhere but on draft the power level is low enough that you benefit from using all parts of the buffalo. It's actually pretty fun.

You can only splash for a third/fourth/fifth color if you're heavy green. This is back to basics in regards to color compositions in draft sets.

Red seems like it's mostly a support color. 99% of mainly red decks are gonna get fucked. But it plays good support.

Still figuring out the proper tiers and evaluations for a lot of the cards, though. This is a tough nut to crack.

Bro these games are wild. I don't know how some of these guys have 3+ trophies. I've had 3 good drafts only to get btfo by some absolutely crazy decks, and those guys are saying they have been going 2-1 a lot.

There are some very strong synergies but they seem to be very much A+B things so if you draw the wrong half of your deck, even if your card quality is above average, you opponent can still get you with some good draws.

I've seem two general strategies work so far:
Extremely aggressive, and I mean, almost no cards above 4cmc, packing 5+ pieces of removal, and some way to filter cards. I've seen it done with every color. As long as you have enough removal and ability to close out the game, there are lots of ways to get power down and through.

Second strategy is to go for late game. Have the ability to stall, recover, and then play big bodies and run over your opponent. There are actually a few ways to wipe the board. Ways to ramp into big shit. Depends on the rares you open.

WotC hasn't really given any tribal decks support outside humans and soldiers in years. The closest you'll find today are the generic monored lords in Foundation (plus OG Krenko for some reason) and the goofy goblins from Aetherdrift. They tried making dragon tribal viable with the return to Tarkir, but the cards are better utilized in the Omniscience combo. Well the OG Lorwyn gives you a bunch of dual colored tribes. Bloomsdale or what it was called recently did a similar thing, but the tribes are rather new, like Lizards and Frogs, you won’t find real support for it in older sets, though the types do show up.

The promises of TCGs are:
Creative deck making.

There is no creative deck expression, there is the meta deck list everyone must pick from and the rest are just you wasting money as it is mathematically and objectively proven which cards and decks are the correct ones to play competetively.
There is no balance, there is no game, just who has the biggest budget, who gets the most expensive cards(the top meta deck).

At this point all you have left is draft, and at this point what you should always do is just buy a well-designed, self-contained deck-building game instead. It'll be a one time cost of one draft event and will actually give you everything that TCGs promise but fail to deliver, while also having a near infinite replay value.

Don't do TCGs kids. It will ruin your brain and lungs with addiction and forever chemical dust from the coating they use for the cards.

That's because the dragon "tribal" cards are either awful (outside-tribe cards with effects not good enough to justify it), or aren't actually related to the tribe (Omen).
Don't get me wrong, Omen is good text to have on a card, but it doesn't push a tribal direction. It just makes the card itself better as a standalone.

Dragon tribal literally can't be good while WotC is convinced the cards need to be 6+ mana with no feasible discount avenues because le shivan dragon. It doesn't help that a large number of them are unprotected creatures that rely on combat damage triggers for their effect.

I am very impressed with Edge of Eternities. The draft portion doesn't feel anywhere near solved to me, and, even better, the games are intense and full of choices and skill tests.
Add that to a set that has nothing but cool looking cards in it, and they hit it out of the park with this one. This was exactly what I needed with all this UBslop running around. Next actual set is literally next year.
I've only drafted it 4 times, but right now I think this is gonna turn out to be my favorite draft set in the past two years.

I hate that the flavor seems made to fit the Carnage symbiote itself, rather than Kletus wearing the symbiote. Like, it brings back a weak dude and makes them go crazy, which is in line with what the symbiote itself did, but Carnage has never really been defined by the symbiote part of it, it's always been Kletus that's the defining part of Carnage. I guess maybe we're getting more than one Carnage card? That'd have other issues.

the argument isn't that it's balanced, the argument is that if you get rid of it, control as an archetype just gets deleted and we go back to combo vs stax/bazaar because doing anything else is not worth it
I personally don't care if control is unplayable, I've been on MWI since the initiative creatures came out, but if you're under the impression banning lurrus is gonna make the format more healthy, you're in for big surprise

The whole point of Vintage is to do broken shit with cards you can't play anywhere else. Fair Ux control isn't fun or interesting to play as or against and BUG at least has the distinction of being built as an anti-meta deck using specific hate cards which demand green. Instead, Lurrus control just plays the best cards available in the best colours available, and the deckbuilding restriction more or less doesn't exist. It's not what people sign up to Vintage for.
