His favorite mecha shows, and the best two in his self-admitted opinion, are Code GEASS and Eureka 7.
He enjoyed Gundam: Witch of Mercury, and that inspired him to try and marathon the entire gundam franchise, but he dropped it after finishing 0078 and Zeta, two episodes into ZZ. He then declared the franchise dog shit.

On cooling vests vs. cooling suits for MechWarriors, what about in the Periphery? While post-Jihad nation-states like the Filtvelt Coalition and the Timbuktu Collective may have since they were created from secessionist movements from the Federated Suns and the Lyran Commonwealth respectively, what about the Taurian Concordat (this also includes the Calderon Protectorate), the Magistracy of Canopus, the Marian Hegemony, and the Outworlds Alliance? Would those Periphery powers have gotten colling suits for their respective MechWarriors?

The Taurians and Canopians probably would, everyone else is iffy. They're "available" but that doesn't mean the small guys with very limited resources want to spin up a line for them. On the other hand, infantry scale anything is easier to work with than vehicle scale.

Buddy, actual Knights of the Republic of the Sphere still used the old gear in the 3130's because of its ruggedness. The old jacket/bootshorts/bucket/boots remains the most popular dress even into ilClan. Some warriors may prefer the full cooling suits or the holographic neural headbands, but average McFuck is still rocking the 3rd War special, both because he can afford it and because it lasts.

A non-retarded sword. I seriously want to gp back in time, find whatever dipshit Hollywood fuckhead decided to first hold a sword backwards, and prevent him from ever doing movies. Because this terminally myopic idea has fucking infested popular culture, and anyone who's ever even fought sticks with their siblings as kids can easily recognize how impractical, stupid, and useless the reverse sword grip is. But because the goddamn baboons making these decisions have never touched a sword in their lives, they think it looks cool and morons who don't have the first clue about sword fighting lap it up.

The gigawatt power is probably coming more from the ECM of the mechs rather than the actual myomer itself.

On a related note, I find it humorous Battletech went through all this effort to distinguish their mechs from other settings by making them more animalistic and 'fleshlike' than other mech settings...only to ditch the actual giants from the setting they initially came from.

>On a related note, I find it humorous Battletech went through all this effort to distinguish their mechs from other settings by making them more animalistic and 'fleshlike' than other mech settings...only to ditch the actual giants from the setting they initially came from.

I think it took Jordan Weisman a couple years to realize that people would want detailed, coherent lore. Remember that originally it was just a set of rules intended to help sell licensed minis.

On the other hand, by the time he started BT, he'd already done some writing for Traveler and a Star Trek RPG, so he should have known better. Maybe he didn't expect wargamers to want the same level of detail as RPG players?

>In fairness to the Clans, it seems like disproportionately many white people got off of Earth (which makes sense, poor people can't afford to migrate to the stars).
>Who's to say that the SLDF wasn't also disproportionately white? Especially because I wouldn't be surprised if Capellans and Dracs were less likely to join up. And the Second Exodus was pretty small, there could have been a founder effect amplifying the discrepancy even more ยฏ\_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ
Well hold on, that doesn't really track when you put it that way.
If all the rich people that left earth were white, then the people who stayed behind in the Hegemony weren't. If anything, that would mean the SLDF and TH house troops were primarily brown.
Furthermore, Muslims were the last significant population to notably stay on Earth because they weren't sure how prayers would work out in space. They eventually figured it out, but by then they'd have been a significantly major chunk of Terra's population for generations. Who's to say the SLDF weren't primarily browns and Muslims?
How do we know notables like Kerensky weren't Muslim?
After all if all the Whites Christians, Jews, etc left Earth first, they can't also be the majority on Earth, it's one or the other.

>If all the rich people that left earth were white, then the people who stayed behind in the Hegemony weren't. If anything, that would mean the SLDF and TH house troops were primarily brown.

That doesn't follow. Terra was the most highly populated planet in the Hegemony (12billion in 2766), but lots of worlds had populations almost as high. New Earth had a population over 4 billion in 2766, Thorin had over 2 billion in 3067 (and probably higher back in the day), Dieron 2.4 billion in 2766, Caph 3 billion, Keid 5.3 billion, etc. And the Hegemony had about 100 worlds. Even given that some of them were tiny like Sirius, we know that the Hegemony worlds were in general the most highly developed, so Terra was probably something like 12/200 โ‰ˆ 6% of the Hegemony.

And yes, those numbers are reasonable. People on the newly colonized planets probably had insanely high population growth rates. The average fertility rate in the US in 1800 was almost 4 per woman taking into high infant mortality! The US consistently hit 3% annual growth from natural growth (i.e. not counting immigration) through the 1870s. Similar numbers exist in other "settler colonies". When well-off people expand into a vacuum, they expand fucking fast. For comparison, the rate in the UK was around 1.2-1.5% annual growth. It wouldn't take very long to hit huge populations, especially if people are having 6 or 7 kids without infant mortality.

On top of that, the Hegemony did not provide all of the SLDF.

>How do we know notables like Kerensky weren't Muslim?

They do however have a culture of intentionally hampering their combat effectiveness on a personal, tactical and strategic level through bidding, so handicapping themselves both as individuals and as fighting forces is not even an uncommon thing among the clans.
It also seems to me that clan culture would easily create a toxic environment of warriors pretending they're personally above the detrimental affects of small cockpits, with widespread ridicule of anyone voicing discomfort or a hampering of their abilities as weak and incompetent.

To be absolutely fair, Clan mechs do have cockpits that are significantly smaller than IS cockpits in the fluff, they a lot of the campaign/long patrol stuff IS Mechs have like the cot, the toilet unit, the storage, etc, since Clanners design their equipment around duels and quick skirmishing, not long campaigns where they need to be in their mech for days to weeks at a time.
It's just not represented mechanically because their small cockpits aren't so small as to hamper actual pilot ability, it just costs out the non-essentials for mech combat, whereas the small cockpits designed by the IS were intended to cut down enough to save tonnage, even at the cost of comfort and piloting ability.
One has the style of combat their culture revolves around in mind, the other saving space and weight.

That's not something the average pilot can do, though, and certainly not in combat situations. It's the mech equivalent of air show trick flying.
That being said, mechs are supposed to be a lot more agile than the videogames would suggest. They can run, jump, crouch, climb, and of course rip off another mech's arm and beat its pilot to death with it. They can more or less copy normal human range of motion.

I mean, if you go by mechanics then even the average MechWarrior can have their mechs climb vertical heights, accurately toss things, strafe, etc, the kinds of precise movement that require a lot of agility that a stiff, bipedal tank like presented in the vidyas couldn't pull off. The rule books are also pretty explicit about how the Neurohelmet bridges that gap between pilot and mech, making it feel more like putting on a suit and not just piloting a humanoid vehicle. How agile and humanlike a Mech can move is purely a matter of skill, not inherent limitations people assume Mechs have.

All the same, you'd train the pilots to walk in ways that maximize the shooting and to not flinch when being shot at.

What are you house rules / optional rules you always use when possible?

For me: Punch table melee weapons. If you're paying the tonnage for it, it SHOULD be a better default choice than a kick.
Threshold PSRs for aerospace, except for if something has the flak special rule, then it causes PSRs for hitting like default.

Mmmm, LAMs. If you can bring a piloting 2 jockey they can do good work, bring a normal pilot and they die in a burning pile sometime during your movement phase. Awful in the air, bad on the ground, interesting in air-mech mode.

I like that the book highlighted their advantages on the operational scale, they're great scouts if you don't have to worry about them being targeted by enemy air.

Howdy frens, I was sick for a while and couldn't paint or really get into the game, but I have quite a few boxes that I ordered a while ago with the mercenaries kickstarter. Now I'm feeling better, so I'd like to start playing Battletech :D

I have 3 LRM Carriers, 1 Patton, 1 Black Python, 1 Highlander IIC, 1 SM5 Field Commander, 4 Savannah Masters, 1 Charger, 1 Cicada, 1 Clint, 1 Hermes II, 1 Dervish, 2 Vulcan, 1 Locust IIC, 2 Demolisher Heavy Tanks, 2 Schrek PPC Carriers, 2 Condor Heavy Hover Tanks, 2 Pegasus Scout Hover Tanks, 1 JagerMech, 1 Scorpion, 1 Whitworth, 2 Manicore Heavy Tanks, 2 Vedette Medium Tanks, 2 SRM Carrier, 1 Devastator, 1 Flea, 1 Firefly, 1 Caesar, 1 Quickdraw, 1 Starslayer, 1 Ostsol, 1 Chameleon, 2 Maxim Hover Tanks and 2 Galleon Light Tanks

Yes, I know there are a lot of vehicles, but I was in full combined arms autism when I put eurobucks in the mercenaries kickstarter

I'd like to make an Inner Sphere combined arms list to get into the game and play, but I'm not sure how to balance it. On the one hand, I'd like to include a lot of vehicles, but I heard that can quickly become cancerous, and I don't want to make a cancerous or cheese list that's not fun to play against and since there aren't many players where I am, I don't want to show up and have a hellish list in my first game, that would give a bad first impression

Soooo does anyone have any advice on how to make the list or ideas for lists to make? I would really like to make some combined arms that are fun and balanced for everyone, both me and my opponent. Thanks you so much frens

To make specific lists weโ€™d have to know more about the kind of games youโ€™re going to be playing. If itโ€™s just pick up games with a BV limit and a cap on max units, thatโ€™s pretty easy, but most groups set different restrictions or change the BV limits around depending on how much time you want to spend at the table, and thereโ€™s no strict rules on any of this so thereโ€™s not really a โ€œstandardโ€ BV to aim for.

Unless youโ€™re building out different lances or companies for a known BV limit though, Iโ€™d say just paint everybody in a paint job you enjoy, and build your lists from that pool as you need them.

The way to avoid cancer is to keep total model count reasonable. So if your opponent has a lance of 4 Mechs, don't have more than say 6 units total. More than that not only gets annoying because it takes time, it's also unfair because of initiative sinks.

One thing to do in general is to use the slightly cheaper vehicles to allow you to have slightly more expensive Mechs.

For example, the Demolisher is a 6-9 hex radius bubble that enemies won't enter, or a fire magnet. And it's twice the guns for less than a Hunchback!

Or use a Shreck as heavy fire support instead of an Awesome, saving 500+ BV. LRM Carriers are also amazing fire support for cheap.

Anyway, use those extra BV you save to let you deploy that Black Py - I mean, White Raven, and that Highlander.

Stay away from the SM5, it's good but it's very, very expensive for what it does.

Also, consider having something proxy for a Saladin (actually, the SM5 would be great for that since it's also a fast hover with an AC/20). Those are crazy little guys and a lot of fun to use.

Yes but MBT's aren't really a fair comparison, an MBT is more of a light mobile turret compared to a mech's land battleship. Compare the 80 tons of an assault mech to the 58,000 tons of an Iowa class battleship and you have a better example.

I'm not really sure about the cost in BV in my area. The only place in my fucking country where people talk about Battletech is a half-dead facebook group, but I'm hoping that by posting there, I'll be able to ask them. From what I've seen online, the โ€˜standardโ€™ is 4k/6k? But after that, it depends on the era of what I see online?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking of doing in the end, or else I'll look at the BV price of the minis and paint half with one colour scheme and the other half with another, so I'll have two groups and I can force my friends to play... I had thought about doing that with a more classic mech-oriented force and a full combined arms as OPFOR, but I'm not really sure, I need to think about it, thanks

>>96223064
Thanks, I'll make a note of that :D. I like the idea of using vehicles so I can use more expensive mechs. I'll try to stick with the idea of having a few more units than my opponent to keep the game fun. But is it okay to play a Clan mech like the Black Python with a mainly IS list?

>But is it okay to play a Clan mech like the Black Python with a mainly IS list?

So, short answer is "no", especially because the Black Python specifically is basically a Steel Viper (and later Snow Raven) exclusive, but no one should be too much of an asshole. Either say you're playing DA (which the SM5 is), or say that it's a second-line Clan unit (which use vehicles, and sometimes even IS vehicles) and if you aren't Vipers that the Python is isorla, or if you're an IS force, say that the Python was taken during a raid on a Viper world protected by a second-line unit. Works better if you're FedCom, but not necessary.

But really, most people aren't assholes about that sort of thing as long as you aren't obviously min-maxing to combine the TSM Berserker with a Hellstar or whatever.

I'll say either of the blood spirits or widowmakers, as an attempt to pad the council for Alaric. Blood Spirits to collect all the dregs from the free guilds and loose ex-clan holdings into a "see, all clanners should be united in the spirit of doing whatever Alaric says, so you can be a real clan too!" type group, leaning on their power of friendship motif. Widowmaker because Wolf already has a bunch of their bloodlines anyway, so making up some bullshit about them earning their way back to being a clan (who always votes for whatever Alaric wants, of course) would be easy.

Those would be a primitive weapon for which there are no stats. The stats given to what few primitive weapons we have are already stretched extremely thinly across the distant past. They give the same statline to WW1 tank guns and future space guns from the year 2236. The colonial marines failing to squash the outer reaches rebellion on Skye had light and medium rifles on their space tanks. Too many things are compressed into the rifle family of weapons. It's a gross approximation because they needed something for retrotech. It's not a good benchmark for actual old weapons.

Honestly they should just drop the mech mode and readjust the Airmech and ASF modes. There's no real need to have bipedal mode and slightly more bipedal mode beyond keeping in a reference that the last line dev clearly disdained.
Plus it's probably a lot more palatable to have a mech that just needs to tuck in and lock its limbs to look and fly like a plane, rather than a whole seperate transformation where the cockpit pulls back and pops out into a head unit for reasons.

Mech mode has a big advantage in tight terrain and if there's a lot of flak. Airmechs have absolutely pitiful walk speeds, they're typically something like 1/2 or 2/3 on the ground. If they can't or don't want to fly, they're sitting ducks. In mech mode they can at least run at 6, 8, or 9.

That's fair, I'd still argue that the mech form doesn't need to be fully humanoid though. It could be as simple as just Airmech mode having the wings fully popped out and legs bent further to compensate for jumps, and Mech mode having the wings folded fully back with the legs stretched out a bit for running unimpeded.

Let's assume that a Mech has the same volume as a human, proportionally.

A 100kg human would have a volume of roughly 0.1 m^3, and is 2m tall.

So a 14 meter tall Mech would be (7^3 * 0.1) = 34.3 m^3

100,000kg (100 tons) / 34.3 m^3 = 2900kg/m^3, which is about three times as dense as water.

But an Atlas is way more swole than a human. By a factor of three? Probably. A factor of five? Maybe.

But styrofoam is 1-4% the density of water, whereas a Mech will be probably in the 10-50% range. So lighter than water, maybe, but not styrofoam.

It's the DropShips that get insane.

If we assume that a Union is an oblate spheroid of radius 81.5m and height 78 meters, its density comes out to 1.66 kg/m^3 while fully loaded, which is on the lighter end of styrofoam (water is just about 1000kg/m^3).

There's definitely too many rules to put in a single book, especially with all the construction rules.

You could maybe break off the construction rules to their own book, and aerospace rules into their own book, possibly support vehicles (in which case you may as well do conventional vehicles and infantry...)

According to sourcebooks, at least some of the mechs' components are made of a sort of "foamed metal". It's made of bubbles of liquid metal that use some kind of furistic technology to arrange the bubbles in such a way that when they cool and harden they form a supportive latticework, like honeycombed armor but finer.

Incorrect, BMR exists and isn't "too big".
This is a rather odd phenomenon in the gaming world that only afflicts wargames and RPG's
With RPG's it makes sense, your encyclopedia of creatures needs to be a single book, and so on with various things, there truly is too much to compile it in a single volume with all the other rules, hell in many cases you need multiple volumes for just that one aspect of an RPG.
Wargames however can easily be single volume items, and in cases like CGL and GW splitting rules up into multiple books you end up with insane amounts of duplicate printing of rules because of it, otherwise you couldn't charge $60 for a hardcover as it would only be 10-20 pages per book, so duplicating entries and stuffing in full-page art, useless and controversial maps showing where modern IRL religions are in the game and full-page fluff entries need to all be jammed in to pad the documents out.

It's good, igloo is like halfway to being a great show.
Gundam does as well, just more so later in the war. The zaku was kind of a piece of junk compared to later war designs, and so tanks being able to push back zaku units when used properly started falling apart when higher spec units appeared. By the end of the war tanks are basically pointless and they mostly stop being used afterwards. You still get missile trucks and other ground units but there's basically not much point in fielding MBTs, your armor wont stop a beam and your cannon wont kill a mobile suit.

I wish petite mobile suits showed up more. They're so cute. When are they gonna redo protomechs?

You are referring to the issue of gendered nouns? Regarding german ships it was not entirely consistent and was occasionally decided by personal whim. Some were "der X", some "die X", some "das X".
Were it a simple castle it would of course be "das", but it is a dropship, that would seem to lend far more leeway.

No by rule ship names are always feminine therefore "Die X", So if the drop ship would be called 'castle' or 'Schloss' one would refer to it as "Die Schloss" but if the ship is called 'the castle' or 'Das Schloss' things get really wonky, and arguably could be correctly referred to as " Die 'Das-Schloss' "(IE the initial article gets incorporated into the X). Either way Der is incorrect.

If 1st SLDF Royal units were only manned by Terran Hegemony natives, I can imagine units like the regiments of the Eridani Light Horse and the 320th Dragoon Regiment would have be cosmopolitan in nature as that was Star League in theory, but how did that work for those who defected from the SLDF from the New Vandenburg uprising until the dissolution of the 1st Star League?

Take the 159th Hussar Regiment that defected to the Taurian Concordat during the New Vandenburg Uprising and became the Red Chasseurs in 2784. I imagine they defected to the Concordat because a good chunk of that SLDF Hussar regiment would have been Concordat natives but if the SLDF is supposed to be a multi-national force, what about 159th Hussar Regiment personnel that didn't come from the Concordat? Were they willing to abandon their homes or did they stick with Kerensky?

Rules of language are an evolving thing that change when the people speaking the language start saying things differently.
Dictionaries and Thesaurus's, etc... do not lay down the rules of a language, they record the rules as observed. Rules which do not remain stagnant.
If you subscribe to the bullshit you are peddling than I fully expect you to rite and speak "Ek" instead of "Ich" and to do so in Elder Futhark runes.

So it's a Blazer made from medium lasers, but technically worse since it gets the full tonnage of two medium lasers and 1.5 times round down damage.
1.5 tons and 8 damage would have been too good I guess. Maybe with fractional accounting it could be 1.8 tons.

I like 3D printing mechs mostly for this reason (PGI aesthetics being superior is another) I have scaled my mechs down to 90% of the syllogy files default which keeps all but the largest assaults from overhanging the standard hexbase.

There's no justification for it; though frankly there doesn't need to be. I'm just not going to buy a specialist gimmick product that's going to look weird next to my 'normal' mechs.

There's a lot of scale fuckery that I allow based on different runs and makes of models; I'm not about to encourage possibly the only company with the control necessary to keep the models relatively consistent for fucking with the consistency of the models.

How many mechs does the Gothic Marauder miniature represent?

Well no, going by the Gothic timeline it'd be the same chassis regardless of ornamentation.

Why are people freaking out about scale in a game that's perfectly acceptable to play with tokens, standees, and literally anything that fits on the correct base? You're all height 2 man, it doesn't matter.
It's not like they're twice the size or something either.

Double size is a lot less than double height, they're actually not far off of being double size.

Just be happy you got him into it.
I can't help the fact you think a man in armour is peak mech design that's a you problem.

>>96217362
Your friend is right. If he gave a shit enough to look at Sarna and look at the companies that made the game he'd feel very proud of himself.

>Code GEASS and Eureka 7
Well.
>He then declared the franchise dog shit.
I mean some of the series are but...
He has shit taste but, he's still right about mechs being ugly as shit, they have been redesigning them, and the setting being retarded.

The larger models can legitimately impede playing the game. When the models hang off the hex base, they also overflow the hexes on the map.
This isn't really a problem in, say, AS, but CBT it's pretty annoying.

I just want the decks of cards , the aces system. I already got a giant pile of mechs. I just want to automate cool fights between them without ME interjecting myself and fudging the numbers and shit.
