I can never remember, after you've layered, when you're doing transitions between them, do you glaze/stipple light to dark or dark to light? Or does it not matter?

I glaze dark, just because darker paints usually have more transparency when thinned thus making it easier to glaze. Also find its easier to tint/stain a lighter basecoat under than the other way round. But no hard and fast rules, I glaze and stipple light colors all the time

Here's a mostly done pic of my version of the free model of the month, just applied transfers, gonna try and enter it in the store competition later. It's a Space Wolf Blood Claw, but I decided to paint it as Wolfspear and use the old transfer sheet for the chapter that came in an issue of White Dwarf.

Most of the armour was airbrushed to a base coat of Army Painter Air Uniform Grey, then their Shark White, then Liquitex White Ink, then a brush-on couple of coats of Gryph-Charger Grey mixed 1:1 with Contrast Medium, gives it that really nice grey-ish blue-ish tone.

I've found a problem with airbrushing colours on like this is that when I need to fix mistakes, it can be hard to recreate the exact blending, so maybe a pure all brush recipe would have been better.

I left the backpack off for painting, it made a nice enough difference but probably not worth it for rank and file models.

I'm not sure if I like the transfer on the right knee, feels too artificial, not really right, (maybe both the red and pure white pull the viewer's eyes away too much?) but the little transfer on the forehead came out looking really neato, it adds so much to the model I'm really surprised.

You can paint over tranfers to blend them into the model better. Just use the same colour to rough up the edges a bit and add some scratches.

Your white still has a bit of texture, so do the black pauldrons. Should've probably thinned a touch more. If I squint my eyes enough I can also see the edge of that knee transfer. My advice would be to varnish the entire thing to unify all the surfaces and smooth out the decal edges at the same time. Edge highlights could be a bit neater. If you have an airbrush I'd highly recommend you try doing some basic volumetrics/zenithal highlights of your main basecoat. It adds a lot of depth to a mini for very little effort. Oh and there's a tiny overspill on his "collar".
But I'm being picky because you said you're submitting it to a competition so I assumed you want some feedback. It looks nice, the scheme is solid and I like the soft shading on his leg. You're right about the decal on his forehead and I'm very impressed how you drilled the barrel exactly at the center.

True story.
I was just batch painting some skitarii, and while I was doing some grey bits I noted that I missed 2 purity seals on them, and then when I tried to find them again I could only fine 1. I triple checked them and still can't find another one, but I guarantee I'm going to find it again at the least convenient time possible.

AP speed paints all behave the same. They cover, flow, mix, dry, and pool the same. Black, white, orange, yellow, purple, brown, green, etc. No matter the color, no matter the hue, they all behave the same.

That also means they all have the same pluses and minuses so when you know how to handle one, you can handle them all. Contrast paints vary pretty dramatically, even the same color but different hues.

AP has one of the largest pallete ranges of speed paints and even their metallics perform like the other speed paints they just don't really do the whole shading difference so they still need a wash. Not having to learn a different technique for metallics is pretty substantial though.

First ever try at basing like this, any words of advice?
I filed down a bunch of them so they're irregular/round to simulate limestone with lighter colours, while the very regular and square ones would be a mix of gray (basalt) and shades of brown (porphyry)
Initially I wanted to plop down some astrogranite as a base and in-between gaps, but now I'm starting to think it would end up being too messy at this scale

reds are usually more transaprent than other paints, painting red on black is a bad idea
try starting on a brown, purple or darker red for the first coat or two, and then move to the red you want, that way you can also use that first coat as a shadow
for reference i do my reds on a brown primer

black primer without a zenital is a meme most of the time anyways, makes basecoats way harder for no reason, try priming brown or a neutral gray next time, even offwhite if you want really bright colors
it also depends on the paintjob you are going for, it can be ok to prime black black templars for example

She does but it's so small that when I tried to paint it, I would constantly smear around instead. Since she is 3D print and I picked smallest option, I assume that in scaled up version like 15cm one, it's much easier to take out. I'm not that good, however.

>Burping and bubbles
Never encountered any issues with literally hundreds of dropper bottles of paints.
Pots are just fucking dumb design because it exposes paint to air for an extended time if using the well in the caps or they are a bigger bitch to transfer to a wet pallet if you go that route. GW knows this and won't change shit because they hate their consumers. All they have to do is offer the same paint in dropper bottles to let the market decide but they won't because "Fuck 'Em" is the company motto.

I think it looks nice, there's definitely room for improvement but overall it delivers. Bigger sculpts are not always easier to deal with as the larger areas will be harder to fill out- both to create visual interest and because there's more room for mistakes.

That said, you can always go back and work on it if you want it to be fancier, you can try and do something to make those white dress trims interesting, smooth out the skin transitions, paint those buckles etc

By the way I think the staff crystal looks quite nice.

I just realized the first eye step pic also includes the eyelashes from step 3 by mistake. Just pretend they aren't there. And there are probably spelling mistakes.

Also obviously this is just a paint-over, and predicated on having some sharp brushes and good brush control, but at this scale this should all be pretty achievable.

TLDR: Got the 200th store US swag, including Centos. Had a game. Lost, but had a blast playing!

I was pretty sure my opponent and I had agreed to meet at the Warhammer Store in Denton, as I knew the Citadel would be slammed. I got to Denton early, got the 200th store swag (including Centos), and got a message from my opponent that he was on his way. Sat down to chat with the other ladz, expecting my opponent to come in at any moment, then received a message: "I got us a table!"

No, you didn't. I'm here, and none of other the people in this building are you. Wait... are you at the Citadel?

Yes, he had gone to the Citadel. They were indeed swamped, with a double file line wrapped all around the store. They sold out of all their goodies, but we did indeed have a table, and did indeed have a game after I made it down there, and it was a ton of fun.

Wish I could play more often!

I paint with dropper bottles constantly. For you to get 'burping' or 'bubbles' you would need to be using your dropper bottle fundamentally and demonstrably wrong; this is basic fluid physics at work. You should be holding your dropper bottle 180 degrees inverted or close to that, waiting a whole second before squeezing to extract drops of paint and apply pressure slowly to ensure you get the right amount out of the bottle.

For you to get burping or bubbles you would need to either have basically no paint left in the bottle or be holding it at a severe angle close to horizontal. Air bubbles don't exist in a fluid down the bottom, unless you've somehow fucking carbonated your dropper bottles.

Is there a solution to the bubbling in Vallejo Xpress and the reformulated Game Colour paints? I bought both and I really don't want to shell out more. I had quite a high opinion if Vallejo prior fo this.

>is it possible that a drop of IPA or airbrush flow improver might "cut" the bubbles? I get the same from my white ink

If I can solve that problem I can save a couple of hundred bucks

Pretty solid effort; only thing I have to contribute is maybe consider hitting the exposed bone with a different wash to give them a bit more dimensionality since they look a bit flat and it's hard to see all the detail present.

What didn't you enjoy about them? I'm not a fan myself for several reasons but I especially find their modern models to be onerous to paint. I prefer the older stuff like what you have mostly because I like the modularity contrasted by the more recent monopose stuff they do.

Hey guys. I'm working on a used B-25J Mitchell bomber kit and just realized that the previous owner made a modification. He removed the two gunner windows on each side and left some pretty ugly cuts. Any advice on patching it up to make the hull look smooth again? Might be tough since the cuts curve a little around the bend. The sections he removed aren't in the box either so I'd have to get creative.

Yeah that sounds like the way to go. The section is suppose to be rounded and I'm not sure how to do that well. At worst I might just leave it a flat surface if I can't sculpt it properly. Maybe I should press something round against it before it hardens or something like that.

Their acrylics are good and comparable in cost these days. While dropper pots may arguably be better the GW pots aren't so bad it makes a big difference.

There are some gaps in the range - they lack a pure white and pure black for instance, and their metallic paints are generally poor - but they're more consistent than something like vallejo.

I use vallejo for the black, AK for the white, Metal n Alchemy for the metallic and GW for the rest.

The transition between the rectus abdominus and linea alba, that is the high points of the abdominal muscles and the lower points, is too severe. In addition the two flesh tones you've chosen are so far apart that it reads more as they've gotten sunburnt in very weird areas or have a skin condition. My advice is to go over all of the flesh tones and blend a bit more from where the light flesh meets the dusky tones and tie it all together with a very light skin toned wash. Notice how in attached pic the skin is a uniform tone at the high and low points. You want to emulate that while still maintaining some difference between them so that it reads moreso as defined muscles with slight shadows in recesses.

Ok, so further research of the Vallejo bubble issue is curious. I don't trust Reddit for advice on anything because people there are stir crazy.

I'm annoyed because I always supported their products and some of the advice is really vague.

https://youtu.be/qkGtmSNR_Jk?feature=shared

This video is a little clearer, essentialy I gather
>a sable brush with a good tip is less likely to be an issue because of its shape or somesuch
>the paints, even the xpress are thin but should potentially be thinned and layered more
>they should be shaken gently but the don't need it as much as other paints

https://youtu.be/qkGtmSNR_Jk?feature=shared

Sorry to shit up the thread because I'm just an amateur but I wonder if I can resolve it. I have been using art store brushes so it could be a factor?

I don't mean this in a wrong way, but your painting skills are not good enough to care about things like this (neither are mine). Speaking of Vallejo paints, has anyone used their fluorescent paints? This shit has the consistency of glue, it's so bizarre. I don't really understand how you're supposed to paint with it. If you mix it into any other paint, it hardly changes the colour but does change the consistency of the whole mixture to glue. I kept adding water to try and thin it and all it did was start to make squelching sounds when I mixed it.

Seems like a good post to (you) for my question - how do I actually paint large white fabrics? I skated by until now by painting off-white or only needing tiny true-white details, but now I need to paint fabric that is majority pure-white like Jaina's dress here. For now, my tactic was to start with dark grey and build up, but the top levels of pure white are super transparent and cover poorly, leading to an almost textured feeling. Also in general I found white to feel super chalky and needing to thin it more than other paints as otherwise it feels like I'm drawing with a pencil. Is airbrush the only way here? Or am I om the right track and just need 20 layers of superthin white glaze?

Hey /wip/,
I have three questions for you:

1. Do you guys recommend any good basing materials? I've been using Vallejo's ground texture but I'm looking at AK's different diorama textures instead. I want a more even and realistic earth and desert compared to what the vallejo ground texture gives me.

2. Which grass tufts and basing material companies do you recommend? I'm looking for realistic and detailed tufts and shrubberies. Been using a mix of a small company and Gamer's grass so far, I like Gamer's Grass but I'm wondering if there are even better makers with more options.

3. Any good video tutorials or walk-throughs on inks and weathering powders?

Consider making home made flocking. Go to your local big box hardware store/lumber supplier and ask them for a bag of sawdust (bring your own bag, like a garbage bag). Make sure that the sawdust isn't from treated lumber as that can include arsenic or other hazardous chemicals. Take your sawdust home and then combine with isopropyl alcohol and diluted acrylic paints to make instant home made flocking for not even a dollar worth of materials.

New to the hobby. I ordered like 50 paints. I tried to cut as much as I could but it was impossible... Even if THIS model doesn't need THAT particular pain then it turns out that the next model NEEDS that paint... I got milked dry. Damn that hobby stuff is expensive. Obviously I'm too new and inexperienced (and need to paint a whole army) to mix and match so I bought ready paints. Doesn't help that the army I decided on is very colorful (and that's a good thing).

Little question about varnishes - Vallejo "Mecha Color" matte one is quite durable and have pretty good matte finish but when I try to use it straight from bottle, it ends up with visible brush strokes. When I thin it with Vallejo thinner (either normal or airbrush one), it helps in this aspect but also makes layer more glossy (I noticed that Vallejo thinner also make other paints glossy when added). What could I use instead?

Citadel is fine if you know what to do with paint, but it fucks over new painters like that anon.
>bottles built to be annoying for pallete uses, results in many unthined abominations
>specializations like layer vs base filter noobs who can't grasp why their paints have shit coverage
>paint colors are too specialized so noobs will buy 50 different paints and still go like "ugh, I hate that I don't have Ork Foreskin Pink, how will I paint my Orks now???"
Reality is that what every noob should actually start with is like 12 most basic RBG colors + 4 main metal colors from literally any dropper bottle brand and it will be more than enough.

You are aware that you can't really mix to get all shades you want? Most acrylics when mixed in more than two components behave odd and result in brown/gray instead. You can mix red and blue and instead of purple result could be odd shade of brown.

This doesnt work with modelism minis since they turn into a grey sludge when mixed.

Wait what? Never heard about this ever happening. What kind of brands would that be? I've only used vallejo, very little citadel and evel less scale 75 for mixing, and it was never an issue.

>>96291485
I mean, ofc, you can't use RBG + black/white paints for everything and having triads for all main colors would be ideal, but, as I said, a statter of like 16 paints where you get like 2 shades of each color is more than enough and simply using black/white for creating additional shades for them will give you great results. Over time you'll definetly get those moments where you will go "ah shit, I need some really bright orange that I just can't mix with red+yellow", and then you'll buy it the next time you go to LGS. Your collection will naturally expand, as will your skill to actually use it.

Inceasingly I feel that my cheapskate nature which decided to buy Vallejo at the start is 90% of why I advanced as successfully as I did as a painter.

I'm not gonna just contrast slop my mini's, however there are some paints which look very good on Tzeentch-stuff so I went for it. I'm gonna use both normal and contrast. That's the plan.

Oh, I assumed you meant on a car.
Uuum. Yeah. I've had some problems getting it to lay on car paints without beading up, but you could probably get a paint consistency right for it to work, it will scratch off really easily though.
You'd want to test stuff first but I would maybe try an approach like
>candy red
>matte car paint
>acrylic details
>gloss varnish
>brush matte varnish on anything not supposed to be shiny
and you would minimize your adhesion issues.
You can probably also just do a candy finish with acrylics, do like a metallic and then spray some transparent red filter over it and gloss varnish it. Though the metallic base definitely won't be as nice as a lacquer metallic paint you would find in car paints.

3d prints are cheap if your etsy seler is not a dick, so you can always buy another one and paint it better with what you have learnt with the first one if you really like the model and want a good display piece

NTA, but on this topic I'm thinking about finding some simple-ish 1/10 scale, and 75mm models and just paying a resin printer person to do like a plate full of as many as they can of that same 1 or 2 models. It'll probably be cheaper than buying them individually, and what I want is a bunch of the same resin model to practice stuff on without feeling like I need to paint it to the highest standard, so like sketching, lighting practice, not so much blending and fine detail stuff because then I'd also be able to re-prime and just use them again for that kind of thing.
But right now as it stands a lot of my figures are from indie sellers and not super easy to get all the time let alone for a low price, so I feel locked into not experimenting with them much because they HAVE to be at least reasonably good by the end.

Thanks for reading my blog.

Depends on the car paint. Usually, yes. Itโ€™s what plenty of us do by using mr. color as a base layer. Mr. Color paints are acrylic lacquers very similar to what was used in the auto industry between the late 70s and 90s.
Maybe you will have problems if you use polyester car paints as they can be a bit hydrophobic which causes certain paints (looking at you, pro acryl) to not behave very well.
Just donโ€™t use automotive bicomponent varnishes if you plan to paint anything over it. They are way too glossy.

Single pigment paints mix quite intuitively, but the unmixed paints can only ever be the same shade as the physical pigment it's made with, in various strengths, so there are colours that can only be achieved by mixing pigments. Colour matched paints are always formulated with a mix of pigments often three, which means that when you mix a colour matched blue with a colour matched red it's not like mixing a blue and red pigment, because there is another 4 pigments in the mix, and when you mix a bunch of pigments the end result tends to look muddy. It's worse the more paints you add to the mix.
I've seen it with vallejo and ak (my most used brands), but it really varies with the colour. No brand is immune, unless it's a single pigment brand.

Auto paints donโ€™t cover that thick. They are 2-3x thicker then proper hobby paints, but they are usually fine most of the times with minimal detail loss. If you use GW paints, the difference will not be noticeable.

single pigments are more for high saturations of specific hue's, right? (there are other reasons like consistency of colors, but in terms of their value over mixed paints you can buy, like Payne's Grey is nice but you could make it if you needed to) You can lighten/darken anything with white/black, you can desaturate with grey or complementary colors, but you can't saturate more. A CYM mix can't be as saturated as a dedicated high saturation teal pigment, though could in theory replicate lesser saturated pure pigments perfectly fine.

They don't necessarily have 'barrels' but they do have holes at the tip. GW would drill all their things but it's mold and kit dependent, if the gun is 1 piece they can't really have the barrels drilled, you only see that on guns where the tip/barrel are attached as a second piece, or the gun is in 2 halves.

As for it being โ€œmold and kit dependentโ€, I think that is bullshit. I make some tamiya kits from the 1970s and they come with pre-drilled barrels. They are a lot thicker, but Iโ€™m sure that is no longer a problem after 50 years of technological development.

Oh yeah, for sure. Japan can do it, but GW sticks to 2 part molds. I think there are some kids with 3 part molds, but it starts to get a lot more expensive, I think there are *some* that GW did with pre-drilled barrels in the side of the sprue, but GW just went down the 'design the kits around it' rather than improving their mold technologies. Meanwhile bandai is injection molding multi-part friction fit movable parts already assembled on a single sprue.

If it's stuck in the paint, well then don't paint it when covered in dust and carpet fibers, brush them off before that.
You'll never keep them un-dusty if they are just out in the open though, you need a dust free cabinet or some other kind of enclosure/case for them.

I'm hoping the varnish will get ride of that pretty nasty line on the arm against the chest. She didn't actually know about how washes worked on minis (I didn't realize, or else I'd have told her sooner), so she was trying to do all the shading manually.

First off, I'm having to nitpick because it does look really good, anon, you should be proud of it. You let the wash pool a little too much on his left elbow. It distracts from the otherwise smooth blue. The turquoise of the serpent needs more highlighting. The red at the feather's base matches too closely with the face; some highlighting on the face would improve that. The stone could use a hit of green wash to give it more of a 'mossy' look. Lastly, you might want to add some brighter lines here and there to add some texture to the feathers themselves.

As far as how to base it? Maybe make it swampy, glowy, radioactive jungle that the Skaven have been fowling up.

Thanks. I could certainly mix up a bit of my brightest jade color and hit some of the upper and outer areas.
Would a green shade by itself do that to the stone? I feel like it might just end up muddy at this point unless I did more. Maybe stipple a bit of a medium dark green on parts along with a wash?
I did try to paint in texture on the feathers; it's visible in the darker picture. But it's not terribly visible and I should have pushed it brighter. I was running out of brighter colors to use.

totally budget dependent. I advocate for starting with a solid set of paints to start because what happens is you'll buy your minimum paint set for the scheme you want, and then realize you don't have green and you needed to paint a stupid leaf on your base or something. So I do like sets like that one in theory.
But also if it isn't an easy in-budget purchase then it definitely makes sense to get fewer paints that you know you need and just expand as necessary.

They were very hard to get. Even the Warhammer Citadel sold out fairly quickly by lunch time, and this is with a "one per person" policy in place.

I only got the one, so he's gonna stay here forever... along with the First Edition Captain with Terminator Honours (the original Centos) and the "middle" version GW did for the 100th NA store.

>Also how many 'new' projects do you actively have in progress right now?
Three, counting Centos.

Since the Death Company is done and the Secret Santa Intercessor Squad is good enough for the tabletop, I'm gonna do a Callidus Assassin and the free Blood Claw GW gave away as the mini of the month for August.

So I was teaching my gf how to use the air brush, so she can use it to finish her old world or aos army. After teaching her how to use it I saw a beast of nurgle on my desk.

What do you guys think?

>Jade
Ever since they started adding Cathay as a thing, it's bolstered my thoughts that the ornamental stones the Lizardmen use is actually turquoise, rather than jade. It makes sense to me, considering that jade is a very 'even' colored stone most often, whereas turquoise is varied and eccentric. Considering the propensity for the Lizardmen to use ancient magic, it seems like it would be the most thematic stone.

Picrel: Chaco Canyon and Anasazi turquoise crafts gathered from historical sites.

Oh shit, no wonder these ogres are triggering deep nostalgia. I just googled Battlemasters. That was my favourite boardgame as a kid. I forced all the other kids to play it with me. Was it a warhammer knock off? I always just figured it was some warhammer game when I thought back about it. Fuck I wonder if it's still sitting somewhere at my parent's place. I wanna paint those minis if she hasn't thrown them out.

Like Space Crusade, Battlemasters was a joint project between Games Workshop and Milton Bradley. That's why so many of the things in it look and feel like Warhammer models of the time ... just in mass-produced cheap plastic instead of metal.

It was such a good idea. They need an affordable and successful gateway game like this again. It'd go a long way trying to get your friends into the hobby. I feel like they have a couple of things close to it in the AoS space, but they still look expensive as shit.

I think Darktide got a boardgame actually that just uses GW models. I bet when you work out the cost though, the models are shitty older models that they are charging more for.

GW constantly puts out "gateway" games at Target and Barnes and Noble: Space Marine, Doomsday Countdown, Crypt Hunters, Space Marine Adventures, Dawn of War: Onslaught, Combat Arena, Blitz Bowl, and yes, the Darktide boardgame.

Because they already have the molds for all the models, Citadel just fills in whatever is needed for a particular game, and you can get some interesting and otherwise hard-to-find models with a trip to the board game section at one of those other retailers.

I think this is a deceptively complex question. I agree that single pigments are good for achieving high saturation of that single hue, and that can be hard to impossible to achieve with a mix. But colour matching low saturation pigments also isn't always possible. It would be true if you had a decent selection of pigments to choose from all over the colour space, but you don't, there are some colours with fewer options than others. I don't know, I'm not that experienced with single pigments as a painter, but I did formulate paints for several years so I might have a strong engineer's bias here.
Payne's Grey is not a single pigment, I don't know if that was your point, or if you're making the opposite point.

I think it needs stronger highlights on the back to better separate the more knobbly texture from the smooth skin. The gold is dark and flat, it would also be better with sharper highlights. The feathers grab all the attention, which might be your intention, but if it isn't the face might warrant a brighter colour. Finally you've got some spots with pooling/staining.
Overall it's a very nice model you should be proud of, I kind of want to paint Seraphon myself now.

When it comes to improving my painting I need to work on key areas:

Blending and colour theory, I like to try and paint in the old forge world/current heresy style. What resources are best for learning to blend but more importantly colour theory?

Also, what do you think of my death guard attempt heresy wise? This is before oils.

Look up general art tutorials on the subject on youtube. No need to stay within the narrow confines of mini painting for that one. Blending is not really something you can learn from a video.. the basics are really basic, and you probably already know them. The rest is practice.
