Enjoy your game night baker san
I can never remember, after you've layered, when you're doing transitions between them, do you glaze/stipple light to dark or dark to light? Or does it not matter?
>>96282348I glaze dark, just because darker paints usually have more transparency when thinned thus making it easier to glaze. Also find its easier to tint/stain a lighter basecoat under than the other way round. But no hard and fast rules, I glaze and stipple light colors all the time
>>96282348>What, you're sayin' that I'll be able to blend my layers with glazing or stippling? No, Neo. I'm saying that when you're good enough at layering... you won't have to.
Muh air brush game getting betterโer
Here's a mostly done pic of my version of the free model of the month, just applied transfers, gonna try and enter it in the store competition later. It's a Space Wolf Blood Claw, but I decided to paint it as Wolfspear and use the old transfer sheet for the chapter that came in an issue of White Dwarf.
Most of the armour was airbrushed to a base coat of Army Painter Air Uniform Grey, then their Shark White, then Liquitex White Ink, then a brush-on couple of coats of Gryph-Charger Grey mixed 1:1 with Contrast Medium, gives it that really nice grey-ish blue-ish tone.
I've found a problem with airbrushing colours on like this is that when I need to fix mistakes, it can be hard to recreate the exact blending, so maybe a pure all brush recipe would have been better.
I left the backpack off for painting, it made a nice enough difference but probably not worth it for rank and file models.
I'm not sure if I like the transfer on the right knee, feels too artificial, not really right, (maybe both the red and pure white pull the viewer's eyes away too much?) but the little transfer on the forehead came out looking really neato, it adds so much to the model I'm really surprised.
>>96282769You can paint over tranfers to blend them into the model better. Just use the same colour to rough up the edges a bit and add some scratches.
>>96282769Your white still has a bit of texture, so do the black pauldrons. Should've probably thinned a touch more. If I squint my eyes enough I can also see the edge of that knee transfer. My advice would be to varnish the entire thing to unify all the surfaces and smooth out the decal edges at the same time. Edge highlights could be a bit neater. If you have an airbrush I'd highly recommend you try doing some basic volumetrics/zenithal highlights of your main basecoat. It adds a lot of depth to a mini for very little effort. Oh and there's a tiny overspill on his "collar".
But I'm being picky because you said you're submitting it to a competition so I assumed you want some feedback. It looks nice, the scheme is solid and I like the soft shading on his leg. You're right about the decal on his forehead and I'm very impressed how you drilled the barrel exactly at the center.
Literally had an anxious dream about forgetting to paint some bits on a model.
>>96282979Did you remember to check the model after waking up?
>>96283056I already know what it was, I forgot to drybrush a bit before varnishing the mini
>>96282979True story.
I was just batch painting some skitarii, and while I was doing some grey bits I noted that I missed 2 purity seals on them, and then when I tried to find them again I could only fine 1. I triple checked them and still can't find another one, but I guarantee I'm going to find it again at the least convenient time possible.
Throwing in for a lot of speed paint stuff which brand should I roll with?
>>96283285AP speed paints all behave the same. They cover, flow, mix, dry, and pool the same. Black, white, orange, yellow, purple, brown, green, etc. No matter the color, no matter the hue, they all behave the same.
That also means they all have the same pluses and minuses so when you know how to handle one, you can handle them all. Contrast paints vary pretty dramatically, even the same color but different hues.
AP has one of the largest pallete ranges of speed paints and even their metallics perform like the other speed paints they just don't really do the whole shading difference so they still need a wash. Not having to learn a different technique for metallics is pretty substantial though.
>>96283273>>96283306some people swear by vallejo and some by armypainter but most likely everyone started with citadel back in the day
is there some cool factor involved with not using citadel for anything these days
>>96283359It's pretty cool to not overpay for an inferior product, yes
>>96282783You can also use lahmian medium (or any medium of your preference) to paint over them, making them a lot duller, similar to the paint underneath.
>>96283273Don't be a brandfag, get individual paints you prefer.
>>96283409Yeah that's a good idea. Or a matte varnish.
>>96283359even 20 yeras ago in 2005, it was common to say "fuck citadel pots, get vallejo droppers"
i'd bet even older grogs could go back to 1995

>>96283512pretty cool chassis coloring idea there anon
looking good so far
>>96283359It's literally twice the price, yet is not better in quality and comes in inferior pots.
>>96283400>>96283457>>96283558their yellows and whites have always been little here and there but i thought older pots were just fine
one could argue dropper bottles are even more wasteful than this new line of citadel pots, both have their own learning curve
>reading local scale modeller forums about what airbrush to get
>get mostly the usual recommendations (fengda as a budget choice, h&s evolution/infinity as premium)
>there is also this boomer who says he has been using an airbrush made in Nazi Germany in the 30s, and, as such, is twenty years older than him
>people ask for a photo

>>96283638Holy, that is really cool. I wonder how good that thing is.
>>96283625>just fineJust fine is not worth twice the price.
>dropper bottles are even more wastefulHow?
>>96283667people seem to buy paint more than ever these days, hell most complaints you hear are that some people have too much paint to know what to do with them
it has even sparked this new cool thing about mixing your own colors from base paints
> twice the priceis it really such an issue for an article you might buy maybe once a month
>Howi remember plenty of complaining about burping and something about bubbles
>>96283881>i remember plenty of complaining about burping and something about bubblesanon have you ever used dropper bottles in your life?
Does anybody know a good source for little Chinese or generic Asian basing bits/small scenery?
I'm building a Cathay Sentinel and I want some stuff on his base, but all the little gewgaws I have are too European
Finished last night just in time to play.
There are a few pieces I didn't finish, but I may take a break from Blood Bowl for a model or two.
I did notice I missed the Anubii teeth, though.
>>96283923great looking models and those little sticker are pretty nifty invention
care to show us your pitch
>>96283650honestly it should be good, while they may not had the precission manufacturing we have today, in the 30's tools were still made to last a lifetime, not to replace them every few years
>>96283650>>96283966Considering he was painting really small train models with it, I would say it was probably pretty good.
>>96283959I only have the base game board. I'd like to make a custom board, but I don't know how to coordinate bases with a full board
>>96283359Citadel paints aren't worse or better in acrylics, but they are more expensive and pots are bad.
For speed paints they are highly inconsistent and outright bad for around half their line.
>>96283929I still love how you did the skin for those guys. Looks so cool.
>>96283625>one could argue dropper bottles are even more wasteful than this new line of citadel potsone would be retarded to do that
What model is this?
Also what scale?
>>96283973it looks that model line is still being made
https://harderairbrush.com/pages/ab-grafo
>>96284105huh, that's very cool. Speaks loudly about the design quality, too.
First ever try at basing like this, any words of advice?
I filed down a bunch of them so they're irregular/round to simulate limestone with lighter colours, while the very regular and square ones would be a mix of gray (basalt) and shades of brown (porphyry)
Initially I wanted to plop down some astrogranite as a base and in-between gaps, but now I'm starting to think it would end up being too messy at this scale
>>96284102https://www.etsy.com/listing/1726083261/3d-resin-printed-jaina-proudmoore-model
Could probably be found for much cheaper, but it's a start
>>96284131I was just looking for a name. Thank you anon
So.. Many.. Soulstones...
>>96284131They look too spaced away and a bit too thick. I'd try to sand them down and cut the edges poking out of the base.
I know it's a cheap easy solution but I don't like cobblestone sprues in general
>>96284278Oh ye the stuff poking out has been taken care of, I just needed to push them together a bit more
I unironically really like this kinda diy stuff, I could easily use green stuff + roller but I like fucking around and experimenting like this

>>96284278theyre fine and there is no rule about scenic bases going over the rim

New to the hobby. I'm using a wet palette and a cheap brush with warpaints fanatic paints. I think I'm thinking my paints right, but I am struggling to get an even, smooth coat of paint. I keep getting splotchy/uneven coverage, even after 3-4 layers of paint. Am I doing something wrong, or do I just need to keep adding more layers? How long should I be letting each later dry?
>>96284459basically you just have to get a feel for it and you will get it eventually
dont lay it on too thin or too thick just so it covers nicely
>>96284459reds are usually more transaprent than other paints, painting red on black is a bad idea
try starting on a brown, purple or darker red for the first coat or two, and then move to the red you want, that way you can also use that first coat as a shadow
for reference i do my reds on a brown primer
black primer without a zenital is a meme most of the time anyways, makes basecoats way harder for no reason, try priming brown or a neutral gray next time, even offwhite if you want really bright colors
it also depends on the paintjob you are going for, it can be ok to prime black black templars for example
>>96284755did you varnish it in the middle of painting just for the fun of it
>>96284792No, why? Just fixed skin section after washing.
>>96284805Cool, off to white section now then.
>>96284755Is she wearing an anchor pendant, or is it just some shading artifact?
>>96284905She does but it's so small that when I tried to paint it, I would constantly smear around instead. Since she is 3D print and I picked smallest option, I assume that in scaled up version like 15cm one, it's much easier to take out. I'm not that good, however.
>>96283881>is it really such an issue for an article you might buy maybe once a month Why would I pay double if I don't have to? There's zero reason to do this.
>burping and something about bubblesNever even heard of these issues.

>>96285810Get back to it dude, for yourself anyways. Have fun with it thats an "Enano chingon" as they say.
Finished Jaina. Sort of - I think I fucked up blue (phone does not show it properly but there are visible brush strokes), tried to salvage with sponge and glazing over it but I'm not really satisfied.
And back view. Still have to do her base, however.
>>96285868yeah blue looks like shite ngl
for bigger minis an airbrush is mandatory for a smooth finish IMO
>>96285868also
>lips are not the same color as the skin, dude>eyebrows???>hair looks unpainted>white clothing isnt actually 'just white'>did you forget also to paint the buckles on her corset?like, come on now
>>96285868Do you want really specific feedback or are you just trying to wrap this up now?
>>96285925Don't really know, I feel like shit now. Feedback is always good, however.
>>96285901And how you would airbrush around those gold details? I would assume that in this case, brush was mandatory instead.
>>96285912I'm not good enough for eyebrows or lips. Hair might look overblown on photo but it is white-grey with white highlights. Tried painting buckles but it went messy so I paint it over with leather shade, applied wash and left it like this.
>>96285962>I'm not good enough for eyebrows or lipsbig models like the one you are working on are ideal for practicing
keep at it and good luck
>>96283881>Burping and bubblesNever encountered any issues with literally hundreds of dropper bottles of paints.
Pots are just fucking dumb design because it exposes paint to air for an extended time if using the well in the caps or they are a bigger bitch to transfer to a wet pallet if you go that route. GW knows this and won't change shit because they hate their consumers. All they have to do is offer the same paint in dropper bottles to let the market decide but they won't because "Fuck 'Em" is the company motto.
>>96283889>>96284965>>96286085none of you seriously have no recollection of that 2 year long vallejo dropper bottle bubble debate

>>96286454damn that asian catgirl is cute
>>96286454Nice regardless, godspeed bro
>>96286454I also like the foxgirl. that's a lot of clothing fold practice
>>96285868I think it looks nice, there's definitely room for improvement but overall it delivers. Bigger sculpts are not always easier to deal with as the larger areas will be harder to fill out- both to create visual interest and because there's more room for mistakes.
That said, you can always go back and work on it if you want it to be fancier, you can try and do something to make those white dress trims interesting, smooth out the skin transitions, paint those buckles etc
By the way I think the staff crystal looks quite nice.
>>96286604What exactly would you propose about improving white part of clothes?
>>96286454I didn't know any games actually used 75mm figures beyond that one failed inquisitor specialist game from gw (IIRC)
He's legged now, gonna start working on the base so I can get all the feet level. I got a box of battlefield trophies on my last trip to GW, so show me /yourdudes/ if you wanna get featured on the base.
>>96286758Maybe I would have tried to make the gradient of the white dress go darker towards the bottom, but keep the recesses of the trim lighter
Much easier said than done, of course, Im just brainstorming
>>96284459Yeah your red is way too bright to go on black. You need to work your way up to that with layers. Either a darker red or a purple is what I normally do.
>>96286815he looks very nice and like the small tactical rock
put a pink tyranid in there somewhere
>>96285868My main issue is with her face. At that scale you need to dot her irises with black so she doesn't look blind, also go look at some makeup tutorials and doll her up. And take your hobby knife and carefully scrape off that paint booger on her chin.
>>96286918The rock is a complete placeholder by now. I have it magnetized so I have to have something raised on there for when he's in maulerfiend mode.
>>96285810>Haven't painted in 2 years>Still in /wip/Fucking king
>>96286144That was Vallejo fucking up their paints and had nothing to do with the bottles.
It's like saying all glass bottles are bad for drinks because one drink maker spiked their beverage with meth for month and they used glass bottles, so just stick with drinking fluids from bags.
>>96285962I didn't have time to put together like step by step things for all of it yet and I have to leave, but here's my total recommendation pic, and details on the face to follow.
>>96287079I just realized the first eye step pic also includes the eyelashes from step 3 by mistake. Just pretend they aren't there. And there are probably spelling mistakes.
Also obviously this is just a paint-over, and predicated on having some sharp brushes and good brush control, but at this scale this should all be pretty achievable.
Nearly done, only a couple details, some cleanup and the base left
>>96282078>Enjoy your game night baker sanThanks!
TLDR: Got the 200th store US swag, including Centos. Had a game. Lost, but had a blast playing!
I was pretty sure my opponent and I had agreed to meet at the Warhammer Store in Denton, as I knew the Citadel would be slammed. I got to Denton early, got the 200th store swag (including Centos), and got a message from my opponent that he was on his way. Sat down to chat with the other ladz, expecting my opponent to come in at any moment, then received a message: "I got us a table!"
No, you didn't. I'm here, and none of other the people in this building are you. Wait... are you at the Citadel?
Yes, he had gone to the Citadel. They were indeed swamped, with a double file line wrapped all around the store. They sold out of all their goodies, but we did indeed have a table, and did indeed have a game after I made it down there, and it was a ton of fun.
Wish I could play more often!
>>96283959"Skinks are about as stupid as you can get! Every time I played against them, they thought that I was an opponent... when, in fact, it was THEM!"
>>96287079The eyes yes, but do not do that to the face. That unnatural contoured make up never looked good.
>>96287166In any case, the T-zone area and cheeks need to be highlighted and the lips/eyebrows done.
>>96287181Sure, but keep the features rounded and smooth if you're aiming for beauty.
Getting around to painting an old project of mine
>>96287385You can really tell what the sculptor was putting their time into with this one.
>>96287454The gloves and the teeth?
gotta higlight then base then done. i really like the scheme from the movie. i may just paint all of them like this. ill finish the other test schemes but damn.
before i finish this guy, any advice on edge highlighting small straps? i cant get enough paint on the fine tip brushes. cant get it to come off without pooling. mabe painting it light then down the middle with the darker colour
>>96285028>>96286144I paint with dropper bottles constantly. For you to get 'burping' or 'bubbles' you would need to be using your dropper bottle fundamentally and demonstrably wrong; this is basic fluid physics at work. You should be holding your dropper bottle 180 degrees inverted or close to that, waiting a whole second before squeezing to extract drops of paint and apply pressure slowly to ensure you get the right amount out of the bottle.
For you to get burping or bubbles you would need to either have basically no paint left in the bottle or be holding it at a severe angle close to horizontal. Air bubbles don't exist in a fluid down the bottom, unless you've somehow fucking carbonated your dropper bottles.

>is it possible that a drop of IPA or airbrush flow improver might "cut" the bubbles? I get the same from my white ink If I can solve that problem I can save a couple of hundred bucks

>>96288566>>96288573Pretty solid effort; only thing I have to contribute is maybe consider hitting the exposed bone with a different wash to give them a bit more dimensionality since they look a bit flat and it's hard to see all the detail present.
What didn't you enjoy about them? I'm not a fan myself for several reasons but I especially find their modern models to be onerous to paint. I prefer the older stuff like what you have mostly because I like the modularity contrasted by the more recent monopose stuff they do.
>>96288650I didn't like how I had to paint and assemble them in parts.
Hey guys. I'm working on a used B-25J Mitchell bomber kit and just realized that the previous owner made a modification. He removed the two gunner windows on each side and left some pretty ugly cuts. Any advice on patching it up to make the hull look smooth again? Might be tough since the cuts curve a little around the bend. The sections he removed aren't in the box either so I'd have to get creative.
>>96288566>>96288573Graveguard are kind of tricky. I bought a bunch years ago and only painted one. I use the rest to practice stuff on, which is wild considering how much they cost. Like this poor guy has been used to test UV resin, OSL, leather, transparent paints and some other shit over the years.
>>96288663Not something I've had to deal with much in any context, let alone GW stuff but I also almost exclusively go for the models that are least likely to make me ragequit. Subassembly painting does sound like a pain in the ass though.
>>96288713All I can think of is to turn it into a terrain piece now. Turn the cuts into battle damage and paint it as a crashed plane. I'm sure some putty and sanding would fix that though. Never tried it, but people sculpt their own shit here, so something that should be possible.
>>96288863Thanks but it's sadly not for me. My little nephew asked me to build it for him.
>putty and sandingYeah that sounds like the way to go. The section is suppose to be rounded and I'm not sure how to do that well. At worst I might just leave it a flat surface if I can't sculpt it properly. Maybe I should press something round against it before it hardens or something like that.
>>96288888You can sculpt or sand round edges into stuff just fine. Get some milliput and play around with it and you'll see how easy it is to get round surfaces.
>>96288713Glue in a sheet of plasticard, use filler putty, sand smooth, add lines back
So how do you go about doing a zenithal prime when it's windy outside? I've been waiting for "perfect weather" to prime my shit for months but it's always either windy, rainy, or smoky due to wildfires. I can't do this shit indoors either because I live in an apartment with other people.

There are some gaps in the range - they lack a pure white and pure black for instance, and their metallic paints are generally poor - but they're more consistent than something like vallejo.
I use vallejo for the black, AK for the white, Metal n Alchemy for the metallic and GW for the rest.

>>96289612The transition between the rectus abdominus and linea alba, that is the high points of the abdominal muscles and the lower points, is too severe. In addition the two flesh tones you've chosen are so far apart that it reads more as they've gotten sunburnt in very weird areas or have a skin condition. My advice is to go over all of the flesh tones and blend a bit more from where the light flesh meets the dusky tones and tie it all together with a very light skin toned wash. Notice how in attached pic the skin is a uniform tone at the high and low points. You want to emulate that while still maintaining some difference between them so that it reads moreso as defined muscles with slight shadows in recesses.

Ok, so further research of the Vallejo bubble issue is curious. I don't trust Reddit for advice on anything because people there are stir crazy.
I'm annoyed because I always supported their products and some of the advice is really vague.

This video is a little clearer, essentialy I gather
>a sable brush with a good tip is less likely to be an issue because of its shape or somesuch>the paints, even the xpress are thin but should potentially be thinned and layered more>they should be shaken gently but the don't need it as much as other paintshttps://youtu.be/qkGtmSNR_Jk?feature=shared
Sorry to shit up the thread because I'm just an amateur but I wonder if I can resolve it. I have been using art store brushes so it could be a factor?
>>96289017I would drybrush bone or grey then white over black.
>>96289823Anon, if you truly are an amateur like you claim so, stop fixating on a literal non-issue. I don't mean this in a wrong way, but your painting skills are not good enough to care about things like this (neither are mine). We ain't painting for a scale model competition/golden demon/whatever. Just enjoy the process, and if some paints REALLY do give you trouble, just get a different ones once you run out.
>>96289975Well, I want to not have splotchy glossy finishes if I can manage it. I might only do the odd highlightor wash and I don't do every fine detail but ye gods I care about the finish. Especially even with just 3 or 4 xpress colour paints, the smoother the sketch the happier I am right?

Vallejo only bubbles if you mix it as if you were stirring food like a retard.
Simple as.
Speaking of Vallejo paints, has anyone used their fluorescent paints? This shit has the consistency of glue, it's so bizarre. I don't really understand how you're supposed to paint with it. If you mix it into any other paint, it hardly changes the colour but does change the consistency of the whole mixture to glue. I kept adding water to try and thin it and all it did was start to make squelching sounds when I mixed it.
>>96290195I tend to overthin it with water and apply multiple thin layers over solid base like silver. But yeah, they are odd. You can see on this guy cockpit glass that it was clearly pooling during the painting (how it was not covering edges at all was intentional effect).

>>96287072Seems like a good post to (you) for my question - how do I actually paint large white fabrics? I skated by until now by painting off-white or only needing tiny true-white details, but now I need to paint fabric that is majority pure-white like Jaina's dress here. For now, my tactic was to start with dark grey and build up, but the top levels of pure white are super transparent and cover poorly, leading to an almost textured feeling. Also in general I found white to feel super chalky and needing to thin it more than other paints as otherwise it feels like I'm drawing with a pencil. Is airbrush the only way here? Or am I om the right track and just need 20 layers of superthin white glaze?
>>96290195Might be time to try thinning with something else. Denatured alcohol, isopropanol, windshield wiper fluid, Vallejo's airbrush thinner...
So I unmolded the dwarf statue I cast a few days ago, and as I feared, it came out pretty bubbly.
I was able to fix the worst of it with spackle, but it still looks a bit worm-eaten (which is fine; as I said, it's going into a ruin anyway). Still, I'm encouraged enough to keep at it, and the the smaller test pieces I cast (including some shells and some rocks) came out perfectly.
Hey /wip/,
I have three questions for you:
1. Do you guys recommend any good basing materials? I've been using Vallejo's ground texture but I'm looking at AK's different diorama textures instead. I want a more even and realistic earth and desert compared to what the vallejo ground texture gives me.
2. Which grass tufts and basing material companies do you recommend? I'm looking for realistic and detailed tufts and shrubberies. Been using a mix of a small company and Gamer's grass so far, I like Gamer's Grass but I'm wondering if there are even better makers with more options.
3. Any good video tutorials or walk-throughs on inks and weathering powders?
Thanks!

Obviously I'm too new and inexperienced (and need to paint a whole army) to mix and match so I bought ready paints. Doesn't help that the army I decided on is very colorful (and that's a good thing).

Little question about varnishes - Vallejo "Mecha Color" matte one is quite durable and have pretty good matte finish but when I try to use it straight from bottle, it ends up with visible brush strokes. When I thin it with Vallejo thinner (either normal or airbrush one), it helps in this aspect but also makes layer more glossy (I noticed that Vallejo thinner also make other paints glossy when added). What could I use instead?

Over time you'll definetly get those moments where you will go "ah shit, I need some really bright orange that I just can't mix with red+yellow", and then you'll buy it the next time you go to LGS. Uuum. Yeah. I've had some problems getting it to lay on car paints without beading up, but you could probably get a paint consistency right for it to work, it will scratch off really easily though.
You'd want to test stuff first but I would maybe try an approach like
>candy red>matte car paint>acrylic details>gloss varnish>brush matte varnish on anything not supposed to be shinyand you would minimize your adhesion issues.
You can probably also just do a candy finish with acrylics, do like a metallic and then spray some transparent red filter over it and gloss varnish it. Though the metallic base definitely won't be as nice as a lacquer metallic paint you would find in car paints.

It'll probably be cheaper than buying them individually, and what I want is a bunch of the same resin model to practice stuff on without feeling like I need to paint it to the highest standard, so like sketching, lighting practice, not so much blending and fine detail stuff because then I'd also be able to re-prime and just use them again for that kind of thing.
But right now as it stands a lot of my figures are from indie sellers and not super easy to get all the time let alone for a low price, so I feel locked into not experimenting with them much because they HAVE to be at least reasonably good by the end.

Maybe you will have problems if you use polyester car paints as they can be a bit hydrophobic which causes certain paints (looking at you, pro acryl) to not behave very well.

>>96291652Single pigment paints mix quite intuitively, but the unmixed paints can only ever be the same shade as the physical pigment it's made with, in various strengths, so there are colours that can only be achieved by mixing pigments. Colour matched paints are always formulated with a mix of pigments often three, which means that when you mix a colour matched blue with a colour matched red it's not like mixing a blue and red pigment, because there is another 4 pigments in the mix, and when you mix a bunch of pigments the end result tends to look muddy. It's worse the more paints you add to the mix.
I've seen it with vallejo and ak (my most used brands), but it really varies with the colour. No brand is immune, unless it's a single pigment brand.
>>96292541Small nicely painted though
>>96292519Auto paints donโt cover that thick. They are 2-3x thicker then proper hobby paints, but they are usually fine most of the times with minimal detail loss. If you use GW paints, the difference will not be noticeable.
>>96292945single pigments are more for high saturations of specific hue's, right? (there are other reasons like consistency of colors, but in terms of their value over mixed paints you can buy, like Payne's Grey is nice but you could make it if you needed to) You can lighten/darken anything with white/black, you can desaturate with grey or complementary colors, but you can't saturate more. A CYM mix can't be as saturated as a dedicated high saturation teal pigment, though could in theory replicate lesser saturated pure pigments perfectly fine.

>>96293153I see, I will l drill them, then.
As for it being โmold and kit dependentโ, I think that is bullshit. I make some tamiya kits from the 1970s and they come with pre-drilled barrels. They are a lot thicker, but Iโm sure that is no longer a problem after 50 years of technological development.
>>96293300Oh yeah, for sure. Japan can do it, but GW sticks to 2 part molds. I think there are some kids with 3 part molds, but it starts to get a lot more expensive, I think there are *some* that GW did with pre-drilled barrels in the side of the sprue, but GW just went down the 'design the kits around it' rather than improving their mold technologies. She didn't actually know about how washes worked on minis (I didn't realize, or else I'd have told her sooner), so she was trying to do all the shading manually.
>>96293387go look at good bandai kit, the details are miles ahead gw, look at any 1:72 star wars ship for example, they even make 3 colors on the same sprue, and translucent ones
they are so much better it's not even funny
or look at this random korean sprue, it is actually a 3 part mold with 'drilled' barrels, the other thing is a gw rocket launcher bit

>>96293618I don't disagree with your point generally but the details on the picture you posted show up way more clearly on the gw rocket launcher bit
>>96293628you mean they read better because they are chunkier, yeah sure, we can argue if gw kits 'need' smaller details for their designed purpose
the korean one is also 1:35 scale of a real weapon
>>96293957Good work not keeping him to sell on ebay later.
Also how many 'new' projects do you actively have in progress right now?
All done. Just needs basing. If anyone has any basing suggestions I'll take them because I'm not very good at it.
Also criticize the hell out of it.
>>96294028First off, I'm having to nitpick because it does look really good, anon, you should be proud of it. You let the wash pool a little too much on his left elbow. It distracts from the otherwise smooth blue. The turquoise of the serpent needs more highlighting. The red at the feather's base matches too closely with the face; some highlighting on the face would improve that. The stone could use a hit of green wash to give it more of a 'mossy' look. Lastly, you might want to add some brighter lines here and there to add some texture to the feathers themselves.
As far as how to base it? Maybe make it swampy, glowy, radioactive jungle that the Skaven have been fowling up.
>>96294070Thanks. I could certainly mix up a bit of my brightest jade color and hit some of the upper and outer areas.
Would a green shade by itself do that to the stone? I feel like it might just end up muddy at this point unless I did more. Maybe stipple a bit of a medium dark green on parts along with a wash?
I did try to paint in texture on the feathers; it's visible in the darker picture. But it's not terribly visible and I should have pushed it brighter. I was running out of brighter colors to use.
is this overkill for a paint set? i have a lot of rando minis, so i figure a good set like this would help me actually paint them all instead of mixing primaries
>>96294181totally budget dependent. I advocate for starting with a solid set of paints to start because what happens is you'll buy your minimum paint set for the scheme you want, and then realize you don't have green and you needed to paint a stupid leaf on your base or something. So I do like sets like that one in theory.
But also if it isn't an easy in-budget purchase then it definitely makes sense to get fewer paints that you know you need and just expand as necessary.
>>96292742That's some nice sculpting anon
>>96294181If you really want to sploosh for a big set like this, get one from AK. Infinitely better, consistent paints.
>>96294202i use a small set of artist acrylics for my painting and can pretty much get any color i want but the more minis i collect the more i procrastinate on mixing the colors. i figure having some quick colors i can splash on would make it quicker for me to clear out my backlog
>>96293980>Good work not keeping him to sell on ebay later. They were very hard to get. Even the Warhammer Citadel sold out fairly quickly by lunch time, and this is with a "one per person" policy in place.
I only got the one, so he's gonna stay here forever... along with the First Edition Captain with Terminator Honours (the original Centos) and the "middle" version GW did for the 100th NA store.
>Also how many 'new' projects do you actively have in progress right now?Three, counting Centos.
Since the Death Company is done and the Secret Santa Intercessor Squad is good enough for the tabletop, I'm gonna do a Callidus Assassin and the free Blood Claw GW gave away as the mini of the month for August.
>>96294181Ehh, I wouldnt. I'd rather buy individual bottles or smaller kits from different brands to expand you horizons. Locking yourself into one ecosystem โ even a good one โ is never optimal.
>>96294311that makes sense but is more expensive
>>96294323Only slightly. The discount on these sets is not meaningful. Well, at least not where I live, where I only get a 5-10% discount.
And you can recoup some of that by buying smaller sets if you want.
Excuse my phone postingโฆ.
Just got back to painting after about 10ish years out of the hobby. These guys need a wash but Iโm a bit afraid to ruin the base coats by splotching them up. Iโm very very out of practice
>>96294464Welcome back.
fyi they are missing their arms.

>>96294181I bought this set to start. Pretty good variety, but it lacks a lot of highlight and shade colours
So I was teaching my gf how to use the air brush, so she can use it to finish her old world or aos army. After teaching her how to use it I saw a beast of nurgle on my desk.

It's lovely. Although there are some gaps that should have been filed before painting. The eyes are funny, they make him look like a nightmare before christmas character.

>>96294134>JadeEver since they started adding Cathay as a thing, it's bolstered my thoughts that the ornamental stones the Lizardmen use is actually turquoise, rather than jade. It makes sense to me, considering that jade is a very 'even' colored stone most often, whereas turquoise is varied and eccentric. Considering the propensity for the Lizardmen to use ancient magic, it seems like it would be the most thematic stone.

>>96282783>>96282861Thanks for the feedback!
>>96294794I bought it prebuilt off a store out of Spokane wa called gamers haven, for 28 dollars if I remember correctly.
They sell alot of used models for cheap.
I have bought night goblins and they were primed REALLLLY heavy like the meme tier layered 10 times.
Not even remotely interested in playing gloom spite gitz for the third edition, and now I have 4,500 points of them sitting in a bin in my
Closet of shame.
What's the best box of miniatures I can get if I want to get some reps in on painting capes with some really good shading and depth?
>>96294750It looks like your GF after you shoot a load into her mouth.
>>96294852The old Chaos Warriors box had a bunch of capes/furs. Not sure how much it goes for nowadays
>>96294780>>96292742Oh shit, no wonder these ogres are triggering deep nostalgia. I just googled Battlemasters. That was my favourite boardgame as a kid. I forced all the other kids to play it with me. Was it a warhammer knock off? I always just figured it was some warhammer game when I thought back about it. Fuck I wonder if it's still sitting somewhere at my parent's place. I wanna paint those minis if she hasn't thrown them out.
>>96294885>Was it a warhammer knock off?Like Space Crusade, Battlemasters was a joint project between Games Workshop and Milton Bradley. That's why so many of the things in it look and feel like Warhammer models of the time ... just in mass-produced cheap plastic instead of metal.
>>96294968It was such a good idea. They need an affordable and successful gateway game like this again. It'd go a long way trying to get your friends into the hobby. I feel like they have a couple of things close to it in the AoS space, but they still look expensive as shit.
I think Darktide got a boardgame actually that just uses GW models. I bet when you work out the cost though, the models are shitty older models that they are charging more for.
>>96294990>They need an affordable and successful gateway game like this again. It'd go a long way trying to get your friends into the hobby.GW constantly puts out "gateway" games at Target and Barnes and Noble: Space Marine, Doomsday Countdown, Crypt Hunters, Space Marine Adventures, Dawn of War: Onslaught, Combat Arena, Blitz Bowl, and yes, the Darktide boardgame.
Because they already have the molds for all the models, Citadel just fills in whatever is needed for a particular game, and you can get some interesting and otherwise hard-to-find models with a trip to the board game section at one of those other retailers.
>>96295081I can't explain it, but I've always hated these colored plastic models.
>>96295081Oh they do? I guess it's just a different market and I'm a different age. Battlemasters occupied a big space of my brain as a kid. I would have played it every day if I could, and even now it's sat at the back of my mind. I don't even wargame, but in my head I've always imagined it's as fun as that game was to me.
>>96295081>be kiwifag>never see any GW board games around
>>96293387>you're supposed to play and touch your Warhammer minis, you are not supposed to play with your gundams, just display them.Wake up old man, even chinese bootleger has better quality than GW now
>>96295203And this shit is only 95 bucks
>>96295203>>96295207UUUUUNNNGH I'm sitting on my Kshatriya until I get better (never). It's like my dream project that I'm too scared to ever start.
>>96293094I think this is a deceptively complex question. I agree that single pigments are good for achieving high saturation of that single hue, and that can be hard to impossible to achieve with a mix. But colour matching low saturation pigments also isn't always possible. It would be true if you had a decent selection of pigments to choose from all over the colour space, but you don't, there are some colours with fewer options than others. I don't know, I'm not that experienced with single pigments as a painter, but I did formulate paints for several years so I might have a strong engineer's bias here.
Payne's Grey is not a single pigment, I don't know if that was your point, or if you're making the opposite point.
>>96294028>criticize the hell out of itI think it needs stronger highlights on the back to better separate the more knobbly texture from the smooth skin. The gold is dark and flat, it would also be better with sharper highlights. The feathers grab all the attention, which might be your intention, but if it isn't the face might warrant a brighter colour. Finally you've got some spots with pooling/staining.
Overall it's a very nice model you should be proud of, I kind of want to paint Seraphon myself now.
Bulked out the simple base scheme I'm doing for my skitarii.
>>96295313It looks like vomit.
>>96295317I'll remember to just do this and leave it unpainted if I ever need some nurgling basing stuff.
>>96295321Could work for space wolves as well.
>>96295313looks like you sneezed with a mouthful of poprocks and elmers glue
>>96295559You may not like it but this is what peak basing performance looks like.
>>96293535Proper storage + wet brush
>>96295313Looks like you forgot some cereal dust at the bottom of the sink then left for a couple weeks and fungus started growing on it
>>96294464You can give them a gloss varnish, makes cleaning up washes and avoiding stains much easier, especially if you also thin out the wash.
>>96291916Eyes look way better!!!!
>>96294028you didnt blend the feathers correctly
>>96282053 (OP)When it comes to improving my painting I need to work on key areas:
Blending and colour theory, I like to try and paint in the old forge world/current heresy style. What resources are best for learning to blend but more importantly colour theory?
Also, what do you think of my death guard attempt heresy wise? This is before oils.
>>96295979Vincey V is your go to all things.
>>96295979>more importantly colour theory?Look up general art tutorials on the subject on youtube. No need to stay within the narrow confines of mini painting for that one. Blending is not really something you can learn from a video.. the basics are really basic, and you probably already know them. The rest is practice.

Now that I'm done with Blood Bowl stuff for now, I'm going back to a model I've had on hold for two years. Did a bit quick and dirty stipple for the underbelly and pants, though I think it works well for a big troll. The base was already done, but I aim to have the back skin patterned similar to the rocks on the base.
Not sure what color to go for hair. Red/orange?
what paints do you guys use? I have a lot of old vallejo game colour that are running low and need replacing eventually, and citadel pots that have gone to shit and am looking for a box set to cover primary colours + metallic silver
>>96296486Stock camera app, use pro mode and shoot with the super telephoto (ST) camera, tweak EV to get the brightness right. Sometimes I use OpenCamera to take full army pictures because the baked in filters on the stock app can really fuck up those shots, but the settings are a lot more annoying to fiddle with.
>>96296497That's a cool troll; where's it from? Reminds me of Trudvang.
>>96296536Durgin Paint Forge. Has a handful of cool fantasy models
>>96294885Only the large ogre in the middle is from Battlemasters. The rest of the ogres are from a Heroquest expansion called Against the Ogre Horde, you can buy that for about $200 on Ebay every so often. The Battlemasters ogre you can find for like $15.
>>96295183>I've always imagined it's as fun as that game was to me.I feel the same way about Mutant Chronicles: Siege of the Citadel. Still my favourite boardgame of all time, and it's not even GW.

>>96296429There are a couple basic guides in the mega but the tl;dr is that you don't need a fancy camera, proper lighting and setup is WAY more important and you can take good pictures even with a smartphone camera.
