With the husks as they are, the Mahdists could end up working for the British against the Ottos (and also the Egyptians on the side), or maybe they are themselves husks and things procede closer to OTL.

Ok, I've written a quick summary of what I think could explain the egyptian situation (as well as some bits for the ottomans). This is not the full writeup, just some quick notes to get some feedback.
-------------------------------
-Anglo-Ottoman victory against the Napoleon. Rumors are abound of Napoleon entering the Giza Pyramid and exiting somewhat changed. The ottoman authority begins getting questioned due to its poor performance, as well as that of the mamluks.

- The power vacuum left in Egypt is exploited by Muhammad Ali, he becomes the “de facto” ruler after the civil war between him, the mamluks and the ottomans. The ottomans tolerate his victory over the mamluks, but they still claim nominal authority over Egypt. Muhammad Ali promotes modernization, both of the army and of the economy.

-Egypt expands across the Kingdom of Sudan, and helps the Ottomans in the Arabian Peninsula.

- Egypt helps the Ottomans in the Greek War of Independence, but they are defeated [did the greeks become independent in the 1830s or in the 1870s? The wiki gives contradictory statements].

- In exchange for their help, Muhammad Ali asks Syria. The sultan rejects this, and with his new army and fleet, Muhammad Ali invades Syria. First Egyptian-Ottoman War. They manage to win, but the need to avoid the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and to slow down Muhammad Ali’s growing power results in european aid in favor of the Sultan. Second Egyptian-Ottoman War (First Oriental Crisis). Egypt loses their gains in the previous war, but they maintain their “de facto” autonomy from the Sultanate.

- Muhammad Ali dies in 1848. His heir Ibrahim also dies months later due to disease, so Abbas Helmy (the son of Ibrahim’s younger brother) rose to power.

-Abbas’ rule in not particularly prosperous, with Ali’s modernization projects withering away and with growing aversion from the european powers. He helped the ottomans in the Crimean War, but the defeat of the Coalition resulted in a hard blow for his rule. Signing of the Treaty of Berlin in 1856. The fact he was not able to obtain a total independence from the ottomans during this stage was seen by the Egyptians as a failure.

- Abbas I dies in 1854. His successor, Sa'id Pasha, manages to get power thanks to western influence. In particular, he gets french aid in exchange of concessions to start the building of the Suez Canal. It quickly gets british investments as well due to the costs. The sinking of Paris in 1860 results in the french investments falling into English hands, they continue with the construction. Sa’id dies in 1863, his modernization project led to him siding heavily towards the English, getting close to their sphere of influence in exchange for industrial and economical aid. These projects, alongside the failed attempt conquest of Ethiopia, put Egypt into massive debt, eroding his power, as well as that of his heir Tewfik.

-1871. The Tsardom declares war to the Ottomans claiming the turks disturbed Bulgarian sovereignty. A quick stardom victory forces to cede most of the Balkans to the Austrians and the Russians. Emboldened by this, Isma'il rises in revolt against the Sultan, seeing the chance to not only obtain total independence, but also expand his power throughout Arabia. The Hejaz campaign is quickly successful, taking advantage of the anti-ottoman sentiment of the region, Meca and Medina fall in months, though he is refrained from expanding further due to English advisors, who wish to avoid a quick collapse of the region.

-The ottoman sultan Abdulaziz is deposed by Murad V, who claimed to be the savior of the Ottoman Empire. Murad V launches a near suicidal campaign against Egypt, with the goal of moving towards the Pyramid of Gizah. He quickly manages to go through the surprised Egyptian forces, but instead of moving to defeat them, Murad V instead asks to be allowed to enter the Pyramid of Giza. Utterly confused, but seeing this as a sign of madness, Isma’il allows this, and the surviving ottoman army enters the pyramid. The Egyptians decide to seal the pyramid from the outside once they are in, thinking they won’t be able to escape.

-When news of this arrive to the Ottoman Empire, the sultanate enters in a state of complete and utter panic. The nation begins quickly fracturing as a result. The Abdul Hamid II faction starts trying to put all the pieces together, but to no avail. Things worsens as a week after “the entombing” most of the city of Istambul seemingly collapsed into the depths, just as Paris did [which part of the city fell? The european or the asian one?].

- Beginning of the The Necropolis Event. A month after Murad V’s entombing, the dead begin rising all over the empire, taking arms and fighting whatever force tries to dispute ottoman rule. An immortal army of over 100,000 skeletons began a seemingly cause-less war against the surface. Utter chaos ravages the empire, with the only force managing to keep their grasp on power is the undead husks. Many cults pop up claiming it is the end of the world, massacres across the empire take place.
-After eleven days of undead revolt, Murad V returned, coming from what would be known as the Capadocian Caves, with the army he took with him now all Husked as well. From there, he launched a massive campaign of subjugation throughout the Sultanate, gaining both living and undead troops to his cause in his march to what used to be Istambul.

- By winter of 1874, Murad V has managed to recover his control over the Sultanate. Launches a series of punitive campaigns against the foreign powers who decided to move against the ottomans during its period of weakness. The Ottoman Undead marches against Egypt.

-Seeing the armies of the dead crossing across Hejaz and the Sinai, and disembarking in the shores of the Red Sea, Isma'il Pasha sees this as the end of the world and quickly becomes unstable and unable to lead the Egyptian forces. The western forces dispatched to defend the Suez Canal begin mounting a line of defense.

-Battle of Suez. The overwhelmed western are caught in a sandstorm, and seeing that the undead have no issues crossing the clouds of dust, they decide to retreat. The Egyptian forces are left manning the barricades and trenches made by the french and the English, but they are quickly overwhelmed. When all seems lost, a dustcloud moving in the opposite direction suddenly blows into the battlefield, and hundreds of warriors tattooed with ancient Egyptian hyeroglips and animal masks charge into the battlefield from the dustcloud, hacking and slashing the undead. At their head is the figure of Muhammad Ali, suddenly a young man again, encouraging the Egyptians to push back the ottoman demons. Confused, but emboldened, they come out of their trenches and destroy the walking corpses. The “Miracle of The Desert” quickly spreads across Egypt, and tens of thousands of volunteers move to fight the ottomans, pushing the turks back from the shores of the Red Sea.

-Muhammad Ali triumphal return to El Cairo is celebrated by all Egyptians. While noone can explain his return, he is clearly not a husk, as husks do not bleed, and Muhammad Ali proved to be living by cutting his palm in front of his army and letting his blood fall into the desert sands. However, dark rumors are abound that even in the most luminous days of summer, Muhammad Ali’s body does not cast a shadow anymore. He is also seen carrying multiple ancient Egyptian trinkets at all times, which makes the more faithful worried, though not at the extent in which the ottoman husks would be preferable.

-Seeing his long dead grandfather back to life, Isma'il Pasha collapses utterly, dying a couple of days later. Muhammad Ali becomes the ruler of Egypt once again.

-Joining the western powers, the newly led Egypt manages to contain the ottoman forces, though they have to abandon the territories east of the Suez Canal. Egyptian and western forces constantly patrol the strait against occasional ottoman raids.

- Seeing that there was an entrance to Agartha through the Pyramid of Giza, Muhammad Ali orders an expedition across it, reaching the layer of Pangea. The Egyptians, helped by western capital (particularly french and british) establish an outpost on the 4th. Creation of Giza Tath Al’ard.

- As the owners of an entrance to Agartha, the epigean powers move to claim their influence over Egypt before their rivals do. The Treaty of Athens established that Egypt is to be treated as “a fully sovereign item”, basically agreeing that no western power is allowed to claim Egypt under their colonial wing, though due to their massive debt, Egypt is much closer to the Anglo-French sphere of influence.

- Giza Tath Al’ard is not treated as colony or a settlement, but as the “world’s biggest military outpost”, as its goal is to push back against ottoman expansion within Pangea. If the ottomans ever manage to take over Giza Tath Al’ard, the Egyptians are ordered to seal the passages of the pyramid utterly, blocking the pass though them forevermore.

The biggest issue with this writeup was to answer how Muhammad Ali was still alive to fight the husks if he died decades before the Necropolis Event. I was following the bit of the googledoc where it's stated "The Second Oriental Crisis is headed by the now over 100 year old Mohammad Ali Pasha, who has uncovered various artifacts from under the Giza pyramid made specifically for battling husks". I don't delve much on the matter, i kind of handwave it as "he suddenly appeared again", but if someone has a better idea, be my guest.

>An interlude with the Existentialists:

The General sank deeper into his armchair, eyes closed.

Afternoon dragged on days like this. Platoons of motes swirled lazily in the rays of fiery light which shone through the windows. Everything seemed to sink downwards, from the thick curtains to the members in their chairs. The downstairs was empty at this time of day, the uninitiated tending to their posts and positions for at least an hour more. To them the club was an exclusive and exciting thing, which it was, but also a source of prestige. Wearing a hidden pin under the cuff or behind the lapel made them feel better than their comrades. The full members of the club hated this, of course. The whole point of the thing was to get away from the politicking and cronyism. An officer was supposed to be judged by his rank and record alone, never his connections. Still, keeping friends in high places ensured the survival of the branch, and drunken visitors can divulge interesting things on occasion.

He was revisiting the argument again. At his age it was difficult not to go over things again, and again. Like The Crater.

Politics, it all came down to politics. Send these soldiers forwards, hold these ones back, it’ll look bad if we don’t, damn the training. Flashes and words echoed around The General’s mind. General Burnside had been right, and The General had seen what it cost him. He had been a captain then.

And Paraguay! Paraguay.

“Sir, I believe the Walker may be rather too powerful.”

On the other side of the sitting room, battle raged.

“Whatever could you mean Lieutenant? It perfectly matches our field experience.”

The Major and the Lieutenant stood on opposite ends of the table, a board of hex-shaped tiles between them.

“Well sir, it is my understanding that these machines are more prone to mechanical errors than this simulacrum represents.”

“In what context Lieutenant?”

“Well, against the Mu our machines had notable trouble, sir.”

“There is your issue Lieutenant! That was a conflict against primitives in a primitive land. This is a Kriegspiel, a war game! It can hardly be a war if one side refuses to even use artillery. We are simulating a conflict of supply lines as much as simple tactics, and in this battle our machine is well-maintained.”

“Yes, sir.”

The Major was too fond of his machines, thought The General. Too European. His wars had been in cities and on railroads, never in some Godforsaken wilderness. War was everywhere, everything. It was no more the province of civilization than life itself was. The General had seen what war looked like against the primitive and from that very same perspective. Cavalry turned to flame, teepees burning, tripods and trenches. It was all the same at a fundamental level. A younger man might have giggled. The General instead smiled with the contentment of the elderly. It was a wonderful world.

“Now hold on there son, I ain’t finished yet.”

“Yessir.”

The Colonel had cornered a Sergeant by the drinks cabinet. The non-commissioned officers occupied a precarious space between manservant and target when they were assigned to the second floor. This Sergeant had one of the tan uniforms coming into fashion amongst the British. All identifiers of nationality, save rank, had been stripped as per tradition. Blocking his exit was the Colonel in that faded butternut grey The General remembered so well.

“Those Taiping son, you ever seen a man take a bullet square to the chest and get back up? Tso an’ Me were damn sure those Tsardom boys were ‘bout to put us in the damn ground till our boys charged! I tell you what, we might should get us some of those!”

The General didn’t know how The Colonel did it. They were the same age, but that man managed to travel the world on his adventures. Perhaps it was the hot blood of the South they had been bragging about before the war. It was the strength of their mutual organization that the North’s wisdom and the South’s vitality could be brought together. No more separation. Too many good officers had died in that conflict, and the worst part was the obligation so many felt to one side or the other. Imagine dying for something you weren’t even sure was right! Better the utter certainty of their new way. There was only war, and war was the only thing for it. It was the scalpel of the self after all. Was it Fuller who said that? But wait, The General didn’t know any Fuller. There was a brief and bitter taste in his mouth. He was dizzy, what was in that tea the Colonel had brought back?

Paraguay again.

It was too damnably hot here. Everything was sticky with moisture, and not a single surface was free of insect life. The men around him were in a stupor, they had all misjudged the morphine dosage again, or maybe they just wanted to die softly. They lay against the gun, or in the ground. Some were face down in the mud. The sky was dark and grey, and in the ceaseless purple flashing of the clouds he could see everything. There! A Sioux warband in the sky. And there! Mexicans at Veracruz! And Confederates at The Crater! Frenchmen at Amatlán! Every foe in his career stared down at him from the sky, illuminated purple and glowing! Across the muddy clearing of the jungle he saw the too-tall thing stagger out from the trees.

“UUUUUUUUUUULLAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!”

It was stumbling, but not damaged. It looked, no, it felt hungry. Not just hungry, but weak and starving. Three legs as tall as churches, and a tin-can head with gargantuan viewports for eyes. The General stood transfixed, but his body left his mind and made slowly for the cannon. It was so beautiful, standing with the purple sky behind it. He marvelled at the seamless construction, the fluid movements even in emaciation, and the almost gentle deadliness it exuded.

“UUUUUUUUUULLLLLLAAAAA-”

He watched in awe as every colour of the rainbow splattered out from the tripod’s head when it detonated. He hadn’t even aimed, at least not consciously. There was a sadness to this, to destroy something so beautiful. But there was a purity in the action too. The General fell to his knees, weeping and laughing as the tripod shuttered sideways and slumped into the canopy.

The clicking of heels brought him forth from his happiest memory. It must be another recruit, here to hear that same story. They never understood. Theirs was the smash-boom giddiness of children, and the sublime perfection of that moment was impossible to explain. It was terrible to be known for that, forced to always recall what you could never again experience.

The General opened his eyes.

“Konnichiwa, Shiki-kan.”

Before him stood a young man, his shoes polished and uniform neat. It was very dark, with a sword buckled to the side. An Imperial Japanese officer then, this could be interesting. He looked upwards, no medals and no insignias. This recruit would be like the rest, no experience and no knowledge of war. The chances were that he would wash out early or be sent on an assignment of no-return. Too many dandies found the romance of their organization more appealing than the reality. Wastrels to a man. The General raised his view once more.

This man was different. Entirely shorn of hair, with shrapnel scarring and burns on one side of his head and face. Here was a man who had seen a battle, perhaps many. A man who was not scared by a little bloodshed, a man who embraced it. His eyes told the most, because they were hungry. Hungry and emaciated like the tripod. Like The General.

He smiled then.

>NOTES:
Writing for the Existentialists is fucking hard. They have a weird mindset. The General has mostly gotten over his Civil War hangups, but he still has some American Exceptionalism in his brain despite all the talk of equality among officers no matter background. Then again, so does the Major since he’s full in on the German technical superiority meme. They’re all on good enough terms to take this sort of thing in stride, for now at least. Time will tell if one of them ever snaps in an argument over unit balance.

The sort of person who goes to serve in 8 different armies in the 19th century is a good template for one type of Existentialist I think. Someone like Gordon who is in it for the adventure as much as any other reason. That’s what the Colonel was based on. Others like The General are really different mentally. Seeing Hyperboreans does that to a person. Also just fighting in the late Civil War. The Japanese recruit is in a similar mindset. Meanwhile I think the Lieutenant is just here because his commanding officer joined and he followed like a dog. The Sergeant is here for the paycheck and is regretting his choices.

The Fuller reference might have been pushing it on a couple of levels, but I saw in a paper about British historiography in the early 20th century that he directly called war a scalpel for cutting away the fat of the nation, and that’s a Warfare Existentialist quote if I’ve ever heard one (Just replace nation with the self and there you go). I will say that the main thing keeping the Existentialists away from later developments of Fascism is their complete disdain for civilian life. They’re never going to schmooze their way into industry or the general public like the Fascists did because they cannot disguise their contempt for the average person. They can barely manage to hide their distaste of other officers who won’t join, and even doing that is a contentious subject. (It should be noted that these semi-members who aren’t in the inner circle might include figures like Cunningham who are showing up as a societal thing to show how much they like war and also maybe negotiate covert contracts.)

Also note the complete absence of enlisted men except the sergeant in the story. They are here to go into the trenches and then die according to the Existentialists, and when they’re not doing that they can serve drinks and shut up. The Existentialists only get away with doing this through a combination of strict discipline, and really good pay for their soldiers.

I like it. And I don't know if it's your intention, but you can very easily argue that he's a Napoleon puppet with the whole lack of a shadow + pyramids thing (or the total opposite? Who knows.) Or, if you want, we could just write that he went on an earlier expedition into the Pyramid and disappeared, assumed dead, and then things go along from there. We could work it in that he knows more than anyone about the true function of the pyramids, save Napoleon, though I feel like there should be some kind of cost to that knowledge.

>Expedition! is also an in-universe wargame
Kek. Surprised nobody ever thought of that before.

I like the story. Especially the Paraguay flashback. A really understated exploration of the insanity the existentialists (involuntarily? Would Warfare Existentialism be classified as a mental condition if more people knew about it?) subject themselves to.

I didn't write it and have no clue what the plans for it were. The obvious solution would be for him to mysteriously disappear one day instead of dying. Frankly, I've come to see the supernatural angle in Egypt as a bit overblown and wacky. At the very least I'm not sure we need immortal Muhammad Ali AND the artifacts AND the beast-headed warriors with laser eyes.
You know, people keep bringing up Mahdists, but wouldn't Muhammd Ali himself be a factor here? I can see a lot of people thinking that HE is the Mahdi, if he doesn't claim the title himself. The Mahdist revolt would either not even happen the way it did or it could be against Muhammad Ali, with the rebels denouncing him as Dajjal and rallying behind the REAL Mahdi.

I suggested the name Khrabry already. Or the city could just keep the original name. Anything but Bretovsk, because it sounds like if you named a French city Bordyon or and English city Lonbridge.

would it help if we established that most of their weirdness only exists underground? On the surface I would guess it's mostly your standard husk-fighters and some very uncomfortable Euros.
