This reminds me of this one webcomic of a elf who was tasked to help a hero turned king new nation he was building. When it's to the point of the king's son being a old man on his deathbed was just bitching that humans have super short lifespans. Only for the old man laugh and tease him about him saying the same thing to dad when he was dying and not to cry too long as he needs to help his grandson and son like he did last time.

First reason:
* Dwarves are strong, they don't get sick or weak
* Dwarves are stubborn, they refuse to die
* Dwarves are greedy, they refuse to give up life

Second reason: in most fantasy settings, you need a plausible explanation why humans are like 80% of the population. Most common one being they're like rats: breed like fuck and swarm all over the place. Short lifespan = massive population, therefore the inverse must also be true. (That's also why Elves tend to despise humans. Human:Elf = Termite:Homeowner

Third reason: because Tolkien did it and most fantasy worlds are just ctrl+c/ctrl+v.

Dwarves are shorter, meaning things that would them hunt them won't see them over tall brush.
They have long matted hair that predators have trouble biting and clawing through.
The average dwarf lives a nocturnal lifestyle but carries plenty of bright light sources that blind most of its natural predators.
The average dwarf ways more than the average human, and therefore can't be carried off by a large bird of prey.

I hate the fantasy trope that humans are evil rats swarming and destroying everything and other good fantasy races are equal to humans but with superior traits. If anything dwarves are the closest to the industrial era humans who swarmed the Earth.

Even if you try to wave that as not the kind of procreation that pseudmedieval Fantasy World Humans get up since they don't have the same medical tech, census polling, lifespans, etc. there's still the fact that Humans are creatures that can have 1-6 children every year for a roughly 25 year time frame after coming to reproductive maturity in less than two decades.
Compare that to Dwarves and Elves who are popularly immature for at least 40 years, and presumably have longer gestation periods.

The large majority is 1 child per year at best and it takes its toll so no woman would follow that rhythm for 25 years. Even populations with high birth rates have like 5-10 children per woman and that's when accompanied by high death rates.

I'm saying dwarves are done wrong I don't care about their time before maturity. This time only follows the lifespan, it would be reduced if the lifespan was.
I compare humans to other animals and compared to them we have a very long lifespan.

Think of it compared to humans then. Imagine a creature that lives about a tenth as long as we do. Using 80 that's 8 years, shorter than a dog.
It only takes 1.5 years for it to mature and start popping out kids, which it can and likely would do repeatedly for at least half their window because they die a lot and the farm can always use more hands and maybe one will make it big in Hollywood.
So a thing that can have kids within two years and can make like 10 of them and each one of those can start making more with others before their mother's fertility window wanes-

Humans have one of the longest lifespans and longest juvenile periods of all animals. We are already the elves of the animals.

My point is thematically, we only "need" one exceptionally long-lived race, which is the Elves. The rest should more or less be around the human range, we can have more than one exceptionally long-lived race but it shouldn't be the norm because humans are already exceptionally long-lived and I don't like them being reduced to rats. And dwarves feel like they should be less because thematically they're the industrious mining and drinking people, not whimsical nature spirits or a mysterious forgotten race.

When an Elf is born it could likely be 50 or more years before they're adults in some fictions. A Human born at the same time would be in their evening years and have had a child that has a child. That's why they're regarded as overflowing rats racing to accomplish their ambitions.

Nah I think you can have a few long lived races other than just Elves now. I think the best way of making humans the baseline for everything. They breed pretty quickly but they don't have a short lifespan compared to other races who mature quickly. So a human by 50 they could a father of 10 and a grandfather to 50. Where a Dwarf that is 50 is just now seen as adult, and the Elf at 50 still hasn't started puberty yet.
