CthulhuTech Second Edition Review (it's bad)
Here:

TL; DR; Cash grab. With woke. And Furries. To quote the reviewer: "It is a disaster in which giant mechs and magic are replaced with catboys (literally)."

The basic difference between 'furries' and 'beastmen' is that beastmen are supposed to be somewhat horrifying and ugly, whereas 'furries' are made to look attractive and usually garish.

A literal who has a dogshit opinion, more at 12!

Nah, the game is mostly fine. I'm in one right now and while it sucks that I can't play a psychic, I'm having fun with my Whisper.

>The Good:

I love the introductory overview of the stats and actions, since it shows what to expect. The roll/shot dual-system is an interesting way to do it and I'm curious to see it in play. While they didn't call it a "life path," I really dig the lifepath system for character generation. The side-by-side roll/shot presentation is nice too. I also like the fact that you get cool weird new humans like snake people!

I do like some of the narrative upgrades. Removing the killswitch not being a deus ex machina is nice because that definitely bugged me back then. The fact that they decided to go with the fully updated metaplot rather than a reset is also nice. I absolutely ADORE the conversations of the Tagers with their shrinks and in general the "lifestyle" section of the Eldritch Society really made the whole thing pop and brought it to life.

>The Annoying:

Not a huge fan of "modern sensibilities," and everything that follows from it, changing of the name from the Rapine to the Ravening Storm. I kind of get it, but I also think that neutering everything definitely feels tonally inconsistent. The whole "USA and Russia resisted the abolition of wealth" was a bit cringe as is the general anti-capitalist rhetoric. The "no piracy" for fabricators is definitely unreasonable as the mindset of the pirate is that of someone who does it because they can and because they believe information should be free. Also the whole "law enforcement is taught to de-escalate" makes zero sense in the context of the fact that someone doing a crime can bring through horrible abominations.
Anonymous No.96370254 [Report] >>96375210
>>96370251
The Questionable:

Kind of odd that the Ashcroft Foundation somehow managed to resist being corrupted for all this time. Arcologies seem a bit utopian. I'm also intuitively not sure about the logistics of the arcologies - I would need to sit down and do the math, I think. Some of the Tager abilities are maybe a bit undefined (can the Echo drown people by manipulating water?).

The Pet Peeve:

Why no love for the Elder Things? They get a blurb about leaving tech behind for humanity, but I'd rather them be the secret good guys for humanity as well.
Anonymous No.96370282 [Report]
>>96370251
The 'modern sensibilities' in CTech 2nd Edition are so bad that there's more lore about how Chrysalis Corp is actually a company of normal people (who are secretly monsters) than there is lore about the Eldritch Society and how it functions. I almost thought they were going to make Dhohanoids playable as antiheroes with how much the core book wanks them off.

It still holds meaning. Similar to how there was the phrase “toxic masculinity” the problem is real like how “wokeness” is real it is just that nobody behind those words could decide when something became an example of toxic masculinity or wokeness.

I think they might be conflating two rather infamous things, the official stand alone adventure Mom's Coming to Dinner (PCs unavoidable rape) with the QBattery from Unveiled Threats (magical mana technomagical machine powered by a sacrificial baby in a box).

But hey, it's CT. Having a rape machine could be something the Rapine Storm did for shit and giggles and it would be nothing strange.

See the thing about the horned ones is that it makes sense in their function as a maneater, but honestly they don't have to look like that to do so. Father Dagon's cult is much more effective at collecting "breeding materials" and we already established shapeshifters among the populous, so making them look like Kemomimi anime girls detracts from the horror IMO.

Aside from the Zen... Nazzadi idea (and not even that closely) CT doesn't follow anime mecha tropes. Like, at fucking all. The most you can dig from it is that Engels give you an initial sanity penalty.

IIRC they ARE supposed to be smoking hot, even in the fanservice-y environment of CT, so it kinda makes sense to do so. The nekomimi is... cheap at the very least, but it's connected to the nature cult nature of the uh, cult, and they're the "honey" part of honeypot.

(I mean, using their unimaginative as hell version of shubby's "fertility" cults as unethical orgies, but this IS how the average nerd probably understands her idea, so whatever)

I do totally agree that they're not horror in the slightest and at best they're a bad joke, but I don't think the problem is the ears and the flully tail.

It gets nothing from that neither mechanically nor setting-wise, even if was clearly intended to do so. Ironically even the biomechanical nature of the Engels is clear from the beginning to the pilots and staff, so the one thing it's there is the reverse from NGE.

Nta. Yeah in play, at least in the official released adventures, it doesn't feel as anime. However, in all fairness there are points in the setting where it really feels anime, because at its core it's a parody.
Like when I read the part where the Nazzadi's suicide switch didn't work because it mutated out, it felt so anime as a twist. It even feels like something in Macross/Robotech.

Engels are Eva and RahExphon(low rent Eva) inspired as stated in the corebook, the regular mecha are Macross, Southern Cross, and Mospeda inspired as stated in the corebook or more correctly Robotech because the devs are fags who need to go back to ROBOTECHX.COM and keep LAUGHING for a few more years.

OG CthulhuTech also couldn't shut the fuck up about the edgy future's underage orgy culture. I'm not averse to particularly a setting like CthulhuTech's portraying sexual violence as part of its horror, but even the nogames in this thread who've literally never heard of CthulhuTech until right when OP posted can admit that some of OG CT's sexual content was just transgressive for the sake of juvenile shock value.

The really bad thing was that it's essentially 3 games disguised in 1:
1) Normal Human Investigators campaign
2) Army Mecha Pilot campaign
3) Tager Super Ninja vs Nyarlathotep Corp. campaign

And none of them are compatible with each other, it even says in several books (i.e. Tager's super healing will make it obvious to the medics, so don't enlist in the army).

I mean one of the first things shinji deals with is seeing it's big gross eye regenerate right in front of him.

It's just kind of blatant where a thing with biomecha fighting evil monsters with lots of insanity mechanics is plainly just blending shared elements between lovecraft and eva. Woke - that being an ideology based on ethical concerns and near-religious FIXATIONS which centre on race, gender, sexual identity and any other marginalized group categorization one could perceive to be more oppressed this week.

It mimics socialism's fixation on class struggle, but apes it to make class an immutable physical/genetic trait, a sin you're born into, so that the goalpost can always move.

And the goalpost ALWAYS moved into whatever IP hasn't been turned into more homogenous gray filth, devoid of point and soul and edge and flavour and life. Much like communism, everything that this new religion infects slowly rots and withers down into a husk.

Here's your buzzword: "Intersectional". Amusing bit of history for you anon: The Romans called them Christiani (Latin) or Christianoi (Greek equivalent), which literally meant 'followers of Christ,' which to the Romans of that age was a bit of insulting wordplay implying they would all literally follow Christ's footsteps to the same end fate of martyrdom because they're all crazy.
This slur was adopted by the early Christian believers as a badge of honor, ironically becoming a key part of their formative culture as the cult gradually distinguished itself from mainstream Judaism and found its own identity. To this day, we still call them Christians.

That's... the point.

Shinji is scared (and actually blacks out) at that because he doesn't know about that, and it's meant to be secret. In fact, it's something that will be uncovered waaaaay later.

The engel pilots KNOW they ride biomechanical machines/creatures/hybrids (and then the only hint is the toughts of the engels, which is cool but not even NGE-related). There's no secret.

And COC insanity (and CTech's one) is not only hardly "lovecraftian", but definitely not NGE-like.

I do wonder if maybe there was a slim influence by Muv Luv, which is possibly the only mecha thing to kinda resemble CT, but it's almost impossible. These guys remembered cool robots from Macross, fapped to Zentradi in their youths, and not really anything else. No different with NGE (there is even a totally not Rei hybrid alien) altough they could've wanted to reply a bit of NERV it's not really there.

Not the guy you're asking, but he's not fucking with you.
The Ctech lore in one of the splatbooks - I forget which, it' been over a decade since /tg/ was pointing and laughing at Ow The Edge the roleplaying game - had a machine which generated huge amounts of magical energy (orgone, in ctech parlance).
For some lore reason or another, killing people generates orgone and killing people horrifically, so that they have a traumatic and suffering-filled death, generates more. I guess that's why horrible human sacrifices work to power rituals.

The Violator extrapolated this to the kind of logical but insane conclusion you'd expect of such a setting - build a machine that kills people over a protracted period in a horrific manner, in a mechanistic fashion.

The result is a machine which you strap multiple people into, which automatically and horribly rapes them to death while attempting to prolong their survival and suffering, and having the required magical circuitry to harvest the resulting orgone and store it.

This is separate to, as someone else said, the Q Battery, a man portable orgone battery created by one of the edgy evil magitek megacorps. The Q Battery generates a small amount of orgone over time, allowing it to be tapped repeatedly, and it has an emergency drain button that gives you a burst of orgone but renders it unusable. The megacorp has the means to recharge them, but they have aggressive anti-tamper mechanisms to prevent their secrets being stolen.
The secret? The battery contains a human fetus, since life itself generates a small amount of orgone constantly. The baby will not survive long-term from this, but it will survive the months required of such a battery. The emergency drain button doesn't just go "suck all the power out", it kills the baby (horribly) in order to generate that burst you want. It may or may not be a literal blender.

You know, in retrospect it's kinda funny that they didn't use teenagers to pilot the not!EVAs. I mean, I hardly think THAT was considered edgier or more unsafe.

they're reply to you with single sentence terse sarcasm but you're 100% right
For future reference those posts are honeypots. The point is to get you to respond at all so they can mock you for consensus building.

>For some lore reason or another, killing people generates orgone and killing people horrifically, so that they have a traumatic and suffering-filled death, generates more. I guess that's why horrible human sacrifices work to power rituals.
To be absolutely fair in hindsight this magic system isn't really unique to CT. Like RIFTS also has this where sacrificing beings generate more Magic at their point of death (or Potential Psychic Energy = PPE in that setting). Various system also had their version of a rape machine (although CT is the most descriptive). Honestly the Q battery is the only thing that's truly horrifically unique that they did, and in all fairness IMO it's more effective at conveying how magic of Cthulhu is fucked up with technological advancement (at least better than the rape machine).

I think they were going that route with the White Xenomixes from the descriptions at least of them being state watched and very young and empathic, but stopped to let them become more than just a mecha option.

Parts of CT I just nostalgically adore because it's a good mix of anime, early 2000s edge, and cosmic horror. You don't see it nowadays and those that tries to do so kinda misses the point or isn't genuine about it.

Nigga it's the barest of secrets. It's a thin lace doily put over the giant monster. The audience certainly knows lol

If your big distinction is that on whether the pilots know the giant hollowed out monsters they're piloting to fight other monsters that are going to drive them insane are so or not, that ain't much. I've seen bigger distinctions from the source inspiration in robocop bootlegs.

Is just the battletech cope but for evangelion? "Our thing is actually very different from that other thing we've clearly copied". It's not a problem until you start making it weird by being so insistent. Then it looks insecure.

I was arguing that it is clearly intended to be NGE with serial numbers filed off but failed to actually implent it enough. That doesn't mean it's "very different", in fact the engels are pretty hollow as setting and rules go.

agreed. It's more likely to be effective in play, it's more likely to be something the players can engage with and feel bad about, and that matters 'cause RPGs are more effective in play and less effective when things are just worldbuilding details you read about in the book or on a wiki.
