This is where I don't agree. Disengage? Okay, they have 200 million dollars worth of Final Fantasy buyers coming in to replace you. Maybe they don't actually play, but if they do, you need to punish them. Make a mono-U turbo counterspell deck and lock them out of the game. Don't buy any new product, that is all that matters here. If you want to stop buying MTG entirely, that's fine too, but buying old cards doesn't really help WotC a huge amount esp if they're cheap ones.

I've generally found people are a lot happier when their hobbies don't become their jobs, not necessarily because it makes the hobby feel like a job, or that doing a job more suited to their values makes them feel more fulfilled in life, but because real world changes and company changes can often result in the hobby becoming something you didn't originally fall in love with.

Even if he enjoyed Edge of Eternities and Final Fantasy limited, you can tell most of his enjoyment for the game comes from the Magic system itself and not really from anything WotC has printed for constructed in the past 5+ years. The game has left him behind and he doesn't seem to want to admit that the game did that to him, because he still like the game itself, even if the game pieces don't appeal to him anymore.

As someone who defended the Final Fantasy set fiercely.. It's not a good set. The cards don't look clever, inventive, or fun. It doesn't look cohesive, or anything close to meshed with Magic: the Gathering's mechanics as Final Fantasy was. Like, I don't get why Tifa and Zell are landfall based all of a sudden, but I can shrug and say whatever about it, at least they're both the punchy warriors and they work together to throw big punches. What IS the power of Spider-Man? There is no "Spider-Man thing". Sometimes he's got Flying, sometimes he's got Reach, sometimes he's got Vigilance, sometimes he draws you cards because you put stun counters on things? It's just random.
There's no vision to it. There's the barest feel of Spider tribal, but even that is confused. Your Spider tribal commander deck is now gonna have a guy in spandex commanding Shelob and a bunch of changelings around. The whole set is ugly.
To top it all off, Spider-Man just isn't as iconic as Marvel or Wizards believes. I know of Spider-Man. I know he swings around New York fighting crime. I know there's a Green Goblin and Venom involved. But pretty much everything stops there. I do not have the slightest idea what Mister Negative's deal is, or why the fuck there's a "Spider-Mobile" when the guy is supposed to get around with webs as like his entire deal. Who is this made for? Why did they dig so deep into wikis? Everyone in the FF set was a pretty meaningful character, they even ran out of room for meaningful characters and had to leave some by the wayside.

Not being ran as often in affinity as you think. Grixis Affinity can run into color problems too much so 2 colorless makes more sense than u+1. On top of that, if you're running one of the sac to draw 2 cards and using the wellspring as sac fuel, it's just wellspring that requires blue. It makes more sense to run it in something like flickertron or affinity without black and hence without the excess of sac engines.
