You can't be serious. Impactful? If you're trying to say effective, then sure, there's no arguing with that. Lowering stats, extra movement, magic missiles, sure, they get the job done, but are they impactful? No. Not a single spell in TOW is exciting to cast. Not a single spell in TOW will suddenly swing the game in your favor, nor will a lucky dispel swing the game in your opponent's favor either, with conveyance spells being the only real exception. I'd argue this is by design and, judging by the posts about magic in this very thread, was done because some people really disliked the magic phase in 8th (with good reason, but they listened to the complainers too much). As for variety, what variety? Every magic missile does the same thing. Every conveyance spell does (with TMP being a notable exception, and if you want to talk about spells ruining the game, we can talk about how awful TMP was before it got fixed) functionally the same thing. Every enchantment? Same thing, just buffs your guys' stats. Every hex? Same thing, just lowers your opponents' guys' stats. Magical vortexes have a little variety in their effect, but even then they're so fucking boring. Dangerous Terrain! Dangerous Terrain that blocks LoS! Dangerous Terrain that makes you take a break test if you go near it! Dangerous Terrain that moves and deals a small amount of hits if it touches anything! Just go read the spell lores from 6th.There's no point to this discussion if you won't do that. Fuck, I'll spoonfeed you the lore of Fire from 6th. You want to talk about variety? Look at the different spell effects! Look at how you resolved them! Look at how the spells made you play the game differently! Then look at TOW, where every spell is just an effect applied to a unit after you roll two dice against your opponent's two dice. If you want to bitch about 8th's magic, fine, but Fantasy isn't just 8th.

Steed of shadow is Spectral Steed but worse. Steed of Shadows is actually in the game but it targets an entire unit.
Creeping death is just a magic missile
Shades of death is Deathly Cabal
pelt of Midnight is straight up useless
Unseen Lurker is Arcane Urgency
Pit of Shades is just vortex that can slow. Almost every vortex is difficult/dangerous terrain in tow and therefore reduce movement and charges.

None of those have as much impact as crystal column, travel mystical pathway, miasmic mirage, earthen rampart or phantasmagoria

As a fan both: AoS 4th is the killer combination of being both extremely bland and poorly balanced. It's just not fun, and a good deal of the things it's lacking (namely customization) are present in TOW.

AoS primaris'd their land marines and squatted their beastmen, has no lore, and seems to generally not be very fun or complex due to giant centerpiece spam and tiny army sizes. Not to mention everything that isn't a 1:1 remake of a preexisting WFB model looks like dog ass, not many people out there with Inner Cities of Sigmar or steampunk faggot dorf armies.
Anonymous No.96526351 [Report]
>>96526006
Steed of Shadows is not just Spectral Steed but worse and Unseen Lurker is not Arcane Urgency. Both of these spells allow you to make a charge, which is something you can't do with conveyance spells in TOW because you cast them during the remaining moves sub-phase. You should also be comparing it to Infernal Gateway. Pelt of Midnight is situational, but you're smoking crack if you think making a unit significantly harder to hit during the shooting phase is useless. Pit of Shades isn't a vortex, it works like a magic missile spell, it has an infinite range, and moving at half speed is a lot more impactful than you make it out to be.
>crystal column
Fair, that spell is actually really cool. Shame casting it is so mind-numbingly boring.
>TMP
As was mentioned previously, a notable, but welcome, exception, but if you want to bitch about broken spells you don't get to say nice things about TMP. I've experienced firsthand what old TMP could do. Not fun.
>miasmic mirage
Good spell, very powerful. Worthy of being the 6th spell of its lore. Real shame you cast it in exactly the same way you'd cast any other spell, making it feel like any other hex.
>earthen ramparts
Is it strong? Sure, especially if you're playing at a tournament. Is it impactful? What even is your definition of impactful? Game-winning? Memorable?
>phantasmagoria
Sure, it's good. Real shame the rest of the lore sucks so hard that nobody ever picks it.
Also, it's extremely gay that illusion and elementalism have four out of your five super impactful spells. Not all armies have access to these lores. But, I'll concede, not all spells in TOW are bland and boring in and of themselves. Just most of them, and also all of them, because casting these spells doesn't feel impactful. In summary, TOW magic sucks and I don't like it! 2d6+mod, bleh. Disgusting! And you cherrypicked spells and I think that's gay too, which makes you gay.

TOW is just AoS but with rank and flank tactics and working magic and artillery that doesn't just function like nu-40k, where every spell is either a XD6 shooting attack or debuff. People are tired of 10th ed 40gay and 4th ed AoSissy and their shrimplified no-customization anti-/yourdoods/ horseshit. Also helps that half the AoS range people actually buy (WoC, Night Goblins, Ogres, AoS tranpires, Dark Elves) are more or less usable in TOW with a simple adapter tray.

Oh well. And yeah, I hate everything to come out of AoS other than the 1:1 remakes like their Night Goblins, but the elves and dorfs are by far the most offensively shit, with Eltharion in the hollow suit of armor and Grombrindal being the only exceptions. My local scene does both, but TOW is slowly gaining frequency. I enjoy both, but am more about TOW desu.
Personally, I like it primarily because it's more "relatable" to me. I'm not a huge lore guy, and have yet to read a single GW book. But with 40K and AoS, when every faction has essentially infinite land and resources, it's hard for me to care that town/planet 15437 got burned to the ground.
In alternate fantasy earth, a 2000 point game is probably how big a renaissance era battle would look like. If my guys fail to repel the invaders, their entire city, of which there is a limited number, is probably fucked. Conversely, sacking my opponent's city would actually matter in terms of prosperity. My guys running off the battlefield makes them feel realer to me than simple game pieces.
In terms of gameplay, I like that there are fewer, but larger, decisions, and fuckups are punished severely. It makes me feel like I'm actually commanding a battle than playing a board game.
Also I like that I can carry 2000 points in a reasonably sized backpack

Tomb kings are the 5th easiest race to see anywhere.
Greenskins are literally global, even in the wood elf and high elf lands.
Beastmen are the same (maybe not high elf?)
Skaven
Ogres - cause they are actually migratory, so they could show up anywhere, and are known for being mercenaries to anyone.
Then tomb kings and chaos warriors about equally likely. Tomb kings could just as simply be looking for a summer home, to settle an ancient grudge, build new trade routes (some tomb kings have living citizens), source the best metals, get warp stone, or just pure boredom travel. Ennui is a very real issue with tomb kings compared to the other races.

Newbie GM here, playing WFRP with my newbie friends who are discovering Warhammer.

We're having a blast, loads of fun.

Just one question as a GM, do you guys let the player know the statblocks and Wounds of foes during a fight?

So far I've tried to keep it a secret to not make it too numbers focused and keep the mystery, like "oh you've wounded the goblin in the arm, but he's still well alive" rather than "he loses 4 wounds, he still has 8 left" if that makes sense.

Don't mind me with a drive-by question but, hypothetically, if I wanted to start an army, Tomb Kings, and I bought the starter box but wanted to round it out, how should I do it?
I literally do not know the rules but a coworker plays 40k so we talk about Warhammer.
All I know is that there's some sort of thing where you can do Mortuary Cult or Royal Host and then saw a post mentioning "Grand Army". I'm guessing that means you just bring whatever unit you want but you don't get the bonuses of the other army rules.

Anyway, what I'm aiming for is hordes of skeletons so I don't know if Mortuary Cult for the ARISE! is better or if Royal Host gives bonuses to regular skeleton warriors and archers.
I wanna bog down the enemy in Skeleton Spearmen and shoot them to death and run them over. 2 screaming skull catapults.

>>96532080
It's in a small part due to scanning, imo.
I'll tell my process: I used picrel for starters, cleared the junk around it, and fully desaturated it. Then I up-scaled it, as well as the same (smaller) pic that's on the wiki, and tried to superimpose them; trying to match them in terms of position and in the tones of B&W.
In the end, I uploaded the end result on the wiki, replacing the older version.

Mortuary Cult and Royal Host are different configurations of the army that allows you to take more or less of specific units and give them unique rules.

Mortuary Cult is themed around the priests (spell casting) and constructs whereas Royal Host is themed around chariots.

I would suggest getting ushabtis and a scorpion. Those two units are always going to be good no matter what type of army build you'll end up wanting to play or not.
From there it would depend on what you want to play but some characters like a priest, a necrotect and an army's battle standard bearer would probably be safe bets.

Like the other reply said, don't tell them the straight wound count for enemies at all. If you want to be descriptive, a term my group uses to let the players know you're really fucking up an enemy is that you've "bloodied the enemy" as a way of saying that the characters are knowledgeable enough to recognize the point where they've done significant damage to something. Or an out of character way to say something is roughly at half wounds and starting to be seriously hurt. Otherwise go ham with describing how they've cut into the foe, pelted them with arrows, the whole deal. You can sell the brutal nature of combat that way, especially when it inevitably gets turned on them.

He's probably playable but large target with only 6 wounds, 5+ armour 5+ invul sounds like he's in big trouble against any kind of shooting. That being said, he's also fly 10 so there's some possibility to play around terrain and wait a bit until your other units can tie up ranged units before you use him.

I guess it really depends on the matchup.

>Have you actually read all of this cynical schlock?

The writing goes down hill after Broken Realms Kragnos, with Broken Realms Morathi being the absolute peak of AoS imo, with 3rd being quite "meh" in terms of lore and plot.
The Dawnbringers stuff in particular is fucking awful until book 6 which reaches the amazing heights of almost OK. However, the 4th edition stuff is actually amazing.
I'm loving the current lore direction, the plot developments and it's actually got me liking Skaven which has never happened before. I'm very invested and can't wait to see where the lore goes.

1st ed lore - 7/10 good fantasy but hardly breath-taking

2nd ed lore - 9/10 some of the best fantasy I've had the pleasure of reading and it was genuinely a blast to see Morathi ascend, the siege of the Eightpoints by the Bonereapers, the ending of the Soul Wars by Teclis and Alarielle and so on.

3rd - 5/10 just dull, with no interesting lore developments and boring characters being introduced.

4th - 8/10 AoS is climbing out of the pit that was 3rd, the lore is advancing in great ways, the map is being literally redrawn and there's actual stakes again with whole Cities of Sigmar being lost. It's still ongoing but I'm loving everything thus far.

When you have ill-defined, effectively infinite 40k-ified "realms" this hardly matters, while Praag or Altdorf being destroyed would be a huge deal.

Nah, the loss of Phoenicium for example was a pretty major one. The annexing of Anvilgard and founding of Har Kuron was super important, the Siege of Excelsis was a pivotal moment in the lore. Embergard is basically all that stands between the Skaven and total victory etc.
There's locations just as important and well established in AoS as there are in WFB.

From what I understand of aos there's like 15 cities of sigma that actually matter and they already blew up 3 over the course of 4 editions.
Altdorf and praag and whatever being so important was nice, but it also introduced an opposite problem where, because the stakes were so high things looped back around again to there being no stakes because the locations were so important you knew nothing was ever going to happen to them. (Well except for praag since it's like the designated sacking city of the old world). This isn't really a problem if the world is a static setting, but whenever gw tried to move some things forwards nothing ever really happened. Tamurkhan had this whole journey over a book and then promptly got btfo when he threatened the first location of note he came across in nuln.

>From what I understand of aos there's like 15 cities of sigma that actually matter and they already blew up 3 over the course of 4 editions.
This is current. There's 11 major cities, the only real bastions of hope and order in the Chaos infested Realms, and they've lost 3, with Embergard likely to be the 4th but it's only just clinging on to life.

'Moving the setting forward' literally never works. Either nothing happens or you destroy something people quite liked.

Filling in the background is a far superior approach. Mordheim can be destroyed without removing Bechafen (admittedly no one cares about Bechafen). Borders can change as much as you like. The Old World is probably the ideal case actually. I particularly like the way they've expanded Kislev's borders all the way to Cathay, allowing the Great War to truly fuck Kislev up.

The math isn't hard to do, on regular infantry with light armor and shield that's slightly more than 6 wounds inflicted and like half a wound taken, which means a block of infantry without horde or a magical banner or a bsb would lose by like 0.5-0.7 wounds on average or something like that.

Needless to say you're taking chances. Having first charge is really important when you want to smash infantry nowadays. But I guess you could easily get some furies to charge with him, that'd be enough to win almost every time.

Let's say I do take Settra and do a Royal Host army...
This is probably a stupid question, but is Settra really better than several tomb kings and princes on chariots? That's a quarter of my points on naked Settra.
I'm just playing around in the builder and I want more models than a single unit of skeleton spearmen and archers and then this or that.
Knowing nothing about the game it's probably worthless to have 3 units of 20 skellies rather than digging deep and equipping units for the right job.

Settra isn't played at all competitively and is known to be meh for his point cost. I have no idea if he's playable in normal club games though, I don't know his stats and have never faced him.
As for equipment it depends too much on your strategy and army as a whole to be specific. Sometime you want cheap infantry units as your anvil/turn wasters and sometime you want a buffed expensive infantry unit (equipment+spells enchantments+characters inside) as your hammer and/or your anvil. It depends entirely on what you bring with it. I doubt you'll need more skeletons than what's in the starter box though

>>96535435
>Does that mean there is a minimum but no maximum or is there a clarification in other rules beyond unit stat sheets on what the maximum limit is? If it is as written what's the point in running two sets of Grave Guard for instance and not just 50 of the fuckers one brick?
Yes, you're right. And the point would be maneuverability and not getting overwhelmed. Big units have larger width and therefore wheeling cost more points and you'll get fucked by terrain more easily and you'll get charged by multiple units at the same time.

That being said it's very strong as VC to get one big unit (up to 30) of grave guards with drilled because you put a bsb with helm of commandment in there, give the grave guard the drakenhof banner and use drill to make them really maneuverable (especially with reserve move) and you got a very scary blender.

God this pissed me off so much. Kislev already came with multiple internal conflicts. Tzarina wanting to control all the spell casters, including ice witches and hedge witches, Ungols vs Gospodars was interesting enough, but then they added literal Rasputin (it was charming when they did it with Joan of Arc, but doing it again is just unoriginal) and creating a church vs witches conflict in a country founded by a witch, where witches are beloved folk heroes.

That's like updating Bretonnia and adding a church of England expy that wants to burn the Damsels on the stake.

I have an idea for a proxy that I wanna run by y'all.
I want a unit that can proxy as both a Steam Tank and a War Wagon for Marienburg, with the bottom half being a system of wood wheels reinforced by metal bands attached to a steam powered motive system, under an octagonal metal skirt. There would be two top halves to switch between: one would be a howdah style octogonal platform with a tall chimney in the middle, crewed by men armed with handguns and operating deck cannons, and the other would be an octogonal canopy that would terminate into a turret with a cannon on one side of it and a steam gun on the other side, with a chimney sprouting out of the middle of the turret.
Would this be an acceptable proxy?

True enough, but it doesn't change the fact that roughly 50% of the Orcs & Goblins roster is "unavailable" in the TOW range. I only included Night Goblins, I didn't bring up the Arachnorak, goblin spider riders and trolls (only normal trolls are available in metal). I could be missing out some other models as well.

My overall point here is that O&G was released with half their models being "available" and GW has done nothing to fill it up so I have to assume that the intention is to use the AoS range. So there is precedent for GW to release a faction with models in AoS.

The Chorfs releasing on AoS makes things more difficult, but if they stick with the Total Warhammer designs (and perhaps lean a bit more to their 4th edition aesthetics) it may be distinct enough to justify a TOW release.

I don't like him as a Fantasy model. Ranking him up will be a pain in the ass and there's nothing classic about him. He'll look out of place next to the 2004 chaos warriors (though in all fairness GW never made a character model that really fit in with those specific warriors, every lord/hero you place next to them will look wrong, to me at least) and he certainly won't fit in with the 1997 chaos warriors either. He, along with the special chaos sorcerer they made recently, was designed with AoS' chaos "look" in mind, just look at his shield for proof. However, I like the pose, his sword, his helmet (though they really should have left his eye slit black instead of detailing and halfway painting it), and his cloak from a purely aesthetic point of view. Fine for a display piece, not good at all for a gaming piece. Also, I don't like the tactical rock. They need to stop doing that.

Here's a map I made for fun in Inkarnate about the largest settlement on the borders of the Hochgran Woodlands where my beastmen reside. Things are subject to change or edits on the map fyi.

>The Grand Village of Rheiden

Rheiden has a population of roughly 1,300 souls. Most are farmers, loggers, or craftsmen, with the rest made up of traders, priests, and wealthier burghers. The village lies upon a major road, frequented by those traveling west to Grenzburg or beyond that onto Wolfenburg at the foot of the Middle Mountains, or else heading north to the Kislevite port of Erengrad.

Its lifeblood is logging and trade, with only a meagre surplus gained from subsistence farming. The village is divided into four main areas: the commoner quarter, the upper and lower burgher quarters, the guard district, and the noble quarter perched on the highest hill overlooking Rheiden.

The settlement is ruled by the Gemeindherr, the village lord. In the year 2276 this office is held by Archibald von Kraftstal, once a boisterous knight of the Empire. Age has not been kind to him: Archibald has grown fat and complacent, ruling from his hilltop manor where he hosts lavish feasts for minor nobles and wealthy merchants from nearby towns.

Beyond him, the most powerful families are the Derevoka and Tredfell, rival logging guilds whose auctions dominate market days. Their wealth and competition fuel much of the village’s intrigue.

In 2270, Rheiden was attacked by the nascent beastmen warherd of the Horned Moon-Kin, who breached the gates and advanced as far as the Adelring's stone walls before being driven off by the town’s handgunners. They left most of Rheiden in flames as they were driven back to the dark forest.

Today, life continues, villagers trade, work, and pray, yet all are watchful of the treeline. The woodcutters of the great families no longer dare venture as deep into the Hochgran as the forest seems darker than before.

It's probably not very good but if you play casually at a club it's playable, especially if you take the option to dispel with the bloodthirster.
I don't think a full khorne army would be very good in general though.
