I have no interest in a setting set in the Age of Smegmar canon, nor in a game that wants to revision faux-medieval/faux-renaissance Europe as a fantasy Detroit/Los Angeles. Don't think I'm not seeing the out-of-place Southlander tribal all dressed up in imperial garb like he belongs just because they try to hide him in the shadow.

Anonymous No.96676162 [Report] >>96676225
>>96676086
Ah yes, the famously dark moors. Othello was portrayed as black because he was meant to stand out as exotic.

When people point to 'Moore's in that context, they're obfuscating the parlance of the time. 'Black-a-moor' meaning of dark character as an insult but could also refer to actual, physical traits. There were certainly people the Europeans would call moors that were black because the north Africans were connected to sub saharan Africa, but overall and overwhelmingly, they were not black.

Yes. You do realize that the Empire is not Estalia or Tilea, and that "moors" were generally not sub-Saharan negroes, but often construed as such because most had no conception of them whatsoever past exoticist half-men, often included in fantastical stories precisely because of how rare interactions with actual Africans were? Even Arabs outside of Arabia were comparatively rare, and would be from Araby, not the Southlands, and unless you're legitimately mentally stunted, you know full well that they will not treat Southlanders as exotic elements that children come out to jeer at or that noblemen make comments about regarding intrinsic differences or priests discuss whether they have souls and midwives question if the children would come out checkered, you drooling simpleton.
Anonymous No.96676584 [Report] >>96704922

>since moors was general name for north-african saharan muslims.
No. "Moor" is a specific North-African ethbicity, but was, as anon pointed out yet you failed to grasp, also used as a general word for anyone swarthy, but also someone black of character (i.e. inner attributes). This is conpletely keeping with the idea that external attributes mirror internal ones, which was normative well into the renaissance, and honestly dominated in a cultural sense (albeit not as publicly accepted dogma 'obvious' to everyone) into the modern era (that's the 1800's and beyond, for historically illiterate mongoloids).

Not only was Othello likely never intended to be a nigger, but dark of character or hue, but Moors weren't even niggers (not even today, despite added nigger admixture over time), and to the extend that he was actually a nigger/swarthoid/moor, it was precisely because of the absurdity of it and the element of flagrant exoticism.

d100 is as swingy as d20. In majority of game it uses, PCs forced to be incompetent from the start. It works sluggish and contrintuitive with any sort of difficulty modifications and opposite rolls. And its granuality absolutely inadequate for any reasonable design. d100 is for VIBE TTRPG players who enjoy bean counting and rarely GM or homebrew something if ever.

The Old World's place in the timeline is an advantage, it gives the setting a soft reset and lets you do something closer to the tone of 1st edition WFRP, where magic is unregulated and Chaos is poorly understood but on the rise. It's a downright shame the core setting is the fucking imperial heartlands, again, but at least it's during the dark ages when there isn't actually an empire and they shut up about Sigmar for a few centuries.

Rules-wise it looks ok. A basic dicepool system beats out d100 for me anyway. Still, it'll never take off as long as they're trying to support both games.

I'm actually optimistic about the core mechanic.
It's not Xd10 (attribute) + Yd10 (Skill) instead they use Xd10 (attribute) rolled vs skill modified by difficulty. So you won't have giant piles of dice unless they really fuck it up.
Something like Str 3 and Skill 5 ergo you need to roll 1-5 on 3d10 to get 1-3 successes.

So personal biases aside, what is each edition about? I don't mean mechanically but thematically: I heard that 2E takes place in a bad year so everything's fucked and people are struggling to get by while 4E is a bit past the crisis so things are calming down.

Can someone expand on those "themes" for every edition?

>3E - I honestly don't know, but more of 2E I think but edgier
>4E - return to pre-storm of chaos times of 1E with all the modern lore, plus they sneak in some 1E stuff when it doesn't conflict (gnomes, sea elves getting a reference as a subgroup of high elves where originally they were a separate race folded into them, etc)

I don't think it does, as your characterisation doesn't adequately emphasise the difference between 2nd's "post 4th + BL" version of the IP and 4th's "all the modern lore" version. The latter exists in the context of ET, AoS, of the Flanderization of 7th and especially 8th editions of the IP, and of the modern corporate intent to purposefully step back from any aspect of the IP that might be "controversial"(to a lefty-idpol brain) as exemplified by the PG cover featuring a female Bretonnian Knight(not a thing in real WHF[yes I'm aware women do fight as knights in the old fluff, but they universally disguise themselves as male to do so because Bretonnian culture is deeply sexist and does not tolerate openly martial women with literally one single exception in their entire history]), coal-black Imperial soldier(not a thing in real WHF[yes I'm aware that it's technically possible a black person might end up fighting for the Empire, but it's necessary to emphasise how wildly, massively, ludicrously unlikely that is in practice and so using the idea as part of a cover piece that is meant to say to the reader This Is A Typical Party is farcical bollocks]), and a female Dwarf warrior(not a thing in real WHF[and yes, again I'm aware that it is technically possible, but also again it's so wildly unlikely as to be functionally impossible; Dwarfs do not have the same gender balance as humans or the same fecundity of reproduction, if they allow their women to live anything other than protected, cosseted lives as far from anything dangerous as possible they would simply cease to exist as a species within a couple of generations]).

In 2nd edition, WFRP was still being written by people who understood Warhammer for the purpose of appealing to people who liked Warhammer. 4th WFRP(and TOW) are written by people who never liked many aspects of Warhammer, and their target audience are terminally online Bluesky leftoids who think it's heckin' badwrongungood if fictional worlds don't operate exactly according to their own modern idpol "logic".

It really is a silly thing but I feel the same way. Would I care if someone wanted to play a cool character from Estalia or even someone Araby? Of course not.

But for the setting to treat these characters like they wouldn't be a bizarre oddity outside of anything but the largest metropolitan port cities is ridiculous and completely destroys my suspension of disbelief.

Based and same. Could go for a nice gritty low power adventure in the old world. Been a while.
