Spider Man is dogshit, don't bother. Other recent sets have been mostly fine. FF was pretty well received, felt like a Core Set imo. EOE was apparently not well received, but I liked it well enough, it just plays differently. Dragonstorm wasn't great, but that's just my bias against 3c sets.

i think you're basically right. as others are currently talking about itt, the power creep has gotten to a point now where if you don't have immediate removal for a ton of cards in a ton of decks, you just instantly lose. so the only design choice is to make basically every deck have access to cheap spot removal because otherwise there is no game to be played
other card games have gone this way too. it just seems like how games are trending in general these days. people apparently pay the most money for metas where you just vomit out autowins and race to degenerate autowin combos. true "interaction" is a thing of the pass

Trying to cast Jeskai Revelation and Magma Opus a lot after I stabilized the board. I'm actually rarely cheating them out from a graveyard with a gearhulk. After sideboard I sometimes side in Monastery Mentors and have fun with him. My sideboard needs a lot of work. I'd actually like to take out counterspells from the deck and add Consult the Star Charts but that just seems wrong.

Yeah, I was thinking about that too. Manabase might seem a bit queer, and it's mostly that way because I've wanted to put 2 Mystic Sanctuarys in and therefore I've had to put a lot of islands. I'll try put in an anchorage or two instead of an island and a checkland.

I feel like if you're rarely cheating those big spells out you're going to get hosed by aggro which is normal, but also that other control players are also going to have better late payoffs? I don't know how much good red is doing for the list, it seems like you're inviting the weaknesses of WU control without being able to capitalize on the strength of UR spellslinging. It is, but a UW control has the best win percentage in the format and this is mostly for the play queue. I only play Phoenix on the ranked. Gearhulk is the best creature in the format, I swear anon, I'm ready to throw hands for this.

Actually, aggro isn't that big of a problem. Helixes and such are nice in that matchup. The worse matchup is against Bx midrange, they outpace my card draw and put me at a worrying amount of health quickly. Yeah, the end-game is a bit worse than normal UW since I don't have Teferis and such. Flipped Azcanta is the only way I could get some repeated card advantage on a permament and even that isn't as great as Narset's -2. The one thing I like about this deck, in contrast to the regular UW, is that it runs a lot of surveil lands which superpower azcanta and dig through time.
As I've said, the deck is mostly for play queue and for honestly casting big mana Jeskai spells. I might take out fatcasters, put in Inspired Ultimatums, and have some laughs.

I would, but I quite literally don't have the time. I stopped playing BO3 when I had a match take me over an hour and I had to start conceding because I didn't have time to complete the matches.. If I have a 10-20 mins of time, I open arena on my phone and get a match in. It's not uncommon for a match to last 10-15 minutes with me since I enjoy control (it's why I seethe when people rope me).

I'd advise against crafting for brawl. You get tired of the deck a lot faster than the 60 card formats, in my opinion. You'd probably have the most fun with Yshtola. It will be just Esper goodstuff but it will lead to different game experiences than if you'd go with slivers or hamza

Good question and I don't actually know the answer. I've just randomly got stuff since I've played since Beta. As the other anon said, just go for some goodstuff multicolor commander and go from there. Find someone who isn't going for anything specific. There are some cheap crafting commanders, mostly aggro. Anim Pakal, Elsha, and the others. I think my Elsha deck runs almost all commons and uncommons, not counting lands. If I were you, I'd craft the boring stuff first, Chrome mox and such. Take a screenshot of a deck once you build it, I want to see it, anon.

I'll add that while I did already have a bunch of shit from being a longtime Arena player, I do sometimes craft janky shit that is unplayable in any other format. The game has an arbitrary number of prioriities you can respond to before it quick run's out the timer presumably as anti-rope measures.

I say number of priorities but it might be raw time based too as I play in standard UG Omni, when I'm at my pc I have no problem doing marang loops and finishing before that's any problem, but if I decide to play on my phone while at work I slow down just enough to where I will trigger the timer to run even after I pass priority.

It actually inspired a deck change because I was trying to come up with tools to 1 turn ko in the second main after I plop omni down since the decks main weakness is if they can still kill you or reverse the situation when you pass. First I was trying vivi which is what landed me in the timing issues described. Then I went with a 1 of Territory forge to just blow up their lands with marang loops and make passing turn mean nothing.

T3feri is what makes it wild. casting instant speed Days in the draw step after opp draws their card makes them discard their hand and i draw 7 fresh with the additional bonus of Days going to the graveyard to be recycled by another Days because it only has the 'end the turn' clause on MY turn. its kind-of like casting a Time Walk+Timetwister+Mind Twist and usually ends the game on the spot.
you can't play T3feri in Pioneer, but the rest of it is legal afaik.

It's just boardwipe control + artifact o-rings until they can get out their synthesizers or bays. You can go faster than they can manage, bait out their removal piecemeal on cheap creatures that make themselves wide or tall over time, hate on their bays and synthesizers.
Or you can bait them into tapping out to dump their hand and play an artifact boardwipe like Desist or Season of Gathering.

Really it seems most of the decks people bitch about have a reliance on something that's hard to interact with, and just packing stuff that can interact hoses that deck.

Curious if anyone has any experience, I'm likely playing in Championship weekend this month. I have basically no experience in historic, how bad is post board games for the reanimator deck? Obviously being a GY themed deck it definitely takes a beating but wondering if it's the typical post board or if it's like manaless dredge used to be and you just auto lost if they flashed a leyline.

There's also things like UG Kona which is still a losing matchup but it's like 45-55.

playing spiderman draft, opponent plays 6 lands in a row without missing a drop, then i cast wrench and see 6 cards 1 land, he proceeds to draw more gas that draws him even more gas, does not play any more lands, i hold on for like 3-4 more turns, eventually chumping with wrench and i return wrench to my hand from the grave, he still has not played a 7th land, i play wrench again and see 6 spells 1 land AGAIN, he starts his turn, DOESN'T DRAW A LAND, is now using his surveil land and never mills a land to the graveyard, only drawing gas and playing gas off the top, he did eventually play a 7th land, but literally he had like 13 cards left in his deck when the game ended and never played more than 7 lands
was this fucking guy running a fucking 10 land deck and curving out flawlessly? is that the MTGA hack since they rigged the opening shuffle? literally shocked at how much fucking endless gas this guy had
of course my next two games i lost because i was running a normal mana base and y'know, sometimes you lose when you draw lands. maybe i should just start playing 10-land limited decks. that's my takeaway

Discard effects are very often 1-for-1, so you can just outdraw them, you can run counters to the things they do to actually win (typically anti enchantment), you can fit in land cards that turn into creatures

If you're aggro then you just win. If you're control, you have counterspells and inevitability. If you're midrange you have efficient individual threats. If you're combo you lose.
It seems a lot of newbies just concede once their hand is cleared out, but a decent amount of time you can still win off topdecks because a dedicated discard deck is usually pretty slow and now a large chunk of their deck is useless because your hand is empty.

I always forget that Legend was still a creature type in Mirrodin block and was not a super-type till 1 set later. It's the only block with modern frame like this as 8th had no Legendary cards.

Does anybody around here play auction draft? Apparently, back in 2020 some scientists won a Nobel Prize for designing a new type of auction called "simultaneous multiple-round auction", and IMO it seems extremely applicable to MTG.
In an SMR auction: A bunch of items are put up simultaneously. Each bidder is required to submit a bid on each item. Then the bids are revealed. For each item, a losing bidder can either raise his bid or withdraw from the bidding on that specific item. This continues for multiple rounds. Once all losing bidders have withdrawn from the bidding on all items, the auction ends, with the highest bidder on each item getting that item.
SMR auctions are applied to government sales of wireless frequencies in the telecoms field, which often are worth more together than separately due to synergies. Obviously, similar concerns apply to MTG. With this auction type, you can bid for both parts of a combo simultaneously, rather than bidding on one part and hoping that the other part will be available later.
It's easy to imagine an "SMR Auction Draft" format that consists of three separate auctions, one for each play booster.

No, landfall is annoying because it plays a 2-drop, and if you don't remove it instantly, then it swing for 64 damage the next turn. It can be a turn 3 kill, or a turn 4 kill with the security of a 1-mana anti-removal instant

What "cheating"? It's less cheating than half of the other archetypes (vivi cheats mana from a card in the graveyard, reanimator cheats 9-drops on turn 3 or 4). For the first 2 decades of MTG, life gain was a newbie trap mechanism, a mostly useless effect that was almost never played for it's own sake. The problem is Wizard deciding to fix it by giving it to a shitton of easy triggers (creature ETB, your opponent creature ETB, likelink, start of combat, when a creature attacks, creature dies, etc etc) while printing a bunch of cards scaling off these triggers (and in some cases, transfering their scaling to another creature when they die). Lifegain decks are not strong because of the lifegain, but because lifegain is so bad it felt free to slap on everything.
