/osrg/ — Old School Renaissance General
Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to TSR-era D&D, derived systems, and compatible content.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to early Dungeons & Dragons - less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching meta-plots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about. Any OSR games and related topics, including OD&D, AD&D 1e/2e, B/X, NuSR, etc. are welcome here!

We're just waiting for it to get past page 3 before making a proper new thread, as normal. Please report this one for trolling. Thank you.

Fuck 2e and fuck nusr.
Even if they are on topic they are still the most dog shit boring games to exist.

Sorry, this is the new thread. Please dont troll here, post about OSR. r/brosr might be a better place for you if you dont agree with the definition here.

Actually, unlike yourself, instead of complaining I think I'm just going to continue talking about whatever games I'd like.

My favorite mega dungeon is Stone hell by the way, might possibly be the best I've ever encountered, both in terms of content quality and how superbly formatted it is.
Also, ACKS good, 2e bad

I do not agree with your tastes, but you are of course free and welcome to express them. This is the thread for all OSR, so say whatever you wish to say about them, since this is the thread about them.

Though, I do need to at least call you a cunt first. You cunt.

What do you want to say about it?
I heard there was some minor debacle about it recently that turned out to be a nothing-burger.

Have you tried reading the first post of the thread to figure out what is and is not on topic? Because that will make things really easy for you

It's not a bad intro to B/X if you grab Classic or AD&D if you grab Advanced. It basically tried to just streamline and modernize them, with a heavy focus on accessibility and ease of use.

Not my favorite (since it stripped out some things, and then added some meh stuff later), and it's pricey, but I can't say it's a bad way for people new to OSR to start, with the only real caveat that they'd be missing out on some of the... weirdness of the originals, and that weirdness does provide a certain flavor and je ne sais quoi that's often what people are looking for in "old school" games to begin with. The roughness of everything, the effort involved with the rules, it's very much its own experience (though not necessarily a good one for everyone).

Its OK. Its very primitive and in need of bery clear home rulings. My reccommendations would be to pickup Sword & Wizardry or Wight box. You will be fine with those.

Oh WHOOPS i thought you meant OD&D.
Yeah Classic Rules OSE is perfrctly acceptable.
Anonymous No.96959286 [Report] >>96959301

I'd say simplistic over primitive.
Anonymous No.96959301 [Report] >>96959357

OD&D does good things but i dislike the lack of thieves and how wilderness survival+chainmail were literally requkred to make it a complete experience. I prefer BX or BECMI (BX for shorter campaigns, BECMI/RC for long term campaigns) becausr thats a complete package of a game.
Anonymous No.96959357 [Report]
>>96959301
I didn't realize you thought he said OD&D. And yeah, "primitive" is an apt description for OD&D.
Anonymous No.96959491 [Report] >>96959509

Advanced OSE really isn't related to advanced adnd at all, why would you claim this?
Anonymous No.96959509 [Report] >>96959529

Advanced OSE is Classic OSE but with AD&D content converted to work with OSE.
Anonymous No.96959529 [Report] >>96959606
>>96959509
Some content like monsters and classes, but absolutely no systems, rules, nada.
It's just classic with some extra char build options, it's not in any way a transition to what ADND is actually like, nogames
Anonymous No.96959606 [Report]
>>96959529
>Some content like monsters and classes,
Don't forget it also brings in a good chunk of new magic in that bargain.
And, it adds a lot of systems analagous to ones in AD&D (like Weapon Proficiencies), including some almost directly, like how Poison is used.

How do you play it in an Old School style?
I'm guessing heavy use of the Fantasy Companion, heavy emphasis on leaning towards tactical vs. narrative combat; making characters much easier to kill? Fixed class concepts?
I've seen SW used for just about everything, so I don't doubt its versatility. What OSR elements are the ones you think are the most important to your style?

/pol/ bullshit. That's pretty much all they exist for. Pick a target and try to cancel them (if individuals) or disrupt their space (if groups or communities).

https://gwern.net/doc/psychiatry/2014-01-25-cliobelleweisman-theworstpeopleyouhavenevermetdanddonlineharassment.html

Since canceling individuals does not seem to be working less and less now, after the 2020 peak in that kind of politics, they have decided to pick on the small and largely insignificant community that /osrg/ is.

There's also some personal issues that some of them have / had here, so there's a revenge component to it.

Either way, we're not getting rid of them. The administration used to be openly supportive of them. Now they seem to be just complacent and tolerant of them, but I won't be surprised if, with the new round of emails, they'll get another supportive one. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they applied and get one of theirs in.

It follows that it's a war that can't be won here. And since they're escalating by infiltrating discords and doxxing Anons now and nothing is being done about it... well, draw your own conclusions. But it's not just an /osrg/ problem at this point. Or even a /tg/ or 4chan one. They're taking the conflict to other spaces as well.

You clearly can't win here. So either you give up this space, or you start defending yourselves outside of here as well. I'm personally not motivated enough to fight these subhumans, but it's not too hard to figure out what to do about them if you feel like acting.

you need a magic weapon to hit a gargoyle. standing near it, poking it, hitting it, etc. would do nothing. gargoyles are intelligent and you fell for it’s trick, DUMBASS! this is why ignorant jackass players should stay away from the monster manual
