Preorders are usually free, and most places won't require a deposit. I've cancelled orders based on underwhelming releases before myself and it's never that big a big deal. Even for fully paid orders you can explain that you've seen reviews and don't want the figure anymore, just ask for store-credit and they are likely to grant that to you because they still keep the money.
