Share and discuss interesting toylines from around the world. I've gone down the rabbit hole of Brazillian toylines.

Im sure most /toy/ soldiers remember the Dinonautas fondly but they're rarely discussed these days. Can any Brazilfags enlighten us on the state of this range? Are they still selling?

Most of the examples I have worth discussing come from Brazil, but Im eager to learn about lines from other corners of the globe.

Brazillian toy company Gulliver Brinquedos has a long history in the domestic market from what I gather. It was founded sometime in the 1960's by a Spanish entrepeneur and kept chugging along into the modern day. Like Brazil's other major domestic toy companys prior to opening up to global trade, Gulliver made a killing in localizing American and European toys. Their biggest success coming from the localization of Diamond Toy Makers' 4' Commando range, rebranded as "S.O.S. Commandos". Early on it ditched any ties to the Schwarzenegger film, eventually including Rambo in the line, and then continuing from then all the way until 2011. Towards the end of the 90's the commandos began to incorporate molds from both Chap Mei and Lanard Toys. Not just for the vehicles and weapons, but even the figures themselves. Often frankensteining together parts to make new characters.

Pic related are the 2025 revival re-releases.

Early on the collection was simply a repackage of the Diamond Commando toyline. But, because Gulliver had the Secret Wars molds, the decision was made to incorporate both the Heroes in Action/ Secret Wars Turbocopter and the Turbocycle in the line. Given their 4 inch scale they paired well with these vehicles. Gulliver continues to rerelease that Mattel Helicopter to this day, sometimes even without figures, and thus many variations of it now exist.

In the 90's Gulliver would once again make use of those Secret Wars molds with their "Future Warriors" collection. The Future Warriors were effectively a 1990's update to Secret Wars. They largely featured new heads but were in effect just an interesting collection of mismatched repaints.

Interestingly the S.O.S. Commandos share some DNA with the now infamous Airgam Comics collection. A Spanish range of offbrand superheroes done in a playmobil style back in the 1980's. Airgam itself was once a big player in the Spanish toy market, but once Spain liberalized and opened upto international trade they went under. I assume Gulliver Brinquedos was able to get the mold of the terror copter accessory in the fallout of Airgam's demise, however it does lead me to wonder why they didnt pursue the other airgam vehicle molds. The Commandos could have really benefitted from additional vehicles and a headquarters playset. Both of which Airgam had in spades.

Some loose examples of the S.O.S. Commandos.

I always find it funny that they made an African variant of Schwarzenegger/Matrix (renamed Cronos in this line). Later on they even added an arab, complete with turban, to the toyline.

Throughout the early years the figures would come packaged with minicomics but I cant add much there since scans are hard to come across online. Subsequent releases would drop this, as well as the card art stolen from the 1988 Italian film "Fists of Steel" overtime. Later "wave" would adopt more generically militaristic packaging. Most of which tried to keep up with the times by featuring 3D renders of the characters along with action movie styled fonts.

Also worthing mentioning the S.O.S. Commandos, because of itheir cheaper price point, came to outsell FalCon (A.K.A. GiJoe) in the Brazillian market.

A look at the Diamond Toy Makers original John Matrix for comparison.

Around the time Gulliver acquired the Rambo license, a seperate series of 8 inch scaled versions of all the characters was released. These 8 inch figures were repurposed from Toy Island's Video Command colelction, just swapping the heads out for the heads Diamond made for their 6' figures. I mention this foot note because I find it really admirable that they would go to such lengths just to release a series of companion characters to the Coleco Rambo collection which had released nearly a decade earlier.

It's such a ridiculously versatile mould isnt it? In its complete form it just radiates vietnam war era military grit. But once its stripped of the missile launchers, turret platform, and nose art it has such a cutesy dinky look to it.

Looking back on the Heroes in Action line is pretty fascinating too. The actual characters were all largely static and limited to about 3 poa a figure. They also had a shitload of other vehicles in the collection Im surprised Mattel never tried to get more mileage out of.

>Brazillian Dinosaucers
Verbatim yes. For some reason Sony buried the series. Galoob made figures for the cartoon back in the day but a series of complications led to Brasil being the only country to actually manufacture those toys. Thus they're incredible rare and sought after now.

One day, completely out of the blue, a newbie toy company by the name of Show Toys came out with these. Before the Dinonauts they largely just produced baby dolls and roleplay items. So you can imagine how much of a surprise these guys were back in 2022. Since then the fervor has died down considerably but Im still pretty in love with them. I just wish it didnt cost so much to import the fucking things.

I've also noticed the Brazillians have this love affair with HUGE toys. Another major manufacturer down there specializes exclusively in these jumbo recreations of pop culture characters, usually made out of soft plastic snd vinyl, that I cant help but balk at. They're very affordable for the size that they are.

Crazy that we're at the point with some of these collector items where it would be cheaper to go to Brazil in person and buy one for yourself instead of ordering it offline. The widespread decision to ignore the demand for generic military toys is really a shame isnt it? Nowadays we have a ton of Gi Joe spiritual successors alongside the classified line so it's not that bad, but Hasbro really has squandered GI Joe and nobody has attempted to muscle in on that vacant niche. Upto this point Chap Mei was their only real competition.

Knowing how much fanfare still exists for Rambo I keep hoping one of these mainstream indie companies grabs up the rights to the Forces of Freedom series and attempts to revive it. How it hasnt happened already baffles me. Even Nacelle passed up the chance and settled for Barnyard Commandos instead.

Well alot of the modern lines are all harkening back to ARAH. That's why you see all these modern o-ring releases. Outside of that it's largely limited to Classified, Valaverse, and all the off shoots there of. The stylized cartoonishly aggressive approach one associates with the Commando Elite sadly died off towards the end of the 2000's. The last vestiges of it can only really be seen in examples like Gi Joe Extreme, Gi Joe Sigma 6, and the handful of Lanard Corps product that still manages to eek out now and then. Funnily enough Lanard did try to tap back into that aesthetic a decade ago with " The CORPS ELITE" (pic related) but they fell on hard times ever since Walmart dropped their product lines.

Over the last few years they've released a few note worthy Corps vehicles along with reissues of the Primal Age line. They even tried dipping their toes into the 6 inch range, but this was all in an attempt to cash in on the aforementioned ARAH/Classified hype.

Gi Joe Extreme really could have benefitted by ditching the preposed angle. It's obvious that Kenner was chasing the X-mania of the time but I believe that ended up dooming the line from the onset. These are basically offbrand tpybiz action figures.

Alot of Kenner duds from the 90's work as decent military fodder fwiw. The grunts from the Congo line, a few of the JP peg warmers. these guys, etc.

Having mentioned JP some of the mattel product is dipping its toes into military themes but it's also 3.75'.

Gonna bump with another foreign line, this time a mexican one. I remember when this series saw brief discussion on here a few years back. Courtesy of Grupo Ruz, "Beasts vs Robots". Modularity seems like a big focus. The figures do alot to remind me of Xevoz.

I've noticed alot of these modern day original toylines always attempt to cast a wide net in their branding. Jakks tried something similar with their "Beasts. Alien. Mechs - BAM" collection.

I was referencing these sort of lines. The mexican version of Adventure Force is alot more expansive for whatever reason. They have tons of random scales and sub-lines, some borrowed from lanard, some seemingly original, others imported from china. It's a fun mixed bag. When the titan hero shampoo bottle styled figures took off in LatAm these showed up shortly after. At first it was a whole range of tacticool military ninja guys, then they went with this power rangers meets battle beasts theme that has gone on for a few years now. Dinosaurs, jungle animals, space aliens. There's little they havent covered.

Within the last 6 months there was a Filipino anon who showed off some of the exclusive toylines from his neck of the woods. It was a series of little monsters that came with vehicles that could be turned into armor and weaponry. I thought it was fun. That said it is odd how the Filipinos forsaken their domestic capeshitters. They had a veritable equivalent to Stan Lee in Mars Ravelo, and despite decades worth of media, there really arent many official toys based off his characters.

Sony's decision to bury Dinosaucers is never going to make any sense. It was an absolutely massively popular series in LatAm from what I can tell, doing very well in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, and even Chile. It even seems to have done decent numbers domestically in the U.S. , but for whatever reason they just tossed it into the Columbia vault.

I know Super7 has plans for Tigersharks figures now, but for alot of these overlooked and now obscure franchises a proper DVD or Bluray release would go a long way in generating hype for merchandising.

This is one of the reasons I love MOTU and Secret Wars so much. Both lines get so much mileage out of their shared parts and it's a testament to how well designed the figures were that different paint and accessories can make a figure feel so unique and different.

All the Argentine MOTU successor lines scratch that itch too. The layman probably just sees mishmashed repaints, but these guys are their own characters in my eyes.

>Within the last 6 months there was a Filipino anon who showed off some of the exclusive toylines from his neck of the woods. It was a series of little monsters that came with vehicles that could be turned into armor and weaponry.
This one? It's also a NZ toyline since the country is just south of it

I always hated how the cool dinos were antagonists and vice versa. Extreme Dinosaurs did it best

Yeah that's the one! They look so fun.

The cooler dinosaurs being antagonists is part of the fun I think. I agree though, Extreme Dinosaurs managed to balance things out alot more.

You think thats why origins is modular? Like a wink to those knock off lines that mattel isnt going to bother with (despite many calls for them to do so).so they gave us the chance to diy those figures? Ive never really considered the reason of why origins is modular actually, despite collecting them since the wweternia stuff began.

Yeah Im almost certain that's why they ended up being modular. MOTU managed to maintain a lively fandom for decades without Matty's involvement and a big part of that was through customs, resin bootlegs. and actual knock offs. Definitely seems like Matty went for "the ball is in your court" approach but then it feels shortsighted considering how they're scraping the bottom of the barrel instead of dipping into more bootleg lines. Origins is nearly all crossovers or nostalgic double dipping now. I'd rather see Fuerza T.

Probably some right issues. Or the time frame? I know it was kinda popular in Europe too. But i think it was 3 years later that they aired it in Spain in 1990 and than 1992 in Germany. They still aired the re-runs for some years.

It might have been the result of Coca Cola selling Columbia to Sony in the first place. Hard to say at this point. Just sad to see a show like that get buried. If you ask me all those silly toy cartoons should be readily availible. I'm genuinepy annoyed the likes of Turbo Teen and Tigersharks border on lost media.

Guess there is alot of shit happening when companies buy assets just for the purpose of securing rights to something than planning on doing something.

All it would take is for one company to crack the seal and everyone else would come rushing out for a slice of the pie. Thundarr, Tigersharks, Dinosaucers, Bionic Six. It's juat crazy how much is out there yet most companies rely on the same dozen to half dozen ips.

The problem is that those concepts are cool but you need customers and money.
And there are many toys and IPs outthere to choose from. Big competition for attention and money spending.

>Look up an Allosaurus
>It's just a slightly smaller T-Rex with a crest on its face.
>The heroes also got a triceratops and a stegosaurus.

I think it was a fair trade-off. Also, I just found out the show has been pulled from the Internet Archive.
