Did you ever have to sell part of your collection to make rent or cover an emergency expense?

No. I've only sold because I lost interest in a franchise, a better figure of the same character came out, or I needed to clear up some shelf space.

Nope, because I buy responsibly and if I don't have money I don't buy toys.

I *should* sell off stuff to help fund a mancave, because after 20ish years of buying things to not sell I'm very much running out of room.

I did. We had to move but I didn't have a job yet. Took a long while and selling my collection was the only way to contribute. Luckily I had a lot to sell. It was during my earliest years of collecting, and realized I didn't like everything I bought. Merely bought just because and only then I learned to only buy what id truly value.

Never. Ever since I bought my Playstation 3, I have been using my Paypal account in a refinancing type of way for my hobbies
>no proper connection to my bank account
>all the money is generated through selling multiples or older figures for higher prices

That way, my bank account is left untouched and I generally don't spend money on any type of shit that is not related to food or travelling.
I also don't buy figures for no reason. I simply collect the ones I really want, especially teams like the Justice League. That way, I don't have too many figures in general

Careful, anon.
Depending on your country of residence, Paypal sends automatic alarms to the tax authorities if you exceed a certain revenue treshhold.
In Germany for instance you can only sell personal items on ebay up to 2000€ a year without paying taxes. That's revenue, not profit btw. I think there's an exception for cars but otherwise you're fucked. I try to do as many cash transactions as possible.
The government are all Hurensöhne.

NTA but I know that the government (also Germany here) wants to get its grubby mitts on whatever money you're making from selling, as if you were automatically a business if it's over a certain amount. But
>starts as low as 2000€
>Paypal sends automatic alarms to the tax authorities
That can't be right?

Yes, sold off my premium hot wheels, Mini GT, Kaido House etc last month to make ends meet. And majority of my 40k shit over the last few years. Because I'm tired of both. Still have boxes upon boxes of HW mainlines, but selling them is PITA, so I guess I'll just donate them.

Only unopened stuff. I realized the major toy makers will reissue or remake figures every other year so I sold some higher priced items like retro card Marvel Legends Beast to cover a portion of my rent. another one was SS Bumblebee Starcream i picked up for $5 at WM. never opened it and sold for $90. Same with the SS86 hotrod, also got it for $5 at the same time.

15 years ago, the county I worked at implemented a stricter teacher license rule in that I needed to go to grad school if I wanted to basically keep my job.
The win-win was that I would get a masters degree and bump up my salary quite a bit so I sold my 90s toys and managed to pay the tuition with no problem.
I even told my evening classmates and some lauded my for efforts (I'm sure some of them thought I was the main character from 40 year old virgin but whatever).

Got through 2.5 years of boring classes, got the degree, enjoyed the bump in salary, and bought more toys. Life was toughat the time but it worked out in the end.

Nope. Only sold things I no longer had interest in, thankfully.

One time when I was moving states, I sold a few things I wasn't 100% sure I was ready to part with, but I already had too much shit to pack.

In the end, I was glad I sold what I did.

I have seen a lot of people doing that but I don't get how it makes much difference for one's financial situation. Unless you keep things MIB, opened collections aren't gonna add that much to your bank account plus getting every item sold will take months so you won't get emergency cash right away
