With so many cool toys and figures out there how do you prevent your room(s) from looking like an exploded toy shop? Even if you place everything neatly if the toys vary to wildly it still looks like patchwork. Do you limit yourself to just one franchise, one sort of scale or company? How do you resist the temptation to by cool toys from franchises you don't know or care about?

I got to a point where I had 3 bookshelves and a detolf full of shit and I just purged it all. I sold thousands of dollars of shit to a LCS for pennies on the dollar just to rid myself of it.

It's important to be intentional or you'll end up with a mountain of shit.

Same here. My unit needed repairs so I had to buy big plastic bins to keep my shelf toys safe. This made it easier for me to review and rearrange the toys I want to actually keep til they are fated to be given away. I'm always going to buy what I like whether or not I'm a fan, because this method has only made collecting fun for me. As for being a hoarder, that's inevitable, but I still set things aside to give away

I just don't buy that much stuff and sell things I no longer care about to make space

>How do you resist the temptation to by cool toys from franchises you don't know or care about?
Not too hard for me. If I don't know or like the character, I don't feel like I need to have the figure.

I don't get the mentality of collecting from something I have no interest in. Even when I was given a patlabor toy as a kid, I had 0 interest because I didn't know what it was and eventually made myself watch the franchise before deciding to keep it or not. I limit myself to only buying figures from Japanese mangas I have read and in the case of Marvel, comics I've read.

sometimes us old dudes will buy stuff from new franchises if a design stands out.
Ben 10 is made by guys who liked toku and worked on comics and other similar interests so it's not surprising someone might like a few designs from it.

Is it just me, or do people who only collect one franchise and absolutely nothing else creep you out too?

Like, a person who has made their entire identity about collecting only star wars, or only he-man. I can't help but wonder how they don't get bored.

I have different shelves dedicated to different franchises/teams. Keeps things sorted. Then I don't display everything as well. I have a bunch of stuff stored away in totes.

This isn't difficult for me. I generally don't buy stuff from franchises I don't know unless I can't blend them in with other franchises. For instance, I got the Fortnite Playing Card guy, a few of him, because they can work well as Royal Flush Gang or Joker Henchmen for my Batman displays. I've gotten a few GI Joes here and there because there more generic and can be used as background characters for toy photography. If I buy something from a franchise I don't know that well, it has a specific purposes to fit in with a franchise I do know.

If anything I wonder how much better off I would be if I stuck to one thing. I get that a wall or room of just one franchise seems excessive,e specially when it's shit that's clearly filler or tied to versions no one likes except apologists , but at the same time it can be a measure of discipline

By looking around my office and deciding I don't really like the new stuff enough to turn my collection into a hoard. I went from spending thousands a year to maybe a few hundred a while ago and started putting away the stuff I didn't mind not seeing. What I really need to do is start selling off some of that stuff but that's a lot of effort.

I don't. I've more or less embraced it and have it all neatly displayed, mostly in glass shelves on risers and contained to my home office. But I've been collecting 15+ years and even with selling some over time, it's 300-400 figures. I have more than I ever expected to and at times it feels like a burden. Fortunately, my enthusiasm for the hobby is finally cooling down and the collection feels pretty complete atm. On the rare occasion when I do buy a new figure nowadays, I also get rid of one so the horde doesn't grow any further.
>Do you limit yourself to just one franchise, one sort of scale or company?
I limit myself to 1/12-1/10 and tend not to buy more than one of the same character(transformations don't count) but that's it really.
>How do you resist the temptation to by cool toys from franchises you don't know or care about?
Nostalgia's the biggest motivator for me in this hobby. Most of the lines I collect are of franchises I've followed since I was a child or teenager. If I'm really interested in a figure, I'll look into the franchise first and see if I like it. I've bought one OC in all this time, Snail Shell's Lustia, and haven't opened her yet.

My advice would tlbe to have a dedicated display place for your toys, a spot with a specific function and separation makes the most sense (i.e. a book case with separated cells, and endtable not connected to functional furniture like a dining room table, somewhere where the figs on display have a purpose and not a kitchen counter or the like).
When you have your display area selected, tastefully build a scene or display. Take time placing and posing your figures, that can be the most fun part of owning them! Use your imagination and personal taste to set the scene and tone of your display.
Limit your figures only to that display. Once it is filled (tastefully, not jam packed with figs in static poses), place the rest of your items in a designated storage spot. Mine is a walk-in closet with a large plastic dresser and shelving. When you grow tired of your current display, put your figures back where they belong in the storage area, and select new ones to display. While you are putting your toys away in their specific drawers, you'll probably come across a figure that you live and haven't handled in a while, so build a scene around them! I hope this advice helps.

>how do you prevent your room(s) from looking like an exploded toy shop?

Related to what >>11495033 said I have two dedicated spaces. One is mostly static and half filled with comics. The other rotates and is comprised of no more than three scenes/mini displays. One of the things you used to see posted often here is that less is more.

>Even if you place everything neatly if the toys vary to wildly it still looks like patchwork.

To appreciate the two displays in your image you'd have to stand ten feet or more back. It looks like hoarding because it is hoarding. There's no way to view and appreciate each toy there every day. Rotate, rotate, rotate.

>Do you limit yourself to just one franchise, one sort of scale or company?

INB4 scale flaming. Mostly 1:12.

>How do you resist the temptation to by cool toys from franchises you don't know or care about?

What matters is if and how long you care about the toy. I could have bought McFarlane Supergirl at retail but I knew i'd care for about a week. That i'd probably never even pose or photograph it. I don't really collect DC but that didn't stop me from buying Power Girl. I've had her out in a pose from a cover for some months now. Do you want it now or will you still want it a year from now?
