Comfy thread for this now obscure Kenner IP that was meant to compete against G.I. Joe and Transformers. The action figures were smaller than G.I. Joe but they were about the same scale as Dino-Riders. It had a cartoon that ran for a few seasons and was then canceled after it went from being about an ongoing war between MASK and VENOM (they are both acronyms with very silly meanings) to being a about the two groups having races, likely due to complaints about violence in kids' cartoons in the late 1980s.

It's getting a remake toyline in the same scale as the original, licensed by Hasbro to Loyal Subjects. As far as I know Loyal Subjects are not planning to make a toy of the submararine car the Shark which was infamously missing from the original line, however Ramen Toy already has an unauthorized one for sale that looks good (albeit, it's even more expensive than the officially licensed remake toys).

I just wish Ramen's MASK toys weren't so fuckin' expensive. The Shark costs more than the BBTS exclusive variant of the Semi which is the most expensive toy in Loyal Subjects' line, not to mention it's an order of magnitude larger than the Shark and comes with 4 figures instead of 1. I get that these are niche items and that Loyal Subjects' toys are technically on the expensive side too, although I do think it's worth noting that Loyal Subjects is paying for the license from Hasbro and Ramen is not.

I'm guessing that bare minimum the helmets are gonna cost $200 but I wouldn't be at all surprised if they end up being $400 since they're even more niche than the vehicle and figure sets.

(Having said that I'll still probably end up getting the Shark because I don't really expect Loyal Subjects to make one since it never had a toy in the original line, which they seem to be emulating as faithfully as possible but alass that means our girl Gloria's signature vehicle gets overlooked again.)

Not really. Gen-X collectors remember it as the line that saved Kenner's ass after Star Wars got its ass kicked by Transformers, He-Man/She-Ra, and GI Joe in 1985, and have been hounding Hasbro for new stuff for the past two decades.

No-one can deny that MASK deserves its good reputation with 80s cartoon and toy fans, however it has not had a toy line since the 1980s, whereas the likes of He-Man, GI Joe and Transformers have been enjoyed by multiple generations of kids, whereas Mask is in the "you had to be there" category which is unfortunate.

I was a 90s kid and one of our local channels ran reruns of the MASK cartoon, which is how I knew about it. I loved the cartoon and wanted the toys really badly, but I didn't know at the time that the toyline had been out of stores for a couple years by the time I saw the cartoon. I saw one or two of the toys at other kids' houses over my childhood years but sadly I never owned any myself, so I'm pretty excited that they're getting remade after all this time.

In other words, it's not done to death. We already have 100 versions (each) of Darth Vader, Optimus Prime, He-Man, Spider-Man, and so on.

But MASK is fresh and new to everyone but Gen-X. So it has all the potential in the world. Then again, Wheeled Warriors and Starriors also have that potential.

Hasbro has a chance to push M.A.S.K. with the new energon universe comic, although they're using the IDW universe black Matt Trakker design (because duke and trakker look pretty similar in their original designs). Time will tell where it goes as Trakker's only made one appearance in the 2025 special.

hopefully sly rax gets to keep his sick-ass moustache in the energon universe.

Also, Dr. Quest is cool. Mostly because without Dr. Quest we wouldn't have Dr. Venture.

did venture brothers ever do a mask reference? They did a degrassi reference of all things, so I know they watched some tv older than Johnny Quest and other cartoons from 1964

I doubt it but it's been a long time since I've watched the show. There's only a few transformers references from what I remember, but G.I. Joe on the other hand basically inspired like at least two seasons worth of plot points with the O.S.I. and SPHINX.

No one that was good at drawing watched MASK, if the fan art is any indication. There might be 10 good photos online of any of the typical waifu characters.

Real shame, vanessa warfield has a design made for it.

Just give Matt Trakker glasses if he looks too much like Duke. People are sick of race bending.
