I am new to buying Lego. How long do I have to get this haunted mansion set before its impossible to find? Does Lego stuff tend to be available for a while or do I need to jump on stuff the second I see it?

Set will be in production until 2027 so you have time, though from my experience, sets tend to have the best deals during their first year of production. Personally I'd get the set ahead of Halloween because it will be expensive then.

So, tldr:

I extend this attitude to any set that comes in the sleek black 18+ boxes. I don't want busts, figurines, or huge Lego builds, I like small and medium size playsets that I can rebuild or join together if I so decide.
I just assume that anything that has a black box is meant to be displayed rather than played with.

Well considering there's no way the rest of the 20 sets are black box adultslop, it seems like the idea is to release the biggest, most expensive sets first to entice the adults (and kids with rich parents) who just can't wait to get their hands on it, and then going ahead with the smaller, more affordable stuff. Someone who can get their fix with the small sets is less likely to buy the big ones later on, so it makes sense to limit the selection at the beginning to the fuckhuge dust collectors. They did the same thing with Fortnite to a lesser degree, with the only minifig set being 100 bucks. It's pretty brilliant on Lego's part, but also cynical, bleak, and somewhat hellish.

There's so much about this that I don't understand.

First off, why the fuck are they STARTING with the adult sets? Pokemon is the biggest property in the world and highly popular with all ages. The expensive tentpole sets being all that there are in the first wave basically means children, who are the largest demographic for Pokemon (and the most easily influenced demographic for initial product hype, might I add), are not going to have these bought for them. Smaller sets in the 30-60 dollar range would yield a greater profit for the first wave, not to mention the bulk mould manufacturing from the start would mean cheaper production costs for the entire theme over time. It's less money for each set, yes, but a far greater number of total sets sold AND a greater production saving, by several orders of magnitude. It's obvious to me, so it should be obvious to Lego and TPC.

Secondly, frontloading 18+ like this also sends the wrong message to parents, who when asked in FUTURE for the more reasonable sets, might assume that every set is hundreds of dollars. Before you say "this is a false concern, exaggerating, etc", this actually happened to my friend back when the Death Star came out twenty years ago when we were children. His family basically refused to buy him any Star Wars sets because they didn't understand that the small sets are not even in the same league of piece count, let alone price. They thought that the "small" sets weren't actually "small", just that they were just slightly less expensive. That was several hundreds of dollars of worth of sets that Lego completely missed out on through no fault of their own. Now imagine that in a preventable situation like this, except multiplied by at least one thousand. It's such a terrible thing to communicate to clueless parents!

It's so strange, and such a bizarre strategy for a property like Pokemon. Do Lego not realize that the release format they have for UCS Star Wars isn't optimal here?

LEGO/Nintendo have done the market research and are clearly confident that this is going to make all parties involved a fuckton of money.

LEGO have been doing this with expensive moulds. designer behind the scenes videos where they talk about their "budget" and "design constraints" in simple language. Having the manufacturing team go on record showing how """premium""" the bricks are. So on and so on.

I assumed LEGO Pokemon would be closer to a City/Friends theme, with lots of little/medium sized sets aimed at kids, featuring Poke Centers, Pokemarts, random routes with an assortment of Pokemon in minifig scale. I don't know why they're experimenting with gimmicks for the first year of a theme that has the potential to be the most important IP license since Harry Potter, but if it's any consolation, it's basically a given that normal sets will be introduced year two and onwards, if not from the start. Nintendo forced LEGO to do the classic "Nintendo twist" (IYKYK) with the Super Mario sets and while successful enough to have many waves over the years, they haven't exactly set the world on fire in the way that everyone hoped they would, and the electronic element of the builds has been met with ridicule from day one.
Everyone in charge has picked up on this which is why Super Mario is all but confirmed to be switching to minifig scale next year, the same year that Pokemon is starting... what a coincidence!
This will also give TLG stronger leverage when it comes to renew the license(s) or cut their losses early (not the latter would ever happen, it's too profitable, but executives love when they have coverage, so this is still an import factor).

Translucent colors aren't the problem. There are far too many opaque colors and the way they make them doesn't keep them consistent. Take lime, for instance, if you grab one type of piece in lime and a different piece in that same shade, there is a significant chance that they don't match. We recently heard news of a Sauron minifigure coming in a $70 set, after he was included in the $400 Barad-Dûr set.

Similarly, Captain Rex was in the Venator and then later appeared in a microfighter. Maybe we'll get the bridge or transporter room down the line with the minifigures. My ideal idea would be to make midi-scale ships with minifigures, where each ship comes with a minifigure so they can reuse the molds.
