I'm thinking about going in january/february/march since flights are cheaper and it won't be overcrowed with normies.

It snows at most once or twice in Tokyo during winter. You would be lucky if you experienced snow in Tokyo, even then everything will melt away the following day because it will barely be a few mm of snowfall.

Why would museums be closed in winter? Tokyo in winter is just...Tokyo...but slightly cold, people wearing winter clothing, with the sun rising at 7am and setting at 4pm. Only big change is you'll see more oden being sold everywhere. Winter is very dry in Kanto and you'll have clear blue skies all day, making it the perfect weather for just strolling around.
If you've been to Chinese cities during CNY, then it's a similar thing during New Year's in Japan where the big cities are empty and most shops are closed, even places like groceries close, so avoid this period unless you want to risk the places you plan on going to being closed.

I'm going solo in December, but I still haven't decided where to go.
I'll be landing in Tokyo and I can go East towards Tohoku or catch a flight to Shikoku or Kyushu. Not sure which region is the best to visit around this time of the year.
Is there a probability of catch bad weather in Tohoku that can ruin the trip?

I was there this March. Everything was open. Slightly chilly but not a big deal. Didn't feel too crowded. January/February might be worse since it's colder and the cheaper hotels don't have great heating.

I went in March this past year. I couldnt go to every single museum obviously but I didn't run into any issues with any of the museums I went to although I only went to a couple (and one was the Peace Museum in Hiroshima so not even Tokyo). I didnt experience any issues with anything being closed while I was there, museums, shops, shrines, or anything

It even snowed while I was there which was very nice and pretty.

But the thing with Japan now is that no matter when you go it's going to be crowded. Of course certain times are going to giga crowded like April/May and July/August, but even when I was there in March it felt super busy and I saw tons of foreign tourists especially around Shinjuku and Akiba.
My guess for the time with the least foreigners would be December since I imagine you'll filter out a ton of foreigners that don't want to do a big trip so close to Christmas. Don't do January, the start of the new year is a big time in Japan and a lot of natives take time off then.

No. Such an overrated place. I went to a bunch of the big museums that are all in that park and it was meh. Arcades aren’t that cool. Cafes suck and coffee is expensive. Asians are asexual and unattractive. OMG Nintendo store!!! Pokémon store!!!! Salmon sashimi shipped in from Norway!!! I like the hostel culture though. There is this massive American style myth propagated online that Japan is cold in Winter. It's not it's actually really fucking pleasant it's like an extended late autumn with plenty of plants alive. I am from Central Europe where nature dies and snow falls. This is WINTER. Most of Japan has a climate like southern coastal Italy/Spain/Greece in Winter.

It depends where you go, the Tokyo winter is not bad and in southern Japan it's still pretty warm in winter. Northern Honshu (Miyagi/Yamagata and northwards) can get quite cold especially if you're used to a warm climate and there can be a lot of snow, particularly inland. Hokkaido is very cold.

I lived in various climates and Tokyo has this weird thing where it genuinely feels 10 degrees colder in the winter than the temperature indicates. I still haven't really understood this because I would expect humid winter to be worse but somehow Tokyo just feels fucking cold despite the temperature only being around 0°C. Tokyo won't be lovely and warm. I landed at Narita in mid november and transfered straight to Sapporo and all that I could see of Fuji was covered in snow, yes its a tall mountain. I've been everywhere in Winter in Japan twice for 90 days.

The north aka Hokkaido gets proper cold by Central Europen standard I'm talking -20°c.

The Tohoku region gets around 0°c and has the most snow in the world. Here Hirosaki Castle in a snow storm I was the only person in the park felt amazing.

Niigata also gets a lot snow, and sometimes Ishikawa (Kanazawa).

But from as far as the Shinaknsen Goes from Tokyo Westwards it's a forever Autumn/Fall. Day temperatures are 10~15°c night drops to like 5~10°c on average. It's a joke I can't call it winter. I 100% understand why Japanese people outside of Hokkaido don't have central hating you can heat a room with an AC just perfectly fine to 23°c.

All Museums are open, there less open air stuff like festials. But all the comikets, comitias, wonder fests and so on are on.

If you're a big museum guy I recommend https://www.rekibun.or.jp/en/grutto/ gets you into most museums.

You'll find that nature in Winter is still colorful but weirdly so. At least in the Tokaido Shinkansen and Kyushu Shinaknsen parts.

Grass looks like straw, most parks are open in winter and you can still get quite a nice walk and view in them. It has this unqiue atmosphere you usually don't see.

I dressed in my standard autumn clothes all the time I was in Tokyo. Well this isn't Tokyo this is Okayama. But like for me Tokyo winter was simply a joke. I'm used to -10°c in Winter and Tokyo was 10°c it felt oddly warm at it was the perfect weather for going up mountains around Tokyo like I went to

I dunno why people get so obsessed with tokyo. The urban jungle is immense, I know its alluring, but after awhile I get tired of it, you must spend around 1h minimum to get to the outskirts of the concrete sprawl (not counting nozomi) and even with many different district Tokyo feels a bit like one trick pony.
I know osaka dont have /trv love, but I prefer it much more because of the closeby alternatives to the megacity feel. They are easier to reach and are more plentiful.
/jap general doomers will yell that dotonbori is full of chinks ect, but still I prefer its crowd much more than smth like asakusa or shibuya, which is a real horror.
Tokyo is perfect for short duration trips or buisness trips with few days to spare for leisure. More than one week in tokyo, especialy if youve been there before, is a waste for me.
Maybe people like it because they watched lost in translation or smth, or maybe they just prefer tokyo vibe in favor of japan atmosphere.
