Homeless people around the world
I live in Portland Oregon. I recently took a trip to a couple countries in Europe and the homeless situation there is vastly different. I saw one or two “camps” but they were clean and neat and the dudes had a bunch of chairs arranged in a circle where they’d just smoke cigarettes and drink. As opposed to here there are screaming fentanyl psychos who carry around piles of trash. I’m asking, what’s the difference? Why do the homeless over there conduct themselves with more grace? Is it the drugs? Do euros lock them up in asylums or something?

If you’re taking about Barcelona, (that’s where your photo is so I’ll assume that’s where you’re referring to) - the city actually does a pretty good job helping out those that actually want help. The city has problems like anywhere else, no doubts about it, but the homeless/mental illness issue is very, very managed and well maintained from a care/shelter/healthcare perspective in this city as things go.

There are skid-row type places in Europe like Frankfurt, Athens also has a big issue with the homeless and drugs, but it can be seen all over poorer parts of Greece and that region in general. Glasgow and Dublin have more than their fair share, but they’re more miscreants that you could actually have a reasonable conversation with, sometimes.

I think the biggest, main, most glaringly obvious reason however, is that if you’re severely mentally ill, on the streets and scaring people, you’re almost certainly going to be taken away, sectioned and thrown into a mental hospital in Europe. Doesn’t happen 100% of the time, and there’s always a few that slip through the cracks, but it definitely has an effect.

This stopped happening in the US a long, long time ago.

The ones left in the streets in Europe, for the most part, are the sane/normal ones who have a bad habit and can’t get away from the unfortunate street life.

I went to Barcelona, Lyon, Rome, Paris, Belgium, and a couple small towns in between. I never saw it as bad as I see it back home. Nobody had a shack loaded up on a pallet jack ready to move three streets away because the police harassed them.

We give them trillions of dollars in subsidies each year. Europe functions the way it does because they are ripping us off. That's why they're getting tariffed so they can pay us back and we can take care of our own people. Right now there's no money for our own homeless because our government gave it all away.

There's plenty of money to go around. Don't blame us because you waste it on forever wars in the Middle East instead of spending it on healthcare or education.
And don't you dare cut us off or you WILL be isolated on the world stage.

Then there's the random drunkard throwing bottles in Paris under the bridge, which was pretty scary, or the usual two crackheads in Madrid Metro, but they were pretty chill.
But the US seems to be pretty different. As there are a lot more on the West Coast that impressed my third-world fellow in San Francisco. As, there are a lot. It's not your usual neighborhood squatter that everyone knew, who was pretty chill and even helpful. Not clean, but chill and helpful.
In New York apparently, there are fewer, but they seemed to be rather violent when they were in groups, or just preferable to ignore them when they were alone.
I think there's a difference in how policing is done. If there are police officers near homeless people, the homeless tend to behave and the police usually leave them alone. If there's no police, then there's crime and committed by non-homeless people.

OP the actual answer, unlike these white terminally online teenage boys who never traveled out of their hometown, is that you visited the tourist portions of Europe where you do not see the homeless or migrant camps, while in your city you have traveled enough to see where they are.
They keep them out of the tourist spots people like you would go to for the reason. Anyone who thinks they do not exist has not traveled far within these countries.

When I am in Greece I notice that the homeless drug addicts really, really fucking stink. The last time I went in December 2024, I went to get a newspaper at a kiosk and some homeless female drug addict passed me begging for money and she smelled like a rancid rotting corpse. It was the worst smell I smelt in my life.

What are the drug addicts in Greece doing to be so pungent? They smell like a combination of a corpse and shit.

According to ai, it is from the drug sisa that they take.

No, I saw homeless camps. The euro homeless just behaved completely different. No one was screaming incoherently or trying to remove the demons from their skull with a power drill.
Anonymous No.2828937 [Report]
It's different, most of europe had their drug pandemic at one point. Letten/Platzspitz in Zurich, Bahnhof Zoo in Berlin, Amsterdam with all the associated problems (crime, dirt, prostitution for literally change etc).
They all found out that tolerating it will lead to a even bigger drug hotspots with even more problems, then they tried repression didn't work either it just moved it from point A to point B leading to a mix of close and low level zero hurdle social work, fishing up the truly mentally ill and place them in care-centers where they're taken care off instead of shitting up the streets, legalization/decriminalization of some drugs, a wide net of drug replacement hand out points, secure and clean consumption places and super simple access to rehab way beyond just detoxing.
We literally have supervised homes for addicts of all colors and ages as people accepted you can't cure a junkie unless he wants to. Give the lad his daily dose of Heroine/Alcohol/Benzos a structure and he will behave and won't shit up stuff.

I also live in Portland and had a similar observation when I went to New Zealand. Auckland felt clean and nice compared to Portland. So fucking frustrating and embarrassed with this shit. I think the rampant fentanyl use has definitely destroyed people’s minds in a novel way not seen before. The family we were visiting in NZ had never heard of fentanyl and were pretty shocked when I told them the kind of shit I see when I have to ride my bike into work downtown on a regular basis. It’s fucked because I can remember Portland in the 2000s and there was definitely some homelessness but probably 1/10th of how it feels today. I think the new drugs are definitely the common denominator in places with homeless acting like demonic psychopaths.

If you want a truly admirable example of what the homeless situation in a country should be like, look no further than Japan.

In Japan, people show respect toward one another at all times. This goes even for the homeless--they will go out of their way to be a supporting force to their local community by keeping parks and other public spaces clean and safe, and likewise, their local community supports them in the form of gifts such as clean drinking water, coffee, or food.

Japan shows us that it is indeed possible to structure society differently, but in order to achieve harmony, we must first put aside the needless strive for extreme individualism that has slowly torn apart American communities over the years.

If we treat life as an opportunity to HELP one another instead of a competition with winners and losers, we can build a better world. One, like Japan.

Seattle is marginally better because it’s kind of condensed in certain areas. Portland the shit is spread out everywhere.

Portland also has way more different classes of homeless because Seattle enforces certain laws more/differently

Portland has
>Hoboats
The homeless find abandoned boats and make makeshift floating platforms and lash them together to form a floating homeless camp on the Colombia and Willamette. Because of how river jurisdictions work, nobody can do anything about it. Seattle doesn’t have a river.

>RVagabonds
These guys somehow find barely functional RV’s/Trailers and Mad Max them out. They’ll usually park in industrial areas where parking laws aren’t really enforced.

>Wagoneers
These guys have wagons with platform built on top on which they build a shack or small lean to structure. If they get told to move they just drag it to the next street over.

I swear homeless people just don't know how to pick out good tarps and won't minimize their junk.
Homelessness doesn't have to look so disheveled, there's just no known hobo meta that's universally known...

someone needs to boost the homeless scene and get them into ranked hobo mode or something

I hung out with two different hobos in Prague, really chill people. One of them had worked in the UK for a bit as well as some other countries, he spoke a bunch of languages. He had this mouse pet called Stewart with him, he said he bought him from a pet store to make sure he had no diseases.

I met another one, I bought a liter beer at some shop and we drank it on the street, he spoke not the best english but it was ok. When I subtly asked him why he was on the street, he said he had mental problems, got this weird look on his face, I don't know if he was trying to say he was gay or pedo or what. Felt sorry for him.

These days, knowing first-hand how cheap it is to sleep in a comfortable bed in certain countries, it's tough to justify choosing a vagabond lifestyle that involves sleeping rough outdoors. So much fucking sitting and waiting around for hour after endless hour, staring into empty space, hoping for something interesting to happen but also hoping that you are left alone in peace. At least in a hotel you can be on your laptop using the WiFi to pass the time. You can shut your door and shut out the world with it.

I'm talking from a point of just falling flat on your face homeless, not picking the 'lifestyle'. Even if it 'happens' to you and not a lifestyle choice, you can still make a 'meta' choice. Your average homeless person can be homeless for years and still somehow lack experience in the homeless life that they don't improve beyond sleeping in/on a carboard box

as a casual observer, america seems to be governed by a cult for the worship of schizophrenic crackheads
I can't see why this is tolerated by any polite society
>crackhead commits violent crime
>court deems him unfit for trial
>crackhead is released in public to reoffend at will

I think america needs laws like china where if one is responsible for unleashing such a crackhead on the street, one should bear the full custody and consequences for this crackead

In usa the homeless have alot more fear so have different defense mechanisms. They carry around heaps of garbage they declare is useful so they can't be easily evicted, or perhaps even become not homeless. Sometimes to hide drugs and other paraphernalia. They act obtusely crazy, and most of it is acting, because crazy people aren't considered viable victims either by hooligans or the police. Go tell a normal person to clean his environment up, and he or she might feel shame and do so. Tell a American homeless that, and they will explode in anger and act so crazy you feel ashamed for saying anything. They (american homeless)sleep in the open because of fear of being attacked. They absolutely LOVE the police. And the police love them. Without the police American homeless coild not exist. And the police are entitled to exist at least because of the apparent homeless. They know eachither by first name basis. The homeless call the cops constantly. Almost every single American homeless you see is a narcissistic piece of shit and the world woild be better without them. The ones you dont see are probably okay. You only see the homeless that choose to look so homeless you identify them as such. Its not hard to have clean clothes okay hygiene and carry your stuff in a backpack.

T. Ive spent years among them and what I am saying is verified by experiance.

To live as a civilized homeless person you have to stay a night in a campground with shower and laundry facilities on a regular basis.

I'd say fully half of Americans are fearful neurotic creatures, due to the unpredictable aggression of their fellow mutts. It's hardly a trait confined to the homeless. People drive big trucks to feel safe more than anything.

People who are unable to conceptualize the future are like that. They carelessly spend all the money they have, then suddenly they're plunged into desperation with no options besides begging others for help. The idea of making life choices based on expected future outcomes is completely alien to them. Just like the guys who run from the cops, then act all shocked and outraged when they're being thrown to the ground and tased, then given a criminal record. The possible future outcomes of their actions never even occurred to them at any point.
