Many foreigners are turned off by how overcrowded Java is - and how primitive/rural/poorly developed the other islands are. Java's population density is higher than the shittiest, poorest, most crowded state in India (Bihar).

I've considered visiting Sumatra multiple times, but the vast distances and shitty transport infrastructure make it a serious ordeal to travel around the island starting at Belawan or Dumai ferry port. Last trip I decided to stay in peninsular Malaysia, which is pricier for a budget traveler, but far more orderly and well-developed. Very easy and cheap to get around Malaysia.

Personally I've decided to visit India before visiting Indonesia, although hotels in Sumatra start at far lower rates than they do in much of India.

To be real, Indonesia is great but the main cities are just your run of the mill super business export based cities for cheap labor. The culture is literally "the europeans made it up 2-300 years ago" and it shows to this day. Jakarta is probably the one of the few places anyone here will go to outside drunk aussies going to Bali.

No one here is realistically goning outside East Java island. With that said, you might as well go to Malaysia. The only real thing Indonesia has is that it's a cheaper version of SEA if you're willing to forgo hookers.

I was in a city in Sulawesi recently. Absolutely zero sidewalks or street lighting and lots of open sewers. I made the mistake of looking up at the night sky for just maybe 2 seconds, forgetting where I was, I fell into a sewer, slammed my chin into the concrete and ripped my pants at the knees. Indonesia is an interesting place. I love the country, the people are super nice. They're curious of foreigners and usually very friendly. If you're white, you'll still be a god there. I've never had as much success on Tinder as I did in Indonesia. Had loophole sex with a few virgins there, kinda developed a muslim fetish out of it.

Honestly, it's less developed than places like Malaysia and Thailand, plus it's dirty as fuck, but also so easy to make friends there and have a good time as a tourist.
