The author originally said the ending was going to be similar to a book called Eternal Champion in which one side completely genocides the other. He shared what he intended to the last panel in the series which was of a man with long hair (presumably Eren) cradling an infant (thought to be Ymir) with him saying "you're free." He even said that Eren doesn't have romantic feelings for Mikasa and that he kind of views her more of an overbearing mother figure. He changed all of that within the last year or two of the series.

to add to this, the final panel originally had a dark haired man holding a light haired baby, historia (a royal) was pregnant and due around the exact time eren freed ymir, this along with all the birth and baby symbolism, with how much eren and historia liked eachother and conspired together (including the idea of sacrificing historia being a leading cause for his choice to attack), AND how much it mirrors grisha's story makes it obvious how much was changed in the end.
