Class of 2023 frat guy here
You know, I always heard the “you’re paying for friends” thing and got triggered. Because it’s a cult. When you’re in the middle of 20-30 guys who all know your name and some basic things about you, most of whom you can talk to about anything and everything. All of whom you can drink with, play video games with, play sports with, study with, do anything with. You genuinely start believing these are your real friends. Frat or not. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t regret it and had some of the best times of my life in that fraternity. And I did get action a few times cause girls do want to fuck frat guys. We threw parties, played games, there was always something to do. The “you’re making connections” is mostly cope. You can make connections but if you do you look like a nerd who is taking advantage of their “friends” rather than having fun.
BUT… then you graduate. Everyone grows distant. Nobody asks you to hang out anymore. A new group chat is started every semester so you have zero communication with them anymore. If you show your face at a party or on campus suddenly you’re teased as an old person and you ought to move on. The script flips. You are excluded just as quickly as you were included. I’d imagine it’s worse for sororities cause women thrive on inflicting emotional damage.
The point is, yes it’s all fake. It’s paying for friends. But that’s okay. It’s a lesson on the world. You’re ALWAYS paying for friends one way or another. Few people you meet as an adult will be your friend without strings attatched. Sure, maybe it is cope. But that’s the way I see it.
