You and me both. The most scathing and hilarious criticism of his character I've read was when one anon mentioned that he immediately realized he was Orin's victim when he started showing character development. I just want to have Kagha tag along and either tell the group about industrial society and its future or mellow out a bit.

You know what's funny? Kogha was right all along. I started playing recently and if you are attentive then you know that the refugee tieflings are as much assholes as goblins are. In short: they were the one who razed the selunite village. In particular Zevlor and his underlings. Honestly I would just slaughter every one of them. Even their children are future thieves and criminals. Alfira is the only good one though. Bummer that Karlach won't be too happy about it.

I've heard that as part of their backstory, the Durge canonically slept with a male, so unlike Vanilla!Tav, you can't play Durge!Tav as a lesbian.

That is completely new to me. I don't remember reading something like this in any kind of context. However, Durge sleeping on a pile of bodies or next to them that I can believe. It's probably fans reading too much into it again.

While I plan for my first playthrough with Vanilla!Tav, I would like to do a Durge!Tav run in the future.

Playing as Durge for the extra content especially with Minthara is amazing. Although it may seem a bit disjointed from the regular story. I still remember the first few dialogues with Orin in Act 3 and my disappointment when nobody acknowledged the weird things she said. But I haven't played the game for a while and they added a ton of new stuff in the meantime. Maybe they included some extra dialogue that addresses that.

What I find amusing about BG3 is that you can be a completely evil scumbag who screws over/betrays everyone* they meet, but yet you can still get a happy ending with your LI**.

Whereas in Pathfinder: WOTR you have to go along certain paths to get a happy ending with Arue and especially Galfrey. Wenduag has the most narrative flexibility, although you still have to be on your toes to not have her betray you.

*Except your LI, of course. And destroying the grove makes romancing Karlach impossible.
**Karlach's "best" ending is still bittersweet, though.
Anonymous No.4362471 [Report] >>4362497

I think that's just a symptom of how lackluster the evil path is in BG3 in general. The game is largely to be played with a single, virtuous path in mind and screwing up things or deviating from that path tends to mean missing out on content. Sure, there's Minthara if you raid the grove, but she was barely functioning on release.

I wouldn't necessarily call it lackluster, especially in this day and age of so-called "RPGs". *cough*Veilguard!*cough*

I think the confusion is caused by the Durge being canonically to have been at least chummy with Enver Gortash.
I've tried looking into how deep the relationship the Durge and Gortash's relationship was and to whether it was sexual or not. But every time I try, all I can find is shipping bullshit. It's like trying to /u/ fanfics without a filter - completely buried in a sea of het and /y/.

>It's like trying to /u/ fanfics without a filter - completely buried in a sea of het and /y/.

/u/ content being the least popular category has never bothered me as much as it has in the BG3 fandom. None of the usual excuses apply: there's an excellent female cast - better written than the male cast, I'd say - and they're given very prominent roles in the story. Now what does the fandom focus on? Fucking Astarion. I dunno if I even hate the character, but I despise the fandom's single-minded obsession with the fucker. It doesn't end there either. Durgetash? 2k fics tagged with it. How many /u/ fics, including all the untagged girlpenis, futa, het, and other bullshit? 4k.
Anonymous No.4363945 [Report] >>4364625
>>4363910
Sadly, that seems to be the case with most fandoms since time immemorial.
Unfortunately, straight women/fujoshits not only have shit tastes, they also have a productive output that would have put post-war Germany and Japan's economies to shame. This, coupled in which it is all to easy to form echo chambers online, makes it all too easy for /u/ fanworks to get buried.
As convenient as it can be, it's a shame that Ao3 dominates the fanfiction sphere in a way that fanfiction.net, even at its high, ever could.. Back in the day you used to be able to find *multiple* sites that were not only dedicated to /u/ fanfiction and fanart in general, but sites that were dedicated to specific fandoms and ships..
If BG3 was released back shortly after BG2, not only would you have had at least one or two entire sites for BG3 /u/ content, but also sites for specific BG3 /u/ ships.

I guarantee you that if BG3 was released in the 2000's instead of the 2020's, there would have been a site dedicated entirely to Shadowzel alone.

What a weirdly misplaced "oldgood, new bad" take.

All those irrelevant old small specific pairing sites put together would only amount to a few hundred fics and an even smaller amount of artwork. You're not getting any less production because Ao3 exists, you are getting more production alongside the fujoshit posting. 4k fics >>4363910 is still absolutely dwarfing typical f/f pairings from <2005. For all that people have the impression that things like Kigo or Shiznat were "big", they were barely scrapping the level of modern notable minor pairings. If BG3 was released in the 2000s you'd probably have a few dozen fics and a dumb geocities page with 25 poorly drawn Shadowzel pics.

Gonna have to disagree.
Sure, there might be "more" fics on Ao3, but, like >>4363910 said,
how many of those 4k fics are Omegaverse, Futa, trans, het poly, etc?
Taking into account the increased amount of the kind of crap that has been plaguing fandoms nowadays, we're not really better off.
I'll take a few hundred fics that are mostly worth reading, than having to sift through thousands* of fics that are not worth reading.

*And how many fandoms have 1000+ f/f fics AFTER filtering out the crap? How many of those "f/f" fics on Ao3 are just Helsin and/or Astarion banging Shadowheart or whoever and Tav? There's a good reason why back in the day it had to constantly emphasised that that a guy having a threesome with two women isn't /u/.
Anonymous No.4365244 [Report] >>4365430
>>4364905
>how many of those 4k fics are Omegaverse, Futa, trans, het poly, etc?
Not enough to change the fact that there's several times more fics for any noteworthy pairing now than the extremely popular pairings then. We could go ahead and round that 4k down to 1k and it'd still be significantly ahead of what the biggest old pairings had. You could round it down to 500 and it would still make BG3, of all things, one of the biggest F/F fandoms that ever existed back in the day.
>we're not really better off.
Yes, we absolutely fucking are. There are 12,500 CaitVi fics, and over 22,000 Supercorp fics. Even "minor" pairings like Robin/Nancy from Stranger Things have like 8000 fics.
>I'll take a few hundred fics that are mostly worth reading
Except they weren't. The quality of the average fic back then was abysmal. They were really badly written, wildly out of character, often borderline unreadable 5k word garbage authored by 14 year olds, because that is who was writing the majority of fanfiction back then. Most Kigo fics aren't Alone, Together. Have you ever tried to find a decent ChellDos or StarRae fic? There are 40,000 Teen Titans fics on FF.net. When you filter for Raven/Starfire that drops to 48. The two main girls of a five person team have less than 50 fics together out of 40,000 fics.

Don't be an idiot. Why do you think we've had two BG3 threads with very active fanart posting and people only bothering to post the actually great pictures they find, but it took literal years for a Gelphie picture dump thread to hit bump ten years ago with people posting every last low quality scrap of fanart they could scrounge up? Why do you think 19 of the top 20 F/F pairings on Ao3 are from 2010+ and 11 of them are from 2015+? I'll give you a hint, it's not because we were better off for content production back in the day.

What has changed is the accessibility of the internet.

>And how many of those are, as you put, "really badly written, wildly out of character, often borderline unreadable 5k word garbage"?
Not 12,450, which is what it would need to be for it to actually be worse now. I keep quoting you literal numbers because it's the only even vaguely objective measurement here, because I figured you were smart enough to understand that "noooooo all tweleve thousand fics are bad and futa!!!" is a fucking moronic argument. Because even if only 1% of those fics are good, 125 good fics is STILL more good fics than previous fandoms had, where filtering for anything at all drops fics into the single or double digits if they aren't already in the double digits for F/F content.

>The amount of content by volume has certainly increased, sure. But the amount by quality?
The amount by quality has soared. So much so that I feel confident you've never actually engaged with the fan content any of the older F/F fandoms. Because if you had ever done so, this wouldn't even be up for debate. You would already know how fucking shitty most fanart was back then, and how little of it there was, and how bad the fics were, and how few of them there were.
Anonymous No.4365522 [Report] >>4365552

>So much so that I feel confident you've never actually engaged with the fan content any of the older F/F fandoms.
Your confidence is misplaced, then. And you're looking at the older /u/ fandom like historians looked at late antiquity and early medieval period, thinking of it as some sort of "dark age" where everything was bad a devoid of any kind of merit.

Now, to keep things BG3 related let's look at the current status of the f/f fics on Ao3.

As of now, there are 4202 F/F. Sounds good, yeah? Now, let's set some filters.
After excluding;
>F/M
>Alpha/Beta/Omega Dynamics
>Alpha/Omega
>Futanari
>Girl Penis
>Trans Character
>Nonbinary Character
>Halsin/Tav
That last tag in particular has appeared in quite a few in fics marked as "F/F".

Now after applying the filter we get - 2627 fics.
That's a 46% difference. Not an insignificant amount.
Now, to be fair, 2000+ fics is still a decent amount of content. But taking into account how much more bigger and more accessible the internet has become since the mid 2000's, we are not that much better off.

1. How much of a madlass am I being by playing Shadowheart but as a pure Barbarian?

3. Who should she romance? Lae'zel is strong contender, but she doesn't seem quite to have the same chemistry with Protagonist!Shart as she does Companion!Shart. So it's either Karlach or Minthara, although I haven't written off Lae'zel completely.

>Shadowheart but as a pure Barbarian
But why? Her entire character is built around being a cleric and if you're running her, Lae'zel, Minthara and Karlach you already have a barb and two other strong frontliners.

Her Rage shout is really cool.
I'm RPing her as being subconsciously aware of how much Shar has screwed her over and has caused her to have a lot of pent up aggression.
And Clerics are either a worse Paladin or a worse caster.

I played her as a ranger with the sanctified stalker ability. Felt somewhat fitting although having her summon wolves without issue was a bit silly.

>>4368044
Minthara all day everyday. She'll turn that debutante into a deviant in no time. Nothing wrong with clerics though, a full caster with lots of durability is nice. The spell list isn't bad either.

>pent up aggression.
That doesn't really translate to being an unarmored, super strong martial warrior trading her entire previous skill set, personality and knowledge base for swinging a big axe. I guess I just don't understand why you wouldn't just play Tav if you're going to "RP" Shadowheart as being an entirely different sort of person. It's like picking Lae'zel and rerolling her to purely support bard because "she wants freedom!"
>Clerics are either a worse Paladin or a worse caster.
BG3 Clerics are completely broken though.

Does she have any unique dialogue with Shart? I know she does with Karlach.

I don't dislike Cleric. But it lacks the "main character" energy that other classes have and I find them less fun than Sorcerer or Warlock. Perhaps I haven't given the class a fair go, but it just seems to lack the "oomph" compared to other casters. Maybe i'll do a Cleric run someday, but not any time soon.

>>4368079
>unarmored
Barbs can wear up the medium. Which is what she could as a cleric.
>personality
Changing to a Barbarian aside and subconsciously being more defiant towards Shar, i'm trying to keep to her canon personality in the early game. Well, the beginning of Act 1 to be precise. It will then gradually spiral from the Nautaloid crashsite onwards.
Anonymous No.4368095 [Report] >>4368101
>>4368089
Not that much unique dialogue iirc. I think that clerics make for decent main character if you approach it from a roleplay perspective. Choosing a deity gives a lot of easy ideas for roleplaying while not constraining you as much as a paladin oath would. If you enjoy your Tav doing a lot of damage the class might not be for you, but they do provide a lot of utility in the form of buffs and control. They can do a decent amount of damage too, but more as aoe than against singular targets.
Anonymous No.4368101 [Report]

Oh, i'm not denying the usefulness of the Cleric class. They have their place. But, like a said, they lack "main character" energy for my liking. Until I get round to get a better grasp of the class, I just see it a dip needed for the Paladin of Selune tag. They're a solid support class, but are a support class nonetheless.
I'm fine with Shadowheart being a Cleric as a companion/LI. But playing as her? That's a different story. Quite literally.
I did initially think of going Paladin, but I chose Barbarian because of the previously mentioned reasons and the fact that there's something I find hilarious about Shadowheart just getting tired of Shar's shit and deciding to just let loose and rip 'n tear everything that gets in her way.

Is it possible to RP a Durge who starts neutral/evil but becomes good because of their love for their chosen LI?
I've always been a sucker for the "evil character gets redeemed by the power of love" trope and I was really pleased with the Demon-to-Legend route with Arue in Pathfinder and I was wondering if you can do something similar with the Durge in this game.

Sure, you can. It's not like you are bound to cut off every hand and head you come across. You just get more options to do so. It's ultimately up to you if you choose those options. But one death is unavoidable as Durge in game. That one has no influence in the overall story or for your LI.

Oh, i'm aware that you don't have to choose the stabby-stabby-killy options.
What I have in mind is a Durge that doesn't start to more actively resist the Urge until she starts to come to the full realization of her feelings for Shart/Zel/Karlach/Minthara. So in Act 1 and a chunk of Act 2, with a couple of extreme exceptions, she's mostly is going to be stabby-stabby-killy.

So instead of playing a Durge who is trying to redeem themselves from the outset like a lot of people do, I want to make her redemption more of a slowburn character arc.
Anonymous No.4369742 [Report] >>4369759

You can totally play that if you want. Shart and Laz don't really care all that much if you go full murder hobo at the beginning. Karlach does care about the Tiefling camp and will leave if you kill them. And Minthara wishes you to burn it all down with her. However, Minthara will fearfully worship you because of your blood. So softness and kindness won't go well with her but you can gain her affection with words of love and praise. Just imagine her as your little devil on your shoulder urging you on to do the stabbings. It all depends how far you are willing to go and when you decide to stop. You are a thrown together group with a singular directive. "Get the worm out". They all clutter to the MC in hope for a cure. If you don't do something absolutely drastic almost all is forgiven as "she crazy but she strong, so nvm." Killing or torturing evil NPCs? Everyone will like that, except sometimes Minthara.

While my Durge's character arc might be a slowburn, I don't intend for them to go murder hobo. While they might kill a few innocents here and there, she's going to be smart about her bloodlust.
And she'll save the grove, for both meta and RP reasons. The reason being, of course, that you loose out on too much content by wiping out the grove. As for the RP reason, well, while I want her arc towards goodness to be a slow burner, I want to give it solid foundations and I think saving the grove is a pretty good one.

Ah, Minthara. While she's a popular choice for a Durge romance, I'll save her for Tav*. For the reasons you said and others, I don't think she would fit for the arc I want my Durge to go through. Heck, depending on the direction the wind is blowing, she might kill her outright for calling her a "Fairy".
I think my Durge will romance Shadowheart, as there's some interesting parallels between her and Durge. And her own redemption arc and good ending complements well with the Durge's

*How is she with a Good (LG or GG) Tav? Or at least a Neutral/Anti-hero Tav?

No worship level of adoration for TAV just judgemental looks and disapproving comments about your soft nature. With everything good that doesn't revolve around obtaining power or delivering her own form of twisted justice she will roll her eyes at you at every opportunity and disapproves about almost all of your actions. At the same time, she will still follow you around even if you are figuratively speaking an angel that can do no harm. At the end of the day she is a royal Drow Paladin with an Oath of Vengeance. Deliver justice and don't be too kind.

As a side not, if you go absolutely goody-two-shoes RP wise you are supposed to kill her and not knock her out. They only added this option much later to the story. We all did crazy stuff to get both the grove and Minthara. The collective community thirst for Minthy was too strong so we created sheep Minthara. Good times.

Neutral and/or Anti hero Tav it is, then. Which isn't a big deal for me because personally I don't think I could stomach playing a goody-two-shoes character in this game, due to pretty much everyone being different degrees of an a-hole. You could probably count the number of genuinely nice/good people in this game with one hand.
Heck, I might even up the ante and go full-evil as Tav if I feel her character is going in that direction.

Actually, that might be an interesting experience to have two simultaneous runs with a Heel-Face turn Durge and a Face-Heel turn Tav.

If I can recommend something. When you play as Durge, try to be as good as humanely possible. Resist every temptation to kill or to be led astray by evil thoughts. Be as sugary sweet as you can. Go so far that every one would blindly follow and trust you. Until the very end. You will know the moment. Have a change of heart and be true to your "own" real self. RP wise it was the best decision I could have made. It was hilarious.
Anonymous No.4372437 [Report]
>>4372416
Yeah, but then the Durge don't get her happy ending with her chosen waifu. The Durge evil ending is about killing *everything*, remember.
Personally, I see a neutral-to-good Durge as being the best ending wise and making the most sense. I mean, just because they got amnesia it doesn't mean suddenly their personality would do a 180. I wish more people would play Durge as neutral and then slowly work towards their desired alignment. Instead of being flat Good/Evil character from the beginning, in which case you might as well as play Tav instead, the Durge gets an interesting character arc. Of course, not all flat characters are bad, but everything about the Durge is set up for a character arc, full of ups, downs and drama.
There's a wholesomeness to a Durge growing past what Bhaal had set for her by finding redemption by finding love in Shart/Lae/Kar/Min*.

*Minthara might act like a devil on the Durge's shoulder, but considering how she ended up being enthralled by the cult, she's not the best at making her own decisions. That was a real Critical fail WIS skill check on her part.
