If we're talking sci-fi + yuri there is Volicia of Pluto, an independent yuri anime that flew completely under the radar. Why didn't this blow up?

Probably 'cause of how rough the animation is, plus the story being kinda hard to follow.

The animation is just a result of being independant. I would say it has soul more than a lot of commercial anime.
>story is hard to follow
How? I think there is nothing that confusing about it?

Given that the recent crowdfund ended at ~$36,500 (over 5kk yen), I would say it's actually pretty successful for what it is, although most of that success comes from being shown in indie cinemas in Japan. It's just that it's little known in the anglosphere, but that owes mostly to the fact that none of the influencers (yuri or not) ever talked about it. My feeble attempts to shill Hirasaka's works over the years also amounted to nothing.
I think once the final chapter and the movie compilation is released, it may get a little more recognition.

Although most viewers wouldn't know or care, understandably, I'm still amazed that this is the work of just one guy in his early twenties doing everything aside from voices and music (he tried doing even that once...), and he's been getting much better with every release. But it's true that his strength is mostly in worldbuilding and directing, not so much in pure drawing skill.

Some of it may be the translation, for which I personally apologize. Sometimes I hate being an ESL.
Though to be fair in ep.2 I also didn't quite get the exact time loop timeline and the exact meaning of the trials until I asked Hirasaka. Which, in hindsight, made sense and became obvious, but maybe in my mind I expected that there's more fuckery going on.

I didn't watch it subbed, so I can't say anything about the translation. As for your overthinking the plot, it's not that outlandish. It is high concept sci-fi after all.
