Also, the second episode of GCucks was maybe the most annoyed I've ever been at 30 minutes of animation. This is what happens when no one can tell the boss "No".

One of the things I like about this franchise is how generally forward-looking it is. Like okay, you need a Char clone, but you're supposed to do something new with them. Before this, Char and Amuro haven't made substantial appearances in any anime after Char's Counterattack, aside from productions that involved Yaz. Anno recycling old 0079 storyboards but replacing Amuro with Char reeks of nostalgia.

Maybe I wasn't affected because I watched the movie and knew what was going to happen in the first 3 episodes, but I absolutely agree with you. The movie started with the Char Aznable/Challia Bull fanfic before introducing Machu and her story. At least nobody is sperging about episode 3. Btw, WfM episode 15 exists... kek.

Anno’s 0079 famfic should have been a prologue ONA like they did with WfM prologue. Would allow them to release the whole thing that was in the movie rather than having to cut shit to fit TV time limits
Would also mean once the show starts, the story isn’t interrupted by episode 2 being a flashback

One of the first three episodes being entirely devoted to Gundam 78 The Legend of Char's Gold is a tactical choice. Yes it could've been a prequel episode outside of the traditional story order, but it wasn't.

I don't have issues with the OYW episode, I only think Gcucks should've started with it (like the movie), or at least introduced it as a some sort of flashback.

Machu doesn't know who Char was, so I guess that's that for any theories of her being Haman.

You can't really do a tv show about the adventures of a girl named Machu and dedicate your first episode to the adventures of a beloved legacy character.

That's the main problem with ep 2. It isn't necessary and it doesn't fit anywhere within the structure of the series. It's pure self-indulgence. This is exactly the kind of darling a writer is supposed to kill.

I think the Char clones generally work pretty well. Most of Tomino's are basically joke characters (I smile a little every time I remember F91's Iron Cuck). 00's Graham was funny but kind of inessential, AGE's Zeheart maybe more conventional but also one of the few parts of that show that worked.

IBO's McGillis was a really good reworking of Char and his relationship with Garma, as you'd expect from the Fujo Gundam. Prospera's just great, and pretty far from the archetype. Notably the last two weren't even rivals to the hero.

I think Zechs from Wing is the only outright terrible Char clone. He tries to hit all the hits of the original's character arc, only in ~50 episodes and maybe a year's time in-universe, which ends up silly.

I think my main issue with Char clones as a concept is they're usually established early on and it's very easy to tell what role they'll be playing because of it. It takes away some narrative ambiguity when you can tell at a glance ah so this character is gonna be the rival ace type. Not that Gundam has especially ambiguous characterization, but I value characters like Cina who have their ups and downs across the narrative and have obviously been through the wringer way more than the unflappable, charismatic ace of nearly unparalleled skill pidgeonhole.

And then there's like Full Frontal who kind of literally only exists to evoke Char in the lamest ways possible. CCA ending like it did was nearly perfect Tomino, we don't need a literal clone situation to drum up hype. I don't think Tomino even worked on Unicorn but I'm still blaming him. I do agree the recent trend of having them be unexpected/reluctant allies to the protagonists has been neat though.
