That's not quite what happened. By "shoehorning things that yuri fans don't like" you probably mean the dude from Siren, but it's important to remember that Siren was conceived at the same time as the rest of the franchise. It was released later, but all parts of VD started development at the same time as a multimedia franchise.
They certainly did not have a clear audience in mind, that's why Mermaid, Bhikkuni, and Siren each one aim for a slightly different audience, it just happened that Mermaid became the most popular and happened to be the gayest.
The franchise's failure also had nothing to do with Siren, it simply failed to meet the expected numbers to keep it going. They even corrected their mistake by removing the guy from the Siren manga.
