What did you think of Mario Galaxy 2? Better or worse than 1?
Also, is it beatable with the classic controller patch?

I hated both Galaxy 1 and 2 because of how linear they were compared to such hits as Mario 64 and Sunshine.

I've started it, I think 1 had a more impressive start. Though it also felt way more simple and tutorial-ish. 2's levels feel a tad weird so far. But it's still good, gonna keep playing it. Hope it picks up a bit

Best way to play these games in 2025?
Dolphin with a Wii controller? Or something else?

Can you use mouse and keyboard for pointer?

it's better but mario galaxy 1 benefited from the mere exposure effect

I'm OP. There's a classic controller patch, you can check it on YouTube. It switches the wiimote pointer control to right analog, otherwise it controls like 64 and other 3D games. It works fine for everything but 2-3 stars in Galaxy 1. I just got 120 stars in it.
The problem is, Galaxy 2 uses wiimote way more. Basically Yoshi uses it kind of like grappling hook. So I'm not sure it'll work that well for more intense Yoshi missions.

SMG1 has a better intro, story(lol) and better navigator(Rosalina) but I feel like with SMG2 they got the kinks out and made the gameplay much more solid and engaging without the overuse of gimmicks. Even Yoshi, the biggest gimmick, isn't overused and never overstays his welcome. Both games are absolutely fun to play so either way you're in for a good time.

>strike absolute gold with Rosalina
>ditch her in the sequel
Why?

Exponentially worse and it's all down to the intro
Feels like being conscripted into the janitor army rather than just having fun adventures

In terms of pure gameplay, Galaxy 2 is probably the better game. But Galaxy 1 is better in almost every other category. The observatory is a more memorable hub area that feels more fun to explore. The Starship feels like it is just a resting area where you stop before picking between going from point A to B. Galaxy 1 felt like it was trying something different with Mario, taking him out of his element, and putting him in a grand space adventure. 2 doesn't even feel like it takes place in space anymore. It's like every other bright and colorful Mario game. Galaxy 1 had you traveling outside of spaceships and was always accompanying with that dark, starry sky box.
I think it's the same thing with how DMC1 fans prefer over the others because of its aesthetic. I prefer every other 3D Mario in terms of gameplay over Galaxy, so that makes picking 1 a little easier.
Also, as a kid, I never liked the Cloud suit. I didn't like how it made Mario floaty and I felt like the game overused it compared to other power-ups.

So Galaxy 2 is the better game in all that matters.

Not really. Video games can be enhanced by aspects such as story, music, and art direction.
Galaxy 1's suite of levels are different enough from 2 that one may prefer simply that aspect alone. If you aren't a fan of certain powers-up like rock or cloud, and preferred 1's selection, that gameplay experience can be seen as better.
