It nails the small town atmosphere. The writing is quite "anime" but tolerable outside the inevitable cringe moment hre and there. The high school part is just background for the main cast. I played for the first time on steam release in 2020 when I was 26 and it really just reminded me how boring school life was, but it isn't realistic by any means. The ventriloquist teacher was based.

The gameplay is good, so yeah. A good entry point to MegaTen in general despite what purists would say. Though, Metaphor Refantazio is basically Persona but fantasy setting and no high school shit with extremely similar gameplay, would recommend that a lot more. I also think 4 is the weakest Persona game but that's a whole other topic.

I have friends irl and I still enjoyed this game. To me the appeal is the characters rather the high school part. The game could take place out of high school and I’d still enjoy the characters. If the characters don’t like the characters then you’re going to have a bad time because you spend 99% percent of the time with them
