Would it be better to play a game series by release order to gain a better appreciation for each title and/or be able to spot all possible references and eastereggs while critiquing what they did right and wrong for each game?

it would be better to play migu game
It works better for music since you can easily trace how a band evolves with every new album. Although in Migu's case I actually do recommend starting with the PSP games to understand how soul can subtly be removed over time.
